We introduce a spin-orbit coupling scheme, where a retro-reflected laser beam selectively diffracts two spin components in opposite directions. Spin sensitivity is provided by sweeping through a magnetic-field sensitive transition while dark states ensure that spontaneous emission remains low. The scheme is adiabatic and thus inherently robust. This tailored spin-orbit coupling allows simultaneous measurements of the spin and momentum distributions of a strontium degenerate Fermi gas, and thus opens the path to momentum-resolved spin correlation measurements on SU(N) quantum magnets.

We present a spectroscopy scheme for the 7-kHz-wide 689-nm intercombination line of strontium. We rely on shelving detection, where electrons are first excited to a metastable state by the spectroscopy laser before their state is probed using the broad transition at 461 nm. As in the similar setting of calcium beam clocks, this enhances dramatically the signal strength as compared to direct saturated fluorescence or absorption spectroscopy of the narrow line. We implement shelving spectroscopy both in directed atomic beams and hot vapor cells with isotropic atomic velocities. We measure a fractional frequency instability $\sim 2 \times 10^{-12}$ at 1 s limited by technical noise - about one order of magnitude above shot noise limitations for our experimental parameters. Our work illustrates the robustness and flexibility of a scheme that can be very easily implemented in the reference cells or ovens of most existing strontium experiments, and may find applications for low-complexity clocks.

We report on the observation of a collective spin mode in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. Initially, all spins point perpendicular to the external magnetic field. The lowest energy mode consists in a sinusoidal oscillation of the local spin around its original axis, with an oscillation amplitude that linearly depends on the spatial coordinates. The frequency of the oscillation is set by the zero-point kinetic energy of the BEC. The observations are in excellent agreement with hydrodynamic equations. Understanding quantum thermalization through entanglement build-up in isolated quantum systems addresses fundamental questions on how unitary dynamics connects to statistical physics. Here, we study the spin dynamics and approach towards local thermal equilibrium of a macroscopic ensemble of S = 3 spins prepared in a pure coherent spin state, tilted compared to the magnetic field, under the effect of magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. The experiment uses a unit filled array of 104 chromium atoms in a three dimensional optical lattice, realizing the spin-3 XXZ Heisenberg model. The buildup of quantum correlation during the dynamics, especially as the angle approaches pi/2, is supported by comparison with an improved numerical quantum phase-space method and further confirmed by the observation that our isolated system thermalizes under its own dynamics, reaching a steady state consistent with the one extracted from a thermal ensemble with a temperature dictated from the system's energy. This indicates a scenario of quantum thermalization which is tied to the growth of entanglement entropy. Although direct experimental measurements of the Renyi entropy in our macroscopic system are unfeasible, the excellent agreement with the theory, which can compute this entropy, does indicate entanglement build-up., Comment: 12 figures

The high chemical reactivity of strontium, which can opacify a viewport exposed to a strontium atomic source, is a concern for some atomic physics experiments where it is sometimes necessary to send a laser beam counter-propagating relative to the atomic beam. While a number of experiments use heated sapphire windows to reduce strontium deposition and increase the viewport lifetime, here we study another possibility, consisting of sending the laser beam into the atomic flux by reflecting it off a mirror at 45$^{\circ}$ exposed to the strontium flux. We present our attempt to find a substrate that can be exposed to strontium and maintain high reflectivity. We first present the formation of a strontium metallic mirror under high flux ($> 10^{13}$ at/s/cm$^2$) on a sapphire substrate, and measure its reflectivity at 45$^\circ$ to be 0.65 (S) and 0.51 (P). On two other substrates, initially reflective metallic mirrors, we show for slightly lower fluxes (i.e., a factor of 3) that some reaction - most probably oxidation - is able to prevent the formation of the metallic layer even in high vacuum conditions. Instead, we observe the growth of a dielectric transparent medium. Despite the continuous deposition of strontium, the back surface reflectivity continues to dominate. We show the unusual evolution of reflectivity on these substrates, and emphasize two observations: i) a sharp threshold in the strontium flux separating transparent material growth from lossy material growth; ii) strontium's highly efficient capture of oxygen, even from rarefied sources: here mostly the residual high vacuum pressure (10$^{-7}$mbar full pressure) and possibly a protective SiO$_2$ surface on one of the substrates., Comment: We here share a note on reflectivity tests on mirrors exposed to a strontium atomic beam. Unfortunately, insufficiently high vacuum conditions prevent our results from being conclusive for the intended application of Zeeman slowing in ultra-high vacuum. We report on the production of a degenerate Fermi gas of 53Cr atoms, polarized in the state F=9/2, m_F=-9/2, by sympathetic cooling with bosonic S=3, m_S=-3 52Cr atoms. We load in an optical dipole trap 3.10^4 53Cr atoms with 10^6 52Cr atoms. Despite this initial small number of fermionic atoms, we reach a final temperature of T=0.6 T_f (Fermi temperature), with up to 10^3 53Cr atoms. This surprisingly efficient evaporation stems from an inter-isotope scattering length |a_{BF}| = (85+/- 10) a_{Bohr} which is small enough to reduce evaporative losses of the fermionic isotope, but large enough to insure thermalization., Comment: 4 figures

We experimentally study the spin dynamics of mesoscopic ensembles of ultracold magnetic spin-3 atoms located in two separated wells of an optical dipole trap. We use a radio-frequency sweep to selectively flip the spin of the atoms in one of the wells, which produces two separated spin domains of opposite polarization. We observe that these engineered spin domains are metastable with respect to the long-range magnetic dipolar interactions between the two ensembles. The absence of inter-cloud dipolar spin-exchange processes reveals a classical behavior, in contrast to previous results with atoms loaded in an optical lattice. When we merge the two subsystems, we observe spin-exchange dynamics due to contact interactions which enable the first determination of the s-wave scattering length of 52Cr atoms in the S=0 molecular channel a_0=13.5^{+11}_{-10.5}a_B (where a_B is the Bohr radius)., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We study dipolar relaxation of a chromium BEC loaded into a 3D optical lattice. We observe dipolar relaxation resonances when the magnetic energy released during the inelastic collision matches an excitation towards higher energy bands. A spectroscopy of these resonances for two orientations of the magnetic field provides a 3D band spectroscopy of the lattice. The narrowest resonance is registered for the lowest excitation energy. Its line-shape is sensitive to the on-site interaction energy. We use such sensitivity to probe number squeezing in a Mott insulator, and we reveal the production of three-body states with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom., Comment: 5 pages, 3 Figures, Supplemental Material

We measure the excitation spectrum of a dipolar Chromium Bose Einstein Condensate with Raman-Bragg spectroscopy. The energy spectrum depends on the orientation of the dipoles with respect to the excitation momentum, demonstrating an anisotropy which originates from the dipole-dipole interactions between the atoms. We compare our results with the Bogoliubov theory based on the local density approximation, and, at large excitation wavelengths, with numerical simulations of the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We study thermodynamic properties of a gas of spin 3 52Cr atoms across Bose Einstein condensation. Magnetization is free, due to dipole-dipole interactions (DDIs). We show that the critical temperature for condensation is lowered at extremely low magnetic fields, when the spin degree of freedom is thermally activated. The depolarized gas condenses in only one spin component, unless the magnetic field is set below a critical value, below which a non ferromagnetic phase is favored. Finally we present a spin thermometry efficient even below the degeneracy temperature., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We observe interband transitions mediated by the dipole-dipole interaction for an array of 1D quantum gases of chromium atoms, trapped in a 2D optical lattice. Interband transitions occur when dipolar relaxation releases an energy which matches or overcomes the lattice band gap. We analyze the role of tunneling in higher lattice bands on this process. We compare the experimental dipolar relaxation rate with a calculation based on a multiple Fermi Golden Rule approach, when the lattice sites are symmetric, and the magnetic field is parallel to the lattice axis. We also show that an almost complete suppression of dipolar relaxation is obtained below a magnetic field threshold set by the depth of the lattice: 1D quantum gases in an excited Zeeman state then become metastable., Comment: 4 figures

We have measured the effect of dipole-dipole interactions on the frequency of a collective mode of a Bose-Einstein condensate. At relatively large numbers of atoms, the experimental measurements are in good agreement with zero temperature theoretical predictions based on the Thomas Fermi approach. Experimental results obtained for the dipolar shift of a collective mode show a larger dependency to both the trap geometry and the atom number than the ones obtained when measuring the modification of the condensate aspect ratio due to dipolar forces. We report on a strategy to maximize the number of chromium atoms transferred from a magneto-optical trap into an optical trap through accumulation in metastable states via strong optical pumping. We analyse how the number of atoms in a chromium Bose Einstein condensate can be raised by a proper handling of the metastable state populations. Four laser diodes have been implemented to address the four levels that are populated during the MOT phase. The individual importance of each state is specified. To stabilize two of our laser diode, we have developed a simple ultrastable passive reference cavity whose long term stability is better than 1 MHz.

We study dipolar relaxation in both ultra-cold thermal and Bose-condensed chromium atom gases. We show three different ways to control dipolar relaxation, making use of either a static magnetic field, an oscillatory magnetic field, or an optical lattice to reduce the dimensionality of the gas from 3D to 2D. Although dipolar relaxation generally increases as a function of a static magnetic field intensity, we find a range of non-zero magnetic field intensities where dipolar relaxation is strongly reduced. We use this resonant reduction to accurately determine the S=6 scattering length of chromium atoms: $a_6 = 103 \pm 4 a_0$. We compare this new measurement to another new determination of $a_6$, which we perform by analysing the precise spectroscopy of a Feshbach resonance in d-wave collisions, yielding $a_6 = 102.5 \pm 0.4 a_0$. These two measurements provide by far the most precise determination of $a_6$ to date. We then show that, although dipolar interactions are long-range interactions, dipolar relaxation only involves the incoming partial wave $l=0$ for large enough magnetic field intensities, which has interesting consequences on the stability of dipolar Fermi gases. We then study ultra-cold chromium gases in a 1D optical lattice resulting in a collection of independent 2D gases. We show that dipolar relaxation is modified when the atoms collide in reduced dimensionality at low magnetic field intensities, and that the corresponding dipolar relaxation rate parameter is reduced by a factor up to 7 compared to the 3D case. Finally, we study dipolar relaxation in presence of radio-frequency (rf) oscillating magnetic fields, and we show that both the output channel energy and the transition amplitude can be controlled by means of rf frequency and Rabi frequency., Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures
