Abstract: International audience; Argumentative persuasive techniques in the advertising discourse of male and female cosmetics, in French and in English, are the focus of this study. This paper is the sequel to a previous study on the linguistic and non-linguistic strategies which intended to determine whether specific strategies are adopted depending on the language and the gender of cosmetics consumers. We analyzed a corpus composed of 342 cosmetics advertisements, focusing on the choice of themes and colors by advertisers. The conclusions of the study demonstrate that the themes as well as the colors – not only regarding the language used or the gender of consumers – play a part in the argumentative process. The study also corroborates the fact that the themes, as well as the colors, reinforce the gender stereotypes, but also play a key role in the persuasion of consumers. This is particularly relevant for male consumers for whom the choice of colors seems more persuasive than for female consumers.; Les techniques argumentatives de persuasion dans le discours publicitaire des cosmétiques pour hommes et pour femmes, en français et en anglais, sont abordées dans le cadre de cette étude. Ce travail poursuit la réflexion initiée lors d’une première étude des stratégies linguistiques et non linguistiques de persuasion, afin de déterminer si des stratégies spécifiques sont mises en œuvre selon la langue ou le genre du public visé. Un corpus de 342 publicités est analysé par le prisme du choix des thématiques, mais aussi des couleurs, effectué par les publicitaires. Les conclusions de l’étude montrent, aussi bien au niveau de la langue qu’au niveau du genre du public visé, que les thématiques abordées (jeunesse, vieillesse, masculinité, virilité, etc.) ainsi que les couleurs utilisées selon les genres ciblés jouent un rôle argumentatif. Cette étude a également montré que les thématiques, tout comme les couleurs, jouent un rôle à la fois dans le renforcement des stéréotypes liés au genre, mais aussi dans la persuasion des consommateurs et consommatrices. Ceci semble particulièrement vrai pour un public cible masculin pour lequel le choix des couleurs apparaît plus persuasif que pour un public féminin.

Abstract: The poor performances of typically developing children younger than 4 in the first-order false-belief task “Maxi and the chocolate” is analyzed from the perspective of conversational pragmatics. An ambiguous question asked by an adult experimenter (perceived as a teacher) can receive different interpretations based on a search for relevance, by which children according to their age attribute different intentions to the questioner, within the limits of their own meta-cognitive knowledge. The adult experimenter tells the child the following story of object-transfer: “Maxi puts his chocolate into the green cupboard before going out to play. In his absence, his mother moves the chocolate from the green cupboard to the blue one.” The child must then predict where Maxi will pick up the chocolate when he returns. To the child, the question from an adult (a knowledgeable person) may seem surprising and can be understood as a question of his own knowledge of the world, rather than on Maxi's mental representations. In our study, without any modification of the initial task, we disambiguate the context of the question by (1) replacing the adult experimenter with a humanoid robot presented as “ignorant” and “slow” but trying to learn and (2) placing the child in the role of a “mentor” (the knowledgeable person). Sixty-two typical children of 3 years-old completed the first-order false belief task “Maxi and the chocolate,” either with a human or with a robot. Results revealed a significantly higher success rate in the robot condition than in the human condition. Thus, young children seem to fail because of the pragmatic difficulty of the first-order task, which causes a difference of interpretation between the young child and the experimenter.

Abstract: International audience; Using the tools and methodology of corpus linguistics, this article studies how immigration, conceptualised as a “crisis” by the French far-right politician Marine Le Pen, is represented both lexically and semantically in her speeches. The metaphors of immigration will be analysed to show how the “immigration crisis” is metaphorically conceptualised as an “ecological crisis”, and to evaluate the axiological effects of such metaphors through the phenomenon known as “semantic prosody”.; En ayant recours aux outils de la linguistique de corpus, cet article étudie comment l’immigration, conceptualisée comme une « crise » par Marine Le Pen, est représentée lexicalement et sémantiquement dans ses discours. Seront analysées les métaphores de l’immigration, afin de montrer en quoi la « crise migratoire » emprunte l’isotopie sémantique d’une « crise écologique », et finalement d’évaluer les effets axiologiques de ces dernières par le biais du phénomène de « prosodie sémantique ».

