Search

In quantum physics, even simple data with a well-defined structure at the wave function level can be characterized by extremely complex correlations between its constituent elements. The inherent non-locality of the quantum correlations generally prevents one from providing their simple and transparent interpretation, which also remains a challenging problem for advanced classical techniques that approximate quantum states with neural networks. Here we show that monitoring the neural network weight space while learning quantum statistics from measurements allows to develop physical intuition about complex multipartite patterns and thus helps to construct more effective classical representations of the wave functions. Particularly, we observe the formation of distinct global convolutional structures, receptive fields in the hidden layer of the Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM) within the neural quantum tomography of the highly-entangled Dicke states. On this basis we propose an exact two-parameter classical representation not only for a specific quantum wave function, but for the whole family of the N-qubit Dicke states of different entanglement. Our findings suggest a fresh look at constructing convolutional neural networks for processing data with non-local patterns and pave the way for developing exact learning-based representations of entangled quantum states.

Correlated materials may exhibit unusually high resistivity increasing linearly in temperature, breaking through the Mott-Ioffe-Regel bound, above which coherent quasiparticles are destroyed. The fate of collective charge excitations, or plasmons, in these systems is a subject of debate. Several studies suggest plasmons are overdamped while others detect unrenormalized plasmons. Here, we present direct optical images of low-loss hyperbolic plasmon polaritons (HPPs) in the correlated van der Waals metal MoOCl2. HPPs are plasmon-photon modes that waveguide through extremely anisotropic media and are remarkably long-lived in MoOCl2. Many-body theory supported by photoemission results reveals that MoOCl2 is in an orbital-selective and highly incoherent Peierls phase. Different orbitals acquire markedly different bonding-antibonding character, producing a highly-anisotropic, isolated Fermi surface. The Fermi surface is further reconstructed and made partly incoherent by electronic interactions, renormalizing the plasma frequency. HPPs remain long-lived in spite of this, allowing us to uncover previously unseen imprints of electronic correlations on plasmonic collective modes., Comment: 32 pages, 16 figures

The presence of spin-polarized charge carriers in metallic magnets provides a mechanism for spin-lattice interactions mediated by electron-phonon coupling. Here, we present a theory of this mechanism used to estimate its effect on the exchange interactions in 2D magnets. Starting from a square lattice model at half filling, we show that the presence of electron-phonon coupling with equilibrium phonon distribution leads to a notable suppression of exchange interactions with temperature. We then apply our approach to the prototypical 2D metallic ferromagnet, Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$, with moderate electron-phonon coupling. We find that the exchange interactions undergo a renormalization, leading to a softening of the magnon modes, and suppression of the Curie temperature by $\sim$10\%. We expect that this effect can be further enhanced in systems with strong electron-phonon coupling, as well as for non-equilibrium distribution of phonons induced by strong laser fields or charge currents., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Using the Sierpinski gasket (triangle) and carpet (square) lattices as examples, we theoretically study the properties of fractal superconductors. For that, we focus on the phenomenon of $s$-wave superconductivity in the Hubbard model with attractive on-site potential and employ the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach and the theory of superfluid stiffness. For the case of the Sierpinski gasket, we demonstrate that fractal geometry of the underlying crystalline lattice can be strongly beneficial for superconductivity, not only leading to a considerable increase of the critical temperature $T_c$ as compared to the regular triangular lattice but also supporting macroscopic phase coherence of the Cooper pairs. In contrast, the Sierpinski carpet geometry does not lead to pronounced effects, and we find no substantial difference as compared with the regular square lattice. Magnetic skyrmions are vortex-like quasiparticles characterized by long lifetime and remarkable topological properties. That makes them a promising candidate for the role of information carriers in magnetic information storage and processing devices. Although considerable progress has been made in studying skyrmions in classical systems, little is known about the quantum case: quantum skyrmions cannot be directly observed by probing the local magnetization of the system, and the notion of topological protection is elusive in the quantum realm. Here, we explore the potential robustness of quantum skyrmions in comparison to their classical counterparts. We theoretically analyze the dynamics of a quantum skyrmion subject to local projective measurements and demonstrate that the properties of the skyrmionic quantum state change very little upon external perturbations. We further show that by performing repetitive measurements on a quantum skyrmion, it can be completely stabilized through an analog of the quantum Zeno effect., Comment: 7+eps pages, 7 figures; v2: fixed mistake in the definition of rescaled time \tau after Eq.(6)

