The valence band (VB) structure of an Al0.5TiZrPdCuNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) obtained from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been compared to that recently calculated by Odbadrakh et al, 2019. Both experimental and theoretical VBs show split-band structures typical of alloys composed from the early (TE) and late (TL) transition metals. Accordingly, several properties of this alloy (both in the glassy and crystalline state) associated with the electronic structure (ES), are compared with those of similar TE-TL alloys. The comparison shows in addition to the usual dependence on the total TL content strong effect of alloying with Al on the density of states at the Fermi level, N(EF) and on the magnetic susceptibility of Al0.5TiZrPdCuNi HEA, which is like that of conventional glassy alloys, such as Zr-Cu-Al ones. Despite some similarity between the shapes of theoretical and corresponding experimental VBs there are significant quantitative differences between them which should be taken into account in any future studies of ES in HEAs and other compositionally complex alloys (CCA).

A new amorphous alloy system $(TiZrNbCu)_{1-x}Co_x$ covering a broad composition range from the high-entropy (HEA) to Co rich alloys (x$\leqslant$ 0.43) has been fabricated, characterized and investigated. A comprehensive study of the chemical compositions, homogeneity, thermal stability, electronic structure and magnetic and mechanical properties has been performed. All properties change their variations with x within the HEA range. In particular, the average atomic volume deviates from the Vegard's law for x$\ge 0.2$, where also the average atomic packing fraction suddenly changes. The valence band structure, studied with ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy, shows a split-band shape with 3d-states of Co approaching the Fermi level on increasing x. Due to onset of magnetic correlations magnetic susceptibility rapidly increases for x$\ge 0.25$. Very high microhardness increases rapidly with x. The results are compared with those for similar binary and quinary metallic glasses and with those for Cantor type of crystalline alloys., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures

A comprehensive study of selected properties of four (TiZrNbCu)_1-xNi_x (x \le 0.25) amorphous high entropy alloys (a-HEA) has been performed. The samples were ribbons about 20 \mum thick and their fully amorphous state was verified by X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis. The surface morphology, precise composition and the distribution of components were studied with a Scanning electron microscope (SEM) with an energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) attachment. The properties selected were the melting temperature (T_m), the low temperature specific heat (LTSH), the magnetic susceptibility \chi_exp and the Young^,s modulus (E). Whereas LTSH and \chi_exp were measured for the as-cast samples, E was measured both for as-cast samples and relaxed samples (after a short anneal close to the glass transition temperature). The LTSH showed that the electronic density of states at the Fermi level, N_0(E_F), decreases with increasing x, whereas the Debye temperature (\theta_D) increases with x. This is similar to what is observed in binary and ternary amorphous alloys of early transition metals (TE) with late transition metals (TL) and indicates that N_0(E_F) is dominated by the d-electrons of the TE. The LTSH also showed the absence of superconductivity down to 1.8K and indicated the emergence of the Boson peak above 4K in all alloys.The free-electron like paramagnetic contribution to \chi_exp also decreases with x, whereas E, like \theta_D, increases with x, indicating enhanced interatomic bonding on addition of Ni. The applicability of the rule of mixtures to these and other similar HEAs is briefly discussed.

Understanding the formation of bulk metallic glasses (BMG) in metallic systems and finding a reliable criterion for selection of BMG compositions are among the most important issues in condensed matter physics and material science. Using the results of magnetic susceptibility measurements performed on both amorphous and crystallized Cu-Hf alloys (30-70 at% Cu) we find a correlation between the difference in magnetic susceptibilities of corresponding glassy and crystalline alloys and the variation in the glass forming ability (GFA) in these alloys. Since the same correlation can be inferred from data for the properties associated with the electronic structure of Cu-Zr alloys, it seems quite general and may apply to other glassy alloys based on early and late transition metals. This correlation is plausible from the free energy considerations and provides a simple way to select the compositions with high GFA., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Single crystals of the free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) obtained from diethyl ether (ether) and carbon disulfide (CS2) were characterized by the X-ray diffraction, IR, EPR and SQUID magnetization techniques. The X-ray structural analysis and IR spectra showed that the DPPH form crystallized from ether (DPPH1) is solvent free, whereas that one obtained from CS2 (DPPH2) is a solvate of the composition 4DPPH.CS2. Principal values of the g-tensor were estimated by the X-band EPR spectroscopy at room and low (10 K) temperatures. Magnetization studies revealed the presence of antiferromagnetically coupled dimers in both types of crystals. However, the way of dimerization as well as the strength of exchange couplings are different in the two DPPH samples, which is in accord with their crystal structures. The obtained results improved parameters accuracy and enabled better understanding of properties of DPPH as a standard sample in the EPR spectrometry.

Magnetic properties of single crystals of the heterometallic complex [Cu(bpy)$_3$]$_2$[Cr(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$]NO$_3\cdot $9H$_2$O (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) have been investigated. From the recorded EPR spectra, the spin-Hamiltonian parameters have been determined. The magnetization measurements have shown magnetic anisotropy at low temperatures, which has been analysed as a result of the zero-field splitting of the Cr$^{\mathrm{III}}$ ion. By fitting the exactly derived magnetization expression to the measured magnetization data, the axial zero-field splitting parameter, D, has been calculated. Comparing to the EPR measurements, it has been confirmed that $D$ can be determined from the measurements of the macroscopic magnetization on the single crystals.

Nanocrystalline Al-doped nickel ferrite powders have been synthesized by sol-gel auto-ignition method and the effect of non-magnetic aluminum content on the structural and magnetic properties has been studied. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that the powders obtained are single phase with inverse spinel structure. The calculated grain sizes from XRD data have been verified using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM photographs show that the powders consist of nanometer-sized grains. It was observed that the characteristic grain size decreases from 29 to 6 nm as the non-magnetic Al content increases, which was attributed to the influence of non-magnetic Al concentration on the grain size. Magnetic hysteresis loops were measured at room temperature with a maximum applied magnetic field of 1T. As aluminum content increases, the measured magnetic hysteresis curves become more and more narrow and the saturation magnetization and remanent magnetization both decreased. The reduction of agnetization compared to bulk is a consequence of spin non-collinearity. Further reduction of magnetization with increase of aluminum content is caused by non-magnetic Al^{3+} ions and weakened interaction between sublattices. The magnetization processes in binary magnetic/nonmagnetic amorphous alloy Hf_{57}Fe_{43} are investigated by the detailed measurements of magnetic hysteresis loops, temperature dependence of magnetization, relaxation of magnetization and magnetic ac susceptibility, including a nonlinear term. Blocking of magnetic moments at lower temperatures is accompanied with the slow relaxation of magnetization and magnetic hysteresis loops. All of the observed properties are explained with the superparamagnetic behaviour of the single domain magnetic clusters inside the nonmagnetic host, their blocking by the anisotropy barriers and thermal fluctuation over the barriers accompanied by relaxation of magnetization. From magnetic viscosity analysis based on thermal relaxation over the anisotropy barriers it is found out that magnetic clusters occupy the characteristic volume from 25 up to 200 nm3 . The validity of the superparamagnetic model of Hf_{57}Fe_{43} is based on the concentration of iron in the Hf_{100-x}Fe_{43} system that is just below the threshold for the long range magnetic ordering. This work throws more light on magnetic behaviour of other amorphous alloys, too.
