We measure and analyze the effective spin Hall angle of platinum in the low residual resistivity regime by second harmonic measurements of the spin-orbit torques for a multilayer of Pt/Co/AlO$_x$. An angular dependent study of the torques allows us to extract the effective spin Hall angle responsible for the damping-like torque in the system. We observe a strikingly non-monotonic and reproducible temperature dependence of the torques. This behavior is compatible with recent theoretical predictions which include both intrinsic and extrinsic (impurities and phonons) contributions to the spin Hall effect at finite temperature.

In this note we summarize our recent results for the temperature dependence of transport coefficients of metallic films in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Our focus is on (i) the spin Nernst and the thermal Edelstein effects, and (ii) the phonon skew scattering contribution to the spin Hall conductivity, which is relevant for the temperature dependence of the spin Hall angle. A normal metallic film sandwiched between two insulators may have strong spin-orbit coupling near the metal-insulator interfaces, even if spin-orbit coupling is negligible in the bulk of the film. In this paper we study two technologically important and deeply interconnected effects that arise from interfacial spin-orbit coupling in metallic films. The first is the spin Hall effect, whereby a charge current in the plane of the film is partially converted into an orthogonal spin current in the same plane. The second is the Edelstein effect, in which a charge current produces an in-plane, transverse spin polarization. At variance with strictly two-dimensional Rashba systems, we find that the spin Hall conductivity has a finite value even if spin-orbit interaction with impurities is neglected and "vertex corrections" are properly taken into account. Even more remarkably, such finite value becomes "universal" in a certain configuration. This is a direct consequence of the spatial dependence of spin-orbit coupling on the third dimension, perpendicular to the film plane. The non-vanishing spin Hall conductivity has a profound influence on the Edelstein effect, which we show to consist of two terms, the first with the standard form valid in a strictly two-dimensional Rashba system, and a second arising from the presence of the third dimension. Whereas the standard term is proportional to the momentum relaxation time, the new one scales with the spin relaxation time. Our results, although derived in a specific model, should be valid rather generally, whenever a spatially dependent Rashba spin-orbit coupling is present and the electron motion is not strictly two-dimensional., Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures

It is now well established that the peculiar linear-in-momentum dependence of the Rashba (and of the Dresselhaus) spin-orbit coupling leads to the vanishing of the spin Hall conductivity in the bulk of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). In this paper we discuss how generic magnetic couplings change this behaviour providing then a potential handle on the spin Hall effect. In particular we examine the influence of magnetic impurities and an in-plane magnetic field. We find that in both cases there is a finite spin Hall effect and we provide explicit expressions for the spin Hall conductivity. The results can be obtained by means of the quasiclassical Green function approach, that we have recently extended to spin-orbit coupled electron systems.

In an insulator-metal-insulator junction, inversion-symmetry breaking at the interfaces between the 3D metallic lm and the top and bottom insulating layers may give rise to a sizeable (Rashba-like) spin-orbit interaction. In this paper we study the spin Hall and Edelstein e ects produced by such an interface interaction through a quasiclassical approach. We nd that the spin Hall conductivity has a nite value even if spin-orbit interaction with impurities in the bulk of the metallic lm is neglected and disorder is properly taken into account. This is in sharp contrast with the case of a strictly 2D metallic layer, in which case impurity scattering is known to completely suppress Rashba-like contributions to the spin Hall conductivity. The non-vanishing of the latter has a profound in uence on the Edelstein e ect, which we show to consist of two terms, the rst with the standard form valid in an exactly 2D system, and a second arising from the presence of the third dimension.

Spin-orbit interaction is usefully classified as extrinsic or intrinsic depending on its origin: the potential due to random impurities (extrinsic), or the crystalline potential associated with the band or device structure (intrinsic). In this paper we will show how by using a SU(2) formulation the two sources of spin-orbit interaction may be described in an elegant and unified way. As a result we obtain a simple description of the interplay of the two types of spin-orbit interaction, and a physically transparent explanation of the vanishing of the d.c. spin Hall conductivity in a Rashba two-dimensional electron gas when spin relaxation is neglected, and its reinstatement when spin relaxation is allowed. Furthermore, we obtain an explicit formula for the transverse spin polarization created by an electric current, which generalizes the standard formula obtained by Edelstein and Aronov and Lyanda-Geller by including extrinsic spin-orbit interaction and spin relaxation., 9 pages

Theory predicts for the two-dimensional electrons gas with only Rashba spin-orbit interaction a vanishing spin Hall conductivity and at the same time a finite inverse spin Hall effect. We show how these seemingly contradictory results are compatible with the Onsager relations: the latter do hold for spin and particle (charge) currents in the two-dimensional electron gas, although (i) their form depends on the experimental setup and (ii) a vanishing bulk spin Hall conductivity does not necessarily imply a vanishing spin Hall effect. We also discuss the situation in which extrinsic spin orbit from impurities is present and the bulk spin Hall conductivity can be different from zero., Comment: Accepted version

We study the connection between the spin-heat and spin-charge response in a disordered Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling. It is shown that the ratio between the above responses can be expressed as the thermopower $S=-(\pi k_B)^2T\sigma'/3e\sigma$ times a number $R_s$ which depends on the strength and type of the spin-orbit couplings considered. The general results are illustrated by examining different two-dimensional electron or hole systems with different and competing spin-orbit mechanisms, and we conclude that a metallic system could prove much more efficient as a heat-to-spin than as a heat-to-charge converter., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

We derive a kinetic equation for the electrons moving on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. Due to the helical nature of the excitations backward scattering is suppressed in the collision integral, and the spin dynamics is entirely constrained by that of the charge. We further analyze the tunneling between the helical and a conventional metal or ferromagnet. We find that the tunnel resistance strongly depends on the angle between the magnetization in the ferromagnet and the current in the helical metal. A nonmagnetic layer on top of the helical metal amplifies the current-induced spin polarization., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

We study the coupled dynamics of spin and charge currents in a two-dimensional electron gas in the transport diffusive regime. For systems with inversion symmetry there are established relations between the spin Hall effect, the anomalous Hall effect and the inverse spin Hall effect. However, in two-dimensional electron gases of semiconductors like GaAs, inversion symmetry is broken so that the standard arguments do not apply. We demonstrate that in the presence of a Rashba type of spin-orbit coupling (broken structural inversion symmetry) the anomalous Hall effect, the spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effect are substantially different effects. Furthermore we discuss the inverse spin Hall effect for a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling; our results agree with a recent experiment., 5 pages

We consider a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling, and study the effects of magnetic s-wave impurities and long-range non-magnetic disorder on the spin-charge dynamics of the system. We focus on voltage induced spin polarizations and their relation to spin Hall currents. We study the spin-charge coupled transport in a two-dimensional electron system using the method of quasiclassical ($\xi$-integrated) Green's functions. In particular we derive the Eilenberger equation in the presence of a generic spin-orbit field. The method allows us to study spin and charge transport from ballistic to diffusive regimes and continuity equations for spin and charge are automatically incorporated. In the clean limit we establish the connection between the spin-Hall conductivity and the Berry phase in momentum space. For finite systems we solve the Eilenberger equation numerically for the special case of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and a two-terminal geometry. In particular, we calculate explicitly the spin-Hall induced spin polarization in the corners, predicted by Mishchenko et al. [13]. Furthermore we find universal spin currents in the short-time dynamics after switching on the voltage across the sample, and calculate the corresponding spin-Hall polarization at the edges. How does an initially homogeneous spin-polarization in a confined two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling evolve in time? How does the relaxation time depend on system size? We study these questions for systems of a size that is much larger than the Fermi wavelength, but comparable and even shorter than the spin relaxation length.
