Superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates holds exciting analogies with that of cuprates, with similar structures and $3d$-electron count. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) we studied electronic and magnetic excitations and charge density correlations in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_2$ thin films with and without an SrTiO$_3$ capping layer. We observe dispersing magnons only in the capped samples, progressively dampened at higher doping. In addition, we detect an elastic resonant scattering peak in the uncapped $x=0$ compound at wave vector (1/3,0), remindful of the charge order signal in hole doped cuprates. The peak weakens at $x=0.05$ and disappears in the superconducting $x=0.20$ film. The uncapped samples also present a higher degree of Ni$3d$-Nd$5d$ hybridization and a smaller anisotropy of the Ni$3d$ occupation with respect to the capped samples. The role of the capping on the possible hydrogen incorporation or on other mechanisms responsible for the electronic reconstruction far from the interface remains to be understood.

We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to investigate charge-stripe correlations in La1.675Eu0.2Sr0.125CuO4. By differentiating elastic from inelastic scattering, it is demonstrated that charge-stripe correlations precede both the structural lowerature tetragonal phase and the transport-defined pseudogap onset. The scattering peak amplitude from charge stripes decays approximately as T-2 towards our detection limit. The in-plane integrated intensity, however, remains roughly temperature independent. Therefore, although the incommensurability shows a remarkably large increase at high temperature, our results are interpreted via a single scattering constituent. In fact, direct comparison to other stripe-ordered compounds (La1.875Ba0.125CuO4, La1.475Nd0.4Sr0.125CuO4, and La1.875Sr0.125CuO4) suggests a roughly constant integrated scattering intensity across all these compounds. Our results therefore provide a unifying picture for the charge-stripe ordering in La-based cuprates. As charge correlations in La1.675Eu0.2Sr0.125CuO4 extend beyond the lowerature tetragonal and pseudogap phase, their emergence heralds a spontaneous symmetry breaking in this compound.

We report high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements of the collective spin fluctuations in three compositions of the superconducting cuprate system La2-xSrxCuO4. We have mapped out the excitations throughout much of the two-dimensional (h,k) Brillouin zone. The spin fluctuations in La2-xSrxCuO4 are found to be fairly well described by a damped harmonic oscillator model, thus our data allows us to determine the full wave vector dependence of the damping parameter. This parameter increases with doping and is largest along the (h,h) line, where it is peaked near (0.2,0.2). We have used a new procedure to determine the absolute wave vector dependent susceptibility for the doped compositions La2-xSrxCuO4(x=0.12,0.16) by normalizing our data to La2CuO4 measurements made with inelastic neutron scattering (INS). We find that the evolution with doping of the intensity of high-energy excitations measured by RIXS and INS is consistent. For the doped compositions, the wave vector dependent susceptibility is much larger at (14,14) than at (12,0). It increases rapidly along the (h,h) line towards the antiferromagnetic wave vector of the parent compound (12,12). Thus, the strongest magnetic excitations, and those predicted to favor superconductive pairing, occur towards the (12,12) position as observed by INS.

Here we have overcome this limitation by measuring the complete polarization dependence of the RIXS spectra as function of momentum transfer and doping in thin films of NdBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-\delta}$. Besides confirming the previous assignment of $dd$ and spin excitations (magnon, bimagnon) in the antiferromagnetic insulating parent compound, we unequivocally single out the actual spin-flip contribution at all dopings. We also demonstrate that the softening of $dd$ excitations is mainly attributed to the shift of the $xy$ peak to lower energy loss. These results provide a definitive assessment of the RIXS spectra of cuprates and demonstrate that RIXS measurements with full polarization control are practically feasible and highly informative., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

We report an Fe $L$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of the unusual superconductor $\beta$-FeSe. The high energy resolution of this RIXS experiment ($\approx\,$55$\,$meV FWHM) made it possible to resolve low-energy excitations of the Fe $3d$ manifold. These include a broad peak which shows dispersive trends between 100-200$\,$meV along the $(\pi,0)$ and $(\pi,\pi)$ directions of the one-Fe square reciprocal lattice, and which can be attributed to paramagnon excitations. The multi-band valence state of FeSe is among the most metallic in which such excitations have been discerned by soft x-ray RIXS.

We compare the experimental results to numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) calculations that provide the spin dynamical structure factor $S(\textbf{Q},\omega)$ of the three-band Hubbard model. The theory reproduces well the momentum and doping dependence of the dispersions and spectral weights of magnetic excitations. These results provide compelling evidence that paramagnons, although increasingly damped, persist across the superconducting dome of the cuprate phase diagram; this implies that long range antiferromagnetic correlations are quickly washed away, while short range magnetic interactions are little affected by doping., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

