Superconducting domes, ubiquitous across a variety of quantum materials, are often understood as a window favorite for pairing opened by the fluctuations of competing orders. Yet, a quantitative understanding of how such a window closes is missing. Here, we show that inelastic neutron scattering, by quantifying a length scale associated with polar fluctuations, $\ell_0$, addresses this issue. We find that the superconducting dome of strontium titanate definitely ends when $\ell_0$ vanishes. Moreover, the product of $\ell_0$ and the Fermi wavevector peaks close to the maximum critical temperature. Thus, this superconducting dome stems from the competition between the increase of the density of states and the unavoidable collapse of the quantum paraelectric phase, both induced by doping. The successful quantitative account of both the peak and the end of the superconducting dome implies a central role in the pairing mechanism played by the soft ferro-electric mode and its hybridisation with the acoustic branch. We present a thorough experimental investigation on single crystals of the rare-earth based frustrated quantum antiferromagnet Pr$_3$BWO$_9$, a purported spin-liquid candidate on the breathing kagome lattice. This material possesses a disordered ground state with an unusual excitation spectrum involving a coexistence of sharp spin-waves and broad continuum excitations. Nevertheless, we show through a combination of thermodynamic, magnetometric and spectroscopic probes with detailed theoretical modeling that it should be understood in a completely different framework. The crystal field splits the lowest quasi-doublet states into two singlets moderately coupled through frustrated superexchange, resulting in a simple effective Hamiltonian of an Ising model in a transverse magnetic field. While our neutron spectroscopy data do point to significant correlations within the kagome planes, the dominant interactions are out-of-plane, forming frustrated triangular spin-tubes through two competing ferro-antiferromagnetic bonds. The resulting ground state is a simple quantum paramagnet, but with significant modifications to both thermodynamic and dynamic properties due to small perturbations to the transverse field Ising model in the form of hyperfine enhanced nuclear moments and weak structural disorder., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

We study the stability of the antiferromagnetic all-in--all-out state observed in dipolar-octupolar pyrochlores that have neodymium as the magnetic species. Different types of disorder are considered, either affecting the immediate environment of the Nd$^{3+}$ ion, or substituting it with a non-magnetic ion. Starting from the well studied Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ compound, Ti substitution on the Zr site and dilution on the Nd magnetic site with La substitution are investigated. The recently discovered entropy stabilized compound NdMox, which exhibits a high degree of disorder on the non magnetic site is also studied. Using a range of experimental techniques, especially very low-temperature magnetization and neutron scattering, we show that the all-in--all-out state is very robust and withstands substitutional disorder up to large rates. From these measurements, we estimate the Hamiltonian parameters and discuss their evolution in the framework of the phase diagram of dipolar-octupolar pyrochlore magnets., Comment: 19 pages, 20 figures (main text: 12 pages, 13 figures)

Magnon polarons are novel elementary excitations possessing hybrid magnonic and phononic signatures, and are responsible for many exotic spintronic and magnonic phenomena. Despite long-term sustained experimental efforts in chasing for magnon polarons, direct spectroscopic evidence of their existence is hardly observed. Here, we report the direct observation of magnon polarons using neutron spectroscopy on a multiferroic Fe$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ possessing strong magnon-phonon coupling. Specifically, below the magnetic ordering temperature, a gap opens at the nominal intersection of the original magnon and phonon bands, leading to two separated magnon-polaron bands. Each of the bands undergoes mixing, interconverting and reversing between its magnonic and phononic components. We attribute the formation of magnon polarons to the strong magnon-phonon coupling induced by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Intriguingly, we find that the band-inverted magnon polarons are topologically nontrivial. These results uncover exotic elementary excitations arising from the magnon-phonon coupling, and offer a new route to topological states by considering hybridizations between different types of fundamental excitations., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, published in Nature Communications

The microscopic mechanism of heavy band formation, relevant for unconventional superconductivity in CeCoIn$_5$ and other Ce-based heavy fermion materials, depends strongly on the efficiency with which $f$ electrons are delocalized from the rare earth sites and participate in a Kondo lattice. Replacing Ce$^{3+}$ ($4f^1$, $J=5/2$) with Sm$^{3+}$ ($4f^5$, $J=5/2$), we show that a combination of crystal field and on-site Coulomb repulsion causes SmCoIn$_5$ to exhibit a $\Gamma_7$ ground state similar to CeCoIn$_5$ with multiple $f$ electrons. Remarkably, we also find that with this ground state, SmCoIn$_5$ exhibits a temperature-induced valence crossover consistent with a Kondo scenario, leading to increased delocalization of $f$ holes below a temperature scale set by the crystal field, $T_v$ $\approx$ 60 K. Our result provides evidence that in the case of many $f$ electrons, the crystal field remains the most important tuning knob in controlling the efficiency of delocalization near a heavy fermion quantum critical point, and additionally clarifies that charge fluctuations play a general role in the ground state of "115" materials., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

