International audience; The manufacturing of the (U,Pu)O$_2$ mixed fuel pelletsdesigned for SFR are being conducted by the frenchactors CEA with support from ORANO and EDF,carrying out an approach covering all the manufacturingsteps, from the implementation of the UO$_2$ and PuO$_2$actinide oxide powders to the pellet sintering. A referencefabrication process has been proposed, considering theexperience feedback from fuel manufacturing for Phénixand SuperPhénix reactors. The recent developments dealwith the increase of the Pu content (up to 30%) and theeffects of aged Pu (thermal and radiolytic effects) whichare among the main challenges to sustain the closed fuelcycle. The R&D focuses firstly on experimental studies todeepen the understanding phenomena involved in thereference process. Further, a physical modelling isdeveloped to build a simulation tool in order to improvethe performance of each manufacturing steps in a lab-toplant approach. Modelling and simulations are based onspecific experiments (grinding and mixing process,mechanical measurement on tailored actinide powders,microscopic characterisation…).Advances has been achieved in the understanding andmodelling of physical phenomena describing thephenomenology of each steps. However, numerouschallenges remain today in the modelling.

International audience; The aim of the paper is to present the major results of a three years study which goal was to assess therisk of explosion due to hydrogen accumulation in closed containments used for the transportation ofradioactive materials. To do so, an experimental work on the flammability domain of multiple ternaryH$_2$/O$_2$/N$_2$ mixtures has been conducted at the CNRS-ICARE laboratory in collaboration with the CEA.The flammability limits of H$_2$/O$_2$/N$_2$ mixtures were assessed using two spherical bombs equipped with acentral ignition system consisting of two tungsten electrodes linked to a controlled high voltage dischargedevice. The combustion is monitored using two different diagnostics: pressure measurements during thecombustion test and the recording of the flame with a high-speed camera. A mixture is considered asflammable when both the imaging and the pressure indicate a successful ignition followed by a flamepropagation.The first part of the study has been focused on the precise determination of lower flammability limits ofH$_2$/O$_2$/N$_2$ mixtures at a wide range of pressure (from 0.3 bar up to 4 bar) and for different initialtemperatures ranging between 25°C and 100°C. The limit of the total inerting of a H$_2$/O$_2$ mixture by N$_2$has also been determined. In addition, the lower flammability limits of H$_2$/Air/H$_2$O$_{vapor}$ mixtures has alsobeen studied from 0.3 bar to 2 bar and from 25°C up to 200°C.The study has then been extended to the flammable domain close to the lower flammability limit and upto hydrogen concentration of 13%. The visualization of the flame coupled with the pressure monitoringhas allowed the observation and characterization of three sub-domains, each one with very specificbehaviour in terms of combustion parameters (maximum overpressure, explosion index).The first sub-domain close to the lower flammability limit allows the introduction of a new limit for thestudy of hydrogen risk in nuclear transport safety studies: the explosion severity low limit. Indeed, in thisdomain beginning after the low flammability limit, the overpressure stays very limited and opens a newway of considering safety studies related to hydrogen risk of explosion.

International audience; The French Commission for Atomic Energy and Alternative Energy (CEA) in collaboration with its indus-trial partners develops Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors (SFR) as industrial-scale demonstrators mainly guided by safety and operability objectives. In this paper, a SFR reactor associated to a nitrogen closed Brayton cycle for the Power Conversion System (PCS) is considered. In incidental and accidental con-ditions, the operation of reactor must be defined to keep it under control and to fulfil safety requirements. This paper is dedicated to an alternative procedure to control a Loss Of Off-site Power (LOOP). Usually, in case of LOOP, the SFR standard procedure relies on passive Decay Heat Removal (DHR) systems to cool down the primary circuit. In this paper, an alternative solution substitutes the latter by the gas Power Conversion System (PCS). The operation of the gas PCS required three regulations- The regulation of the Turbo-Machinery (TM) rotation speed to keep a gas flow in the PCS;- The sodium temperature regulation of the secondary circuit, once the cold shutdown state is reached, to adapt the heat removed by the gas PCS to the decay heat;- The regulation of the gas temperature at the inlet of the compressors, in the PCS, to keep an efficient heat sink.In the aim to optimize the alternative procedure for a LOOP a MultiObjective Problem (MOP) is solved. Two conflicting objectives are simultaneously minimized the time to reach the cold shutdown state and the maximum of the thermal gradient through the main vessel. The decision variables are the two de-scriptive parameters of the TM rotation speed target to solve the MOP. The multiobjective optimization step is supported by the study of different TM rotation speed targets; a Latin hypercube design of ex-periments is performed with the CATHARE2 code and is used to build the Pareto front. In this way, the alternative procedure allows the reactor to reach the cold shutdown state in a time ranging from 30 minutes to 4 hours, whereas passive DHR systems do not allow the reactor to reach this state 24 hours after the initiating events. A short time to reach the safety state induces a maximum of the thermal gradient through the main vessel about twice higher than the procedure with passive DHR systems; whereas a long delay to reach the safety state can divide the maximum of the thermal gradient through the main vessel by four. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that each decision variable is more influent on one of the two objectives. This property is exploited to favor a specific objective and large ranges for the decision variables define a great diversity of optimum compromises.Thanks to the regulation of the TM rotation speed, the gas PCS is hence an adaptable system to opti-mize the thermalhydraulic behavior of a SFR during a LOOP. Moreover, this alternative procedure strengthens the diversification of the systems to fulfil the DHR function.

Abstract

In this paper, it is shown how numerical simulations can help designing an ultrasonic instrument operating in harsh conditions. To prevent fuel handling errors in sodium cooled fast reactors, the identification of fuel sub-assemblies using ultrasound is being investigated. It is based on the interpretation of a code (aligned notches) engraved on the sub-assembly head using an emitting/receiving ultrasonic sensor. This reading is performed in liquid sodium with high temperature (up to 600°C) transducers. A first experiment in liquid sodium demonstrated the feasibility of this method. The reading quality and robustness depend on various parameters related to the ultrasonic beam (spectral response, focal distance, focal spot size), the code geometry (especially the notches’ dimensions) and geometrical alignments. In order to avoid numerous experiments, two numerical models are developed. The first one is a finite element simulation of the sensor providing its radiated field. This model is validated with the well-known analytic solution of the Rayleigh integral; then it is applied to the sensor used in the sodium experiment. The focal distance and focal spot diameter are close to the expected values. The second simulation, using CIVA software, provides the ultrasonic scan of the code. The result is in good agreement with the sodium experiment and a first comparison with a water experiment shows that this numerical tool is relevant for easily taking into account misalignment and misorientation of the scan.

Abstract

The phenomenon of liquid-gas phase transition occurring in heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies is a subject of contemporary interest in recent years [1]. The largest cluster is an important order parameter for studying nuclear liquid gas phase transition in intermediate energy heavy ion reactions. It has been proposed [2] that the double humped distribution (hence the name bimodality) of the largest cluster probability in nuclear multifragmentation is a measurable signature of nuclear liquid gas phase transition. But the origin of the experimentally observed bimodality is still not clear. Some recent work shows that it is due to presence of memory effect of entrance channel where thermal equilibrium is not achieved in this energy domain. The signal was interpreted in these studies as a dynamical bifurcation of reaction mechanism, induced by fluctuation of collision rate, which leads to fluctuations of collective momentum distribution [3]. Other successive studies establish the equilibrium scenario of bimodality, which would rather point towards a thermal phase transition [4]. This work focuses on the combined effect of entrance channel and exit channel on bimodality.

Abstract

International audience; Additive manufacturing processes are promising technologies, currently considered as new opportunities to optimize metallic components production routes, especially in aerospace, automotive, medical and energy industries. To assess the potentialities of additive manufacturing in nuclear industry, ODS (Oxide Dispersion Strengthened) Fe-14Cr steels are produced by selective laser melting (SLM). ODS steels are studied due to their improved resistance under neutron irradiation thanks to a fine dispersion of nanosized Y-Ti-O precipitates. Such materials are produced by a first step of mechanical alloying. The resulting powder has a non-spherical shape and is coarser than powders typically used in SLM equipment. The analyzes such as composition, density, particles size distribution, flowability and morphology are performed on this powder. The milled powder is then used to produce ODS steel parts as raw material or after some modifications such as sieving. The objective of this work is to study the impact of the powder characteristics on the final material properties. As expected, powder characteristics strongly influence the final density of solidified parts. The choice of the thickness layer is also an important parameter that has to be related with the particle size distribution of the powder.

Abstract

International audience; Understanding the behavior of nuclear materials, regarding fission gas release in relation to the different thermal loads to which they can be subjected, requires appropriated annealing tests in order to measure both the absolute level and the time dependence of the released fission products together with the corresponding fuel micro-structural changes during representative thermal transients. In this context, we describe in this paper the development and qualification of an experimental platform coupling heat treatment, gases release analysis and optical systems, for the study of fuel pellets at high temperature. This system, which is mainly devoted to power transient and LOCA (Loss Of Coolant Accident) type simulation, is based on an induction furnace to heat the pellet at high temperatures (up to 2000°C with up to 50°C/s temperature ramps) in controlled atmosphere. The device is coupled with dedicated analysis loops that are designed to identify and quantify on line the gases and fission products released during the annealing test. The purpose of the optical system is the real time monitoring of the sample surface to provide additional information (for instance on the micro structure evolution kinetics and fuel fragmentation). It is coupled with non-contact temperature measurements by thermal radiation analysis to monitor and control the fuel temperature. Based on experiments conducted on Uranium dioxide samples, we demonstrate the performance of the system in the range 20-2000°C with 10 $\mu$m resolution on a field of 1cm, with simultaneous temperature measurements obtained by multispectral pyrometry. We also discuss the limitations of the system as well as further developments for integration in a hot cell for application to irradiated fuels.

International audience; This study investigates rapid but limited crack propagation associated with a sudden decrease in load some-times observed during fracture toughness tests. This phenomenon is often referred to as “pop-in”. Tensile and compact tension specimens made of 6061 Al-alloy were machined from blocks which had been subjected to different isothermal ageing (4 or 8 or 12 or 16 h at 175 °C) heat treatments to obtain different mechanical properties and keep the same microstructure except the nanometric hardening precipitates. Ten-sile and fracture toughness tests have been performed. The observed mechanical behavior was correlated to metallurgical characterizations in two dimensions (scanning electron microscopy, EBSD, profilometer) and three dimensions (tomography, synchrotron laminography, atom-probe tomography). An influence of ageing time on both tensile and fracture toughness properties was revealed. Increasing the ageing time reinforced the yield and tensile strengths. For 4 and 8 hours of ageing time the material investi-gated did not show pop-in occurrence whereas pop-in is observed on 50% of specimens after 12 hours and on 100% after 16 hours. 3D scans were made via synchrotron laminography (ESRF, France) on flat specimens extracted from a CT specimen, containing a stopped crack. Reconstructions show very rough crack surface and the heterogeneous presence of large clusters of porosity at the crack tip. However, no difference between the differently heat treated materials and associated tearing moduli was found in terms of fracture mechanism. An innovative assembly has been designed in order to vary machine compliance during a toughness test. It is shown that the appearance of pop-in is related to the competition between crack growth toughness, i.e. tear-ing modulus and the double system stiffness (contributions of machine and specimen). An instability criteri-on has been investigated accounting for machine and sample stiffness and displacement considerations. It showed an excellent agreement with the experimentally found pop-ins.

Abstract

Laser cleaning study was performed on prepared samples using a nanosecond pulsed ytterbium fiber laser. To prepare samples, AISI 304L stainless steel samples were oxidized and implemented with non-radioactive contaminants in a controlled manner. In order to validate the cleaning process for metallic equipment polluted in nuclear installations, two types of contamination with europium (Eu) and with cobalt (Co) were studied. Eu was used as a simulator-product resulting from uranium fission, while Co — as an activation-product of nickel, which is a composing element of a primary coolant system of a reactor. The oxide layers have suffered laser scanning which was followed by the furnace treatment to obtain thicknesses in the range of 100 nm to 1 μm depending on the oxidation parameters [1] with a mean weight percentage of 1% of Eu and 1 % of Co in the volume of the oxide layer. Glow Discharge Optical Emission (GD-OES) and Mass Spectrometry (GD-MS) analyses have been performed to assess the efficiency of the cleaning treatment and to follow the distribution of residual contamination with a detection limit of 0.1mg/kg of Eu and Co. Decontamination rates up to 95.5 % were obtained. One of the identified reasons for this limitation is that the radionuclides are trapped in surface defects like micro cracks [2, 3]. Therefore, cleaning treatments have been applied on surface defects with controlled geometry and a micrometric aperture obtained by laser engraving and juxtaposition of polished sheets of AISI 304L stainless steel. The goal of this study is surface decontamination without either welding or inducing penetration of contamination into the cracks. GD-MS analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were performed to analyze the efficiency of the treatment and the diffusion of contaminants in this complex geometry.
