The binary manganese aluminium (MnAl) alloy with L$1_0$ crystal structure is a promising rare earth element-free permanent magnetic material because of its exceptional magnetic properties. However, experimentally synthesizing it in a stable bulk form is extremely challenging. Here, an alternative method of stabilizing the material is proposed and theoretically verified by partially substituting Mn and Al sites with Fe and Ni and identifying its enhanced phase stability, magnetic anisotropy, and coercivity from density functional theory (DFT), machine learning (ML) crystal graph convolution neural network (CGCNN), and micro-magnetic modeling. When considering a fixed ($50\%$)-Ni, the magnetic anisotropy increases with the increasing Fe content but decreases the formation energy. The calculated formation energies, elastic constants, and phonon frequencies demonstrate that all the binary and quaternary compositions are stable. Most importantly, the magnetic moment and magnetic anisotropy constants in $50\%$-Fe substituted composition (equiatomic phase) increase significantly compared to the MnAl. The predicted coercivity of the equiatomic phase is larger than the parent compound calculated by combining DFT computed parameters with micromagnetic simulations., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Increased demand for high-performance permanent magnets in the electric vehicle and wind turbine industries has prompted the search for cost-effective alternatives.Discovering new magnetic materials with the desired intrinsic and extrinsic permanent magnet properties presents a significant challenge to researchers because of issues with the global supply of rare-earth elements, material stability, and a low maximum magnetic energy product BH$_{max}$.While first-principle density functional theory (DFT) predicts materials' magnetic moments, magneto-crystalline anisotropy constants, and exchange interactions, it cannot compute coercivity ($H_c$).Although it is possible to calculate $H_c$ theoretically with micromagnetic simulations, the predicted value is larger than the experiment by almost an order of magnitude, due to the Brown paradox.To circumvent these, we employ machine learning (ML) methods on an extensive database obtained from experiments, DFT calculations, and micromagnetic modeling.The use of a large dataset enables realistic $H_c$ predictions for materials such as Ce-doped Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B, comparing favorably against micromagnetically simulated coercivities.Remarkably, our ML model accurately identifies uniaxial magneto-crystalline anisotropy as the primary contributor to $H_c$. With DFT calculations, we predict the Nd-site dependent magnetic anisotropy behavior in Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B, confirming that Nd $4g$-sites mainly contribute to uniaxial magneto-crystalline anisotropy, and also calculate Curie temperature (T$_{C}$).Both calculated results are in good agreement with experiment.The coupled experimental dataset and ML modeling with DFT input predict $H_c$ with far greater accuracy and speed than was previously possible using micromagnetic modeling.Further, we reverse-engineer the inter-grain exchange coupling with micromagnetic simulations by employing the ML predictions., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures

Migdal-Eliashberg theory is one of the state-of-the-art methods for describing conventional superconductors from first principles. However, widely used implementations assume a constant density of states around the Fermi level, which hinders a proper description of materials with distinct features in its vicinity. Here, we present an implementation of the Migdal-Eliashberg theory within the EPW code that considers the full electronic structure and accommodates scattering processes beyond the Fermi surface. To significantly reduce computational costs, we introduce a non-uniform sampling scheme along the imaginary axis. We demonstrate the power of our implementation by applying it to the sodalite-like clathrates YH$_6$ and CaH$_6$, and to the covalently-bonded H$_3$S and D$_3$S. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of maximizing the density of states at the Fermi level in doped H$_3$S and BaSiH$_8$ within the full-bandwidth treatment compared to the constant-density-of-states approximation. By performing density functional calculations, we find a giant magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) constant in abundant element cerium (Ce) substituted M-type hexaferrite, in the energetically favorable strontium site, assisted by a quantum confined electron transfer from Ce to specific iron (2a) site. Remarkably, the calculated electronic structure shows that the electron transfer leads to the formation of Ce$^{3+}$ and Fe$^{2+}$ at the $2a$ site producing an occupied Ce($4f^1$) state below the Fermi level that adds a significant contribution to MCA and magnetic moment. A half Ce-substitution forms a metallic state, while a full substitution retains the semiconducting state of the strontium-hexaferrite (host). In the latter, the band gap is reduced due to the formation of charge transferred states in the gap region of the host. The optical absorption coefficient shows an enhanced anisotropy between light polarization in parallel and perpendicular directions. Calculated formation energies, including the analysis of probable competing phases, and elastic constants confirm that both compositions are chemically and mechanically stable. With successful synthesis, the Ce-hexaferrite can be a new high-performing critical-element-free permanent magnet material adapted for use in devices such as automotive traction drive motors., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We present a first-principles study of defect formation and electronic structure of erbium (Er)-doped yttria (Y$_2$O$_3$). This is an emerging material for spin-photon interfaces in quantum information science due to the narrow linewidth optical emission from Er dopants at standard telecommunication wavelengths and their potential for quantum memories and transducers. We calculate formation energies of neutral, negatively, and positively charged Er dopants and find the charge neutral configuration to be the most stable, consistent with experiment. Of the two substitutional sites of Er for Y, the $C_2$ (more relevant for quantum memories) and $C_{3i}$ (more relevant for quantum transduction), we identify the former as possessing the lowest formation energy. The electronic properties are calculated using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional along with the Hubbard $U$ parameter and spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which yields a $\sim$ 6 $\mu_B$ orbital and a $\sim$ 3 $\mu_B$ spin magnetic moment, and 11 electrons in the Er $4f$ shell, confirming the formation of charge-neutral Er$^{3+}$. This standard density functional theory (DFT) approach underestimates the band gap of the host and lacks a first-principles justification for $U$. To overcome these issues, we performed screened hybrid functional (HSE) calculations, including a negative $U$ for the $4f$ orbitals, with mixing ($\alpha$) and screening ($w$) parameters. These produced robust electronic features with slight modifications in the band gap and the $4f$ splittings depending on the choice of tuning parameters. EPW is an open-source software for $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations of electron-phonon interactions and related materials properties. The code combines density functional perturbation theory and maximally-localized Wannier functions to efficiently compute electron-phonon coupling matrix elements on ultra-fine Brillouin zone grids. This data is employed for predictive calculations of temperature-dependent properties and phonon-assisted quantum processes in bulk solids and low-dimensional materials. Here, we report on significant new developments in the code that occurred during the period 2016-2022, namely: a transport module for the calculation of charge carrier mobility and conductivity under electric and magnetic fields within the $\textit{ab initio}$ Boltzmann transport equation; a superconductivity module for the calculation of critical temperature and gap structure in phonon-mediated superconductors within the $\textit{ab initio}$ anisotropic multi-band Eliashberg theory; an optics module for calculations of phonon-assisted indirect transitions; a module for the calculation of small and large polarons without supercells using the $\textit{ab initio}$ polaron equations; and a module for calculating electron-phonon couplings, band structure renormalization, and temperature-dependent optical spectra using the special displacement method. For each capability, we outline the methodology and implementation, and provide example calculations. We describe recent code refactoring to prepare EPW for exascale architectures, we discuss efficient parallelization strategies, and report on extreme parallel scaling tests., Comment: 61 pages, 9 figures

Ising superconductivity, observed experimentally in NbSe$_{2}$ and similar materials, has generated tremendous interest. Recently, attention was called to the possible role that spin fluctuations (SF) play in this phenomenon, in addition to the dominant electron-phonon coupling (EPC); the possibility of a predominantly-triplet state was discussed and led to a conjecture of viable singlet-triplet Leggett oscillations. However, these hypotheses have not been put to a quantitative test. In this paper, we report first principle calculations of the EPC and also estimate coupling with SF, including full momentum dependence. We find that: (1) EPC is strongly anisotropic, largely coming from the K-K' scattering, and therefore excludes triplet symmetry even as an excited state; (2) superconductivity is substantially weakened by SF, but anisotropy remains as above; and, (3) we do find the possibility of a Leggett mode, not in a singlet-triplet but in an $s_{++}$ - $s_\pm$ channel., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

MAX phase family has been extended by the addition of late transition metals at the A-site with the expectation of diverse functional properties, such as magnetism and catalysis. Here, we present our systematic density functional investigation on the phase stability and physical properties of newly synthesized Ti2ZnX (X = C, N) phasesin comparison with conventional Ti2AlX (X = C, N).Due to smaller size of N as compared to C, the unit cell dimensionis reduced when C atoms are replaced by N atoms atthe X-site. The thermodynamic, mechanical and dynamical stabilities are validatedby estimating the formation energies, elastic constants and phonon dispersions, respectively. The elastic properties of Ti2ZnN are nearly isotropic while those of Ti2ZnC are completely anisotropic. To understand the thin-film characteristicsin Ti2ZnX, the surface properties with (001)-terminated slabs are investigated. Both Ti2ZnX bulk and (001)-surfaces exhibit metal-like electronic structure. There is a strong covalent bonding between Ti-X and Ti-Zn atoms.Additional states are generated at the Fermi level (EF) due to the unusual d-pstates hybridization between Ti and Zn atoms.The anisotropy in chemical bonding is confirmed by the cleavage energy difference between Ti-X and Ti-Zn atoms. Here,Ti(X)-001 and Zn-001 terminations are stable surfaces, however, in terms of chemical potentials, Zn-001 termination is the most favorable.

Iron-based hexaferrites are critical-element-free permanent magnet components of magnetic devices. Of particular interest is electron-doped M-type hexaferrite i.e., LaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ (LaM) in which extra electrons introduced by lanthanum substitution of barium/strontium play a key role in uplifting the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. We investigate the electronic structure of lanthanum hexaferrite using a \textit{localized} density functional theory which reproduces semiconducting behavior and identifies the origin of the very large magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Localized charge transfer from lanthanum to the iron at the crystal's $2a$ site produces a narrow $3d_{z^2}$ valence band strongly locking the magnetization along the $c$ axis. The calculated uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energies from fully self-consistent calculations are nearly double the single-shot values, and agree well with available experiments. The chemical similarity of lanthanum to other rare earths suggests that LaM can host for other rare earths possessing non-trivial $4f$ electronic states for, \textit{e.g.,} microwave-optical quantum transduction., Comment: 10 pages and 9 figures

The tin-selenide and tin-sulfide classes of materials undergo multiple structural transitions under high pressure leading to periodic lattice distortions, superconductivity, and topologically non-trivial phases, yet a number of controversies exist regarding the structural transformations in these systems. We perform first-principles calculations within the framework of density functional theory and a careful comparison of our results with available experiments on SnSe$_2$ reveals that the apparent contradictions among high-pressure results can be attributed to differences in experimental conditions. We further demonstrate that under hydrostatic pressure a $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3} \times 1$ superstructure can be stabilized above 20 GPa in SnS$_2$ via a periodic lattice distortion as found recently in the case of SnSe$_2$, and that this pressure-induced phase transition is due to the combined effect of Fermi surface nesting and electron-phonon coupling at a momentum wave vector $\mathbf{q}$ = $(1/3, 1/3, 0)$. In addition, we investigate the contribution of nonadiabatic corrections on the calculated phonon frequencies, and show that the quantitative agreement between theory and experiment for the high-energy $A_{1g}$ phonon mode is improved when these effects are taken into account. Finally, we examine the nature of the superconducting state recently observed in SnSe$_2$ under nonhydrostatic pressure and predict the emergence of superconductivity with a comparable critical temperature in SnS$_2$ under similar experimental conditions. Neutron diffraction and magnetic susceptibility studies show that orthorhombic single-crystals of topological semimetals ${\rm Sr(Mn_{0.9}Cu_{0.1})Sb_2}$ and ${\rm Sr(Mn_{0.9}Zn_{0.1})Sb_2}$ undergo three dimensional C-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the Mn$^{2+}$ moments at $T_N = 200\pm10$ and $210\pm12$ K, respectively, significantly lower than that of the parent SrMnSb$_2$ with $T_N=297 \pm 3$ K. Magnetization versus applied magnetic field (perpendicular to MnSb planes) below $T_N$ exhibits slightly modified de Haas van Alphen oscillations for the Zn-doped crystal as compared to that of the parent compound. By contrast, the Cu-doped system does not show de Haas van Alphen magnetic oscillations, suggesting that either Cu substitution for Mn changes the electronic structure of the parent compound substantially, or that the Cu sites are strong scatterers of carriers that significantly shorten their mean free path thus diminishing the oscillations. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations including spin-orbit coupling predict the C-type AFM state for the parent, Cu-, and Zn-doped systems and identify the $a$-axis (i.e., perpendicular to the Mn layer) as the easy magnetization direction in the parent and 12.5% of Cu or Zn substitutions. In contrast, 25% of Cu content changes the easy magnetization to the $b$-axis (i.e., within the Mn layer). We find that the incorporation of Cu and Zn in SrMnSb$_2$ tunes electronic bands near the Fermi level resulting in different band topology and semi-metallicity. The parent and Zn-doped systems have coexistence of electron and hole pockets with opened Dirac cone around the Y-point whereas the Cu-doped system has dominant hole pockets around the Fermi level with a distorted Dirac cone. The tunable electronic structure may point out possibilities of rationalizing the experimentally observed de Haas van Alphen magnetic oscillations.

Around discontinuous (first-order) magnetic phase transitions the strong caloric response of materials to the application of small fields is widely studied for the development of solid-state refrigeration. Typically strong magnetostructural coupling drives such transitions and the attendant substantial hysteresis dramatically reduces the cooling performance. In this context we describe a purely electronic mechanism which pilots a first-order paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition in divalent lanthanide compounds and which explains the giant non-hysteretic magnetocaloric effect recently discovered in a Eu$_2$In compound. There is positive feedback between the magnetism of itinerant valence electrons and the ferromagnetic ordering of local $f$-electron moments, which appears as a topological change to the Fermi surface. The origin of this electronic mechanism stems directly from Eu's divalency, which explains the absence of a similar discontinuous transition in Gd$_2$In., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

We report magnetocrystalline anisotropy of pure and Fe/Si substituted SmCo5. The calculations were performed using the advanced density functional theory (DFT) including onsite electron-electron correlation and spin orbit coupling. Si substitution substantially reduces both uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and magnetic moment. Fe substitution with the selective site, on the other hand, enhances the magnetic moment with limited chemical stability. The magnetic hardness of SmCo5 is governed by Sm 4f localized orbital contributions, which get flatten and split with the substitution of Co (2c) with Si/Fe atoms, except the Fe substitution at 3g site. It is also confirmed that Si substitutions favor the thermodynamic stability on the contrary to diminishing the magnetic and anisotropic effect in SmCo5 at either site.

We performed high pressure x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, and transport measurements combined with first-principles calculations to investigate the behavior of tin diselenide (SnSe$_2$) under compression. The obtained single-crystal XRD data indicate the formation of a $(1/3,1/3,1)$-type superlattice above 17 GPa. According to our density functional theory results, the pressure-induced transition to the commensurate periodic lattice distortion (PLD) phase is due to the combined effect of strong Fermi surface nesting and electron-phonon coupling at a momentum wave vector $\mathbf{q}=(1/3,1/3,1)$. In contrast, similar PLD transitions associated with charge density wave (CDW) orderings in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) do not involve significant Fermi surface nesting. The discovered pressure-induced PLD is quite remarkable, as pressure usually suppresses CDW phases in related materials. A systematic study of magnetocrystalline anisotropy is performed for R(La/Ce/Nd)2Fe14B tetragonal compound with the site substitution mechanism. Theoretical calculation suggests the 50% doping with Ce at 4f-site can lead to competitive magnetic anisotropy to that of the champion magnet Nd2Fe14B. Electronic structure calculations are performed using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method by inclusion of the spin-orbit coupling and Hubbard (U) interaction in the calculation for the rare-earth elements to get the correct influence of the localized 4f orbitals. Detailed analysis of the magnetic moment and magnetic anisotropy change has been studied by individually inserting the La and Ce atoms at the two inequivalent sites (4g and 4f sites) of the 2-14-B tetragonal structure. Accurate prediction of the total magnetic moment with the orbital contribution in the 2-14-B structure shows the maximum moment for Ce2Fe14B (3.86 {\mu}B/f.u less) compared to Nd2Fe14B. Theoretical analysis confirms that regardless of the anti-parallel spin moment emerging in the Ce atom the complex structure of the Ce substituted compound at 4f-site gives the maximum anisotropy of 2.27 meV/cell with lowering the magnetic moment by 1.26 {\mu}B/f.u. compared to the Nd2Fe14B compound.

