This paper jointly investigates user association (UA), mode selection (MS), and bandwidth allocation (BA) problems in a novel and practical next-generation cellular network where two modes of semantic communication (SemCom) and conventional bit communication (BitCom) coexist, namely hybrid semantic/bit communication network (HSB-Net). Concretely, we first identify a unified performance metric of message throughput for both SemCom and BitCom links. Next, we comprehensively develop a knowledge matching-aware two-stage tandem packet queuing model and theoretically derive the average packet loss ratio and queuing latency. Combined with several practical constraints, we then formulate a joint optimization problem for UA, MS, and BA to maximize the overall message throughput of HSB-Net. Afterward, we propose an optimal resource management strategy by employing a Lagrange primal-dual method and devising a preference list-based heuristic algorithm. Indoor visible light communication (VLC) is considered secure against attackers outside the confined area where the light propagates, but it is still susceptible to interception from inside the coverage area. A new technology, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS), has been recently introduced, offering a way to enhance physical layer security (PLS). Most research on IRS-assisted VLC assumes the same time of arrival from all reflecting elements and overlooks the effect of time delay and the associated intersymbol interference. This paper tackles, for the first time, the effect of time delay on the secrecy rate in VLC systems. Our results show that, at a fixed light-emitting diode (LED) power of 3W, the secrecy rate can be enhanced by up to 253\% at random positions for the legitimate user when the eavesdropper is located within a 1-meter radius of the LED. Our results also show that careful allocation of the IRS elements can lead to enhanced PLS even when the eavesdropper has a more favourable position and, thus, a better channel gain than the legitimate user.

The pervasive nature of wireless telecommunication has made it the foundation for mainstream technologies like automation, smart vehicles, virtual reality, and unmanned aerial vehicles. As these technologies experience widespread adoption in our daily lives, ensuring the reliable performance of cellular networks in mobile scenarios has become a paramount challenge. Beamforming, an integral component of modern mobile networks, enables spatial selectivity and improves network quality. However, many beamforming techniques are iterative, introducing unwanted latency to the system. In recent times, there has been a growing interest in leveraging mobile users' location information to expedite beamforming processes. This paper explores the concept of contextual beamforming, discussing its advantages, disadvantages and implications. Notably, the study presents an impressive 53% improvement in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by implementing the adaptive beamforming (MRT) algorithm compared to scenarios without beamforming. It further elucidates how MRT contributes to contextual beamforming. The importance of localization in implementing contextual beamforming is also examined. Additionally, the paper delves into the use of artificial intelligence schemes, including machine learning and deep learning, in implementing contextual beamforming techniques that leverage user location information. Based on the comprehensive review, the results suggest that the combination of MRT and Zero forcing (ZF) techniques, alongside deep neural networks (DNN) employing Bayesian Optimization (BO), represents the most promising approach for contextual beamforming. Furthermore, the study discusses the future potential of programmable switches, such as Tofino, in enabling location-aware beamforming.

Semantic communication (SemCom) has recently been considered a promising solution to guarantee high resource utilization and transmission reliability for future wireless networks. Nevertheless, the unique demand for background knowledge matching makes it challenging to achieve efficient wireless resource management for multiple users in SemCom-enabled networks (SC-Nets). To this end, this paper investigates SemCom from a networking perspective, where two fundamental problems of user association (UA) and bandwidth allocation (BA) are systematically addressed in the SC-Net. First, considering varying knowledge matching states between mobile users and associated base stations, we identify two general SC-Net scenarios, namely perfect knowledge matching-based SC-Net and imperfect knowledge matching-based SC-Net. Afterward, for each SC-Net scenario, we describe its distinctive semantic channel model from the semantic information theory perspective, whereby a concept of bit-rate-to-message-rate transformation is developed along with a new semantics-level metric, namely system throughput in message (STM), to measure the overall network performance. In this way, we then formulate a joint STM-maximization problem of UA and BA for each SC-Net scenario, followed by a corresponding optimal solution proposed. The rise of intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) is opening the door for unprecedented capabilities in visible light communication (VLC) systems. By controlling light propagation in indoor environments, it is possible to manipulate the channel conditions to achieve specific key performance indicators. In this paper, we investigate the role that IRSs can play in boosting the secrecy capacity of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) VLC systems. More specifically, we propose an IRS-based physical layer security (PLS) mechanism that mitigates the information leakage risk inherent in NOMA. Our results demonstrate that the achieved secrecy capacity can be enhanced by up to 105% for a number of 80 IRS elements. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that examines the PLS of NOMA-based IRS-assisted VLC systems.

In this paper, we model, analyze and optimize the multi-user and multi-order-reflection (MUMOR) intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) networks. We first derive a complete MUMOR IRS network model applicable for the arbitrary times of reflections, size and number of IRSs/reflectors. The optimal condition for achieving sum-rate upper bound with one IRS in a closed-form function and the analytical condition to achieve interference-free transmission are derived, respectively. Leveraging this optimal condition, we obtain the MUMOR sum-rate upper bound of the IRS network with different network topologies, where the linear graph (LG), complete graph (CG) and null graph (NG) topologies are considered. Simulation results verify our theories and derivations and demonstrate that the sum-rate upper bounds of different network topologies are under a K-fold improvement given K-piece IRS.

In this letter, we investigate the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communications, under the assumption of generalized Gaussian noise (GGN), over Rayleigh fading channels. Specifically, we consider an RIS, equipped with $N$ reflecting elements, and derive a novel closed-form expression for the symbol error rate (SER) of arbitrary modulation schemes. The usefulness of the derived new expression is that it can be used to capture the SER performance in the presence of special additive noise distributions such as Gamma, Laplacian, and Gaussian noise. These special cases are also considered and their associated asymptotic SER expressions are derived, and then employed to quantify the achievable diversity order of the system. The theoretical framework is corroborated by numerical results, which reveal that the shaping parameter of the GGN ($\alpha$) has a negligible effect on the diversity order of RIS-assisted systems, particularly for large $\alpha$ values. Accordingly, the maximum achievable diversity order is determined by $N$.

Light fidelity (LiFi), which is based on visible light communications (VLC), is celebrated as a cutting-edge technological paradigm that is envisioned to be an indispensable part of 6G systems. Nonetheless, LiFi performance is subject to efficiently overcoming the line-of-sight blockage, whose adverse effect on wireless reception reliability becomes even more pronounced in highly dynamic environments, such as vehicular application scenarios. Meanwhile, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) emerged recently as a revolutionary concept that transfers the physical propagation environment into a fully controllable and customisable space in a low-cost low-power fashion. We anticipate that the integration of RIS in LiFi-enabled networks will not only support blockage mitigation but will also provision complex interactions among network entities, and is hence manifested as a promising platform that enables a plethora of technological trends and new applications. In this article, for the first time in the open literature, we set the scene for a holistic overview of RIS-assisted LiFi systems. Specifically, we explore the underlying RIS architecture from the perspective of physics and present a forward-looking vision that outlines potential operational elements supported by RIS-enabled transceivers and RIS-enabled environments. Finally, we highlight major associated challenges and offer a look ahead toward promising future directions.

In this paper, we develop an analytical framework for the statistical analysis of the battery recharging time (BRT) in reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) aided wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. Specifically, we derive novel closed-form expressions for the probability density function (PDF), cumulative distribution function, and moments of the BRT of the radio frequency energy harvesting wireless nodes. Moreover, closed-form expressions of the the PDF of the BRT is obtained for two special cases: i) when the RIS is equipped with one reflecting element (RE), ii) when the RIS consists of a large number of REs. Capitalizing on the derived expressions, we offer a comprehensive treatment for the statistical characterization of the BRT and study the impact of the system and battery parameters on its performance. Our results reveal that the proposed statistical models are analytically tractable, accurate, and efficient in assessing the sustainability of RIS-assisted WPT networks and in providing key design insights for large-scale future wireless applications. For example, we demonstrate that a 4-fold reduction in the mean time of the BRT can be achieved by doubling the number of RIS elements. Monte Carlo simulation results corroborate the accuracy of the proposed theoretical framework.

Recent advances in programmable metasurfaces, also dubbed as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), are envisioned to offer a paradigm shift from uncontrollable to fully tunable and customizable wireless propagation environments, enabling a plethora of new applications and technological trends. Therefore, in view of this cutting edge technological concept, we first review the architecture and electromagnetic waves manipulation functionalities of RISs. We then detail some of the recent advancements that have been made towards realizing these programmable functionalities in wireless communication applications. Furthermore, we elaborate on how machine learning (ML) can address various constraints introduced by the real-time deployment of RISs, particularly in terms of latency, storage, energy efficiency, and computation. A review of the state-of-the-art research on the integration of ML with RISs is presented, highlighting their potentials as well as challenges. Finally, the paper concludes by offering a look ahead towards unexplored possibilities of ML mechanisms in the context of RISs.