Abstract: International audience; Vertical variations in physical and chemical conditions drive changes in marine zooplankton community composition. In turn, zooplankton communities play a critical role in regulating the transfer of organic matter produced in the surface ocean to deeper layers. Yet, the links between zooplankton community composition and the strength of vertical fluxes of particles remain elusive, especially on a global scale. Here, we provide a comprehensive analysis of variations in zooplankton community composition and vertical particle flux in the upper kilometer of the global ocean. Zooplankton samples were collected across five depth layers and vertical particle fluxes were assessed using continuous profiles of the Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP5) at 57 stations covering seven ocean basins. Zooplankton samples were analysed using a Zooscan and individual organisms were classified into 19 groups for the quantitative analyses. Zooplankton abundance, biomass and vertical particle flux decreased from the surface to 1000 m depth at all latitudes. The zooplankton abundance decrease rate was stronger at sites characterised by oxygen minima (2.kg−1) where most zooplankton groups showed a marked decline in abundance, except the jellyfishes, molluscs, annelids, large protists and a few copepod families. The attenuation rate of vertical particle fluxes was weaker at such oxygen-depleted sites. Canonical redundancy analyses showed that the epipelagic zooplankton community composition depended on the temperature, on the phytoplankton size distribution and the surface large particulate organic matter while oxygen was an additional important factor for structuring zooplankton in the mesopelagic. Our results further suggest that future changes in surface phytoplankton size and taxa composition and mesopelagic oxygen loss might lead to profound shift in zooplankton abundance and community structure in both the euphotic and mesopelagic ocean. These changes may affect the vertical export and hereby the strength of the biological carbon pump.

Abstract: International audience; Brexit as such existed linguistically before existing politically, as it has been the subject of various controversies and heated debates. From David Cameron, through Theresa May, to Boris Johnson, the conceptualization of Brexit certainly evolved. Thanks to corpus linguistics software tools together with cognitive linguistics and discourse analysis, this article seeks to study the perception of Brexit by Tories through an analysis of 45 speeches delivered by Tory Prime Ministers David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson. Following a quantitative approach, lexical frequencies as well as positive and negative keywords used by each Prime Minister are analysed and compared thanks to the use of linguistic tools, such as AntConc® and #LancsBox®. The paper concludes on a more qualitative approach by highlighting the semantic / notional domains the three Prime Ministers most frequently resort to, so as to show that Brexit is not constructed identically, at least linguistically-speaking, by the three Conservative Prime Ministers.

Abstract: Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of both acute and chronic infections in humans. The importance of the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) during S. aureus infection is currently largely unexplored. In the current study, we focused on one key PPP enzyme, transketolase (TKT). We showed that inactivation of the unique gene encoding TKT activity in S. aureus USA300 (∆tkt) led to drastic metabolomic changes. Using time-lapse video imaging and mice infection, we observed a major defect of the ∆tkt strain compared with wild-type strain in early intracellular proliferation and in the ability to colonize kidneys. Transcriptional activity of the 2 master regulators sigma B and RpiRc was drastically reduced in the ∆tkt mutant during host cells invasion. The concomitant increased RNAIII transcription suggests that TKT—or a functional PPP—strongly influences the ability of S. aureus to proliferate within host cells by modulating key transcriptional regulators.

Abstract: The Turing Test was initially suggested as a way to give an answer to the question “Can machines think Since then, it has been heavily criticized by philosophers and computer scientists both as irrelevant, or simply inefficient in order to evaluate a machine’s intelligence. But while arguments against it certainly highlight some of the test’s flaws, they also reveal the confusion that exists between thinking and intelligence. While we will not attempt here to define the concept of intelligence, we wm instead show that such a definition becomes irrelevant if the Turing Test is instead considered to be a test of the humanness of a conversational partner instead, an experimental paradigm that can be used in order to investigate human inferences and expectations. We will review studies which use the Turing Test this way, not only in computer sciences where it is commonly used to evaluate the humanness of a chatbot but also its uses in the field of psychology where it can be used to understand human reasoning in conversation either with a chatbot or with another human.

Abstract: The flow of energy in the wind‐driven circulation is examined in a combined theoretical and numerical study. Based on a multiple‐scale analysis, we find the mesoscale field in the ocean interior is strongly affected by, but does not feed back onto, the ventilated thermocline. In the western boundary region, the associated currents first appear as coastal jets, conserving mean energy, and later as separated jet extensions where the mesoscale is energized by the mean field. It is in the separated jet zone where the primary loss of general circulation energy to the mesoscale occurs. These ideas are tested by an analysis of a regional 1/12° primitive equation numerical model of the North Atlantic. The predictions of the theory are generally supported by the numerical results. The one exception is that topographic irregularities in the coastal jet spawn eddies, although these eddies contribute modestly to the energy budget. We therefore conclude the primary sink of wind input into the mean circulation is in the separated jet, and not the interior. The analysis also shows wind energy input to be much smaller than the interior energy fluxes; thus, the general circulation largely recirculates energy.

Abstract: International audience; From David Cameron, through Theresa May, to Boris Johnson, what Brexit means has evolved, linguistically speaking, but also conceptually speaking. It is mostly through discourse that this quite unfathomable concept came into being and slowly became a more stable notion in the British and European contexts. Thanks to corpus linguistics software tools together with cognitive linguistics and discourse analysis, this article seeks to follow the findings of a previous study on the perception of Brexit by Tories through an analysis of 92 speeches delivered by Tory Prime Ministers David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson. Following a quantitative and qualitative approach, the paper aims to analyze the Brexit is a journey metaphor scenario, and more particularly the direction of the movement and the evaluation of the metaphor scenarios resorted to by the three Conservative Prime Ministers.

Abstract: International audience; Long-term evolution of microphytoplankton communities remains poorly studied in anthropized coastal zones submitted to multiple stressors. Here, we investigate decadal (2005-2017) microphytoplankton community changes, focusing on abundance and biovolume of major taxa related to both local abiotic conditions (rainfall rate, temperature and salinity) and regional convection events (wintering deep mixing) in the highly urbanized and semi-enclosed Toulon Bay (NW Mediterranean Sea). Results showed that persistent variations in local rainfall regime were followed by major changes in microphytoplankton community composition. Wet period (P ⁠ 2) (increase of wintering precipitations observed between late 2008 and early 2015) was associated to an increase of large heterotrophic dinoflagellates and disappearance of dominant diatom taxa, while dry periods (2005-2008 (P ⁠ 1) and 2015-2017 (P ⁠ 3)) promoted diatoms, microflagellates and small mixotrophic/heterotrophic dinoflagel-lates including potentially toxic species. Concomitance between intense deep mixing events, reported in open Ligurian Basin (particularly during winters 2005 and 2006) and higher values in the total microphytoplankton abundance and in spring diatom abundance regardless of rainfall conditions, presents this meso-scale process as the main fertilization mechanism in Toulon Bay. Although no change was detected in the chlorophyll a concentration during the 2006-2017 period, its trend was negatively correlated to the total microphytoplankton abundance. This negative relation as well as a change of size in dinoflagellates suggested a shift in the primary producer nature, from large autotrophic cells (diatoms and microflagellates) to smaller ones, driven by a runoff intensification. Finally, different communities composition were observed during both dry periods (i.e. diatoms-dominated and autotrophic microflagellate-dominated communities during P ⁠ 1 and P ⁠ 3 , respectively), suggesting another environmental driver of change for phytoplankton communities of this coastal ecosystem.

Abstract: International audience; Significance and Impact of the Study: This study reports relevant information about antibiofilm activity of original derivatives of hemibastadin alkaloids. The most active compound was shown to act as a specific anti-biofilm inhibitor without affecting viability of the targeted bacteria no more than those of the global bacterial community of a seawater sample. Taken together, these findings indicate the potentiality of such compounds to be used as original nonbiocidal molecules for designing eco-friendly antifouling solutions. Abstract The antibiofilm activity of three hemibastadins analogues was evaluated against different marine bacterial strains through mono-species biofilms and through a multi-species model of biofilm. Results showed that compound 3 exhibited interesting antibiofilm efficiencies effective concentrations (EC 50) in the range of 30-100 lmol l À1 without acute toxicity against bacteria. Toxicity against nontargeted organisms was also considered showing that the compound did not affect the global bacterial community at a concentration of 75-100 lmol l À1. These results provided baseline data concerning the toxicity of antibiofilm biocides against marine organisms.

