Field-effect devices constructed by stacking flakes of van der Waals (vdW) materials, with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) playing the role of gate dielectric, often exhibit virtually no hysteresis in their characteristics. This permits exquisitely detailed studies of diverse gate-voltage-tuned phenomena in vdW devices. Recently, however, a dramatic form of gate hysteresis, sometimes called the "gate doesn't work" (GDW) or "electron ratchet" effect, has been seen in certain individual vdW devices that seem otherwise unexceptional. When it occurs, this hysteresis phenomenon is striking and robust, yet it is difficult to reliably reproduce between devices and, largely as a result, its origin remains disputed. Most devices where it has been seen have a bilayer graphene channel and nominal rotational alignment between the graphene and hBN, which has engendered explanations based on properties of bilayer graphene combined with moir\'e effects. Here, we report our studies of the phenomenon observed in devices that have multilayer graphene channels. We find that the effect can occur in devices with graphite channels that have many more than two graphene layers, in which case it is unambiguously associated with just one surface of the graphite. It can also survive to room temperature, occur in the absence of intentional rotational alignment with hBN, persist when a monolayer of WSe2 is inserted between the graphene and hBN, and exhibit continuous relaxation on timescales of hours or longer. Understanding surface collective dynamics in quantum materials is crucial for advancing quantum technologies. For example, surface phonon modes in quantum paraelectrics are thought to play an essential role in facilitating interfacial superconductivity. However, detecting these modes, especially below 1 terahertz (THz), is challenging due to limited sampling volumes and the need for high spectroscopic resolution. Here, we report surface soft transverse optical (TO1) phonon dynamics in KTaO3 and SrTiO3 by developing surface-sensitive spintronic THz spectroscopy that can sense the collective modes only a few nanometers deep from the surface. In KTaO3, the TO1 mode softens and sharpens with decreasing temperature, leveling off at 0.7 THz. In contrast, this mode in SrTiO3 broadens significantly below the quantum paraelectric crossover and coincides with the hardening of a sub-meV phonon mode related to the antiferrodistortive transition. These observations that deviate from their bulk properties may have implications for interfacial superconductivity and ferroelectricity. The rapid development of moir\'e quantum matter has recently led to the remarkable discovery of the fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect, and sparked predictions of other novel correlation-driven topological states. Here, we investigate the interplay of electronic crystals with integer and fractional Chern insulators in a moir\'e lattice of rhomobohedral pentalayer graphene (RPG) aligned with hexagonal boron nitride. At a doping of one electron per moir\'e unit cell, we see a correlated insulator with a Chern number that can be tuned between $C=0$ and $+1$ by an electric displacement field, accompanied by an array of other such insulators formed at fractional band fillings, $\nu$. Collectively, these states likely correspond to trivial and topological electronic crystals, some of which spontaneously break the discrete translational symmetry of the moir\'e lattice. Upon applying a modest magnetic field, a narrow region forms around $\nu=2/3$ in which transport measurements imply the emergence of a fractional Chern insulator, along with hints of weaker states at other fractional $\nu$. In the same sample, we also see a unique sequence of incipient Chern insulators arising over a broad range of incommensurate band filling near two holes per moir\'e unit cell. Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) hosts a multitude of strongly correlated states at partial fillings of its flat bands. In a magnetic field, these flat bands further evolve into a unique Hofstadter spectrum renormalized by strong Coulomb interactions. Here, we study the interacting Hofstadter states spontaneously formed within the topological magnetic subbands of an ultraclean MATBG device, notably including symmetry-broken Chern insulator (SBCI) states and fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states. The observed SBCI states form a cascade with their Chern numbers mimicking the main sequence correlated Chern insulators. The FQH states in MATBG form in Jain sequence; however, they disappear at high magnetic field, distinct from conventional FQH states which strengthen with increasing magnetic field. We reveal a unique magnetic field-driven phase transition from composite fermion phases to a dissipative Fermi liquid. Our theoretical analysis of the magnetic subbands hosting FQH states predicts non uniform quantum geometric properties far from the lowest Landau level. This points towards a more natural interpretation of these FQH states as in-field fractional Chern insulators of the magnetic subbands.

Using comprehensive exact diagonalization calculations on $\theta \approx 3.7 ^{\circ}$ twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$ ($t$MoTe$_2$), as well as idealized Landau level models also relevant for lower $\theta$, we extract general principles for engineering fractional topological insulators (FTIs) in realistic situations. First, in a Landau level setup at $\nu=1/3+1/3$, we investigate what features of the interaction destroy an FTI. For both pseudopotential interactions and realistic screened Coulomb interactions, we find that sufficient suppression of the short-range repulsion is needed for stabilizing an FTI. We then study $\theta \approx 3.7 ^{\circ}$ $t$MoTe$_2$ with realistic band-mixing and anisotropic non-local dielectric screening. Our finite-size calculations only find an FTI phase at $\nu=-4/3$ in the presence of a significant additional short-range attraction $g$ that acts to counter the Coulomb repulsion at short distances. We discuss how further finite-size drifts, dielectric engineering, Landau level character, and band-mixing effects may reduce the required value of $g$ closer towards the experimentally relevant conditions of $t$MoTe$_2$. Projective calculations into the $n=1$ Landau level, which resembles the second valence band of $\theta\simeq 2.1^\circ$ $t$MoTe$_2$, do not yield FTIs for any $g$, suggesting that FTIs at low-angle $t$MoTe$_2$ for $\nu=-8/3$ and $-10/3$ may be unlikely. While our study highlights the challenges, at least for the fillings considered, to obtaining an FTI with transport plateaus, even in large-angle $t$MoTe$_2$ where fractional Chern insulators are experimentally established, we also provide potential sample-engineering routes to improve the stability of FTI phases., Comment: 6+36 pages

Plasmon polaritons are formed by coupling light with delocalized electrons. The half-light and half-matter nature of plasmon polaritons endows them with unparalleled tunability via a range of parameters, such as dielectric environments and carrier density. Therefore, plasmon polaritons are expected to be tuned when in proximity to polar materials since the carrier density is tuned by an electrostatic potential; conversely, the plasmon polariton response might enable the sensing of polarization. Here, we use infrared nano-imaging and nano-photocurrent measurements to investigate heterostructures composed of graphene and twisted hexagonal boron nitride (t-BN), with alternating polarization in a triangular network of moir\'e stacking domains. We observe that the carrier density and the corresponding plasmonic response of graphene are modulated by polar domains in t-BN. In addition, we demonstrate that the nanometer-wide domain walls of graphene moir\'es superlattices, created by the polar domains of t-BN, provide momenta to assist the plasmonic excitations. Furthermore, our studies establish that the plasmon of graphene could function as a delicate sensor for polarization textures. The evolution of polarization textures in t-BN under uniform electric fields is tomographically examined via plasmonic imaging. Strikingly, no noticeable polarization switching is observed under applied electric fields up to 0.23 V/nm, at variance with transport reports. The recent observation of the fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect in moir\'e fractional Chern insulators (FCI) provides opportunities for investigating zero magnetic field anyons. So far, both experimental and theoretical results suggest that filling > 1/3 FCI states in the first Chern band share features with those of the lowest Landau level (LL). To create the possibility of realizing non-Abelian anyons, one route is to engineer higher flat Chern bands that mimic higher LLs. Here, we investigate the interaction, topology, and ferromagnetism of the second moir\'e miniband in twisted MoTe2 bilayer (tMoTe2). Around filling factor v = -3, i.e., half-filling of the second miniband, we uncover spontaneous ferromagnetism and an incipient Chern insulator state. By measuring the anomalous Hall effect as a function of twist angle, we find that the Chern numbers (C) of the top two moir\'e flat bands have opposite sign (C = -+1) at twist angles above 3.1{\deg} but the same sign (C = -1) around 2.6{\deg}. This observation is consistent with the recently predicted twist-angle dependent band topology, resulting from the competition between moir\'e ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity. As we increase the magnetic field, only the small twist-angle device (2.6{\deg}) experiences a topological phase transition with an emergent C = -2 state. This is attributed to a Zeeman field-induced band crossing between opposite valleys, with the determined C = -1 for the top two bands. In moir\'e materials with flat electronic bands and suitable quantum geometry, strong correlations can give rise to novel topological states of matter. The nontrivial band topology of twisted molybdenum ditelluride (tMoTe$_2$) -- responsible for its fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) states -- is predicted to arise from a layer-pseudospin skyrmion lattice. Tracing the layer polarization of wavefunctions within the moir\'e unit cell can thus offer crucial insights into the band topology. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) to probe the layer-pseudospin skyrmion textures of tMoTe$_2$. We do this by simultaneously visualizing the moir\'e lattice structure and the spatial localization of its electronic states. We find that the wavefunctions associated with the topological flat bands exhibit a spatially-dependent layer polarization within the moir\'e unit cell. This is in excellent agreement with our theoretical modeling, thereby revealing a direct microscopic connection between the structural properties of tMoTe$_2$ and its band topology. In the absence of time reversal symmetry, orbital magnetization provides a sensitive probe of topology and interactions, with particularly rich phenomenology in Chern insulators where topological edge states carry large equilibrium currents. Here, we use a nanoscale superconducting sensor to map the magnetic fringe fields in twisted bilayers of MoTe$_2$, where transport and optical sensing experiments have revealed the formation of fractional Chern insulator (FCI) states at zero magnetic field. At a temperature of 1.6K, we observe oscillations in the local magnetic field associated with fillings $\nu=-1,-2/3,-3/5,-4/7$ and $-5/9$ of the first moir\'e hole band, consistent with the formation of FCIs at these fillings. By quantitatively reconstructing the magnetization, we determine the local thermodynamic gaps of the most robust FCI state at $\nu=-2/3$, finding $^{-2/3}\Delta$ as large as 7 meV. Spatial mapping of the charge density- and displacement field-tuned magnetic phase diagram further allows us to characterize sample disorder, which we find to be dominated by both inhomogeneity in the effective unit cell area as well as inhomogeneity in the band edge offset and bound dipole moment. Our results highlight both the challenges posed by structural disorder in the study of twisted homobilayer moir\'e systems and the opportunities afforded by the remarkably robust nature of the underlying correlated topological states.

Moir\'e materials host a wealth of intertwined correlated and topological states of matter, all arising from flat electronic bands with nontrivial quantum geometry. A prominent example is the family of alternating-twist magic-angle graphene stacks, which exhibit symmetry-broken states at rational fillings of the moir\'e band and superconductivity close to half filling. Here, we introduce a second family of twisted graphene multilayers made up of twisted sheets of $M$- and $N$-layer Bernal-stacked graphene flakes. Calculations indicate that applying an electric displacement field isolates a flat and topological moir\'e conduction band that is primarily localized to a single graphene sheet below the moir\'e interface. Phenomenologically, the result is a striking similarity in the hierarchies of symmetry-broken phases across this family of twisted graphene multilayers. Fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) is a prime example of topological quantum many-body phenomena, arising from the interplay between strong electron correlation, topological order, and time reversal symmetry breaking. Recently, a lattice analog of FQHE at zero magnetic field has been observed, confirming the existence of a zero-field fractional Chern insulator (FCI). Despite this, the bulk-edge correspondence -- a hallmark of FCI featuring an insulating bulk with conductive edges -- has not been directly observed. In fact, this correspondence has not been visualized in any system for fractional states due to experimental challenges. Here we report the imaging of FCI edge states in twisted MoTe2 by employing a newly developed modality of microwave-impedance microscopy. By tuning the carrier density, we observe the system evolving between metallic and FCI states, the latter of which exhibits insulating bulk and conductive edges as expected from bulk-boundary correspondence. We also observe the evolution of edge states across the topological phase transition from an incompressible Chern insulator state to a metal and finally to a putative charge ordered insulating state as a function of interlayer electric field. The local measurement further reveals tantalizing prospects of neighboring domains with different fractional orders. These findings pave the way for research into topologically protected 1D interfaces between various anyonic states at zero magnetic field, such as topological entanglement entropy, Halperin-Laughlin interfaces, and the creation of non-abelian anyons.

Uniaxial strain has been widely used as a powerful tool for investigating and controlling the properties of quantum materials. However, existing strain techniques have so far mostly been limited to use with bulk crystals. Although recent progress has been made in extending the application of strain to two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, these techniques have been limited to optical characterization and extremely simple electrical device geometries. Here, we report a piezoelectric-based \textit{in situ} uniaxial strain technique enabling simultaneous electrical transport and optical spectroscopy characterization of dual-gated vdW heterostructure devices. Critically, our technique remains compatible with vdW heterostructure devices of arbitrary complexity fabricated on conventional silicon/silicon dioxide wafer substrates. We demonstrate a large and continuously tunable strain of up to $-0.15\%$ at millikelvin temperatures, with larger strain values also likely achievable. We quantify the strain transmission from the silicon wafer to the vdW heterostructure, and further demonstrate the ability of strain to modify the electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene. Van der Waals (vdW) structures of two-dimensional materials host a broad range of physical phenomena. New opportunities arise if different functional layers may be remotely modulated or coupled in a device structure. Here we demonstrate the in-situ coherent modulation of moir\'e excitons and correlated Mott insulators in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) homo- or hetero-bilayers with on-chip terahertz (THz) waves. Using common dual-gated device structures, each consisting of a TMD moir\'e bilayer sandwiched between two few-layer graphene (fl-Gr) gates with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) spacers, we launch coherent phonon wavepackets at ~0.4-1 THz from the fl-Gr gates by femtosecond laser excitation. The waves travel through the h-BN spacer, arrive at the TMD bilayer with precise timing, and coherently modulate the moir\'e excitons or the Mott states. These results demonstrate that the fl-Gr gates, often used for electrical control of the material properties, can serve as effective on-chip opto-elastic transducers to generate THz waves for the coherent control and vibrational entanglement of functional layers in commonly used moir\'e devices., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 12 pages SI. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2307.16563

The antiferromagnetic layered compound EuCd$_2$As$_2$ is widely considered as a leading candidate of ideal Weyl semimetal, featuring a single pair of Weyl nodes in its field-induced ferromagnetic (FM) state. Nevertheless, this view has recently been challenged by an optical spectroscopy study, which suggests that it is a magnetic semiconductor. In this study, we have successfully synthesized highly insulating EuCd$_2$As$_2$ crystals with carrier density reaching as low as $2\times 10^{15}$ $\text{cm}^{-3}$. The magneto-transport measurements revealed a progressive decrease of the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) by several orders of magnitude as the carrier density decreases. This behavior contradicts with what is expected from the intrinsic AHC generated by the Weyl points, which is independent of carrier density as the Fermi level approaches the charge neutrality point. In contrast, the scaling relationship between AHC and longitudinal conductivity aligns with the characteristics of variable range hopping insulators. Our results suggest that EuCd$_2$As$_2$ is a magnetic semiconductor rather than a topological Weyl semimetal.

When two different electronic materials are brought together, the resultant interface often shows unexpected quantum phenomena, including interfacial superconductivity and Fu-Kane topological superconductivity (TSC). Here, we use molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to synthesize heterostructures formed by stacking together two magnetic materials, a ferromagnetic topological insulator (TI) and an antiferromagnetic iron chalcogenide (FeTe). We discover emergent interface-induced superconductivity in these heterostructures and demonstrate the trifecta occurrence of superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and topological band structure in the magnetic TI layer, the three essential ingredients of chiral TSC. The unusual coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity can be attributed to the high upper critical magnetic field that exceeds the Pauli paramagnetic limit for conventional superconductors at low temperatures. The magnetic TI/FeTe heterostructures with robust superconductivity and atomically sharp interfaces provide an ideal wafer-scale platform for the exploration of chiral TSC and Majorana physics, constituting an important step toward scalable topological quantum computation., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. Stacking monolayer semiconductors results in moir\'e patterns that host many correlated and topological electronic phenomena, but measurements of the basic electronic structure underpinning these phenomena are scarce. Here, we investigate the properties of the conduction band in moir\'e heterobilayers using submicron angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with electrostatic gating, focusing on the example of WS2/WSe2. We find that at all twist angles the conduction band edge is the K-point valley of the WS2, with a band gap of 1.58 +- 0.03 eV. By resolving the conduction band dispersion, we observe an unexpectedly small effective mass of 0.15 +- 0.02 m_e. In addition, we observe replicas of the conduction band displaced by reciprocal lattice vectors of the moir\'e superlattice. We present arguments and evidence that the replicas are due to modification of the conduction band states by the moir\'e potential rather than to final-state diffraction. Interestingly, the replicas display an intensity pattern with reduced, 3-fold symmetry, which we show implicates the pseudo vector potential associated with in-plane strain in moir\'e band formation., Comment: Main text: 12 pages, 4 figures. Topological properties in quantum materials are often governed by symmetry and tuned by crystal structure and external fields, and hence symmetry-sensitive nonlinear optical measurements in a magnetic field are a valuable probe. Here we report nonlinear magneto-optical second harmonic generation (SHG) studies of non-magnetic topological materials including bilayer WTe2, monolayer WSe2 and bulk TaAs. The polarization-resolved patterns of optical SHG under magnetic field show nonlinear Kerr rotation in these time-reversal symmetric materials. For materials with three-fold rotational symmetric lattice structure, the SHG polarization pattern rotates just slightly in a magnetic field, whereas in those with mirror or two-fold rotational symmetry the SHG polarization pattern rotates greatly and distorts. These different magneto-SHG characters can be understood by considering the superposition of the magnetic field-induced time-noninvariant nonlinear optical tensor and the crystal-structure-based time-invariant counterpart. The situation is further clarified by scrutinizing the Faraday rotation, whose subtle interplay with crystal symmetry accounts for the diverse behavior of the extrinsic nonlinear Kerr rotation in different materials. Our work illustrates the application of magneto-SHG techniques to directly probe nontrivial topological properties, and underlines the importance of minimizing extrinsic nonlinear Kerr rotation in polarization-resolved magneto-optical studies., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures

Ferroelectricity, a spontaneous and reversible electric polarization, is found in certain classes of van der Waals (vdW) material heterostructures. The discovery of ferroelectricity in twisted vdW layers provides new opportunities to engineer spatially dependent electric and optical properties associated with the configuration of moir\'e superlattice domains and the network of domain walls. Here, we employ near-field infrared nano-imaging and nano-photocurrent measurements to study ferroelectricity in minimally twisted WSe2. The ferroelectric domains are visualized through the imaging of the plasmonic response in a graphene monolayer adjacent to the moir\'e WSe2 bilayers. Specifically, we find that the ferroelectric polarization in moir\'e domains is imprinted on the plasmonic response of the graphene. Complementary nano-photocurrent measurements demonstrate that the optoelectronic properties of graphene are also modulated by the proximal ferroelectric domains. Our approach represents an alternative strategy for studying moir\'e ferroelectricity at native length scales and opens promising prospects for (opto)electronic devices., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

Niobium halides, Nb3X8 (X = Cl,Br,I), which are predicted two-dimensional magnets, have recently gotten attention due to their breathing kagome geometry. Here, we have studied the electronic structure of Nb3Br8 by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles calculations. ARPES results depict the presence of multiple flat and weakly dispersing bands. These bands are well explained by the theoretical calculations, which show they have Nb d character indicating their origination from the Nb atoms forming the breathing kagome plane. This van der Waals material can be easily thinned down via mechanical exfoliation to the ultrathin limit and such ultrathin samples are stable as depicted from the time-dependent Raman spectroscopy measurements at room temperature. These results demonstrate that Nb3Br8 is an excellent material not only for studying breathing kagome induced flat band physics and its connection with magnetism, but also for heterostructure fabrication for application purposes., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, Supplemental Material included

Electronic nematicity, a state in which rotational symmetry is spontaneously broken, has become a familiar characteristic of many strongly correlated materials. One widely studied example is the discovered Ising-nematicity and its interplay with superconductivity in tetragonal iron pnictides. Since nematic directors in crystalline solids are restricted by the underlying crystal symmetry, recently identified quantum material systems with three-fold rotational (C$_3$) symmetry offer a new platform to investigate nematic order with three-state Potts character. Here, we report reversible strain control of the three-state Potts nematicity in a zigzag antiferromagnetic insulator, FePSe$_3$. Probing the nematicity via optical linear dichroism, we demonstrate either $2{\pi}/3$ or ${\pi}/2$ rotation of nematic director by uniaxial strain. The nature of the nematic phase transition can also be controlled such that it undergoes a smooth crossover transition, a Potts nematic transition, or a Ising nematic flop transition. Further elastocaloric measurements demonstrate signatures of two coupled phase transitions, indicating that the nematic phase is a vestigial order arose from the antiferromagnetism. The ability to tune the nematic order with in-situ strain further enables the extraction of nematic susceptibility, which exhibits a divergent behavior near the magnetic ordering temperature that is corroborated with both linear dichroism and elastocaloric measurements. The integer quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is a lattice analog of the quantum Hall effect at zero magnetic field. This striking transport phenomenon occurs in electronic systems with topologically nontrivial bands and spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. Discovery of its putative fractional counterpart in the presence of strong electron correlations, i.e., the fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) effect, would open a new chapter in condensed matter physics. Here, we report the direct observation of both integer and fractional QAH effects in electrical measurements on twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$. At zero magnetic field, near filling factor $\nu = -1$ (one hole per moir\'e unit cell) we see an extended integer QAH plateau in the Hall resistance $R_\text{xy}$ that is quantized to $h/e^2 \pm 0.1 \%$ while the longitudinal resistance $R_\text{xx}$ vanishes. Remarkably, at $\nu=-2/3$ and $-3/5$ we see plateau features in $R_\text{xy}$ at $3h/2e^2 \pm 1\%$ and $5h/3e^2 \pm 3\%$, respectively, while $R_\text{xx}$ remains small. All these features shift linearly in an applied magnetic field with slopes matching the corresponding Chern numbers $-1$, $-2/3$, and $-3/5$, precisely as expected for integer and fractional QAH states. In addition, at zero magnetic field, $R_\text{xy}$ is approximately $2h/e^2$ near half filling ($\nu = -1/2$) and varies linearly as $\nu$ is tuned. Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are three-dimensional topological materials that exhibit fascinating properties due to the presence of Weyl nodes in their band structure. However, existing WSMs discovered so far often possess multiple pairs of Weyl nodes, posing a challenge in disentangling the contributions to transport phenomena from different energy bands. To overcome this challenge, we have identified field-induced ferromagnetic MnBi$_{2-x}$Sb$_{x}$Te$_{4}$ as an ideal type-II WSM with a single pair of Weyl nodes. By employing a combination of quantum oscillations and high-field Hall measurements, we have resolved the evolution of Fermi-surface sections as the Fermi level is tuned across the charge neutrality point, precisely matching the band structure of an ideal type-II WSM. Furthermore, the anomalous Hall conductivity exhibits a heartbeat-like behavior as the Fermi level is tuned across the Weyl nodes, a unique feature previously predicted for a type-II WSM. Our findings establish MnBi$_{2-x}$Sb$_{x}$Te$_{4}$ as an ideal platform for further investigation into Weyl physics.

A recent experiment has reported the first observation of a zero-field fractional Chern insulator (FCI) phase in twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$ moir\'e superlattices [Nature 622, 63-68 (2023)]. The experimental observation is at an unexpected large twist angle 3.7$^\circ$ and calls for a better understanding of the FCI in real materials. In this work, we perform large-scale density functional theory calculation for the twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$, and find that lattice reconstruction is crucial for the appearance of an isolated flat Chern band. The existence of the FCI state at $\nu = -2/3$ are confirmed by exact diagonalization. We establish phase diagrams with respect to the twist angle and electron interaction, which reveal an optimal twist angle of $3.5^\circ$ for the observation of FCI. We further demonstrate that an external electric field can destroy the FCI state by changing band geometry and show evidence of the $\nu=-3/5$ FCI state in this system. Our research highlights the importance of accurate single particle band structure in the quest for strong correlated electronic states and provides insights into engineering fractional Chern insulator in moir\'e superlattices.

The interplay between spontaneous symmetry breaking and topology can result in exotic quantum states of matter. A celebrated example is the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state, which exhibits an integer quantum Hall effect at zero magnetic field thanks to its intrinsic ferromagnetism. In the presence of strong electron-electron interactions, exotic fractional-QAH (FQAH) states at zero magnetic field can emerge. These states could host fractional excitations, including non-Abelian anyons - crucial building blocks for topological quantum computation. Flat Chern bands are widely considered as a desirable venue to realize the FQAH state. For this purpose, twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers in rhombohedral stacking have recently been predicted to be a promising material platform. Here, we report experimental signatures of FQAH states in 3.7-degree twisted MoTe2 bilayer. Magnetic circular dichroism measurements reveal robust ferromagnetic states at fractionally hole filled moir\'e minibands. Using trion photoluminescence as a sensor, we obtain a Landau fan diagram which shows linear shifts in carrier densities corresponding to the v=-2/3 and -3/5 ferromagnetic states with applied magnetic field. These shifts match the Streda formula dispersion of FQAH states with fractionally quantized Hall conductance of -2/3$e^2/h$ and -3/5$e^2/h$, respectively. Moreover, the v=-1 state exhibits a dispersion corresponding to Chern number -1, consistent with the predicted QAH state. In comparison, several non-ferromagnetic states on the electron doping side do not disperse, i.e., are trivial correlated insulators. The observed topological states can be further electrically driven into topologically trivial states. Understanding quantum many-body systems is at the heart of condensed matter physics. The ability to control the underlying lattice geometry of a system, and thus its many-body interactions, would enable the realization of and transition between emergent quantum ground states. Here, we report in-situ gate switching between honeycomb and triangular lattice geometries of an electron many-body Hamiltonian in R-stacked MoTe2 moir\'e bilayers, resulting in switchable magnetic exchange interactions. At zero electric field, we observe a correlated ferromagnetic insulator near one hole per moir\'e unit cell ({\nu}=-1), i.e., a quarter-filled honeycomb lattice, with a widely tunable Curie temperature up to 14K. Fully polarizing layer pseudospin via electric field switches the system into a half-filled triangular lattice with antiferromagnetic interactions. Further doping this layer-polarized superlattice introduces carriers into the empty layer, tuning the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction back to ferromagnetic. Moir\'e excitons are emergent optical excitations in 2D semiconductors with deep moir\'e superlattice potentials. While these excitations have been realized in several platforms, a system with dynamically tunable moir\'e potential to tailor the moir\'e exciton properties is yet to be realized. Here, we present a continuously tunable moir\'e potential in a monolayer WSe2 that is enabled by its proximity to twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) near the magic-angle. Due to its flat electronic bands, charge distribution is highly localized and forms a triangular lattice in TBG. Tuning the local charge density via electrostatic gating, TBG thus provides a spatially varying and dynamically tunable dielectric superlattice for modulating monolayer exciton wavefunctions. By performing optical reflection spectroscopy, we observe emergent moir\'e exciton Rydberg branches in monolayer WSe2 with increased energy splitting upon doping TBG. The twist-angle dependence reveals that the observation is due to a hybridization between bright and dark Rydberg states enabled by the moir\'e potential. Further, at the magic-angle near 1.1{\deg}, the moir\'e Rydberg excitons form a sawtooth pattern with doping owing to the formation of strongly correlated states in the TBG. Our study provides a new platform for engineering moir\'e excitons as well as optical accessibility to the electronic states with small correlation gaps in TBG.

Engineering the coupling between fundamental quantum excitations is at the heart of quantum science and technologies. A significant case is the creation of quantum light sources in which coupling between single photons and phonons can be controlled and harnessed to enable quantum information transduction. Here, we report the deterministic creation of quantum emitters featuring highly tunable coupling between excitons and phonons. The quantum emitters are formed in strain-induced quantum dots created in homobilayer semiconductor WSe2. The colocalization of quantum confined interlayer excitons and THz interlayer breathing mode phonons, which directly modulate the exciton energy, leads to a uniquely strong phonon coupling to single-photon emission. The single-photon spectrum of interlayer exciton emission features a single-photon purity >83% and multiple phonon replicas, each heralding the creation of a phonon Fock state in the quantum emitter. Owing to the vertical dipole moment of the interlayer exciton, the phonon-photon interaction is electrically tunable in a wide range, promising to reach the strong coupling regime. Our result demonstrates a new type of solid-state quantum excitonic-optomechanical system at the atomic interface that emits flying photonic qubits coupled with stationary phonons, which could be exploited for quantum transduction and interconnection., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

The exciton polariton (EP), a half-light and half-matter quasiparticle, is potentially an important element for future photonic and quantum technologies. It provides both strong light-matter interactions and long-distance propagation that is necessary for applications associated with energy or information transfer. Recently, strongly-coupled cavity EPs at room temperature have been demonstrated in van der Waals (vdW) materials due to their strongly-bound excitons. Here we report a nano-optical imaging study of waveguide EPs in MoSe2, a prototypical vdW semiconductor. The measured propagation length of the EPs is sensitive to the excitation photon energy and reaches over 12 {\mu}m. The polariton wavelength can be conveniently altered from 600 nm down to 300 nm by controlling the waveguide thickness. Furthermore, we found an intriguing mode back-bending dispersion close to the exciton resonance. The observed EPs in vdW semiconductors could be useful in future nanophotonic circuits operating in the near-infrared to visible spectral regions., Comment: 21 pages

Controlling quantum materials with light is of fundamental and technological importance. By utilizing the strong coupling of light and matter in optical cavities (1-3), recent studies were able to modify some of their most defining features (4-6). In this work, we study the magneto-optical properties of a van der Waals magnet that supports strong coupling of photons and excitons even in the absence of external cavity mirrors. In this material - the layered magnetic semiconductor CrSBr - emergent light-matter hybrids called polaritons are shown to significantly increase the spectral bandwidth of correlations between the magnetic, electronic, and optical properties, enabling largely tunable optical responses to applied magnetic fields and magnons. Our results highlight the importance of exciton-photon self-hybridization in van der Waals magnets and motivate novel directions for the manipulation of quantum material properties by strong light-matter coupling.

The magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) is a backbone device for spintronics. Realizing next generation energy efficient MTJs will require operating mechanisms beyond the standard means of applying magnetic fields or large electrical currents. Here, we demonstrate a new concept for programmable MTJ operation via strain control of the magnetic states of CrSBr, a layered antiferromagnetic semiconductor used as the tunnel barrier. Switching the CrSBr from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic order generates a giant tunneling magnetoresistance ratio without external magnetic field at temperatures up to ~ 140 K. When the static strain is set near the phase transition, applying small strain pulses leads to active flipping of layer magnetization with controlled layer number and thus magnetoresistance states. Further, finely adjusting the static strain to a critical value turns on stochastic switching between metastable states, with a strain-tunable sigmoidal response curve akin to the stochastic binary neuron. Our results highlight the potential of strain-programmable van der Waals MTJs towards spintronic applications, such as magnetic memory, random number generation, and probabilistic and neuromorphic computing.

Monolayer semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides possess broken inversion symmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling, which leads to unique spin-valley locking effect. In 2H stacked pristine multilayers, the spin-valley locking yields an electronic superlattice structure, where alternating layers correspond to barrier and quantum well respectively, conditioned on the spin-valley indices. Here, we show that the spin-valley locked superlattice hosts a new kind of dipolar excitons with the electron and hole constituents separated in an every-other-layer configuration, i.e., either in two even or two odd layers. Such excitons become optically bright via hybridization with intralayer excitons, displaying multiple anti-crossing patterns in optical reflection spectrum as the dipolar exciton is tuned through the intralayer resonance by electric field. The reflectance spectra also reveal an excited state orbital of the every-other-layer exciton, pointing to a sizable binding energy in the same order of magnitude as the intralayer exciton. As layer thickness increases, the dipolar exciton can form one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard chain displaying a layer number dependent fine-structures in the reflectance spectra. Our work reveals a distinct valleytronic superlattice with highly tunable dipolar excitons for exploring light-matter interactions.

MnBi2Te4 is a van der Waals topological insulator with intrinsic intralayer ferromagnetic exchange and A-type antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling. Theoretically, it belongs to a class of structurally centrosymmetric crystals whose layered antiferromagnetic order breaks inversion symmetry for even layer numbers, making optical second harmonic generation (SHG) an ideal probe of the coupling between the crystal and magnetic structures. Here, we perform magnetic field and temperature-dependent SHG measurements on MnBi2Te4 flakes ranging from bulk to monolayer thickness. We find that the dominant SHG signal from MnBi2Te4 is unexpectedly unrelated to both magnetic state and layer number. We suggest that surface SHG is the likely source of the observed strong SHG, whose symmetry matches that of the MnBi2Te4-vacuum interface. Our results highlight the importance of considering the surface contribution to inversion symmetry-breaking in van der Waals centrosymmetric magnets.

One-dimensional (1D) topologically protected states are usually formed at the interface between two-dimensional (2D) materials with different topological invariants. Therefore, 1D chiral interface channels (CICs) can be created at the boundary of two quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators with different Chern numbers. Such a QAH junction can function as a chiral edge current distributer at zero magnetic field, but its realization remains challenging. Here, by employing an in-situ mechanical mask, we use molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to synthesize QAH insulator junctions, in which two QAH insulators with different Chern numbers are connected along a 1D junction. For the junction between C = 1 and C = -1 QAH insulators, we observe quantized transport and demonstrate the appearance of the two parallel propagating CICs along the magnetic domain wall at zero magnetic field. Moreover, since the Chern number of the QAH insulators in magnetic topological insulator (TI)/TI multilayers can be tuned by altering magnetic TI/TI bilayer periods, the junction between two QAH insulators with arbitrary Chern numbers can be achieved by growing different periods of magnetic TI/TI on the two sides of the sample. For the junction between C = 1 and C = 2 QAH insulators, our quantized transport shows that a single CIC appears at the interface. The interaction between distinct excitations in solids is of both fundamental interest and technological importance. One example of such interactions is coupling between an exciton, a Coulomb bound electron-hole pair, and a magnon, a collective spin excitation. The recent emergence of van der Waals magnetic semiconductors provides a powerful platform for exploring these exciton-magnon interactions and their fundamental properties, such as strong correlation, as well as their photo-spintronic and quantum transduction applications. Here we demonstrate precise control of coherent exciton-magnon interactions in the layered magnetic semiconductor CrSBr. We show that by controlling the direction of applied magnetic fields relative to the crystal axes, and thus the rotational symmetry of the magnetic system, we can tune not only the exciton coupling to the bright magnon, but also to an optically dark mode via magnon hybridization. The exciton-magnon coupling and associated magnon dispersion curves can be further modulated by applying a uniaxial strain. At the critical strain, a dispersionless dark magnon band emerges. Our results demonstrate unprecedented control of the opto-mechanical-magnonic coupling, and a step towards the predictable and controllable implementation of hybrid quantum magnonics.

Plasmon polaritons in van der Waals (vdW) materials hold promise for next-generation photonics. The ability to deterministically imprint spatial patterns of high carrier density in cavities and circuitry with nanoscale features underlies future progress in nonlinear nanophotonics and strong light-matter interactions. Here, we demonstrate a general strategy to atomically imprint low-loss graphene plasmonic structures using oxidation-activated charge transfer (OCT). We cover graphene with a monolayer of WSe$_2$, which is subsequently oxidized into high work-function WOx to activate charge transfer. Nano-infrared imaging reveals low-loss plasmon polaritons at the WOx/graphene interface. We insert WSe$_2$ spacers to precisely control the OCT-induced carrier density and achieve a near-intrinsic quality factor of plasmons. Finally, we imprint canonical plasmonic cavities exhibiting laterally abrupt doping profiles with single-digit nanoscale precision via programmable OCT. Specifically, we demonstrate technologically appealing but elusive plasmonic whispering-gallery resonators based on free-standing graphene encapsulated in WOx. Excitons, Coulomb-bound electron-hole pairs, play a fundamental role in both optical excitation and correlated phenomena in solids. When an exciton interacts with other quasi-particles, few- and many-body excited states, such as trions, exciton Fermi-polarons, Mahan excitons can appear. Here, we report a new interaction between exciton and charges enabled by unusual quantum confinement in 2D moir\'e superlattices, which results in novel exciton many-body ground states composed of moir\'e excitons and correlated electron lattices. Unique to H-stacked (or 60o-twisted) WS2/WSe2 heterobilayer, we found that the interlayer atomic registry and moir\'e structural reconstruction leads to an interlayer moir\'e exciton (IME) whose hole in one layer is surrounded by its partner electron's wavefunction spread among three adjacent moir\'e traps in the other layer. This 3D excitonic structure can enable large in-plane electrical quadrupole moments in addition to the vertical dipole. Upon doping, the electric quadrupole facilitates the binding of IME to the charges in neighboring moir\'e cells, forming an intercell charged exciton complex. The exciton complex is unveiled by the IME photoluminescence energy jumps when the electron lattices form at both fractional and integer-filled moir\'e minibands, with replica-like spectral features between successive integer moir\'e fillings. Our work provides the framework in understanding and engineering emergent exciton many-body states in correlated moir\'e charge orders.

The extreme versatility of two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials derives from their ability to exhibit new electronic properties when assembled in proximity with dissimilar crystals. For example, although graphene is inherently non-magnetic, recent work has reported a magnetic proximity effect in graphene interfaced with magnetic substrates, potentially enabling a pathway towards achieving a high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall effect. Here, we investigate heterostructures of graphene and chromium trihalide magnetic insulators (CrI$_3$, CrBr$_3$, and CrCl$_3$). Surprisingly, we are unable to detect a magnetic exchange field in the graphene, but instead discover proximity effects featuring unprecedented gate-tunability. The graphene becomes highly hole-doped due to charge transfer from the neighboring magnetic insulator, and further exhibits a variety of atypical transport features. These include highly extended quantum Hall plateaus, abrupt reversals in the Landau level filling sequence, and hysteresis over at least days-long time scales. In the case of CrI$_3$, we are able to completely suppress the charge transfer and all attendant atypical transport effects by gating. The charge transfer can additionally be altered in a first-order phase transition upon switching the magnetic states of the nearest CrI$_3$ layers. Our results provide a roadmap for exploiting the magnetic proximity effect in graphene, and motivate further experiments with other magnetic insulators., Comment: 24 pages, 22 figures

Kagome materials have become solid grounds to study the interplay among geometry, topology, correlation, and magnetism. Recently, semiconductors Nb3X8(X = Cl, Br, I) have been predicted to be two-dimensional (2D) magnets and importantly these materials possess breathing kagome geometry. Electronic structure study of these promising materials is still lacking. Here, we report the spectroscopic evidence of at and weakly dispersing bands in breathing-kagome semiconductor Nb3I8 around 500 meV binding energy, which is well supported by our first-principles calculations. These bands originate from the breathing kagome lattice of Niobium atoms and have Nb d character. They are found to be sensitive to polarization of the incident photon beam. Many-body interactions between carriers lie at the heart of correlated physics. The ability to tune such interactions would open the possibility to access and control complex electronic phase diagrams on demand. Recently, moir\'e superlattices formed by two-dimensional materials have emerged as a promising platform for quantum engineering such phenomena. The power of the moir\'e system lies in the high tunability of its physical parameters by tweaking layer twist angle, electrical field, moir\'e carrier filling, and interlayer coupling. Here, we report that optical excitation can drastically tune the spin-spin interactions between moir\'e trapped carriers, resulting in ferromagnetic order in WS2/WSe2 moir\'e superlattices over a small range of doping at elevated temperatures. Near the filling factor v = -1/3 (i.e., one hole per three moir\'e unit cells), as the excitation power at the exciton resonance increases, a well-developed hysteresis loop emerges in the reflective magnetic circular dichroism (RMCD) signal as a function of magnetic field, a hallmark of ferromagnetism. The hysteresis loop persists down to charge neutrality, and its shape evolves as the moir\'e superlattice is gradually filled, indicating changes of magnetic ground state properties. The observed phenomenon points to a mechanism in which itinerant photo-excited excitons mediate exchange coupling between moir\'e trapped holes. This exciton-mediated interaction can be of longer range than direct coupling between moir\'e trapped holes, and thus magnetic order can arise even in the dilute hole regime under optical excitation. This discovery adds a new and dynamic tuning knob to the rich many-body Hamiltonian of moir\'e quantum matter.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are regarded as a possible materials platform for quantum information science and related device applications. In TMD monolayers, the dephasing time and inhomogeneity are crucial parameters for any quantum information application. In TMD heterostructures, coupling strength and interlayer exciton lifetimes are also parameters of interest. However, many demonstrations in TMDs can only be realized at specific spots on the sample, presenting a challenge to the scalability of these applications. Here, using multi-dimensional coherent imaging spectroscopy (MDCIS), we shed light on the underlying physics - including dephasing, inhomogeneity, and strain - for a MoSe$_2$ monolayer and identify both promising and unfavorable areas for quantum information applications. We furthermore apply the same technique to a MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructure. Despite the notable presence of strain and dielectric environment changes, coherent and incoherent coupling, as well as interlayer exciton lifetimes are mostly robust across the sample. This uniformity is despite a significantly inhomogeneous interlayer exciton photoluminescence distribution that suggests a bad sample for device applications. This robustness strengthens the case for TMDs as a next-generation materials platform in quantum information science and beyond.

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic semiconductors feature both tightly-bound excitons with large oscillator strength and potentially long-lived coherent magnons due to the presence of bandgap and spatial confinement. While magnons and excitons are energetically mismatched by orders of magnitude, their coupling can lead to efficient optical access to spin information. Here we report strong magnon-exciton coupling in the 2D van der Waals (vdW) antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor CrSBr. Coherent magnons launched by above-gap excitation modulate the interlayer hybridization, which leads to dynamic modulation of excitonic energies. Time-resolved exciton sensing reveals magnons that can coherently travel beyond 7 micrometer, with coherence time above 5 ns. We observe this exciton-coupled coherent magnons in both even and odd number of layers, with and without compensated magnetization, down to the bilayer limit. In monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, many-body correlations can manifest in optical spectra when photoexcited electron-hole pairs (excitons) are introduced into a 2D Fermi sea of mobile carriers. At low carrier densities, the formation of positively and negatively charged excitons ($X^\pm$) is well documented. However, in WSe$_2$ monolayers, an additional absorption resonance, often called $X^{-\prime}$, emerges at high electron density. Its origin is not understood. Here we investigate the $X^{-\prime}$ state via polarized absorption spectroscopy of electrostatically-gated WSe$_2$ monolayers in high magnetic fields to 60~T. Field-induced filling and emptying of the lowest optically-active Landau level in the $K'$ valley causes repeated quenching of the corresponding optical absorption. Surprisingly, however, these quenchings are accompanied by absorption changes to higher-lying Landau levels in both $K'$ and $K$ valleys, which are unoccupied. A topological insulator (TI) interfaced with an s-wave superconductor has been predicted to host an unusual form of superconductivity known as topological superconductivity (TSC). Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has been the primary approach in the scalable synthesis of the TI/superconductor heterostructures. Although the growth of epitaxial TI films on s-wave superconductors has been achieved, it remains an outstanding challenge for synthesizing atomically thin TI/superconductor heterostructures, which are critical for engineering the TSC phase. Here, we used MBE to grow Bi2Se3 films with the controlled thickness on monolayer NbSe2 and performed in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ex-situ magneto-transport measurements on these Bi2Se3/monolayer NbSe2 heterostructures. We found that the emergence of Rashba-type bulk quantum well bands and spin-nondegenerate surface states coincides with a marked suppression of the in-plane upper critical magnetic field of the superconductivity in Bi2Se3/monolayer NbSe2 heterostructures. This is the signature of a crossover from Ising- to Rashba-type superconducting pairings, induced by altering Bi2Se3 film thickness. Twisted double bilayer graphene (tDBG) has emerged as an especially rich platform for studying strongly correlated and topological states of matter. The material features moir\'e bands that can be continuously deformed by both perpendicular displacement field and twist angle. Here, we construct a phase diagram representing of the correlated and topological states as a function of these parameters, based on measurements on over a dozen tDBG devices encompassing the two distinct stacking configurations in which the constituent Bernal bilayer graphene sheets are rotated either slightly away from 0{\deg} or 60{\deg}. We find a hierarchy of symmetry-broken states that emerge sequentially as the twist angle approaches an apparent optimal value of $\theta \approx$ 1.34{\deg}. Among them, we discover a sequence of symmetry-broken Chern insulator (SBCI) states that arise only within a narrow range of twist angles ($\approx$ 1.33{\deg} to 1.39{\deg}). We observe an associated anomalous Hall effect at zero field in all samples supporting SBCI states, indicating spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking and possible moir\'e unit cell enlargement at zero magnetic field., Comment: 42 pages

Excitons are elementary optical excitation in semiconductors. The ability to manipulate and transport these quasiparticles would enable excitonic circuits and devices for quantum photonic technologies. Recently, interlayer excitons in 2D semiconductors have emerged as a promising candidate for engineering excitonic devices due to their long lifetime, large exciton binding energy, and gate tunability. However, the charge-neutral nature of the excitons leads to weak response to the in-plane electric field and thus inhibits transport beyond the diffusion length. Here, we demonstrate the directional transport of interlayer excitons in bilayer WSe2 driven by the propagating potential traps induced by surface acoustic waves (SAW). We show that at 100 K, the SAW-driven excitonic transport is activated above a threshold acoustic power and reaches 20 mm, a distance at least ten times longer than the diffusion length and only limited by the device size. Temperature-dependent measurement reveals the transition from the diffusion-limited regime at low temperature to the acoustic field-driven regime at elevated temperature. Our work shows that acoustic waves are an effective, contact-free means to control exciton dynamics and transport, promising for realizing 2D materials-based excitonic devices such as exciton transistors, switches, and transducers up to room temperature., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

The interplay between band topology and magnetism can give rise to exotic states of matter. For example, magnetically doped topological insulators can realize a Chern insulator that exhibits quantized Hall resistance at zero magnetic field. While prior works have focused on ferromagnetic systems, little is known about band topology and its manipulation in antiferromagnets. Here, we report that MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is a rare platform for realizing a canted-antiferromagnetic (cAFM) Chern insulator with electrical control. We show that the Chern insulator state with Chern number $C = 1$ appears as soon as the AFM to canted-AFM phase transition happens. The Chern insulator state is further confirmed by observing the unusual transition of the $C = 1$ state in the cAFM phase to the $C = 2$ orbital quantum Hall states in the magnetic field induced ferromagnetic phase. Near the cAFM-AFM phase boundary, we show that the Chern number can be toggled on and off by applying an electric field alone. We attribute this switching effect to the electrical field tuning of the exchange gap alignment between the top and bottom surfaces. A central theme in condensed matter physics is to create and understand the exotic states of matter by incorporating magnetism into topological materials. One prime example is the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state. Recently, MnBi2Te4 has been demonstrated to be an intrinsic magnetic topological insulator and the QAH effect was observed in exfoliated MnBi2Te4 flakes. Here, we used molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to grow MnBi2Te4 films with thickness down to 1 septuple layer (SL) and performed thickness-dependent transport measurements. We observed a non-square hysteresis loop in the antiferromagnetic state for films with thickness greater than 2 SL. The hysteresis loop can be separated into two AH components. Through careful analysis, we demonstrated that one AH component with the larger coercive field is from the dominant MnBi2Te4 phase, while the other AH component with the smaller coercive field is from the minor Mn-doped Bi2Te3 phase in the samples. The extracted AH component of the MnBi2Te4 phase shows a clear even-odd layer-dependent behavior, a signature of antiferromagnetic thin films. Coherent coupling between excitons is at the heart of many-body interactions with transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterostructures as an emergent platform for the investigation of these interactions. We employ multi-dimensional coherent spectroscopy on monolayer MoSe\textsubscript{2}/WSe\textsubscript{2} heterostructures and observe coherent coupling between excitons spatially localized in monolayer MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$. Through many-body spectroscopy, we further observe the absorption state arising from free interlayer electron-hole pairs. This observation yields a spectroscopic measurement of the interlayer exciton binding energy of about 250 meV.

New techniques for probing hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPP) in 2D materials will support the development of the emerging technologies in this field. Previous reports have shown that it is possible for WSe2 monolayers in contact with the hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) to generate HPP in the hBN via Raman scattering. In this paper, we set out new results on HPP Raman scattering induced in hBN by WSe2 and MoSe2 monolayers including new resonances at which the Raman scattering is enhanced. Analysis of the observed Raman lineshapes demonstrates that Raman scattering allows HPP with wavevectors with magnitudes significantly in excess of 15000 cm-1 to be probed. We present evidence that the Raman scattering can probe HPP with frequencies less than the expected lower bound on the Reststrahlen band suggesting new HPP physics still waits to be discovered., Comment: 14 + 10 pages, 5 + 6 figures, in paper + supplementary info

When monolayers of two-dimensional (2D) materials are stacked into van der Waals structures, interlayer electronic coupling can introduce entirely new properties, as exemplified by recent discoveries of moir\'e bands that host highly correlated electronic states and quantum dot-like interlayer exciton lattices. Here we show the magnetic control of interlayer electronic coupling, as manifested in tunable excitonic transitions, in an A-type antiferromagnetic 2D semiconductor CrSBr. Excitonic transitions in bilayer and above can be drastically changed when the magnetic order is switched from layered antiferromagnetic to the field-induced ferromagnetic state, an effect attributed to the spin-allowed interlayer hybridization of electron and hole orbitals in the latter, as revealed by GW-BSE calculations.