By understanding the small easy axis magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of hexagonal Ce2Co17, an attempt has been made to improve anisotropy and consequently to obtain better characteristics for a high energy permanent magnet via site selective substitutional doping of Ce/Co with suitable elements. The present calculations of the electronic and magnetic properties of Ce2Co17 and related substituted compounds have been performed using the full potential linear augmented plane wave (FPLAPW) method within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Sm-substituted compounds were simulated using Coulomb corrected GGA (GGA+U) to provide a better representation of energy bands due to the strongly correlated Sm-f electrons. The formation energies for all substituted compounds are found to be negative which indicate their structural stability. Of the substitutions, Zr substitution at the Co-dumbbell site enhances uniaxial anisotropy of Ce2Co17. Furthermore, Sm-substitution at Ce-2c sites favors incremental MAE whereas a La-substitution at both 2b- and 2c-sites depletes the tiny MAE in Ce2Co17. These observed trends in the MAE have been examined in terms of contributions from various electronic states. Finally, Ce2Zr2Co15 and SmCeCo17 are foreseen as suitable materials for designing permanent magnets derived from the crystal lattice structure of hexagonal Ce2Co17., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

SmCo5 permanent magnets exhibit enormous uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy and have a high Curie temperature. However, a low energy product presents a significant drawback in the performance of SmCo5 permanent magnets. In order to increase the energy product in SmCo5, we propose substituting fixed amount of cobalt with iron in a new magnet, SmFe3CoNi, where inclusion of nickel metal makes this magnet thermodynamically stable. We explain a profound complexity of magnetic interactions of some technologically relevant gadolinium intermetallics using an ab-initio electronic structure theory which includes disordered local moments and strong $f$-electron correlations. The theory correctly finds GdZn and GdCd to be simple ferromagnets and predicts a remarkably large increase of Curie temperature with pressure of +1.5 K kbar$^{-1}$ for GdCd confirmed by our experimental measurements of +1.6 K kbar$^{-1}$. Moreover we find the origin of a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic competition in GdMg manifested by non-collinear, canted magnetic order at low temperatures. Replacing 35\% of the Mg atoms with Zn removes this transition in excellent agreement with longstanding experimental data., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

We have studied the problem of phase stability in Fe-Pt and Co-Pt alloy systems. We have used the orbital peeling technique in the conjunction of augmented space recursion based on the tight binding linear orbital method as the method for the calculation of pair interaction energies. In particular, we have generalized our earlier technique to take into account of magnetic effects for the cases where the magnetic transition is higher than the order disorder chemical transition temperature as in the case of Co$_3$Pt. We report here the preparation and measurements on the susceptibility, sound velocity and internal friction for Ni-Pt systems. We show the differences in the stability of 3d-5d (NiPt and CuAu) and 3d-4d (NiPd and CuAg) alloys arise mainly due to relativistic corrections. The magnetic properties of disordered NiPd and NiPt alloys also differ due to these corrections which lead to increase in the separation between s-d bands of 5d elements in these alloys. For the magnetic case we analyze the results in terms of splitting of majority and minority spin d-band centers of the 3d elements. We further examine the effect of relativistic corrections to the pair energies and order disorder transition temperatures in these alloys. We have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of Fe-Pt, Co-Pt and Ni-Pt alloy systems in ordered and disordered phases. The influence of various exchange-correlation functionals on values of equilibrium lattice parameters and magnetic moments in ordered Fe-Pt, Co-Pt and Ni-Pt alloys have been studied using linearized muffin-tin orbital method. The electronic structure calculations for the disordered alloys have been carried out using augmented space recursion technique in the framework of tight binding linearized muffin-tin orbital method. The effect of short range order has also been studied in the disordered phase of these systems. We have studied the problem of phase stability in NiPt alloy system. We have used the augmented space recursion based on the TB-LMTO as the method for studying the electronic structure of the alloys. In particular, we have used the relativistic generalization of our earlier technique.