Multicarrier-low density spreading multiple access (MC-LDSMA) is a promising multiple access technique that enables near optimum multiuser detection. In MC-LDSMA, each user's symbol spread on a small set of subcarriers, and each subcarrier is shared by multiple users. The unique structure of MC-LDSMA makes the radio resource allocation more challenging comparing to some well-known multiple access techniques. In this paper, we study the radio resource allocation for single-cell MC-LDSMA system. Firstly, we consider the single-user case, and derive the optimal power allocation and subcarriers partitioning schemes. Then, by capitalizing on the optimal power allocation of the Gaussian multiple access channel, we provide an optimal solution for MC-LDSMA that maximizes the users' weighted sum-rate under relaxed constraints. Due to the prohibitive complexity of the optimal solution, suboptimal algorithms are proposed based on the guidelines inferred by the optimal solution. The performance of the proposed algorithms and the effect of subcarrier loading and spreading are evaluated through Monte Carlo simulations. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithms significantly outperform conventional static resource allocation, and MC-LDSMA can improve the system performance in terms of spectral efficiency and fairness in comparison with OFDMA.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) as well as other orthogonal multiple access techniques fail to achieve the system capacity limit in the uplink due to the exclusivity in resource allocation. This issue is more prominent when fairness among the users is considered in the system. Current Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) techniques introduce redundancy by coding/spreading to facilitate the users' signals separation at the receiver, which degrade the system spectral efficiency. Hence, in order to achieve higher capacity, more efficient NOMA schemes need to be developed. In this paper, we propose a NOMA scheme for uplink that removes the resource allocation exclusivity and allows more than one user to share the same subcarrier without any coding/spreading redundancy. Joint processing is implemented at the receiver to detect the users' signals. However, to control the receiver complexity, an upper limit on the number of users per subcarrier needs to be imposed. In addition, a novel subcarrier and power allocation algorithm is proposed for the new NOMA scheme that maximizes the users' sum-rate. The link-level performance evaluation has shown that the proposed scheme achieves bit error rate close to the single-user case. The proliferation of mobile Internet and connected devices, offering a variety of services at different levels of performance, represents a major challenge for the fifth generation wireless networks and beyond. This requires a paradigm shift towards the development of key enabling techniques for the next generation wireless networks. In this respect, visible light communication (VLC) has recently emerged as a new communication paradigm that is capable of providing ubiquitous connectivity by complementing radio frequency communications. One of the main challenges of VLC systems, however, is the low modulation bandwidth of the light-emitting-diodes, which is in the megahertz range. This article presents a promising technology, referred to as "optical- non-orthogonal multiple access (O-NOMA)", which is envisioned to address the key challenges in the next generation of wireless networks. We provide a detailed overview and analysis of the state-of-the-art integration of O-NOMA in VLC networks. Furthermore, we provide insights on the potential opportunities and challenges as well as some open research problems that are envisioned to pave the way for the future design and implementation of O-NOMA in VLC systems.

The homogeneous Poisson point process (PPP) is widely used to model spatial distribution of base stations and mobile terminals. The same process can be used to model underlay device-to-device (D2D) network, however, neglecting homophilic relation for D2D pairing presents underestimated system insights. In this paper, we model both spatial and social distributions of interfering D2D nodes as proximity based independently marked homogeneous Poisson point process. The proximity considers physical distance between D2D nodes whereas social relationship is modeled as Zipf based marks. We apply these two paradigms to analyze the effect of interference on coverage probability of distance-proportional power-controlled cellular user. Effectively, we apply two type of functional mappings (physical distance, social marks) to Laplace functional of PPP. The resulting coverage probability has no closed-form expression, however for a subset of social marks, the mark summation converges to digamma and polygamma functions. This subset constitutes the upper and lower bounds on coverage probability. We present numerical evaluation of these bounds on coverage probability by varying number of different parameters. The results show that by imparting simple power control on cellular user, ultra-dense underlay D2D network can be realized without compromising the coverage probability of cellular user., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