The appearance of spontaneous charge order in chemical systems is often associated with the emergence of novel, and useful, properties. Here we show through single crystal diffraction that the Eu ions in the mixed valent metal EuPd$_3$S$_4$ undergo long-range charge ordering at $T_{\mathrm{CO}} = 340 \mathrm{~K}$ resulting in simple cubic lattices of Eu$^{2+}$ ($J = 7/2$) and Eu$^{3+}$ ($J = 0$) ions. As only one of the two sublattices has a non-magnetic ground state, the charge order results in the emergence of remarkably simple G-type antiferromagnetic order at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 2.85(6) \mathrm{~K}$, observed in magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction. Application of a $0.3 \mathrm{~T}$ field is sufficient to induce a spin flop transition to a magnetically polarized, but still charge ordered, state. Density functional theory calculations show that this charge order also modifies the electronic degeneracies present in the material: without charge order, EuPd$_3$S$_4$ is an example of a double Dirac material containing 8-fold degenerate electronic states, greater than the maximum degeneracy of six possible in molecular systems. The symmetry reduction from charge order transmutes 8-fold double Dirac states into 4-fold Dirac states, a degeneracy that can be preserved even in the presence of the magnetic order. Our results show not only how charge order can be used to produce interesting magnetic lattices, but also how it can be used to engineer controlled degeneracies in electronic states., Comment: 33 pages, 23 figures

The highly-frustrated rare-earth based magnet Nd$_3$BWO$_9$ is a promising candidate in the search for proximate spin liquid physics. We present a thorough investigation on single crystals of this material using bulk and microscopic techniques. Magnetization data reveal a fractional magnetization plateau for three different investigated field directions. The magnetic phase diagram is mapped out from calorimetric data and exhibits several domes of magnetic order below 0.3 K. Propagation vectors for all ordered phases are presented. The results suggest complex ordering in this material, and unveil the existence of a commensuration transition of the propagation vector at zero magnetic field. A scenario where interplane exchange interactions are essential to a magnetic model of Nd$_3$BWO$_9$ is discussed., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

PbFe$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$ (PFN) is a relaxor ferroelectric (T$_{c}$ $\sim$ 400 K) consisting of disordered magnetic Fe$^{3+}$ (S=${5\over2}$, L$\approx$0) ions resulting in a low temperature ``cluster glass" phase (W. Kleemann $\textit{et al.}$ Phys. Rev. Lett. ${\bf{105}}$, 257202 (2010)). We apply neutron scattering to investigate the dynamic magnetism of this phase in a large single crystal which displays a low temperature spin glass transition (T$_{g} \sim$ 15 K), but no observable spatially long-range antiferromagnetic order. The static response in the cluster glass phase (sampled on the timescale set by our resolution) is found to be characterized by an average magnetic spin direction that lacks any preferred direction. The dynamics that drive this phase are defined by a magnetic correlation length that gradually increases with decreasing temperature. However, below $\sim$ 50 K the spatial correlations gradually becoming more short range indicative of increasing disorder on cooling, thereby unravelling magnetism, until the low temperature glass phase sets in at T$_{g}$ $\sim$ 15 K. Neutron spectroscopy is used to characterize the spin fluctuations in the cluster glass phase and are found to be defined by a broadband of frequencies on the scale of $\sim$ THz, termed here ``fast" fluctuations. The frequency bandwidth driving the magnetic fluctuations mimics the correlation length and decreases until $\sim$ 50 K, and then increases again until the glass transition. Through investigating the low-energy acoustic phonons we find evidence of multiple distinct structural regions which form the basis of the clusters, generating a significant amount of local disorder. We suggest that random molecular fields originating from conflicting interactions between clusters is important for the destruction of magnetic order and the eventual formation of the cluster glass in PFN., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, to be published in Phys. CrBr$_3$ is an excellent realization of the two-dimensional honeycomb ferromagnet, which offers a bosonic equivalent of graphene with Dirac magnons and topological character. We perform inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements using state-of-the-art instrumentation to update 50-year-old data, thereby enabling a definitive comparison both with recent experimental claims of a significant gap at the Dirac point and with theoretical predictions for thermal magnon renormalization. We demonstrate that CrBr$_3$ has next-neighbor $J_2$ and $J_3$ interactions approximately 5\% of $J_1$, an ideal Dirac magnon dispersion at the K point, and the associated signature of isospin winding. The magnon lifetime and the thermal band renormalization show the universal $T^2$ evolution expected from an interacting spin-wave treatment, but the measured dispersion lacks the predicted van Hove features, highlighting the need for a deeper theoretical analysis.

Neutron scattering is a powerful tool to study magnetic structures and dynamics, benefiting from a precisely established theoretical framework. The neutron dipole moment interacts with electrons in materials via their magnetic field, which can have spin and orbital origins. Yet in most experimentally studied cases the individual degrees of freedom are well described within the dipole approximation, sometimes accompanied by further terms of a multipolar expansion that usually act as minor corrections to the dipole form factor. Here we report a unique example of neutrons diffracted mainly by magnetic octupoles. This unusual situation arises in a quantum spin ice where the electronic wavefunction becomes essentially octupolar under the effect of correlations. Magnetic skyrmions are topological solitons with a nanoscale winding spin texture that hold promise for spintronics applications. Until now, skyrmions have been observed in a variety of magnets that exhibit nearly parallel alignment for the neighbouring spins, but theoretically, skyrmions with anti-parallel neighbouring spins are also possible. The latter, antiferromagnetic skyrmions, may allow more flexible control compared to the conventional ferromagnetic skyrmions. Here, by combining neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that a fractional antiferromagnetic skyrmion lattice with an incipient meron character is stabilized in MnSc$_2$S$_4$ through anisotropic couplings. Spin liquids are highly correlated yet disordered states formed by the entanglement of magnetic dipoles$^1$. Theories typically define such states using gauge fields and deconfined quasiparticle excitations that emerge from a simple rule governing the local ground state of a frustrated magnet. For example, the '2-in-2-out' ice rule for dipole moments on a tetrahedron can lead to a quantum spin ice in rare-earth pyrochlores - a state described by a lattice gauge theory of quantum electrodynamics$^{2-4}$. However, f-electron ions often carry multipole degrees of freedom of higher rank than dipoles, leading to intriguing behaviours and 'hidden' orders$^{5-6}$. Here we show that the correlated ground state of a Ce$^{3+}$-based pyrochlore, Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$, is a quantum liquid of magnetic octupoles. Our neutron scattering results are consistent with the formation of a fluid-like state of matter, but the intensity distribution is weighted to larger scattering vectors, which indicates that the correlated degrees of freedom have a more complex magnetization density than that typical of magnetic dipoles in a spin liquid. The temperature evolution of the bulk properties in the correlated regime below 1 Kelvin is well reproduced using a model of dipole-octupole doublets on a pyrochlore lattice$^{7-8}$. The nature and strength of the octupole-octupole couplings, together with the existence of a continuum of excitations attributed to spinons, provides further evidence for a quantum ice of octupoles governed by a '2-plus-2-minus' rule. Our work identifies Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ as a unique example of a material where frustrated multipoles form a 'hidden' topological order, thus generalizing observations on quantum spin liquids to multipolar phases that can support novel types of emergent fields and excitations.

Quantum spin ice is an appealing proposal of a quantum spin liquid - systems where the magnetic moments of the constituent electron spins evade classical long-range order to form an exotic state that is quantum entangled and coherent over macroscopic length scales. Such phases are at the edge of our current knowledge in condensed matter as they go beyond the established paradigm of symmetry-breaking order and associated excitations. Terbium gallium garnet (TGG), Tb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$, is well known for its applications in laser optics, but also exhibits complex low-temperature magnetism that is not yet fully understood. Its low-temperature magnetic order is determined by means of time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction. It is found to be a multiaxial antiferromagnet with magnetic Tb$^{3+}$ ions forming six sublattices of magnetic moments aligned parallel and anti-parallel to the $\langle100\rangle$ crystallographic directions of the cubic unit cell. The structure displays strong easy-axis anisotropy with respect to a two-fold axis of symmetry in the local orthorhombic environment of the Tb$^{3+}$ sites. The crystal-field splitting within the single-ion ground-state manifold is investigated by inelastic neutron scattering on powder samples. A strong temperature dependence of the quasidoublet ground-state is observed and revised parameters of the crystal-field Hamiltonian are given. The results of bulk magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation measurements are in good agreement with values based on the crystal-field model down to 20~K, where the onset of magnetic correlations is observed., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

We study magnetic behaviour of the Yb$^{3+}$ ions on a frustrated pyrochlore lattice in the spinel {\CYS}. The crystal-electric field parameters deduced from high-energy inelastic neutron scattering reveal well-isolated ytterbium ground state doublet with a weakly Ising character. Magnetic order studied by powder neutron diffraction evolves from the $XY$-type antiferromagnetic $\Gamma_5$ state to a splayed ice-like ferromagnet (both with k=0) in applied magnetic field with $B_c$=3 T. Low-energy inelastic neutron scattering identifies weakly dispersive magnetic bands around 0.72 meV starting at $\mid\bf{Q}\mid$ = 1.1 \AA$^{-1}$~ at zero field, which diminish with field and vanish above 3 T. We explain the observed magnetic behaviour in framework of the nearest-neighbour anisotropic exchange model for effective $S=1/2$ Kramers doublets on the pyrochlore lattice. The estimated exchanges position the {\CYS} spinel close to the phase boundary between the $\Gamma_5$ and splayed ferromagnet states, similar to the Yb-pyrochlores suggesting an important role of the competition between these phases., Comment: 24 pages, 7 Figures

The description and detection of unconventional magnetic states such as spin liquids is a recurring topic in condensed matter physics. While much of the efforts have traditionally been directed at geometrically frustrated antiferromagnets, recent studies reveal that systems featuring competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions are also promising candidate materials. We find that this competition leads to the notion of special temperatures, analogous to those of gases, at which the competing interactions balance, and the system is quasi-ideal. Although induced by weak perturbing interactions, these special temperatures are surprisingly high and constitute an accessible experimental diagnostic of eventual order or spin liquid properties. The well characterised Hamiltonian and extended low-temperature susceptibility measurement of the canonical frustrated ferromagnet Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ enables us to formulate both a phenomenological and microscopic theory of special temperatures for magnets. Other members of this new class of magnets include kapellasite Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$ and the spinel GeCo$_2$O$_4$., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Determining the fate of the Pauling entropy in the classical spin ice material Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ with respect to the third law of thermodynamics has become an important test case for understanding the existence and stability of ice-rule states in general. The standard model of spin ice - the dipolar spin ice model - predicts an ordering transition at $T\approx 0.15$ K, but recent experiments by Pomaranski $et\ al.$ suggest an entropy recovery over long time scales at temperatures as high as $0.5$ K, much too high to be compatible with theory. Using neutron scattering and specific heat measurements at low temperatures and with long time scales ($0.35$ K$/10^6$ s and $0.5$ K$/10^5$ s respectively) on several isotopically enriched samples we find no evidence of a reduction of ice-rule correlations or spin entropy. High-resolution simulations of the neutron structure factor show that the spin correlations remain well described by the dipolar spin ice model at all temperatures. Further, by careful consideration of hyperfine contributions, we conclude that the original entropy measurements of Ramirez $et\ al.$ are, after all, essentially correct: the short-time relaxation method used in that study gives a reasonably accurate estimate of the equilibrium spin ice entropy due to a cancellation of contributions., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

In spinels ACr2O4 (A=Mg, Zn) realisation of the classical pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet model is complicated by a strong spin-lattice coupling: the extensive degeneracy of the ground state is lifted by a magneto-structural transition at TN=12.5 K. We study the resulting low-temperature low-symmetry crystal structure by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The consistent features of x-ray low-temperature patterns are explained by the tetragonal model of Ehrenberg et. al (Pow. Diff. 17, 230( 2002)), while other features depend on sample or cooling protocol. Complex partially ordered magnetic state is studied by neutron diffraction and spherical neutron polarimetry. Multiple magnetic domains of configuration arms of the propagation vectors k1=(1/2 1/2 0), k2=(1 0 1/2) appear. The ordered moment reaches 1.94(3) muB/Cr3+ for k1 and 2.08(3) muB/Cr3+ for k2, if equal amount of the k1 and k2 phases is assumed. The magnetic arrangements have the dominant components along the [110] and [1-10] diagonals and a smaller c-component. By inelastic neutron scattering we investigate the spin excitations, which comprise a mixture of dispersive spin waves propagating from the magnetic Bragg peaks and resonance modes centered at equal energy steps of 4.5 meV. We interpret these as acoustic and optical spin wave branches, but show that the neutron scattering cross sections of transitions within a unit of two corner-sharing tetrahedra match the observed intensity distribution of the resonances. The distinctive fingerprint of cluster-like excitations in the optical spin wave branches suggests that propagating excitations are localized by the complex crystal structure and magnetic orders.

We report an inelastic neutron scattering study on the spin resonance in the bilayer iron-based superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_4$. In contrast to its quasi-two-dimensional electron structure, three strongly $L$-dependent modes of spin resonance are found below $T_c=35$ K. The mode energies are below and linearly scale with the total superconducting gaps summed on the nesting hole and electron pockets, essentially in agreement with the results in cuprate and heavy fermion superconductors. This observation supports the sign-reversed Cooper pairing mechanism under multiple pairing channels and resolves the long-standing puzzles concerning the broadening and dispersive spin resonance peak in iron pnictides. More importantly, the triple resonant modes can be classified into odd and even symmetries with respect to the distance of Fe-Fe planes within the Fe-As bilayer unit. Thus, our results closely resemble those in the bilayer cuprates with nondegenerate spin excitations, suggesting that these two high-$T_c$ superconducting families share a common nature., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, including supplementary materials

Inelastic neutron scattering has been used to study the magneto-elastic excitations in the multiferroic manganite hexagonal YMnO$_3$. An avoided crossing is found between magnon and phonon modes close to the Brillouin zone boundary in the $(a,b)$-plane. Neutron polarization analysis reveals that this mode has mixed magnon-phonon character. An external magnetic field along the $c$-axis is observed to cause a linear field-induced splitting of one of the spin wave branches. A theoretical description is performed, using a Heisenberg model of localized spins, acoustic phonon modes and a magneto-elastic coupling via the single-ion magnetostriction. The model quantitatively reproduces the dispersion and intensities of all modes in the full Brillouin zone, describes the observed magnon-phonon hybridized modes, and quantifies the magneto-elastic coupling. The combined information, including the field-induced magnon splitting, allows us to exclude several of the earlier proposed models and point to the correct magnetic ground state symmetry, and provides an effective dynamic model relevant for the multiferroic hexagonal manganites., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

In a quantum spin liquid, the magnetic moments of the constituent electron spins evade classical long-range order to form an exotic state that is quantum entangled and coherent over macroscopic length scales [1-2]. Such phases offer promising perspectives for device applications in quantum information technologies, and their study can reveal fundamentally novel physics in quantum matter. Quantum spin ice is an appealing proposal of one such state, in which the fundamental ground state properties and excitations are described by an emergent U(1) lattice gauge theory [3-7]. This quantum-coherent regime has quasiparticles that are predicted to behave like magnetic and electric monopoles, along with a gauge boson playing the role of an artificial photon. However, this emergent lattice quantum electrodynamics has proved elusive in experiments. Here we report neutron scattering measurements of the rare-earth pyrochlore magnet Pr$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$ that provide evidence for a quantum spin ice ground state. We find a quasi-elastic structure factor with pinch points - a signature of a classical spin ice - that are partially suppressed, as expected in the quantum-coherent regime of the lattice field theory at finite temperature. Our result allows an estimate for the speed of light associated with magnetic photon excitations. We also reveal a continuum of inelastic spin excitations, which resemble predictions for the fractionalized, topological excitations of a quantum spin ice. Taken together, these two signatures suggest that the low-energy physics of Pr$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$ can be described by emergent quantum electrodynamics. If confirmed, the observation of a quantum spin ice ground state would constitute a concrete example of a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid - a topical state of matter which has so far mostly been explored in lower dimensionalities., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

Despite remarkable progress in developing multifunctional materials, spin-driven ferroelectrics featuring both spontaneous magnetization and electric polarization are still rare. Among such ferromagnetic ferroelectrics are conical spin spiral magnets with a simultaneous reversal of magnetization and electric polarization that is still little understood. Such materials can feature various multiferroic domains that complicates their study. Here we study the multiferroic domains in ferromagnetic ferroelectric Mn$_{2}$GeO$_{4}$ using neutron diffraction, and show that it features a double-Q conical magnetic structure that, apart from trivial 180 degree commensurate magnetic domains, can be described by ferromagnetic and ferroelectric domains only. We show unconventional magnetoelectric couplings such as the magnetic-field-driven reversal of ferroelectric polarization with no change of spin-helicity, and present a phenomenological theory that successfully explains the magnetoelectric coupling. Our measurements establish Mn$_{2}$GeO$_{4}$ as a conceptually simple multiferroic in which the magnetic-field-driven flop of conical spin spirals leads to the simultaneous reversal of magnetization and electric polarization., Comment: 25+4 pages, 4+1 figures, 2+2 tables

Excitations in a spin ice behave as magnetic monopoles, and their population and mobility control the dynamics of a spin ice at low temperature. CdEr$_2$Se$_4$ is reported to have the Pauling entropy characteristic of a spin ice, but its dynamics are three-orders of magnitude faster than the canonical spin ice Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. In this letter we use diffuse neutron scattering to show that both CdEr$_2$Se$_4$ and CdEr$_2$S$_4$ support a dipolar spin ice state -- the host phase for a Coulomb gas of emergent magnetic monopoles. These Coulomb gases have similar parameters to that in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, i.e. dilute and uncorrelated, so cannot provide three-orders faster dynamics through a larger monopole population alone. We investigate the monopole dynamics using ac susceptometry and neutron spin echo spectroscopy, and verify the crystal electric field Hamiltonian of the Er$^{3+}$ ions using inelastic neutron scattering. A quantitative calculation of the monopole hopping rate using our Coulomb gas and crystal electric field parameters shows that the fast dynamics in CdEr$_2$X$_4$ (X = Se, S) are primarily due to much faster monopole hopping. Our work suggests that CdEr$_2$X$_4$ offer the possibility to study alternative spin ice ground states and dynamics, with equilibration possible at much lower temperatures than the rare earth pyrochlore examples., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

The frustrated magnet SrDy$_2$O$_4$ exhibits a field-induced phase with a magnetization plateau at $1/3$ of the saturation value for magnetic fields applied along the $b$-axis. We report here a neutron scattering study of the nature and symmetry of the magnetic order in this field-induced phase. Below $T\approx 0.5$ K, there are strong hysteretic effects, and the order is short or long ranged for zero-field and field cooling, respectively. We find that the long-range ordered magnetic structure within the zig-zag chains is identical to that expected for the one-dimensional axial next-nearest neighbour Ising (ANNNI) model in longitudinal field. The long-range ordered structure in field contrasts with the short-range order found at zero field, and is probably reached through enhanced quantum fluctuations with increasing fields., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

To understand emergent magnetic monopole dynamics in the spin ices Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, it is necessary to investigate the mechanisms by which spins flip in these materials. Presently there are thought to be two processes: quantum tunneling at low and intermediate temperatures and thermally activated at high temperatures. We identify possible couplings between crystal field and optical phonon excitations and construct a strictly constrained model of phonon-mediated spin flipping that quantitatively describes the high-temperature processes in both compounds, as measured by quasielastic neutron scattering. We support the model with direct experimental evidence of the coupling between crystal field states and optical phonons in Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$.

Magnetic frustration and low dimensionality can prevent long range magnetic order and lead to exotic correlated ground states. SrDy$_2$O$_4$ consists of magnetic Dy$^{3+}$ ions forming magnetically frustrated zig-zag chains along the c-axis and shows no long range order to temperatures as low as $T=60$ mK. We carried out neutron scattering and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements using powder and single crystals of SrDy$_2$O$_4$. Diffuse neutron scattering indicates strong one-dimensional (1D) magnetic correlations along the chain direction that can be qualitatively accounted for by the axial next-nearest neighbour Ising (ANNNI) model with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor exchange $J_1=0.3$ meV and $J_2=0.2$ meV, respectively. Three-dimensional (3D) correlations become important below $T^*\approx0.7$ K. At $T=60$ mK, the short range correlations are characterized by a putative propagation vector $\textbf{k}_{1/2}=(0,\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2})$. We argue that the absence of long range order arises from the presence of slowly decaying 1D domain walls that are trapped due to 3D correlations. This stabilizes a low-temperature phase without long range magnetic order, but with well-ordered chain segments separated by slowly-moving domain walls., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables

The charge ordered structure of ions and vacancies characterizing rare-earth pyrochlore oxides serves as a model for the study of geometrically frustrated magnetism. The organization of magnetic ions into networks of corner-sharing tetrahedra gives rise to highly correlated magnetic phases with strong fluctuations, including spin liquids and spin ices. It is an open question how these ground states governed by local rules are affected by disorder. In the pyrochlore Tb$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$, we demonstrate that the vicinity of the disordering transition towards a defective fluorite structure translates into a tunable density of anion Frenkel disorder while cations remain ordered. Quenched random crystal fields and disordered exchange interactions can therefore be introduced into otherwise perfect pyrochlore lattices of magnetic ions. We show that disorder can play a crucial role in preventing long-range magnetic order at low temperatures, and instead induces a strongly-fluctuating Coulomb spin liquid with defect-induced frozen magnetic degrees of freedom., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, + Supplementary Information (4 figures)

In vortex-like spin arrangements, multiple spins can combine into emergent multipole moments. Such multipole moments have broken space-inversion and time-reversal symmetries, and can therefore exhibit linear magnetoelectric (ME) activity. Three types of such multipole moments are known: toroidal, monopole, and quadrupole moments. So far, however, the ME-activity of these multipole moments has only been established experimentally for the toroidal moment. Here, we propose a magnetic square cupola cluster, in which four corner-sharing square-coordinated metal-ligand fragments form a noncoplanar buckled structure, as a promising structural unit that carries an ME-active multipole moment. We substantiate this idea by observing clear magnetodielectric signals associated with an antiferroic ME-active magnetic quadrupole order in the real material Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. The present result serves as a useful guide for exploring and designing new ME-active materials based on vortex-like spin arrangements., Comment: 4 figures

In this work we present a neutron Larmor diffraction study of the rare earth pyrochlores $R_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, with $R$ = Tb, Dy, Ho. We measured the temperature dependence of the lattice parameter with precision $10^{-5}$, between 0.5 K and 300 K in each of the three compounds. The lattice parameter of the spin ices Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ enters into the derivation of the charge of the emergent magnetic monopole excitations suggested to exist in these materials. We found that throughout the range of applicability of the theory of emergent monopoles in the spin ices there will be no renormalization of the monopole charge due to lattice contraction. In Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ strong magnetoelastic interactions have been reported. We found no sign of the previously reported negative thermal expansion, but did observe anomalies in the thermal expansion that can be correlated with previously observed interactions between phonon and crystal field excitations. Other features in the thermal expansion of all three compounds can be related to previously observed anomalies the elastic constants, and explained by the phonon band structure of the rare earth titanates. The temperature dependence of the lattice strain in all three compounds can be correlated with the thermal population of excited crystal field levels., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ presents an opportunity for exploring low-dimensional magnetism on a square lattice of $S=1/2$ Cu$^{2+}$ ions. We employ ab initio multi-reference configuration interaction calculations to unravel the Cu$^{2+}$ electronic structure and to evaluate exchange interactions in Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$. The latter results are validated by inelastic neutron scattering using linear spin-wave theory and series-expansion corrections for quantum effects to extract true coupling parameters. Using this methodology, which is quite general, we demonstrate that Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ is an almost realization of a nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet but with relatively weak coupling of 7.18(5) meV., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Spirals and helices are common motifs of long-range order in magnetic solids, and they may also be organized into more complex emergent structures such as magnetic skyrmions and vortices. A new type of spiral state, the spiral spin-liquid, in which spins fluctuate collectively as spirals, has recently been predicted to exist. Here, using neutron scattering techniques, we experimentally prove the existence of a spiral spin-liquid in MnSc$_2$S$_4$ by directly observing the 'spiral surface' - a continuous surface of spiral propagation vectors in reciprocal space. We elucidate the multi-step ordering behavior of the spiral spin-liquid, and discover a vortex-like triple-q phase on application of a magnetic field. Our results prove the effectiveness of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Hamiltonian on the diamond lattice as a model for the spiral spin-liquid state in MnSc$_2$S$_4$, and also demonstrate a new way to realize a magnetic vortex lattice., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

The emergent behavior of spin liquids that are born out of geometrical frustration makes them an intriguing state of matter. We show that in the quantum kagome antiferromagnet ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$SO$_4$ several different correlated, yet fluctuating states exist. By combining complementary local-probe techniques with neutron scattering, we discover a crossover from a critical regime into a gapless spin-liquid phase with decreasing temperature. An additional unconventional instability of the latter phase leads to a second, distinct spin-liquid state that is stabilized at the lowest temperatures. We advance such complex behavior as a feature common to different frustrated quantum magnets.

We report the low temperature magnetic properties of the pyrochlore Pr$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$. Polycrystalline and single-crystal samples are investigated using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy and macroscopic measurements, respectively. The crystal-field splitting produces a non-Kramers doublet ground state for Pr$^{3+}$, with Ising-like anisotropy. Below 0.5 K ferromagnetic correlations develop, which suggests that the system enters a spin ice-like state associated with the metamagnetic behavior observed at $\mu_0H_c\sim2.4$~T. In this regime, the development of a discrete inelastic excitation in the neutron spectra indicates the appearance of spin dynamics which are likely related to cooperative quantum fluctuations., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Recent experimental results have emphasized two aspects of Tb2Ti2O7 which have not been taken into account in previous attempts to construct theories of Tb2Ti2O7: the role of small levels of structural disorder, which appears to control the formation of a long-range ordered state of as yet unknown nature; and the importance of strong coupling between spin and lattice degrees of freedom, which results in the hybridization of crystal field excitons and transverse acoustic phonons. In this work we examine the juncture of these two phenomena and show that samples with strongly contrasting behavior vis-a-vis the structural disorder (i.e. with and without the transition to the ordered state), develop identical magnetoelastic coupling. We also show that the comparison between single crystal and powder samples is more complicated than previously thought - the correlation between lattice parameter (as a measure of superstoichiometric Tb$^{3+}$) and the existence of a specific heat peak, as observed in powder samples, does not hold for single crystals., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; resubmitted version

We report the low temperature magnetic properties of Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$, a rare-earth pyrochlore. Our susceptibility and magnetization measurements show that due to the thermal isolation of a Kramers doublet ground state, Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ has Ising-like magnetic moments of $\sim1.18$ $\mu_\mathrm{B}$. The magnetic moments are confined to the local trigonal axes, as in a spin ice, but the exchange interactions are antiferromagnetic. Below 1 K the system enters a regime with antiferromagnetic correlations. In contrast to predictions for classical $\langle 111 \rangle$-Ising spins on the pyrochlore lattice, there is no sign of long-range ordering down to 0.02 K. Our results suggest that Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ features an antiferromagnetic liquid ground state with strong quantum fluctuations., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

At low temperatures, Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ enters a spin liquid state, despite expectations of magnetic order and/or a structural distortion. Using neutron scattering, we have discovered that in this spin liquid state an excited crystal field level is coupled to a transverse acoustic phonon, forming a hybrid excitation. Magnetic and phononlike branches with identical dispersion relations can be identified, and the hybridization vanishes in the paramagnetic state. We suggest that Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is aptly named a "magnetoelastic spin liquid" and that the hybridization of the excitations suppresses both magnetic ordering and the structural distortion. At low temperatures, a spin ice enters a Coulomb phase - a state with algebraic correlations and topologically constrained spin configurations. In Ho2Ti2O7, we have observed experimentally that this process is accompanied by a non-standard temperature evolution of the wave vector dependent magnetic susceptibility, as measured by neutron scattering. Analytical and numerical approaches reveal signatures of a crossover between two Curie laws, one characterizing the high temperature paramagnetic regime, and the other the low temperature topologically constrained regime, which we call the spin liquid Curie law. The theory is shown to be in excellent agreement with neutron scattering experiments. On a more general footing, i) the existence of two Curie laws appears to be a general property of the emergent gauge field for a classical spin liquid, and ii) sheds light on the experimental difficulty of measuring a precise Curie-Weiss temperature in frustrated materials; iii) the mapping between gauge and spin degrees of freedom means that the susceptibility at finite wave vector can be used as a local probe of fluctuations among topological sectors., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Spangolite, Cu6Al(SO4)(OH)12Cl.3H2O, is a hydrated layered copper sulphate mineral. The Cu2+ ions of each layer form a systematically depleted triangular lattice which approximates a maple leaf lattice. We present details of the crystal structure, which suggest that in spangolite this lattice actually comprises two species of edge linked trimers with different exchange parameters. However, magnetic susceptibility measurements show that despite the structural trimers, the magnetic properties are dominated by dimerization. The magnetic structure of multiferroic Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ has been investigated using non-resonant X-ray magnetic scattering. Incident circularly polarized X-rays combined with full polarization analysis of the scattered beam is shown to yield high sensitivity to the components of the cycloidal magnetic order, including their relative phases. New information on the magnetic structure in the ferroelectric phase is obtained, where it is found that the magnetic moments on the "cross-tie" sites are quenched relative to those on the "spine" sites. This implies that the onset of ferroelectricity is associated mainly with spine site magnetic order. We also demonstrate that our technique enables the imaging of multiferroic domains through polarization enhanced topography. This approach is used to image the domains as the sample is cycled by an electric field through its hysteresis loop, revealing the gradual switching of domains without nucleation., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We present the first neutron inelastic scattering results on the low temperature magnetic state of the three dimensional hyperkagom\'e compound Gd$_{3}$Ga$_{5}$O$_{12}$ (GGG). GGG is often classified as a strongly frustrated system with a manifold of continuously connected states. However, in contrast to the expectation of a continuum of gap-less excitations above a spin liquid-like ground state our results reveal three distinct inelastic modes found at 0.04(1), 0.12(2) an 0.58(3) meV at 0.06 K. The inelastic modes can be attributed to the magnetic ground state with the lowest and highest energy excitations showing spatial dependencies indicative of dimerized short range antiferromagnetic correlations. Short range correlations, reminiscent of spin liquid-like order, are static within the instrumental resolution (50 $\mu$eV) and represent 82% of the spectral weight. Longer range correlations, first observed by Petrenko, et al.\cite{Petrenko1998, develop below 0.14 ~K within the elastic cross section. The short range static correlations and dynamic components survive to high temperatures, comparable to the nearest neighbor exchange interactions. Our results suggest that the ground state of a three dimensional hyperkagom\'e compound differs distinctly from its frustrated counterparts on a pyrochlore lattice and reveals a juxtaposition of spin liquid order and strong dimerised coupling.

LuCuGaO4 has magnetic Cu2+ and diamagnetic Ga3+ ions distributed on a triangular bilayer and is suggested to undergo a spin-glass transition with T_g approximately 0.4 K. Using muSR and neutron scattering measurements, we show that at low temperature the spins form a short-range correlated state with spin fluctuations detectable over a wide range of timescales: at 0.05 K magnetic fluctuations can be detected in both the muSR time window and also extending beyond 7 meV in the inelastic neutron scattering response, indicating magnetic fluctuations spanning timescales between 1E-5 and 1E-10 seconds. The dynamical susceptibility scales according to the form \chi''(\omega)T^\alpha, with \alpha=1, throughout the measured temperature range (0.05 - 50 K). These effects are associated with quantum fluctuations and some degree of structural disorder in ostensibly quite different materials, including certain heavy fermion alloys, kagome spin liquids, quantum spin glasses, and valence bond glasses. We therefore suggest LuCuGaO4 is an interesting model compound for the further examination of disorder and quantum magnetism., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures; new version including new data

Ni2SiO4, Liebenbergite, is an example of a quasi-one-dimensional magnet made up of frustrated corner sharing triangles of Ni2+ (S = 1) ions that propagate parallel to the b axis. Ni2SiO4 is isostructural with olivine, a common mineral of varying composition Fe2-xMgxSiO4, and is described in the orthorhombic space group Pnma. A synthetic polycrystalline sample of Ni2SiO4 was studied using constant wavelength powder neutron diffraction. Diffraction spectra were collected above and below the antiferromagnetic ordering transition (TN ~ 34 K) and were used to refine the atomic and magnetic structures of Ni2SiO4. Corepresentational theory was used to determine the symmetry-allowed magnetic structures after the Neel transition and the refned magnetic structure evidences both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic inter-chain interactions, and ferromagnetic intra-chain coupling.