The magnetic properties of rare earth compounds are usually well captured by assuming a fully localized f shell and only considering the Hund's rule ground state multiplet split by a crystal electric field (CEF). Currently, the standard technique for probing CEF excitations in lanthanides is inelastic neutron scattering. Here we show that with the recent leap in energy resolution, resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering (RIXS) has become an attractive alternative for looking at CEF excitations. This has been used for studying the CEF scheme in CeRh2Si2, a system that has been investigated intensely for more than two decades now but for which no consensus has been reached yet as to its CEF scheme. Using high energy resolution of about 30 meV as well as polarization analysis in the scattered beam, both features that have become available only very recently in RIXS, allowed us to find a unique CEF description for CeRh2Si2. The result agrees well with previous inelastic neutron scattering and magnetic susceptibility studies. Due to its strong resonant character, RIXS is applicable to very small samples, presents very high cross sections for all lanthanides, and further benefits from the very weak coupling to phonon excitations. Charge order has now been observed in several cuprate high-temperature superconductors. We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiment on the electron-doped cuprate Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$ that demonstrates the existence of dynamic correlations at the charge order wave vector. Upon cooling we observe a softening in the electronic response, which has been predicted to occur for a d-wave charge order in electron-doped cuprates. At low temperatures, the energy range of these excitations coincides with that of the dispersive magnetic modes known as paramagnons. Furthermore, measurements where the polarization of the scattered photon is resolved indicate that the dynamic response at the charge order wave vector primarily involves spin-flip excitations. Overall, our findings indicate a coupling between dynamic magnetic and charge-order correlations in the cuprates., Comment: Supplementary information available upon request

Charge modulations are considered as a leading competitor of high-temperature superconductivity in the underdoped cuprates, and their relationship to Fermi surface reconstructions and to the pseudogap state is an important subject of current research. Overdoped cuprates, on the other hand, are widely regarded as conventional Fermi liquids without collective electronic order. For the overdoped (Bi,Pb)2.12Sr1.88CuO6+�� (Bi2201) high-temperature superconductor, here we report resonant x-ray scattering measurements revealing incommensurate charge order reflections, with correlation lengths of 40-60 lattice units, that persist up to at least 250K. Charge order is markedly more robust in the overdoped than underdoped regime but the incommensurate wave vectors follow a common trend; moreover it coexists with a single, unreconstructed Fermi surface, without pseudogap or nesting features, as determined from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. This re-entrant charge order is reproduced by model calculations that consider a strong van Hove singularity within a Fermi liquid framework., 11 pages, 5 figures

Although all superconducting cuprates display charge-ordering tendencies, their low-temperature properties are distinct, impeding efforts to understand the phenomena within a single conceptual framework. While some systems exhibit stripes of charge and spin, with a locked periodicity, others host charge density waves (CDWs) without any obviously related spin order. Here we use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to follow the evolution of charge correlations in the canonical stripe-ordered cuprate La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 across its ordering transition. We find that high-temperature charge correlations are unlocked from the wavevector of the spin correlations, signaling analogies to CDW phases in various other cuprates. This indicates that stripe order at low temperatures is stabilized by the coupling of otherwise independent charge and spin density waves, with important implications for the relation between charge and spin correlations in the cuprates.

Magnetic doping of topological insulators (TIs) is crucial for unlocking novel quantum phenomena, paving the way for spintronics applications. Recently, we have shown that doping with rare earth ions introduces large magnetic moments and allows for high doping concentrations without the loss of crystal quality, however no long range magnetic order was observed. In Dy-doped Bi2Te3 we found a band gap opening above a critical doping concentration, despite the paramagnetic bulk behavior. Here, we present a surface-sensitive x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) study of an in situ cleaved film in the cleanest possible environment. The Dy M4,5 absorption spectra measured with circularly polarized x-rays are fitted using multiplet calculations to obtain the effective magnetic moment. Arrott–Noakes plots, measured by the Dy M5 XMCD as a function of field at low temperatures, give a negative transition temperature. The evaporation of a ferromagnetic Co thin film did not introduce ferromagnetic ordering of the Dy dopants either; instead a lowering of the transition temperature was observed, pointing towards an antiferromagnetic ordering scenario. This result shows that there is a competition between the magnetic exchange interaction and the Zeeman interaction. The latter favors the Co and Dy magnetic moments to be both aligned along the direction of the applied magnetic field, while the exchange interaction is minimized if the Dy and Co atoms are antiferromagnetically coupled, as in zero applied field.

Charge order in underdoped and optimally doped high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconductors Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+��}$ (Bi2201) is investigated by Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We have directly observed charge density modulation in the optimally doped Bi2201 at momentum transfer $Q_{\|} \simeq 0.23$ rlu, with smaller intensity and correlation length with respect to the underdoped sample. This demonstrates that short-range charge order in Bi2201 persists up to optimal doping, as in other hole-doped cuprates. We explored the nodal (diagonal) direction and found no charge order peak, confirming that charge order modulates only along the Cu-O bond directions. We measured the out-of-plane dependence of charge order, finding a flat response and no maxima at half integer \emph{L} values. This suggests there is no out-of-plane phase correlation in single layer Bi2201, at variance from YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ and La$_{2-x}$(Ba,Sr)$_x$CuO$_4$. Combining our results with data from the literature we assess that charge order in Bi2201 exists in a large doping range across the phase diagram, i.e. $0.07 \lesssim p \lesssim 0.16$, demonstrating thereby that it is intimately entangled with the antiferromagnetic background, the pseudogap and superconductivity., 9 pages, 7 figures

