At the end of 1996, the U.S. had a "computer density" of 40 computers per 100 people, with PCs accounting for 38 of those computers, reports the latest edition of the Computer Industry Almanac. By the end of 2000, the almanac predicts U.S. computer density will grow to 58 computers per 100 people.