Universal filtered multi-carrier (UFMC) systems offer a flexibility of filtering arbitrary number of subcarriers to suppress out of band (OoB) emission, while keeping the orthogonality between subbands and subcarriers within one subband. However, subband filtering may affect system performance and capacity in a number of ways. In this paper, we first propose the conditions for interference-free one-tap equalization and corresponding signal model in the frequency domain for multi-user (MU) UFMC system. Based on this ideal interference-free case, impact of subband filtering on the system performance is analyzed in terms of average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) per subband, capacity per subcarrier and bit error rate (BER) and compared with the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. This is followed by filter length selection strategies to provide guidelines for system design. Next, by taking carrier frequency offset (CFO), timing offset (TO), insufficient guard interval between symbols and filter tail cutting (TC) into consideration, an analytical system model is established. New channel equalization algorithms are proposed by considering the errors and imperfections based on the derived signal models. In addition, a set of optimization criteria in terms of filter length and guard interval/filter TC length subject to various constraints is formulated to maximize the system capacity. The homogeneous poisson point process (PPP) is widely used to model temporal, spatial or both topologies of base stations (BSs) and mobile terminals (MTs). However, negative spatial correlation in BSs, due to strategical deployments, and positive spatial correlations in MTs, due to homophilic relations, cannot be captured by homogeneous spatial PPP (SPPP). In this paper, we assume doubly stochastic poisson process, a generalization of homogeneous PPP, with intensity measure as another stochastic process. To this end, we assume Permanental Cox Process (PCP) to capture positive spatial correlation in MTs. We consider product density to derive closed-form approximation (CFA) of spatial summary statistics. We propose Euler Characteristic (EC) based novel approach to approximate intractable random intensity measure and subsequently derive nearest neighbor distribution function. We further propose the threshold and spatial extent of excursion set of chi-square random field as interference control parameters to select different cluster sizes for device-to-device (D2D) communication. The spatial extent of clusters is controlled by nearest neighbor distribution function which is incorporated into Laplace functional of SPPP to analyze the effect of D2D interfering clusters on average coverage probability of cellular user. Device-to-device (D2D) communication has huge potential for capacity and coverage enhancements for next generation cellular networks. The number of potential nodes for D2D communication is an important parameter that directly impacts the system capacity. In this paper, we derive analytic expression for average coverage probability of cellular user and corresponding number of potential D2D users. In this context, mature framework of stochastic geometry and Poisson point process has been used. The retention probability has been incorporated in Laplace functional to capture reduced path-loss and shortest distance criterion based D2D pairing. Nowadays, providing higher data rate is a momentous goal for wireless communications systems. Interference is one of the important obstacles to reach this purpose. Interference alignment is a management technique that align interference from other transmitters in the least possible dimension subspace at each receiver and as a result, provide the remaining dimensions for free interference signal. An uncoordinated interference is an example of interference which cannot be aligned coordinately with interference from coordinated part and consequently, the performance of interference alignment approaches is degraded. In this paper, we propose two rank minimization methods to enhance the performance of interference alignment in the presence of uncoordinated interference sources. Firstly, a new objective function is chosen then, a new class of convex relaxation is proposed with respect to the uncoordinated interference which leads to decrease the optimal value of our optimization problem. Moreover, we use schatten-p-norm as surrogate of rank function and we implement iteratively reweighted algorithm to solve optimization problem. In addition, we apply our proposed methods to mitigate interference in relay-aided MIMO interference channel, and propose a weighted-sum method to improve the performance of interference alignment in the amplify-and-forward relay-aided MIMO system based on the rank minimization approach. Finally, our simulation results show that our proposed methods can obtain considerably higher multiplexing gain and sum rate than other approaches in the interference alignment framework and the performance of interference alignment is improved.

Ultra-dense network (UDN) has been considered as a promising candidate for future 5G network to meet the explosive data demand. To realize UDN, a reliable, Gigahertz bandwidth, and cost-effective backhaul connecting ultra-dense small-cell base stations (BSs) and macro-cell BS is prerequisite. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) can provide the potential Gbps traffic for wireless backhaul. Moreover, mmWave can be easily integrated with massive MIMO for the improved link reliability. In this article, we discuss the feasibility of mmWave massive MIMO based wireless backhaul for 5G UDN, and the benefits and challenges are also addressed. Especially, we propose a digitally-controlled phase-shifter network (DPSN) based hybrid precoding/combining scheme for mmWave massive MIMO, whereby the low-rank property of mmWave massive MIMO channel matrix is leveraged to reduce the required cost and complexity of transceiver with a negligible performance loss. One key feature of the proposed scheme is that the macro-cell BS can simultaneously support multiple small-cell BSs with multiple streams for each smallcell BS, which is essentially different from conventional hybrid precoding/combining schemes typically limited to single-user MIMO with multiple streams or multi-user MIMO with single stream for each user. Based on the proposed scheme, we further explore the fundamental issues of developing mmWave massive MIMO for wireless backhaul, and the associated challenges, insight, and prospect to enable the mmWave massive MIMO based wireless backhaul for 5G UDN are discussed., Comment: This paper has been accepted by IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine.