The Kondo model predicts that both the valence at low temperatures and its temperature dependence scale with the characteristic energy TK of the Kondo interaction. Here, we study the evolution of the 4f occupancy with temperature in a series of Yb Kondo lattices using resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy. In agreement with simple theoretical models, we observe a scaling between the valence at low temperature and TK obtained from thermodynamic measurements. In contrast, the temperature scale Tv at which the valence increases with temperature is almost the same in all investigated materials while the Kondo temperatures differ by almost four orders of magnitude. This observation is in remarkable contradiction to both naive expectation and precise theoretical predictions of the Kondo model, asking for further theoretical work in order to explain our findings. We have performed neutron inelastic scattering and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu-$L_3$ edge to study high-energy magnetic excitations at energy transfers of more than 100 meV for overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with $x=0.25$ ($T_c=15$ K) and $x=0.30$ (non-superconducting) using identical single crystal samples for the two techniques. From constant-energy slices of neutron scattering cross-sections, we have identified magnetic excitations up to ~250 meV for $x=0.25$. Although the width in the momentum direction is large, the peak positions along the (pi, pi) direction agree with the dispersion relation of the spin-wave in the non-doped La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ (LCO), which is consistent with the previous RIXS results of cuprate superconductors. Using RIXS at the Cu-$L_3$ edge, we have measured the dispersion relations of the so-called paramagnon mode along both (pi, pi) and (pi, 0) directions. Although in both directions the neutron and RIXS data connect with each other and the paramagnon along (pi, 0) agrees well with the LCO spin-wave dispersion, the paramagnon in the (pi, pi) direction probed by RIXS appears to be less dispersive and the excitation energy is lower than the spin-wave of LCO near (pi/2, pi/2). Thus, our results indicate consistency between neutron inelastic scattering and RIXS, and elucidate the entire magnetic excitation in the (pi, pi) direction by the complementary use of two probes. The polarization dependence of the RIXS profiles indicates that appreciable charge excitations exist in the same energy range of magnetic excitations, reflecting the itinerant character of the overdoped sample. A possible anisotropy in the charge excitation intensity might explain the apparent differences in the paramagnon dispersion in the (pi, pi) direction as detected by the X-ray scattering., 7 pages, 7 figures

Understanding the origin of the spin transition in ${\mathrm{LaCoO}}_{3}$ is one of the long-standing aims in condensed matter physics. Aside from its fundamental interest, a detailed description of this crossover will have a direct impact on the interpretation of the semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT) and the properties of the high-temperature metallic phase in this compound, which has shown to have important applications in environmentally friendly energy production. To date, the spin transition has been investigated mainly as a function of temperature in thermal equilibrium. These results have hinted at dynamical effects. In this paper, we have investigated the SMT by means of pump-probe soft x-ray reflectivity experiments at the O $K$, Co $L$, and La $M$ edges and theoretical calculations within a DFT++ formalism. The results point towards a laser-induced metallization in which the optical transitions stabilize a metallic state with high-spin configuration and increased charge disproportionation

International audience; Strongly correlated electron systems are one of the central topics in contemporary solid-state physics. Prominent examples for such systems are Kondo lattices, i.e., intermetallic materials in which below a critical temperature, the Kondo temperature T-K, the magnetic moments become quenched and the effective masses of the conduction electrons approach the mass of a proton. In Ce-and Yb-based systems, this so-called heavy-fermion behavior is caused by interactions between the strongly localized 4f and itinerant electrons. A major and very controversially discussed issue in this context is how the localized electronic degree of freedom gets involved in the Fermi surface (FS) upon increasing the interaction between both kinds of electrons or upon changing the temperature. In this paper, we show that the FS of a prototypic Kondo lattice, YbRh2Si2, does not change its size or shape in a wide temperature range extending from well below to far above the single-ion Kondo temperature T-K similar to 25 K of this system. This experimental observation, obtained by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, is in remarkable contrast to the widely believed evolution from a large FS, including the 4f degrees of freedom, to a small FS, without the 4f's, upon increasing temperature. Our results explicitly demonstrate a need to further advance in theoretical approaches based on the periodic Anderson model in order to elucidate the temperature dependence of Fermi surfaces in Kondo lattices

Charge modulations are considered as a leading competitor of high-temperature superconductivity in the underdoped cuprates, and their relationship to Fermi surface reconstructions and to the pseudogap state is an important subject of current research. Overdoped cuprates, on the other hand, are widely regarded as conventional Fermi liquids without collective electronic order. For the overdoped (Bi,Pb)2.12Sr1.88CuO6+{\delta} (Bi2201) high-temperature superconductor, here we report resonant x-ray scattering measurements revealing incommensurate charge order reflections, with correlation lengths of 40-60 lattice units, that persist up to at least 250K. Charge order is markedly more robust in the overdoped than underdoped regime but the incommensurate wave vectors follow a common trend; moreover it coexists with a single, unreconstructed Fermi surface, without pseudogap or nesting features, as determined from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. This re-entrant charge order is reproduced by model calculations that consider a strong van Hove singularity within a Fermi liquid framework., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures
