The papers are organized in topical sections on computational intelligence, evolutionary computation, evolutionary multi-objective and dynamic optimization, evolutionary learning systems, neural networks, classification and recognition, bioinformatics and bioengineering, evolutionary data mining and knowledge discovery, intelligent GIS and control, theory of intelligent computation, combinational and numerical optimization, as well as real-world applications.

A foreword for the present workshop proceedings cannot be provided without first looking at the larger context of the AMI conference in which the workshops were organized. The AMI 2007 conference has roots in preceding events, but in many respects, AMI can be called a novel conference format and hence a premiere. Among the several aims that inspired and shaped this new conference format, the following two are particularly worth considering: (1) to provide a forum for the ambient intel- gence flavor of research on the Post-PC era of computer science, complementing the ubiquitous computing and pervasive computing flavors emphasized by alrea- existing conferences; (2) to offer an event that attracts contributions from all over the globe yet emphasizes European strengths – with particular reference to the Infor- tion Society Technologies (IST) branch of the EU research framework programs (FPs), which carry the same label as the conference. The workshop organization chairs reflected these unique characteristics of the new AMI conference series in the call for workshop proposals using two corresponding measures: (1) by particularly soliciting workshops on in-depth topics corresponding to the above-mentioned ambient intelligence flavor of Post-PC research; (2) by offering two different workshop threads: one ‘usual'thread for advanced topics (called “SW workshops”) and one thread for workshops related to concrete EU FP6 and FP7 p- jects (called “EU workshops”).

The papers contained in this volume were presented at the fourth edition of the IFIP International Conference on Theoretical Computer Science (IFIP TCS), held August 23-24, 2006 in Santiago, Chile. They were selected from 44 pa­ pers submitted from 17 countries in response to the call for papers. A total of 16 submissions were accepted as full papers, yielding an acceptance rate of about 36%. Papers sohcited for IFIP TCS 2006 were meant to constitute orig­ inal contributions in two general areas: Algorithms, Complexity and Models of Computation; and Logic, Semantics, Specification and Verification. The conference also included six invited presentations: Marcelo Arenas (P- tificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Chile), Jozef Gruska (Masaryk University, Czech Republic), Claudio Gutierrez (Universidad de Chile, Chile), Marcos Kiwi (Universidad de Chile, Chile), Nicola Santoro (Carleton University, Canada), and Mihalis Yannakakis (Columbia University, USA). The abstracts of those presentations are included in this volume. In addition, Jozef Gruska and Nicola Santoro accepted our invitation to write full papers related to their talks. Those two surveys are included in the present volume as well. TCS is a biannual conference. The first edition was held in Sendai (Japan, 2000), followed by Montreal (Canada, 2002) and Toulouse (France, 2004).

'6th Symposium on Abstraction, Reformulation and Approximation'--Pref.

This volume contains the proceedings of SARA 2000, the fourth Symposium on Abstraction, Reformulations, and Approximation (SARA). The conference was held at Horseshoe Bay Resort and Conference Club, Lake LBJ, Texas, July 26– 29, 2000, just prior to the AAAI 2000 conference in Austin. Previous SARA conferences took place at Jackson Hole in Wyoming (1994), Ville d'Est´erel in Qu´ebec (1995), and Asilomar in California (1998). The symposium grewout of a series of workshops on abstraction, approximation, and reformulation that had taken place alongside AAAI since 1989. This year's symposium was actually scheduled to take place at Lago Vista Clubs & Resort on Lake Travis but, due to the resort's failure to pay taxes, the conference had to be moved late in the day. This mischance engendered eleventh-hour reformulations, abstractions, and resource re-allocations of its own. Such are the perils of organizing a conference. This is the?rst SARA for which the proceedings have been published in the LNAI series of Springer-Verlag. We hope that this is a re?ection of the increased maturity of the?eld and that the increased visibility brought by the publication of this volume will help the discipline grow even further. Abstractions, reformulations, and approximations (AR&A) have found - plications in a variety of disciplines and problems including automatic progr- ming, constraint satisfaction, design, diagnosis, machine learning, planning, qu- itative reasoning, scheduling, resource allocation, and theorem proving. The - pers in this volume capture a cross-section of these application domains.
