We study the diffusive transport of magnons through the compensated ferrimagnetic insulator Gd3Fe5O12 (GdIG). The magnons are injected and detected electrically in a non-local measurement configuration via two parallel Pt strips deposited on top of the ferrimagnet. GdIG exhibits a rich magnon spectrum, with several thermally populated magnon bands at room temperature. We observe a strong temperature and field dependence of the non-local voltage in the detector strip. Just below the magnetization compensation temperature we find that the increasing magnetic field causes an unexpected enhancement of the non-local signal. A comparison with GdIG spin wave spectra obtained from atomistic modeling indicates that the thermal magnon population is important for understanding the non-local voltage signal.

We have fabricated ferrite cantilevers in which their vibrational properties can be controlled by external magnetic fields. Submicron-scale cantilever structures were made from Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) films by physical etching combined with use of a focused ion beam milling technique. We found that the cantilevers exhibit two resonance modes which correspond to horizontal and vertical vibrations. Under external magnetic fields, the resonance frequency of the horizontal mode increases, while that of the vertical mode decreases, quantitatively consistent with our numerical simulation for magnetic forces. The changes in resonance frequencies with magnetic fields reach a few percent, showing that efficient magnetic control of resonance frequencies was achieved., Comment: Appl. Phys. Lett

We theoretically study the effects of strong magnetoelastic coupling on the transport properties of magnetic insulators. We develop a Boltzmann transport theory for the mixed magnon-phonon modes (magnon polarons) and determine transport coefficients and spin diffusion length. Magnon-polaron formation causes anomalous features in the magnetic field and temperature dependence of the spin Seebeck effect when the disorder scattering in the magnetic and elastic subsystems is sufficiently different. Experimental data by Kikkawa et al. [PRL 117, 207203 (2016)] on yttrium iron garnet films can be explained by an acoustic quality that is much better than the magnetic quality of the material. We predict similar anomalous features in the spin and heat conductivity and non-local spin transport experiments.

Spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) has been investigated in Pt/NiO/YIG structures in a wide range of temperature and NiO thickness. The SMR shows a negative sign below a temperature which increases with the NiO thickness. This is contrary to a conventional SMR theory picture applied to Pt/YIG bilayer which always predicts a positive SMR. The negative SMR is found to persist even when NiO blocks the spin transmission between Pt and YIG, indicating it is governed by the spin current response of NiO layer. We explain the negative SMR by the NiO 'spin-flop' coupled with YIG, which can be overridden at higher temperatures by positive SMR contribution from YIG. Spin fluctuation and transition have always been one of central topics of magnetism and condensed matter science. Experimentally, the spin fluctuation is found transcribed onto scattering intensity in the neutron scattering process, which is represented by dynamical magnetic susceptibility and maximized at phase transitions. Importantly, a neutron carries spin without electric charge, and it can bring spin into a sample without being disturbed by electric energy, although large facilities such as a nuclear reactor is necessary. Here we show that spin pumping, frequently used in nanoscale spintronic devices, provides a desktop micro probe for spin transition; spin current is a flux of spin without an electric charge and its transport reflects spin excitation. We demonstrate detection of antiferromagnetic transition in ultra-thin CoO films via frequency dependent spin-current transmission measurements, which provides a versatile probe for phase transition in an electric manner in minute devices.

Surface plasmons, free-electron collective oscillations in metallic nanostructures, provide abundant routes to manipulate light-electron interactions that can localize light energy and alter electromagnetic field distributions at subwavelength scales. The research field of plasmonics thus integrates nano-photonics with electronics. In contrast, electronics is also entering a new era of spintronics, where spin currents play a central role in driving devices. However, plasmonics and spin-current physics have so far been developed independently. Here, we demonstrate the generation of spin currents by surface plasmons. Using Au nanoparticles embedded in a Pt/BiY2Fe5O12 bilayer film, we show that, when the Au nanoparticles fulfill the surface-plasmon-resonance condition, spin currents are generated across the Pt/BiY2Fe5O12 interface. This plasmonic spin pumping results from nonequilibrium states of spins excited by surface-plasmon-induced evanescent electromagnetic fields in the BiY2Fe5O12 layer. Such plasmonic spin pumping will invigorate research on spin-current physics, and pave the way for future spin-based plasmonic devices., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures
