This paper aims to analyse the relationship between the Russian state and the Russian Orthodox Church before the Communist revolution of 1917 and during the existence of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (1917-1991). The main focus is concentrated on the different stages and forms of persecution on the Russian Orthodox Church by the communist authorities, though they proclaimed the freedom of conscience and religious worship. Also, we analyse the different ways in which the communist regime tried to use the Orthodox Church in its international policy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents an examination of Romania's decision to not become involved with the Soviet Union-led military intervention in Czechoslovakia in August 1968. The article argues that during the period of 1964 to 1968 the Romanian communist government undertook a variety of actions that were largely reflective of the attitudes held by Romanian society. Additionally, the article shows that in 1968 the country began a nation-building project aimed at establishing the county as an ethnically homogeneous socialist nation.