Abstract: 29 pages, 9 figures, supporting information https://doi.org/10.1029/2018GB006022, Predicting responses of plankton to variations in essential nutrients is hampered by limited in situ measurements, a poor understanding of community composition, and the lack of reference gene catalogs for key taxa. Iron is a key driver of plankton dynamics and, therefore, of global biogeochemical cycles and climate. To assess the impact of iron availability on plankton communities, we explored the comprehensive bio‐oceanographic and bio‐omics data sets from Tara Oceans in the context of the iron products from two state‐of‐the‐art global scale biogeochemical models. We obtained novel information about adaptation and acclimation toward iron in a range of phytoplankton, including picocyanobacteria and diatoms, and identified whole subcommunities covarying with iron. Many of the observed global patterns were recapitulated in the Marquesas archipelago, where frequent plankton blooms are believed to be caused by natural iron fertilization, although they are not captured in large‐scale biogeochemical models. Abstract: Coastal zones have large social, economic and environmental values. They are more densely populated than the hinterland and concentrate large economic assets, critical infrastructures and human activities such as tourism, fisheries, navigation. Furthermore, coastal oceans are home to a wealth of living marine resources and very productive ecosystems. Yet, coastal zones are exposed to various natural and anthropogenic hazards. To reduce the risks associated with marine hazards, sustained coastal zone monitoring programs, forecasting and early warning systems are increasingly needed. Earth observations (EO), and in particular satellite remote sensing, provide invaluable information: satellite-borne sensors allow an effective monitoring of the quasi-global ocean, with synoptic views of large areas, good spatial and temporal resolution, and sustained time-series covering several years to decades. However, satellite observations do not always meet the precision required by users, in particular in dynamic coastal zones, characterized by shorter-scale variability. A variety of sensors are used to directly monitor the coastal zone and their observations can also be integrated into numerical models to provide a full 4D monitoring of the ocean and forecasts. Here, we review how EO, and more particularly satellite observations, can monitor coastal hazards and their drivers. These include coastal flooding, shoreline changes, maritime security, marine pollution, water quality, and marine ecology shifts on the one hand, and several physical characteristics (bathymetry, topography, vertical land motion) of coastal zones, meteorological and oceanic (metocean) variables that can act as forcing factors for coastal hazards on the other hand.

Abstract: An efficient purification of recombinant proteins often requires a high ratio of recombinant to host proteins. In plants, Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) is the most abundant leaf protein, thus strongly impacting purification yield. Here, we describe a simple and robust purification procedure for recombinant proteins based on a differential precipitation of RuBisCO. In this context, four Legume lectin domains of Arabidopsis thaliana which belong to receptor-like kinases and cell wall proteins were produced from Nicotiana benthamiana leaves. The recombinant proteins exhibit a unique lectin domain consisting of around 250 amino acid residues with several predicted N-glycosylation sites and a six His-tag at the N-terminus. After ammonium sulphate precipitation of total soluble proteins, depletion of RuBisCO was obtained using citrate and succinate buffers during the salting-in step: this depletion was pH-dependent and the presence of di- or tri-carboxylic acids was required. The depleted protein extracts were then subjected to two chromatographic steps which were used in the negative mode to submit a protein fraction enriched as much as possible in recombinant lectin domains to a third chromatographic step (immobilized metal-ion chromatography). Three of the Legume lectin domains were purified near to homogeneity and revealed multiple N-glycosylation isoforms, particularly those from receptor-like kinases, which were characterised using specific lectins and deglycosylation enzymes. The production and purification of recombinant lectin domains will facilitate their biochemical characterisation in the context of cell-to-cell signalling and cell wall organisation.

Abstract: Germanium is a very good candidate to host a versatile spintronics platform thanks to its unique spin and optical properties. Recently we focused on two approaches in order to tune the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in this Ge-based platform. The first one relies on growing high quality epitaxial topological insulators (TIs) on a Ge (111) substrate, we developed an original method to probe the spin-to-charge conversion at the TI/Ge(111) interface by taking advantage of the Ge optical properties. The latter approach is to exploit the intrinsic SOI of Ge (111). By investigating the electrical properties of a thin Ge(111), we found a large unidirectional Rashba magnetoresistance, which we ascribe to the interplay between the externally applied magnetic field and the current-induced pseudo-magnetic field applied in the spin-splitted subsurface states of Ge (111). Both studies open a door towards spin manipulation with electric fields in an all-semiconductor technology platform.

Abstract: High-throughput data generated by new biotechnologies require specific and adapted statistical treatment in order to be efficiently used in biological studies. In this article, we propose a powerful framework to manage and analyse multi-omics heterogeneous data to carry out an integrative analysis. We have illustrated this using the mixOmics package for R software as it specifically addresses data integration issues. Our work also aims at applying the most recent functionalities of mixOmics to real datasets. Although multi-block integrative methodologies exist, we hope to encourage a more widespread use of such approaches in an operational framework by biologists. We have used natural populations of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana in this work, but the framework proposed is not limited to this plant and can be deployed whatever the organisms of interest and the biological question may be. Four omics datasets (phenomics, metabolomics, cell wall proteomics and transcriptomics) were collected, analysed and integrated to study the cell wall plasticity of plants exposed to sub-optimal temperature growth conditions. The methodologies presented here start from basic univariate statistics leading to multi-block integration analysis. We have also highlighted the fact that each method, either unsupervised or supervised, is associated with one biological issue. Using this powerful framework enabled us to arrive at novel conclusions on the biological system, which would not have been possible using standard statistical approaches.

Abstract: Acclimation allowed by variation in gene or allele expression in natural populations is increasingly understood as a decisive mechanism, as much as adaptation, for species evolution. However, for small eukaryotic organisms, as species from zooplankton, classical methods face numerous challenges. Here, we propose the concept of allelic differential expression at the population‐scale (psADE) to investigate the variation in allele expression in natural populations. We developed a novel approach to detect psADE based on metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data from environmental samples. This approach was applied on the widespread marine copepod, Oithona similis, by combining samples collected during the Tara Oceans expedition (2009–2013) and de novo transcriptome assemblies. Abstract: International audience; Manipulation implies a conscious choice from speakers to trigger a change of opinion in the interlocutors and to make them accept their own point of view, i.e. their own vision of the world. As pointed out by Goatly [2007], Charteris-Black [2005, 2014] or Van Dijk [1998], metaphors can be used as manipulative tools. Metaphors have traditionally been considered as figures of speech used by rhetoricians to convince crowds; cognitivists have demonstrated that they are figures of thought as well, which partly accounts for their manipulative potential. The three underlying reasons to this are, among others, the highlighting-hiding process, the existence of asymmetrical metaphors, and the multivalency of metaphors. The manipulative potential of metaphors is examined in twelve speeches from pro-life supporters, ranging from 2006 to 2019. One of the main ideological debates going on in the US has been on abortion, as the pro-life movement has grown stronger in recent years and has been threatening the right to abortion guaranteed by Roe v. Wade. The study of the metaphors in those speeches has enabled us to highlight how pro-lifers manipulate people regarding the apprehension of reality by systematically using a limited number of conceptualizations.; Le concept de manipulation implique qu’il y a un choix conscient des locuteurs qui permet de déclencher un changement d'opinion chez les interlocuteurs et de leur faire accepter leur propre point de vue, c'est-à-dire leur propre vision du monde. Comme le soulignent Goatly [2007], Charteris-Black [2005, 2014] ou Van Dijk [1998], les métaphores peuvent être utilisées comme des outils de manipulation. Les métaphores sont traditionnellement considérées comme des figures de style utilisées par les rhétoriciens pour convaincre les foules ; les cognitivistes ont démontré qu'elles sont également des figures de pensée, ce qui explique en partie leur potentiel manipulatoire. Les trois raisons sous-jacentes à cela sont, entre autres, le processus de highlighting-hiding, l'existence de métaphores asymétriques et la multivalence des métaphores. Le potentiel manipulatoire des métaphores est étudié dans douze discours de pro-lifers, ou militants anti-avortement, de 2006 à 2019. L'un des principaux débats idéologiques contemporains aux États-Unis porte sur l'avortement, dans la mesure où le mouvement pro-life s’est renforcé ces dernières années et où il menace le droit à l'avortement garanti par l'arrêt de la Cour Suprême Roe v. Abstract: The purification of plant cell walls is challenging because they constitute an open compartment which is not limited by a membrane like the cell organelles. Different strategies have been established to limit the contamination by proteins of other compartments in cell wall proteomics studies. Non-destructive methods rely on washing intact cells with various types of solutions without disrupting the plasma membrane in order to elute cell wall proteins. In contrast, destructive protocols involve the purification of cell walls prior to the extraction of proteins with salt solutions. In both cases, proteins known to be intracellular have been identified by mass spectrometry in cell wall proteomes. The aim of this chapter is to provide tools to assess the subcellular localization of the proteins identified in cell wall proteomics studies, including: (1) bioinformatic predictions, (2) immunocytolocalization of proteins of interest on tissue sections and (3) in muro observation of proteins of interest fused to reporter fluorescent proteins by confocal microscopy. Finally, a qualitative assessment of the work can be performed and the strategy used to prepare the samples can be optimized if necessary.

Abstract: Mechanisms driving the North Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) variability at low-frequency are of central interest for accurate climate predictions. However, the origin of this variability remains under debate, complicating for instance the interpretation of the observed time series provided by the RAPID-MOCHA-WBTS program. In this study, we aim at disentangling the respective contribution of the local atmospheric forcing, the signal of remote origin and the ocean intrinsic dynamics for the subtropical low-frequency AMOC variability. We analyse for this a set of four ensembles of a regional (20oS - 55oN), eddy-resolving (1/12o) North Atlantic oceanic configuration, where surface forcing and open boundary conditions are alternatively permuted from fully varying (realistic) to yearly repeating signals.The analysis of the four ensemble mean AMOCs reveals predominance of local, atmospherically forced signal at interannual time scales (2-10 years), while signals imposed by the boundaries imprint at decadal (10-30 years) time scales. Due to this marked time scale separation, we show that most of the subtropical AMOC forced variability can be understood as a linear superposition of these two signals. Analyzing the ensemble spread of the four ensembles, we then show that the subtropical AMOC is also characterized by an intrinsic variability, which organizes as a basin scale mode peaking at interannual time scales. This basin scale mode is found to be weakly sensitive to the surrounding forced signals, suggesting no causal relationship between the two. Its spatio-temporal pattern shares however similarities with the atmospherically forced signal, which is likely to make the attribution from a single eddy-resolving simulation, or from observations, more difficult.

Abstract: Disequilibrium between the taxonomic and thematic semantic systems was previously hypothesized in participants with semantic dementia (SD), without rigorously assessing their ability to identify the two types of semantic relationships. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to directly compare the ability of 10 participants with SD, 10 participants with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and 20 controls to identify thematic versus taxonomic relationships. : Participants performed an explicit forced-choice picture-matching task in which they had to determine which of two pictures of choice was semantically related to the target picture. Target pictures could display natural or artifact objects. Each target was presented once with a taxonomically related picture and once with a thematically related picture. : Analyses of correct thematic and taxonomic matches as a function of target domain showed that the performance of the two groups of patients differed in the taxonomic conditions but not in the thematic conditions, demonstrating a relative preservation of thematic knowledge in SD. Additional correlation analyses further indicated that the particular status of thematic relationships in SD was even stronger for artifact concepts. : Results provide evidence of the heterogeneous nature of semantic knowledge disruption in SD, and could be regarded as being consistent with the existence of two neuroanatomically and functionally distinct semantic systems. Results further stress the relevance of performing a more detailed and complete assessment of semantic performance in participants with SD, in order to capture the impaired but also preserved aspects of their knowledge.

Abstract: We present a mechanical analog of a quantum wave-particle duality: a vibrating string threaded through a freely moving bead or `masslet'. For small string amplitudes, the particle movement is governed by a set of non-linear dynamical equations that couple the wave field to the masslet dynamics. Under specific conditions, the particle achieves a regime of {\it transparency} in which the field and the particle's dynamics appear decoupled. In that special case, the particle conserves its momentum and a guiding wave obeying a Klein-Gordon equation, with real or imaginary mass, emerges. Similar to the double-solution theory of de Broglie, this guiding wave is locked in phase with a modulating group-wave co-moving with the particle. Abstract: University students often engage in multimedia (e.g., texting or social networks) and nonmultimedia (e.g., chatting with neighbors) off-task multitasking behaviors during courses. The aim of the present study was to describe these off-task multitasking behaviors and analyze their effects on learning performance in a real teaching session. More specifically, 187 students attended a cognitive psychology tutorial as usual, taking notes either on paper or on a laptop. In an effort to preserve the ecological setting, they were not informed of our research on multitasking. After 20 min, students had to report the number and duration of off-task multitasking behaviors they had engaged in and complete a learning questionnaire. Results showed that multimedia and nonmultimedia multitasking behaviors were frequent but also additive, especially among students who used a laptop. These behaviors had a negative impact on students’ memorization of course content, although we found no significant effects on comprehension. Our study also showed that students who used a laptop had lower memory scores. A mediation analysis confirmed that this deleterious effect was partly attributable to multitasking. These results are discussed in terms of interference between off-task behaviors and the cognitive processes essential for learning.
