Using a linear array of voltage electrodes with a separation of several micrometers on a $20 $nm thick and 30 $\mu$m long multigraphene sample we show that the measured resistance does not follow the usual length dependence according to Ohm's law. The deviations can be quantitatively explained taking into account Sharvin-Knudsen formula for ballistic transport. This allows us to obtain without free parameters the mean free path of the carriers in the sample at different temperatures. In agreement with recently reported values obtained with a different experimental method, we obtain that the carrier mean free path is of the order of $\sim 2 \mu$m with a mobility $\mu \sim 10^7 $cm$^{2}$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$. We present results on the magnetoresistance of the system Ni/Al203/n-doped Si/Al2O3/Ni in fabricated nanostructures. The results at temperature of 14K reveal a 75% magnetoresistance that decreases in value up to approximately 30K where the effect disappears. We observe minimum resistance in the antiparallel configurations of the source and drain of Ni. As a possibility, it seems to indicate the existence of a magnetic state at the Si/oxide interface. The average spin diffusion length obtained is of 650 nm approximately. Results are compared to the window of resistances that seems to exist between the tunnel barrier resistance and two threshold resistances but the spin transfer seems to work in the range and outside the two thresholds.

Two different points of view are available to understand the behavior of graphene at low energies. One is considering a large $N_F$ that makes graphene a semimetal, and another for small $N_F < 2.5$ that would make graphene a narrow gap semiconductor (D. T. Son, Phys. rev. B 75, 235423 (2007)), a prediction supported independently by Monte Carlo simulations (J. E. Drut and T. A. L\"ahde, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 026802 (2009), see also Phys. Rev. B 79, 241405(R) (2009)). Taking into account recently obtained experimental evidence for weakly coupled graphene layers, i.e. graphite (N. We have studied the resistivity of a large number of highly oriented graphite samples with areas ranging from several mm$^2$ to a few $\mu$m$^2$ and thickness from $\sim 10 $nm to several tens of micrometers. The measured resistance can be explained by the parallel contribution of semiconducting graphene layers with low carrier density $< 10^9$ cm$^{-2}$ and the one from metallic-like internal interfaces. The results indicate that ideal graphite with Bernal stacking structure is a narrow-gap semiconductor with an energy gap $E_g \sim 40 $meV., Comment: 14 pages, 4 Figures, to be published in New Journal of Physics (in press, 2012)

The intrinsic values of the carriers mobility and density of the graphene layers inside graphite, the well known structure built on these layers in the Bernal stacking configuration, are not well known mainly because most of the research was done in rather bulk samples where lattice defects hide their intrinsic values. By measuring the electrical resistance through microfabricated constrictions in micrometer small graphite flakes of a few tens of nanometers thickness we studied the ballistic behavior of the carriers. We found that the carriers' mean free path is micrometer large with a mobility $\mu \simeq 6 \times 10^6 $cm$^2$/Vs and a carrier density $n \simeq 7 \times 10^8 $cm$^{-2}$ per graphene layer at room temperature. These distinctive transport and ballistic properties have important implications for understanding the values obtained in single graphene and in graphite as well as for implementing this last in nanoelectronic devices., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

The electrical potential on the surface of $\sim 300$ nm thick SiO$_2$ grown on single crystalline Si substrates has been characterized at ambient conditions using electric field microscopy. Our results show an inhomogeneous potential distribution with fluctuations up to $\sim 0.4 $V within regions of $1 \mu$m. The potential fluctuations observed at the surface of these usual dielectric holders of graphene sheets should induce strong variations in the graphene charge densities and provide a simple explanation for some of the anomalous behaviors of the transport properties of graphene., Comment: 4 pages and 4 figures

In this work we show that for a quasi-2D system of size $\Omega$ and thickness $t$ the resistance goes as $(2\rho/\pi t)\ln(\Omega/W)$, diverging logarithmically with the size. Measurements in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) as well as numerical simulations confirm this relation. Furthermore, we present an experimental method that allows us to obtain the carriers mean free path $l(T)$, the Fermi wavelength $\lambda(T)$ and the mobility $\mu(T)$ directly from experiments without adjustable parameters. Measuring the electrical resistance through microfabricated constrictions in HOPG and observing the transition from ohmic to ballistic regime we obtain that $0.2 \mu$m $\lesssim l \lesssim 10 \mu$m, $0.1 \mu$m $\lesssim \lambda \lesssim 2 \mu$m and a mobility $5 \times 10^4$ cm$^2$/Vs $ \lesssim \mu \lesssim 4 \times 10^7$ cm$^2$/Vs when the temperature decreases from 270K to 3K. A comparison of these results with those from literature indicates that conventional, multiband Boltzmann-Drude approaches are inadequate for oriented graphite. We present a study of the magnetoresistance of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) as a function of the sample size. Our results show unequivocally that the magnetoresistance reduces with the sample size even for samples of hundreds of micrometers size. This sample size effect is due the large mean free path and Fermi wavelength of carriers in graphite and may explain the observed practically absence of magnetoresistance in micrometer confined small graphene samples where quantum effects should be at hand. These were not taken into account in the literature yet and ask for a revision of experimental and theoretical work on graphite., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We have prepared magnetic graphite samples bombarded by protons at low temperatures and low fluences to attenuate the large thermal annealing produced during irradiation. An overall optimization of sample handling allowed us to find Curie temperatures $ T_c \gtrsim 350$ K at the used fluences. The magnetization versus temperature shows unequivocally a linear dependence, which can be interpreted as due to excitations of spin waves in a two dimensional Heisenberg model with a weak uniaxial anisotropy., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Transparency of the metal/superconductor interface is discussed in a frame of the Kupryanov-Lukichev (K-L) quasiclassical boundary conditions. It is shown that the original K-L boundary transparency is expressed via the single-channel Landauer conductance. It is a source of dramatic discrepancy between the theory and experiments on the superconducting proximity effect. The improved multi-channel derivation is proposed for the boundary conditions, which rehabilitates consistency of the quasiclassical approach to the boundary transparency problem, and eliminates at least an order of magnitude of discrepancy between the theory and the experiment. The influence of the interface roughness and wave function symmetry mismatch at the boundary on the interface transparency is discussed. In their comment, A. Hakansson, J. Sanchez-Dehesa, F. Cervera, F. Meseguer, L. Sanchis, and J. Llinares say that our conclusion stating that diffraction prevails over refraction in acoustic lenses whose aperture is of several wavelengths, such as those addressed in our calculations [N. Garcia, M. Nieto-Vesperinas, E. V. Ponizovskaya, and M.Torres, Phys. Rev. E 67, 046606 (2003)] and in their experiments [F.Cervera, L. Sanchis, J. V. Sanchez-Perez, R. Martinez-Sala, C. Rubio, F.Meseguer, C. Lopez, D. Caballero, and J. Sanchez-Dehesa, Phys. Rev. Lett.88, 023902 (2003)], is misleading because the size of their lenses is larger than ours. They state that diffraction effects are negligible at the scale of their experiments. In this reply we calculate the propagation of a plane wave through both a lens and a slab of aluminum cylinders, identical to those presented by such authors in previous experiments, by using a finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. We then compare our results to the experiments previously reported by the authors of the comment and significant differences are found. Our present calculations show that refraction and diffraction are intrinsically interwoven also at the scale of their experiments.

We discuss materials based on arrays of metallic magnetic cylindrical structures near ferromagnetic resonance with applied magnetic fields at microwave frequencies. We have found that the materials have a negative refraction index when the appropriate structure is chosen. Numerical FDTD simulations were performed, after a very large number of geometries were swept. The simulations reveal that only ferromagnetic cylinders, with diameters of 0.1 cm and 0.5 cm apart, and with periodic or random configurations, are left-handed materials with very small losses; i.e. with transmitivity practically unity or no losses.

In this study we present a new method of measuring magnetostriction with an atomic force microscope adapted for the application magnetic fields. The experiment allows us to visualise, in an elegant and educational way how the lateral magnetoelastic shape changes take place on the sample surface when a magnetic field is applied. We have, furthermore, used this technique to observe magnetically induced strains as small as 5*10-8, and have measured Ni, permalloy and commercial Cu wires and films, as well as pure Cu and Pt wires, where results are in agreement with other methods of measurement. The applications are, moreover, relevant to studies of ballistic magnetoresistance, where we can draw conclusions involving the effect of the magnetically induced strains on magnetoresistance measured at the same time as magnestostriction., Comment: 14 pages 4 figures submitted to APL
