We consider a wireless network where a source generates packets and forwards them to a network containing $n$ nodes. The nodes in the network use the asynchronous push, pull or push-pull gossip communication protocols to maintain the most recent updates from the source. We use the version age of information metric to quantify the freshness of information in the network. Prior to this work, only the push gossiping protocol has been studied for age of information analysis. In this paper, we use the stochastic hybrid systems (SHS) framework to obtain recursive equations for the expected version age of sets of nodes in the time limit. We then show that the pull and push-pull protocols can achieve constant version age, while it is already known that the push protocol can only achieve logarithmic version age. We then show that the push-pull protocol performs better than the push and the pull protocol. Finally, we carry out numerical simulations to evaluate these results.

We consider the version age of information (AoI) in a network where a subset of nodes act as sensing nodes, sampling a source that in general can follow a continuous distribution. Any sample of the source constitutes a new version of the information and the version age of the information is defined with respect to the most recent version of the information available for the whole network. We derive a recursive expression for the average version AoI between different subsets of the nodes which can be used to evaluate the average version AoI for any subset of the nodes including any single node. We derive asymptotic behavior of the average AoI on any single node of the network for various topologies including line, ring, and fully connected networks. The prior art result on version age of a network by Yates [ISIT'21] can be interpreted as in our derivation as a network with a single view of the source, e.g., through a Poisson process with rate $\lambda_{00}$. Our result indicates that there is no loss in the average version AoI performance by replacing a single view of the source with distributed sensing across multiple nodes by splitting the same rate $\lambda_{00}$. Particularly, we show that asymptotically, the average AoI scales with $O(\log(n))$ and $O(\sqrt{n})$ for fully connected and ring networks, respectively. More interestingly, we show that for the ring network the same $O(\sqrt{n})$ asymptotical performance on average AoI is still achieved with distributed sensing if the number of sensing nodes only scales with $O(\sqrt{n})$ instead of prior known result which requires $O(n)$. Our results indicate that the sensing nodes can be arbitrarily chosen as long as the maximum number of consecutive non-sensing nodes also scales as $O(\sqrt{n})$.

Most existing stochastic models on age of information (AoI) focus on a single shared server serving status update packets from $N>1$ sources where each packet update stream is Poisson, i.e., single-hop scenario. In the current work, we study a two-hop edge computing system for which status updates from the information sources are still Poisson but they are not immediately available at the shared edge server, but instead they need to first receive service from a transmission server dedicated to each source. For exponentially distributed and heterogeneous service times for both the dedicated servers and the edge server, and bufferless preemptive resource management, we develop an analytical model using absorbing Markov chains (AMC) for obtaining the distribution of AoI for any source in the system. Moreover, for a given tagged source, the traffic arriving at the shared server from the $N-1$ un-tagged sources, namely the interference traffic, is not Poisson any more, but is instead a Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) whose state space grows exponentially with $N$. Therefore, we propose to employ a model reduction technique that approximates the behavior of the MMPP interference traffic with two states only, making it possible to approximately obtain the AoI statistics even for a very large number of sources. What will the future of cislunar communications be? The ever-expanding horizons of the space exploration missions, and the need for establishing sustainable space communication and navigation infrastructure necessitate to think this question thoroughly. In this article, we examine how some of the concepts of 6G technologies developed for terrestrial networks can be relevant in the context of cislunar networks. We discuss how 6G concepts, such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, quantum-resistant physical layer security, private information read/write/cache networks, semantic and goal-oriented communications, information freshness based quality of communication metrics, multi-relay and cooperative networks, hold the potential to shape the future of cislunar communications.

We study push-based sampling and transmission policies for a status update system consisting of a general finite-state continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) information source with known dynamics, with the goal of minimizing the average age of incorrect information (AoII). The problem setting we investigate involves an exponentially distributed delay channel for transmissions and a constraint on the average sampling rate. We first show that the optimum sampling and transmission policy is a 'multi-threshold policy', where the thresholds depend on both the estimation value and the state of the original process, and sampling and transmission need to be initiated when the instantaneous AoII exceeds the corresponding threshold, called the estimation- and state-aware transmission (ESAT) policy. Subsequently, we formulate the problem of finding the thresholds as a constrained semi-Markov decision process (CSMDP) and the Lagrangian approach. Additionally, we propose two lower complexity sub-optimum policies, namely the estimation-aware transmission (EAT) policy, and the single-threshold (ST) policy, for which it is possible to obtain these thresholds for CTMCs with relatively larger number of states. The underlying CSMDP formulation relies on the 'multi-regime phase-type' (MRPH) distribution which is a generalization of the well-known phase-type distribution, which allows us to obtain the distribution of time until absorption in a CTMC whose transition rates change with respect to time in a piece-wise manner. The effectiveness of the proposed ESAT, EAT and ST sampling and transmission policies are shown through numerical examples, along with comparisons with a baseline scheme that transmits packets according to a Poisson process in out-of-sync periods.

In multi-source status update systems, sources need to be scheduled appropriately to maintain timely communication between each of the sources and the monitor. A cyclic schedule is an age-agnostic schedule in which the sources are served according to a fixed finite transmission pattern, which upon completion, repeats itself. Such a scheme has a low $O(1)$ runtime complexity, which is desirable in large networks. This paper's focus is on designing transmission patterns so as to be used in massive scale networking scenarios involving a very large number of sources, e.g., up to thousands of IoT sources, with service time requirements and weights being heterogeneous in nature. The goal is to minimize the weighted sum age of information (AoI), called weighted AoI, when transmitting users' packets over a channel susceptible to heterogeneous packet errors. The main tool we use is a stochastic modeling framework using either Markov chains (MC) or moment generating functions (MGF), by which we obtain the weighted AoI for a given transmission pattern, which is not straightforward in the presence of packet drops. Using this framework, we provide a lower bound on the weighted AoI for the particular case of two sources, and also an algorithm to attain this lower bound. Then, by using the same framework, we design a cyclic scheduler for general number of sources with reasonable complexity using convex optimization and well-established packet spreading algorithms, and comparatively evaluate the proposed algorithm and existing age-agnostic scheduling schemes for general number of sources (resp.~two sources) when the lower bound is not available (resp.~when it is available). We present extensive numerical results to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

We consider a gossip network consisting of a source generating updates and $n$ nodes connected according to a given graph structure. The source keeps updates of a process, that might be generated or observed, and shares them with the gossiping network. The nodes in the network communicate with their neighbors and disseminate these version updates using a push-style gossip strategy. We use the version age metric to quantify the timeliness of information at the nodes. We first find an upper bound for the average version age for a set of nodes in a general network. Using this, we find the average version age scaling of a node in several network graph structures, such as two-dimensional grids, generalized rings and hyper-cubes. Prior to our work, it was known that when $n$ nodes are connected on a ring the version age scales as $O(n^{\frac{1}{2}})$, and when they are connected on a fully-connected graph the version age scales as $O(\log n)$. Ours is the first work to show an age scaling result for a connectivity structure other than the ring and the fully-connected network, which constitute the two extremes of network connectivity. We consider a communication system where a group of users, interconnected in a bidirectional gossip network, wishes to follow a time-varying source, e.g., updates on an event, in real-time. The users wish to maintain their expected version ages below a threshold, and can either rely on gossip from their neighbors or directly subscribe to a server publishing about the event, if the former option does not meet the timeliness requirements. The server wishes to maximize its profit by increasing subscriptions from users and minimizing event sampling frequency to reduce costs. This leads to a Stackelberg game between the server and the users where the sender is the leader deciding its sampling frequency and the users are the followers deciding their subscription strategies. We investigate equilibrium strategies for low-connectivity and high-connectivity topologies.

We consider an asynchronous decentralized learning system, which consists of a network of connected devices trying to learn a machine learning model without any centralized parameter server. The users in the network have their own local training data, which is used for learning across all the nodes in the network. The learning method consists of two processes, evolving simultaneously without any necessary synchronization. The first process is the model update, where the users update their local model via a fixed number of stochastic gradient descent steps. The second process is model mixing, where the users communicate with each other via randomized gossiping to exchange their models and average them to reach consensus. In this work, we investigate the staleness criteria for such a system, which is a sufficient condition for convergence of individual user models. We show that for network scaling, i.e., when the number of user devices $n$ is very large, if the gossip capacity of individual users scales as $\Omega(\log n)$, we can guarantee the convergence of user models in finite time. Furthermore, we show that the bounded staleness can only be guaranteed by any distributed opportunistic scheme by $\Omega(n)$ scaling.

We consider a communication system consisting of a server that tracks and publishes updates about a time-varying data source or event, and a gossip network of users interested in closely tracking the event. The timeliness of the information is measured through the version age of information. The users wish to have their expected version ages remain below a threshold, and have the option to either rely on gossip from their neighbors or subscribe to the server directly to follow updates about the event if the former option does not meet the timeliness requirements. The server wishes to maximize its profit by increasing the number of subscribers and reducing costs associated with the frequent sampling of the event. We model the problem setup as a Stackelberg game between the server and the users, where the server commits to a frequency of sampling the event, and the users make decisions on whether to subscribe or not. As an initial work, we focus on directed networks with unidirectional flow of information and obtain the optimal equilibrium strategies for all the players. We provide simulation results to confirm the theoretical findings and provide additional insights.

We consider the problem of task offloading in multi-access edge computing (MEC) systems constituting $N$ devices assisted by an edge server (ES), where the devices can split task execution between a local processor and the ES. Since the local task execution and communication with the ES both consume power, each device must judiciously choose between the two. We model the problem as a large population non-cooperative game among the $N$ devices. Since computation of an equilibrium in this scenario is difficult due to the presence of a large number of devices, we employ the mean-field game framework to reduce the finite-agent game problem to a generic user's multi-objective optimization problem, with a coupled consistency condition. By leveraging the novel age of information (AoI) metric, we invoke techniques from stochastic hybrid systems (SHS) theory and study the tradeoffs between increasing information freshness and reducing power consumption. We study age of information (AoI) in a single-source dual-server status update system for the generate at will (GAW) scenario, consisting of an information source, dual servers, and a monitor. For this system, the method of stochastic hybrid systems (SHS) was used to obtain the mean AoI for the work-conserving ZW (zero wait) policy with out-of-order packet discarding at the monitor. In this paper, we propose a non-work-conserving F/P (freeze/preempt) policy for which the sampling and transmission process is frozen for an Erlang distributed amount of time upon each transmission, and out-of-order packets are preempted immediately at the source, rather than being discarded at the monitor upon reception. We use the absorbing Markov chain (AMC) method to obtain the exact distributions of AoI and also the peak AoI (PAoI) processes, for both ZW and F/P policies. We consider a time-slotted status update system with an error-free preemptive queue. The goal of the sampler-scheduler pair is to minimize the age of information at the monitor by sampling and transmitting the freshly sampled update packets to the monitor. The sampler-scheduler pair also has a choice to preempt an old update packet from the server and transmit a new update packet to the server. We formulate this problem as a Markov decision process (MDP) and find the optimal sampling policy. We find a sufficient, and also separately a necessary, condition for the always preemption policy to be an optimal policy. We show that it is optimal for the sampler-scheduler pair to sample a new packet immediately upon the reception of an update packet at the monitor. We propose a double-threshold sampling policy which we show to be an optimal policy under some assumptions on the queue statistic.

We consider the problems arising from the presence of Byzantine servers in a quantum private information retrieval (QPIR) setting. This is the first work to precisely define what the capabilities of Byzantine servers could be in a QPIR context. We show that quantum Byzantine servers have more capabilities than their classical counterparts due to the possibilities created by quantum encoding procedures. We focus on quantum Byzantine servers that can apply any reversible operation on their individual qudits. In this case, Byzantine servers can generate any error, i.e., this covers \emph{all} possible single qudit operations that can be applied by Byzantine servers on their qudits. We design a scheme based on cross-subspace alignment (CSA) and we show that this scheme achieves superdense coding gain in some cases.

We consider the problem of private set membership aggregation of $N$ parties by using an entangled quantum state. In this setting, the $N$ parties, which share an entangled state, aim to \emph{privately} know the number of times each element (message) is repeated among the $N$ parties, with respect to a universal set $\mathcal{K}$. This problem has applications in private comparison, ranking, voting, etc. We propose an encoding algorithm that maps the classical information into distinguishable quantum states, along with a decoding algorithm that exploits the distinguishability of the mapped states. The proposed scheme can also be used to calculate the $N$ party private summation modulo $P$.

Verifying user attributes to provide fine-grained access control to databases is fundamental to an attribute-based authentication system. In such systems, either a single (central) authority verifies all attributes, or multiple independent authorities verify individual attributes distributedly to allow a user to access records stored on the servers. While a \emph{central} setup is more communication cost efficient, it causes privacy breach of \emph{all} user attributes to a central authority. Recently, Jafarpisheh et al. studied an information theoretic formulation of the \emph{distributed} multi-authority setup with $N$ non-colluding authorities, $N$ attributes and $K$ possible values for each attribute, called an $(N,K)$ distributed attribute-based private access control (DAPAC) system, where each server learns only one attribute value that it verifies, and remains oblivious to the remaining $N-1$ attributes. We show that off-loading a subset of attributes to a central server for verification improves the achievable rate from $\frac{1}{2K}$ in Jafarpisheh et al. to $\frac{1}{K+1}$ in this paper, thus \emph{almost doubling the rate} for relatively large $K$, while sacrificing the privacy of a few possibly non-sensitive attributes.

In a communication setting where multiple sources share a single channel to provide status updates to a remote monitor, source transmissions need to be scheduled appropriately to maintain timely communication between each of the sources and the monitor. We consider age-agnostic scheduling policies which are advantageous due to their simplicity of implementation. Further, we focus on a special class of age-agnostic policies, called cyclic schedulers, where each source is scheduled based on a fixed cyclic pattern. We use weighted average age of information (AoI) to quantify the timeliness of communication. We develop a Markov chain formulation to compute the exact mean AoI for the case of two-source cyclic schedulers. Based on the obtained age expression, we develop an algorithm that generates near-optimal cyclic schedulers to minimize the weighted average AoI for two heterogeneous sources, in the presence of channel errors.

We study cyclic scheduling for generate-at-will (GAW) multi-source status update systems with heterogeneous service times and packet drop probabilities, with the aim of minimizing the weighted sum age of information (AoI), called system AoI, or the weighted sum peak AoI (PAoI), called system PAoI. In particular, we obtain well-performing cyclic schedulers which can easily scale to thousands of information sources and which also have low online implementation complexity. Age of incorrect information (AoII) has recently been proposed as an alternative to existing information freshness metrics for real-time sampling and estimation problems involving information sources that are tracked by remote monitors. Different from existing metrics, AoII penalizes the incorrect information by increasing linearly with time as long as the source and the monitor are de-synchronized, and is reset when they are synchronized back. While AoII has generally been investigated for discrete time information sources, we develop a novel analytical model in this paper for push- and pull-based sampling and transmission of a continuous time Markov chain (CTMC) process. In the pull-based model, the sensor starts transmitting information on the observed CTMC only when a pull request from the monitor is received. On the other hand, in the push-based scenario, the sensor, being aware of the AoII process, samples and transmits when the AoII process exceeds a random threshold. The proposed analytical model for both scenarios is based on the construction of a discrete time MC (DTMC) making state transitions at the embedded epochs of synchronization points, using the theory of absorbing CTMCs, and in particular phase-type distributions. For a given sampling policy, analytical models to obtain the mean AoII and the average sampling rate are developed. Numerical results are presented to validate the analytical model as well as to provide insight on optimal sampling policies under sampling rate constraints.

This paper explores opportunities and challenges of task (goal)-oriented and semantic communications for next-generation (NextG) communication networks through the integration of multi-task learning. This approach employs deep neural networks representing a dedicated encoder at the transmitter and multiple task-specific decoders at the receiver, collectively trained to handle diverse tasks including semantic information preservation, source input reconstruction, and integrated sensing and communications. To extend the applicability from point-to-point links to multi-receiver settings, we envision the deployment of decoders at various receivers, where decentralized learning addresses the challenges of communication load and privacy concerns, leveraging federated learning techniques that distribute model updates across decentralized nodes. However, the efficacy of this approach is contingent on the robustness of the employed deep learning models. We scrutinize potential vulnerabilities stemming from adversarial attacks during both training and testing phases. These attacks aim to manipulate both the inputs at the encoder at the transmitter and the signals received over the air on the receiver side, highlighting the importance of fortifying semantic communications against potential multi-domain exploits. Overall, the joint and robust design of task-oriented communications, semantic communications, and integrated sensing and communications in a multi-task learning framework emerges as the key enabler for context-aware, resource-efficient, and secure communications ultimately needed in NextG network systems.

As the landscape of time-sensitive applications gains prominence in 5G/6G communications, timeliness of information updates at network nodes has become crucial, which is popularly quantified in the literature by the age of information metric. However, as we devise policies to improve age of information of our systems, we inadvertently introduce a new vulnerability for adversaries to exploit. In this article, we comprehensively discuss the diverse threats that age-based systems are vulnerable to. We begin with discussion on densely interconnected networks that employ gossiping between nodes to expedite dissemination of dynamic information in the network, and show how the age-based nature of gossiping renders these networks uniquely susceptible to threats such as timestomping attacks, jamming attacks, and the propagation of misinformation. Later, we survey adversarial works within simpler network settings, specifically in one-hop and two-hop configurations, and delve into adversarial robustness concerning challenges posed by jamming, timestomping, and issues related to privacy leakage. We conclude this article with future directions that aim to address challenges posed by more intelligent adversaries and robustness of networks to them.

Gossiping is a communication mechanism, used for fast information dissemination in a network, where each node of the network randomly shares its information with the neighboring nodes. To characterize the notion of fastness in the context of gossip networks, age of information (AoI) is used as a timeliness metric. In this article, we summarize the recent works related to timely gossiping in a network. We start with the introduction of randomized gossip algorithms as an epidemic algorithm for database maintenance, and how the gossiping literature was later developed in the context of rumor spreading, message passing and distributed mean estimation. Then, we motivate the need for timely gossiping in applications such as source tracking and decentralized learning. We evaluate timeliness scaling of gossiping in various network topologies, such as, fully connected, ring, grid, generalized ring, hierarchical, and sparse asymmetric networks. We discuss age-aware gossiping and the higher order moments of the age process. We also consider different variations of gossiping in networks, such as, file slicing and network coding, reliable and unreliable sources, information mutation, different adversarial actions in gossiping, and energy harvesting sensors. Finally, we conclude this article with a few open problems and future directions in timely gossiping.

This paper introduces a deep learning approach to dynamic spectrum access, leveraging the synergy of multi-modal image and spectrum data for the identification of potential transmitters. We consider an edge device equipped with a camera that is taking images of potential objects such as vehicles that may harbor transmitters. Recognizing the computational constraints and trust issues associated with on-device computation, we propose a collaborative system wherein the edge device communicates selectively processed information to a trusted receiver acting as a fusion center, where a decision is made to identify whether a potential transmitter is present, or not. To achieve this, we employ task-oriented communications, utilizing an encoder at the transmitter for joint source coding, channel coding, and modulation. This architecture efficiently transmits essential information of reduced dimension for object classification. Simultaneously, the transmitted signals may reflect off objects and return to the transmitter, allowing for the collection of target sensing data. Then the collected sensing data undergoes a second round of encoding at the transmitter, with the reduced-dimensional information communicated back to the fusion center through task-oriented communications. On the receiver side, a decoder performs the task of identifying a transmitter by fusing data received through joint sensing and task-oriented communications. The two encoders at the transmitter and the decoder at the receiver are jointly trained, enabling a seamless integration of image classification and wireless signal detection. Using AWGN and Rayleigh channel models, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, showcasing high accuracy in transmitter identification across diverse channel conditions while sustaining low latency in decision making.

We consider the setup of a constrained optimization problem with two agents $E_1$ and $E_2$ who jointly wish to learn the optimal solution set while keeping their feasible sets $\mathcal{P}_1$ and $\mathcal{P}_2$ private from each other. The objective function $f$ is globally known and each feasible set is a collection of points from a global alphabet. We adopt a sequential symmetric private information retrieval (SPIR) framework where one of the agents (say $E_1$) privately checks in $\mathcal{P}_2$, the presence of candidate solutions of the problem constrained to $\mathcal{P}_1$ only, while learning no further information on $\mathcal{P}_2$ than the solution alone. Further, we extract an information theoretically private threshold PSI (ThPSI) protocol from our scheme and characterize its download cost. We show that, compared to privately acquiring the feasible set $\mathcal{P}_1\cap \mathcal{P}_2$ using an SPIR-based private set intersection (PSI) protocol, and finding the optimum, our scheme is better as it incurs less information leakage and less download cost than the former. Over all possible uniform mappings of $f$ to a fixed range of values, our scheme outperforms the former with a high probability.

We study the scheduling problem for a multi-source single-server generate-at-will (GAW) status update system with sources having heterogeneous service times and weights, with the goal of minimizing the weighted sum age of information (AoI). In particular, we study \emph{age-agnostic} schedulers which rely only on the first two moments of the source service times and they are relatively easier to implement than their age-aware counterparts which make use of the actual realizations of the service times. In particular, we focus on age-agnostic cyclic schedulers with $O(1)$ runtime complexity where status updates from multiple sources are scheduled according to a fixed finite transmission pattern. We first develop an analytical method to obtain the exact average AoI of each source when a transmission pattern is given. Then, we derive the optimum transmission pattern in closed form for the specific case of two sources. For general number of sources, we propose a novel algorithm, called IS (Insertion Search), for constructing transmission patterns, and we show that IS is capable of producing the optimum pattern for two-source systems, and it outperforms other existing age-agnostic schemes, for the case of more than two sources. Ensuring high-quality video content for wireless users has become increasingly vital. Nevertheless, maintaining a consistent level of video quality faces challenges due to the fluctuating encoded bitrate, primarily caused by dynamic video content, especially in live streaming scenarios. Video compression is typically employed to eliminate unnecessary redundancies within and between video frames, thereby reducing the required bandwidth for video transmission. The encoded bitrate and the quality of the compressed video depend on encoder parameters, specifically, the quantization parameter (QP). Poor choices of encoder parameters can result in reduced bandwidth efficiency and high likelihood of non-conformance. Non-conformance refers to the violation of the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) constraint for an encoded video segment. To address these issues, a real-time deep learning-based H.264 controller is proposed. This controller dynamically estimates the optimal encoder parameters based on the content of a video chunk with minimal delay. The objective is to maintain video quality in terms of PSNR above a specified threshold while minimizing the average bitrate of the compressed video. Experimental results, conducted on both QCIF dataset and a diverse range of random videos from public datasets, validate the effectiveness of this approach. We consider a system model with two sources, a reliable source and an unreliable source, who are responsible for disseminating updates regarding a process to an age-based gossip network of $n$ nodes. Nodes wish to have fresh information, however, they have preference for packets that originated at the reliable source and are willing to sacrifice their version age of information by up to $G$ versions to switch from an unreliable packet to a reliable packet. We study how this protocol impacts the prevalence of unreliable packets at nodes in the network and their version age. Using a stochastic hybrid system (SHS) framework, we formulate analytical equations to characterize two quantities: expected fraction of nodes with unreliable packets and expected version age of information at network nodes. We show that as $G$ increases, fewer nodes have unreliable packet, however, their version age increases as well, thereby inducing a freshness-reliability trade-off in the network. We present numerical results to support our findings.

This paper explores the integration of deep learning techniques for joint sensing and communications, with an extension to semantic communications. The integrated system comprises a transmitter and receiver operating over a wireless channel, subject to noise and fading. The transmitter employs a deep neural network (DNN), namely an encoder, for joint operations of source coding, channel coding, and modulation, while the receiver utilizes another DNN, namely a decoder, for joint operations of demodulation, channel decoding, and source decoding to reconstruct the data samples. The transmitted signal serves a dual purpose, supporting communication with the receiver and enabling sensing. When a target is present, the reflected signal is received, and another DNN decoder is utilized for sensing. This decoder is responsible for detecting the target's presence and determining its range. All these DNNs, including one encoder and two decoders, undergo joint training through multi-task learning, considering data and channel characteristics. This paper extends to incorporate semantic communications by introducing an additional DNN, another decoder at the receiver, operating as a task classifier. This decoder evaluates the fidelity of label classification for received signals, enhancing the integration of semantics within the communication process. The study presents results based on using the CIFAR-10 as the input data and accounting for channel effects like Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh fading. The results underscore the effectiveness of multi-task deep learning in achieving high-fidelity joint sensing and semantic communications.

We study a remote monitoring system in which a mutually independent and heterogeneous collection of finite-state irreducible continuous time Markov chain (CTMC) based information sources is considered. In this system, a common remote monitor queries the instantaneous states of the individual CTMCs according to a Poisson process with possibly different intensities across the sources, in order to maintain accurate estimates of the original sources. \color{black}Three information freshness models are considered to quantify the accuracy of the remote estimates: fresh when equal (FWE), fresh when sampled (FWS) and fresh when close (FWC). For each of these freshness models, closed-form expressions are derived for mean information freshness for a given source. Using these expressions, optimum sampling rates for all sources are obtained so as to maximize the weighted sum freshness of the monitoring system, subject to an overall sampling rate constraint. This optimization problem leads to a water-filling solution with quadratic worst case computational complexity in the number of information sources. We consider a gossip network, consisting of $n$ nodes, which tracks the information at a source. The source updates its information with a Poisson arrival process and also sends updates to the nodes in the network. The nodes themselves can exchange information among themselves to become as timely as possible. However, the network structure is sparse and irregular, i.e., not every node is connected to every other node in the network, rather, the order of connectivity is low, and varies across different nodes. This asymmetry of the network implies that the nodes in the network do not perform equally in terms of timelines. Due to the gossiping nature of the network, some nodes are able to track the source very timely, whereas, some nodes fall behind versions quite often. In this work, we investigate how the rate-constrained source should distribute its update rate across the network to maintain fairness regarding timeliness, i.e., the overall worst case performance of the network can be minimized. Due to the continuous search space for optimum rate allocation, we formulate this problem as a continuum-armed bandit problem and employ Gaussian process based Bayesian optimization to meet a trade-off between exploration and exploitation sequentially.

Providing wireless users with high-quality video content has become increasingly important. However, ensuring consistent video quality poses challenges due to variable encoded bitrate caused by dynamic video content and fluctuating channel bitrate caused by wireless fading effects. Suboptimal selection of encoder parameters can lead to video quality loss due to underutilized bandwidth or the introduction of video artifacts due to packet loss. To address this, a real-time deep learning based H.264 controller is proposed. This controller leverages instantaneous channel quality data driven from the physical layer, along with the video chunk, to dynamically estimate the optimal encoder parameters with a negligible delay in real-time. The objective is to maintain an encoded video bitrate slightly below the available channel bitrate. Experimental results, conducted on both QCIF dataset and a diverse selection of random videos from public datasets, validate the effectiveness of the approach. Remarkably, improvements of 10-20 dB in PSNR with repect to the state-of-the-art adaptive bitrate video streaming is achieved, with an average packet drop rate as low as 0.002.

We consider the problem of private membership aggregation (PMA), in which a user counts the number of times a certain element is stored in a system of independent parties that store arbitrary sets of elements from a universal alphabet. The parties are not allowed to learn which element is being counted by the user. Further, neither the user nor the other parties are allowed to learn the stored elements of each party involved in the process. PMA is a generalization of the recently introduced problem of $K$ private set intersection ($K$-PSI). The $K$-PSI problem considers a set of $M$ parties storing arbitrary sets of elements, and a user who wants to determine if a certain element is repeated at least at $K$ parties out of the $M$ parties without learning which party has the required element and which party does not. To solve the general problem of PMA, we dissect it into four categories based on the privacy requirement and the collusions among databases/parties. We map these problems into equivalent private information retrieval (PIR) problems. We propose achievable schemes for each of the four variants of the problem based on the concept of cross-subspace alignment (CSA). The proposed schemes achieve \emph{linear} communication complexity as opposed to the state-of-the-art $K$-PSI scheme that requires \emph{exponential} complexity even though our PMA problems contain more security and privacy constraints.

A sensor observes a random phenomenon and transmits updates about the observed phenomenon to a remote monitor. The sensor may experience intermittent failures in which case the monitor will not receive any updates until the sensor has recovered. The monitor wants to keep a timely view of the observed process, as well as to detect any sensor failures, using the timings of the updates. We analyze this system model from a goal-oriented and semantic communication point of view, where the communication has multiple goals and multiple meanings/semantics. For the first goal, the performance is quantified by the age of information of the observed process at the monitor. For the second goal, the performance is quantified by the probability of error of the monitor's estimation of the sensor's failure status. Each arriving update packet brings both an information update and an indication about the sensor's status. The monitor estimates the failure status of the sensor by using the timings of the received updates. This estimation is subject to error, since a long period without any update receptions may be due to a low update rate or a failure of the sensor. We examine the trade-off between these two goals. We show that the probability of error of estimating a sensor failure decreases with increased update rate, however, the age of information is minimized with an intermediate update rate (not too low or high).

We consider a gossip network consisting of a source forwarding updates and $n$ nodes placed geometrically in a ring formation. Each node gossips with $f(n)$ nodes on either side, thus communicating with $2f(n)$ nodes in total. $f(n)$ is a sub-linear, non-decreasing and positive function. The source keeps updates of a process, that might be generated or observed, and shares them with the nodes in the ring network. The nodes in the ring network communicate with their neighbors and disseminate these version updates using a push-style gossip strategy. We use the version age metric to quantify the timeliness of information at the nodes. Prior to this work, it was shown that the version age scales as $O(n^{\frac{1}{2}})$ in a ring network, i.e., when $f(n)=1$, and as $O(\log{n})$ in a fully-connected network, i.e., when $2f(n)=n-1$. In this paper, we find an upper bound for the average version age for a set of nodes in such a network in terms of the number of nodes $n$ and the number of gossiped neighbors $2 f(n)$. We show that if $f(n) = \Omega(\frac{n}{\log^2{n}})$, then the version age still scales as $\theta(\log{n})$. We also show that if $f(n)$ is a rational function, then the version age also scales as a rational function. In particular, if $f(n)=n^\alpha$, then version age is $O(n^\frac{1-\alpha}{2})$. Finally, through numerical calculations we verify that, for all practical purposes, if $f(n) = \Omega(n^{0.6})$, the version age scales as $O(\log{n})$.

We consider both the classical and quantum variations of $X$-secure, $E$-eavesdropped and $T$-colluding symmetric private information retrieval (SPIR). This is the first work to study SPIR with $X$-security in classical or quantum variations. We first develop a scheme for classical $X$-secure, $E$-eavesdropped and $T$-colluding SPIR (XSETSPIR) based on a modified version of cross subspace alignment (CSA), which achieves a rate of $R= 1 - \frac{X+\max(T,E)}{N}$. The modified scheme achieves the same rate as the scheme used for $X$-secure PIR with the extra benefit of symmetric privacy. Next, we extend this scheme to its quantum counterpart based on the $N$-sum box abstraction. This is the first work to consider the presence of eavesdroppers in quantum private information retrieval (QPIR). In the quantum variation, the eavesdroppers have better access to information over the quantum channel compared to the classical channel due to the over-the-air decodability. To that end, we develop another scheme specialized to combat eavesdroppers over quantum channels. The scheme proposed for $X$-secure, $E$-eavesdropped and $T$-colluding quantum SPIR (XSETQSPIR) in this work maintains the super-dense coding gain from the shared entanglement between the databases, i.e., achieves a rate of $R_Q = \min\left\{ 1, 2\left(1-\frac{X+\max(T,E)}{N}\right)\right\}$.

We study the structure of the optimal sampling policy to minimize the average age of information when the channel state (i.e., busy or idle) is not immediately perceived by the transmitter upon the delivery of a sample due to random delays in the feedback (ACK) channel. In this setting, we show that it is not always optimal to wait for ACKs before sampling, and thus, early sampling before the arrival of an ACK may be optimal. We show that, under certain conditions on the distribution of the ACK delays, the optimal policy is a mixture of two threshold policies.

This paper studies task-oriented, otherwise known as goal-oriented, communications, in a setting where a transmitter communicates with multiple receivers, each with its own task to complete on a dataset, e.g., images, available at the transmitter. A multi-task deep learning approach that involves training a common encoder at the transmitter and individual decoders at the receivers is presented for joint optimization of completing multiple tasks and communicating with multiple receivers. By providing efficient resource allocation at the edge of 6G networks, the proposed approach allows the communications system to adapt to varying channel conditions and achieves task-specific objectives while minimizing transmission overhead. Joint training of the encoder and decoders using multi-task learning captures shared information across tasks and optimizes the communication process accordingly. By leveraging the broadcast nature of wireless communications, multi-receiver task-oriented communications (MTOC) reduces the number of transmissions required to complete tasks at different receivers. Performance evaluation conducted on the MNIST, Fashion MNIST, and CIFAR-10 datasets (with image classification considered for different tasks) demonstrates the effectiveness of MTOC in terms of classification accuracy and resource utilization compared to single-task-oriented communication systems.

We consider a slotted communication system consisting of a source, a cache, a user and a timestomping adversary. The time horizon consists of total $T$ time slots, such that the source transmits update packets to the user directly over $T_{1}$ time slots and to the cache over $T_{2}$ time slots. We consider $T_{1}\ll T_{2}$, $T_{1}+T_{2} < T$, such that the source transmits to the user once between two consecutive cache updates. Update packets are marked with timestamps corresponding to their generation times at the source. All nodes have a buffer size of one and store the packet with the latest timestamp to minimize their age of information. In this setting, we consider the presence of an oblivious adversary that fully controls the communication link between the cache and the user. The adversary manipulates the timestamps of outgoing packets from the cache to the user, with the goal of bringing staleness at the user node. At each time slot, the adversary can choose to either forward the cached packet to the user, after changing its timestamp to current time $t$, thereby rebranding an old packet as a fresh packet and misleading the user into accepting it, or stay idle. The user compares the timestamps of every received packet with the latest packet in its possession to keep the fresher one and discard the staler packet. If the user receives update packets from both cache and source in a time slot, then the packet from source prevails. The goal of the source is to design an algorithm to minimize the average age at the user, and the goal of the adversary is to increase the average age at the user. We formulate this problem in an online learning setting and provide a fundamental lower bound on the competitive ratio for this problem. We further propose a deterministic algorithm with a provable guarantee on its competitive ratio.

We consider a gossip network consisting of a source generating updates and $n$ nodes connected in a two-dimensional square grid. The source keeps updates of a process, that might be generated or observed, and shares them with the grid network. The nodes in the grid network communicate with their neighbors and disseminate these version updates using a push-style gossip strategy. We use the version age metric to quantify the timeliness of information at the nodes. We find an upper bound for the average version age for a set of nodes in a general network. Using this, we show that the average version age at a node scales as $O(n^{\frac{1}{3}})$ in a grid network. Prior to our work, it has been known that when $n$ nodes are connected on a ring the version age scales as $O(n^{\frac{1}{2}})$, and when they are connected on a fully-connected graph the version age scales as $O(\log n)$. Ours is the first work to show an age scaling result for a connectivity structure other than the ring and fully-connected networks that represent two extremes of network connectivity. Our work shows that higher connectivity on a grid compared to a ring lowers the age experience of each node from $O(n^{\frac{1}{2}})$ to $O(n^{\frac{1}{3}})$.

In federated submodel learning (FSL), a machine learning model is divided into multiple submodels based on different types of data used for training. Each user involved in the training process only downloads and updates the submodel relevant to the user's local data, which significantly reduces the communication cost compared to classical federated learning (FL). However, the index of the submodel updated by the user and the values of the updates reveal information about the user's private data. In order to guarantee information-theoretic privacy in FSL, the model is stored at multiple non-colluding databases, and the user sends queries and updates to each database in such a way that no information is revealed on the updating submodel index or the values of the updates. In this work, we consider the practical scenario where the multiple non-colluding databases are allowed to have arbitrary storage constraints. The goal of this work is to develop read-write schemes and storage mechanisms for FSL that efficiently utilize the available storage in each database to store the submodel parameters in such a way that the total communication cost is minimized while guaranteeing information-theoretic privacy of the updating submodel index and the values of the updates. We introduce the problem of deceptive information retrieval (DIR), in which a user wishes to download a required file out of multiple independent files stored in a system of databases while \emph{deceiving} the databases by making the databases' predictions on the user-required file index incorrect with high probability. Conceptually, DIR is an extension of private information retrieval (PIR). In PIR, a user downloads a required file without revealing its index to any of the databases. The metric of deception is defined as the probability of error of databases' prediction on the user-required file, minus the corresponding probability of error in PIR. The problem is defined on time-sensitive data that keeps updating from time to time. In the proposed scheme, the user deceives the databases by sending \emph{real} queries to download the required file at the time of the requirement and \emph{dummy} queries at multiple distinct future time instances to manipulate the probabilities of sending each query for each file requirement, using which the databases' make the predictions on the user-required file index. The proposed DIR scheme is based on a capacity achieving probabilistic PIR scheme, and achieves rates lower than the PIR capacity due to the additional downloads made to deceive the databases. When the required level of deception is zero, the proposed scheme achieves the PIR capacity.

We consider an asynchronous hierarchical federated learning (AHFL) setting with a client-edge-cloud framework. The clients exchange the trained parameters with their corresponding edge servers, which update the locally aggregated model. This model is then transmitted to all the clients in the local cluster. The edge servers communicate to the central cloud server for global model aggregation. The goal of each client is to converge to the global model, while maintaining timeliness of the clients, i.e., having optimum training iteration time. We investigate the convergence criteria for such a system with dense clusters. Our analysis shows that for a system of $n$ clients with fixed average timeliness, the convergence in finite time is probabilistically guaranteed, if the nodes are divided into $O(1)$ number of clusters, that is, if the system is built as a sparse set of edge servers with dense client bases each.

We consider a time slotted communication network with a base station (BS) and a user. At each time slot a fresh update packet arrives at the BS with probability $p>0$. When the BS transmits an update packet for the first time, it goes through with a success probability of $q_1$. In all subsequent re-transmissions, the packet goes through with a success probability of $q_2$ where $q_2>q_1$, due to the accumulation of observations at the receiver used to decode the packet. When the packet goes through the first time, the age of the user drops to 1, while when the packet goes through in subsequent transmissions, the age of the user drops to the age of the packet since its generation. Thus, when the BS is in the process of re-transmitting an old packet, if it receives a new packet, it has to decide whether to re-transmit the old packet with higher probability of successful transmission but resulting in higher age, or to transmit the new packet which will result in a lower age upon successful reception but this will happen with lower probability. In this paper, we provide an optimal algorithm to solve this problem.

We consider a special case of $X$-secure $T$-private information retrieval (XSTPIR), where the security requirement is \emph{asymmetric} due to possible missing communication links between the $N$ databases considered in the system. We define the problem with a communication matrix that indicates all possible communications among the databases, and propose a database grouping mechanism that collects subsets of databases in an optimal manner, followed by a group-based PIR scheme to perform asymmetric XSTPIR with the goal of maximizing the communication rate (minimizing the download cost). We provide an upper bound on the general achievable rate of asymmetric XSTPIR, and show that the proposed scheme achieves this upper bound in some cases. The proposed approach outperforms classical XSTPIR under certain conditions, and the results of this work show that unlike in the symmetric case, some databases with certain properties can be dropped to achieve higher rates, concluding that more databases is not always better.

We consider a network of $n$ user nodes that receives updates from a source and employs an age-based gossip protocol for faster dissemination of version updates to all nodes. When a node forwards its packet to another node, the packet information gets mutated with probability $p$ during transmission, creating misinformation. The receiver node does not know whether an incoming packet information is different from the packet information originally at the sender node. We assume that truth prevails over misinformation, and therefore, when a receiver encounters both accurate information and misinformation corresponding to the same version, the accurate information gets chosen for storage at the node. We study the expected fraction of nodes with correct information in the network and version age at the nodes in this setting using stochastic hybrid systems (SHS) modelling and study their properties. We observe that very high or very low gossiping rates help curb misinformation, and misinformation spread is higher with moderate gossiping rates. We support our theoretical findings with simulation results which shed further light on the behavior of above quantities.

Private information retrieval (PIR) is a privacy setting that allows a user to download a required message from a set of messages stored in a system of databases without revealing the index of the required message to the databases. PIR was introduced under computational privacy guarantees, and is recently re-formulated to provide information-theoretic guarantees, resulting in \emph{information theoretic privacy}. Subsequently, many important variants of the basic PIR problem have been studied focusing on fundamental performance limits as well as achievable schemes. More recently, a variety of conceptual extensions of PIR have been introduced, such as, private set intersection (PSI), private set union (PSU), and private read-update-write (PRUW). Some of these extensions are mainly intended to solve the privacy issues that arise in distributed learning applications due to the extensive dependency of machine learning on users' private data. In this article, we first provide an introduction to basic PIR with examples, followed by a brief description of its immediate variants. We then provide a detailed discussion on the conceptual extensions of PIR, along with potential research directions.

We consider a fully-connected wireless gossip network which consists of a source and $n$ receiver nodes. The source updates itself with a Poisson process and also sends updates to the nodes as Poisson arrivals. Upon receiving the updates, the nodes update their knowledge about the source. The nodes gossip the data among themselves in the form of Poisson arrivals to disperse their knowledge about the source. The total gossiping rate is bounded by a constraint. The goal of the network is to be as timely as possible with the source. We propose a scheme which we coin \emph{age sense updating multiple access in networks (ASUMAN)}, which is a distributed opportunistic gossiping scheme, where after each time the source updates itself, each node waits for a time proportional to its current age and broadcasts a signal to the other nodes of the network. This allows the nodes in the network which have higher age to remain silent and only the low-age nodes to gossip, thus utilizing a significant portion of the constrained total gossip rate. We calculate the average age for a typical node in such a network with symmetric settings, and show that the theoretical upper bound on the age scales as $O(1)$. ASUMAN, with an average age of $O(1)$, offers significant gains compared to a system where the nodes just gossip blindly with a fixed update rate, in which case the age scales as $O(\log n)$. Further, we analyzed the performance of ASUMAN for fractional, finitely connected, sublinear and hierarchical cluster networks. Finally, we show that the $O(1)$ age scaling can be extended to asymmetric settings as well. We study the version age of information in a multi-hop multi-cast cache-enabled network, where updates at the source are marked with incrementing version numbers, and the inter-update times on the links are not necessarily exponentially distributed. We focus on the set of non-arithmetic distributions, which includes continuous probability distributions as a subset, with finite first and second moments for inter-update times. We first characterize the instantaneous version age of information at each node for an arbitrary network. We then explicate the recursive equations for instantaneous version age of information in multi-hop networks and employ semi-martingale representation of renewal processes to derive closed form expressions for the expected version age of information at an end user. We show that the expected age in a multi-hop network exhibits an additive structure. Further, we show that the expected age at each user is proportional to the variance of inter-update times at all links between a user and the source. We consider a semantics-aware communication system, where timeliness is the semantic measure, with a source which maintains the most current version of a file, and a network of $n$ user nodes with the goal to acquire the latest version of the file. The source gets updated with newer file versions as a point process, and forwards them to the user nodes, which further forward them to their neighbors using a memoryless gossip protocol. We study the average version age of the network in the presence of $\tilde{n}$ jammers that disrupt inter-node communications, for the connectivity-constrained ring topology and the connectivity-rich fully connected topology. For the ring topology, we construct an alternate system model of mini-rings and prove that the version age of the original model can be sandwiched between constant multiples of the version age of the alternate model. We show in a ring network that when the number of jammers scales as a fractional power of the network size, i.e., $\tilde n= cn^\alpha$, the version age scales as $\sqrt{n}$ when $\alpha < \frac{1}{2}$, and as $n^{\alpha}$ when $\alpha \geq \frac{1}{2}$. As version age of a ring network without any jammers scales as $\sqrt{n}$, our result implies that version age with gossiping is robust against upto $\sqrt{n}$ jammers in a ring network. We then study the connectivity-rich fully connected topology, where we derive a greedy approach to place $\tilde{n}$ jammers to maximize age of the resultant network, which uses jammers to isolate as many nodes as possible, thereby consolidating all links into a single mini-fully connected network. We show in this network that version age scales as $\log{n}$ when $\tilde{n}=cn\log{n}$ and as $n^{\alpha-1}$, $1<\alpha\leq2$ when $\tilde{n}=cn^{\alpha}$, implying the network is robust against $n\log{n}$ jammers, since the age in a fully connected network without jammers scales as $\log{n}$., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2205.03328

In federated learning (FL), a machine learning (ML) model is collectively trained by a large number of users, using their private data in their local devices. With top $r$ sparsification in FL, the users only upload the most significant $r$ fraction of updates, and the servers only send the most significant $r'$ fraction of parameters to the users in order to reduce the communication cost. However, the values and the indices of the sparse updates leak information about the users' private data. In this work, we consider an FL setting where $N$ non-colluding databases store the model to be trained, from which the users download and update sparse parameters privately, without revealing the values of the updates or their indices to the databases. We propose four schemes with different properties to perform this task while achieving the minimum communication costs, and show that the information theoretic privacy of both values and positions of the sparse updates can be guaranteed. This is achieved at a considerable storage cost, though. To alleviate this, we generalize the schemes in such a way that the storage cost is reduced at the expense of a certain amount of information leakage, using a model segmentation mechanism.