Ultrathin CrSBr flakes are exfoliated \emph{in situ} on Au(111) and Ag(111) and their electronic structure is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The thin flakes' electronic properties are drastically different from those of the bulk material and also substrate-dependent. For both substrates, a strong charge transfer to the flakes is observed, partly populating the conduction band and giving rise to a highly anisotropic Fermi contour with an Ohmic contact to the substrate. The fundamental CrSBr band gap is strongly renormalized compared to the bulk. The charge transfer to the CrSBr flake is substantially larger for Ag(111) than for Au(111), but a rigid energy shift of the chemical potential is insufficient to describe the observed band structure modifications. In particular, the Fermi contour shows a Lifshitz transition, the fundamental band gap undergoes a transition from direct on Au(111) to indirect on Ag(111) and a doping-induced symmetry breaking between the intra-layer Cr magnetic moments further modifies the band structure. Electronic structure calculations can account for non-rigid Lifshitz-type band structure changes in thin CrSBr as a function of doping and strain. In contrast to undoped bulk band structure calculations that require self-consistent $GW$ theory, the doped thin film properties are well-approximated by density functional theory if local Coulomb interactions are taken into account on the mean-field level and the charge transfer is considered.

The Hubbard model provides an idealized description of electronic correlations in solids. Despite its simplicity, the model features a competition between several different phases that have made it one of the most studied systems in theoretical physics. Real materials usually deviate from the ideal of the Hubbard model in several ways, but the monolayer of Nb$_3$Cl$_8$ has recently appeared as a potentially optimal candidate for the realization of such a single-orbital Hubbard model. Here we show how this single orbital Hubbard model can be indeed constructed within a "molecular" rather than atomic basis set using ab initio constrained random phase approximation calculations. This way, we provide the essential ingredients to connect experimental reality with ab initio material descriptions and correlated electron theory, which clarifies that monolayer Nb$_3$Cl$_8$ is a Mott insulator with a gap of about 1 to 1.2eV depending on its dielectric environment. By comparing with an atomistic three-orbital model, we show that the single molecular orbital description is indeed adequate. We furthermore comment on the expected electronic and magnetic structure of the compound and show that the Mott insulating state survives in the low-temperature and bulk phases of the material., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

In this review we discuss the latest results concerning development of the machine learning algorithms for characterization of the magnetic skyrmions that are topologically-protected magnetic textures originated from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction that competes Heisenberg isotropic exchange in ferromagnets. We show that for classical spin systems there is a whole pool of machine approaches allowing their accurate phase classification and quantitative description on the basis of few magnetization snapshots. In turn, investigation of the quantum skyrmions is a less explored issue, since there are fundamental limitations on the simulation of such wave functions with classical supercomputers. One needs to find the ways to imitate quantum skyrmions on near-term quantum computers. In this respect, we discuss implementation of the method for estimating structural complexity of classical objects for characterization of the quantum skyrmion state on the basis of limited number of bitstrings obtained from the projective measurements.

We explore the electronic structure of paramagnetic CrSBr by comparative first principles calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We theoretically approximate the paramagnetic phase using a supercell hosting spin configurations with broken long-range order and applying quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ theory, without and with the inclusion of excitonic vertex corrections to the screened Coulomb interaction (QS$GW$ and QS$G\hat{W}$, respectively). Comparing the quasi-particle band structure calculations to angle-resolved photoemission data collected at 200 K results in excellent agreement. This allows us to qualitatively explain the significant broadening of some bands as arising from the broken magnetic long-range order and/or electronic dispersion perpendicular to the quasi two-dimensional layers of the crystal structure. The experimental band gap at 200 K is found to be at least 1.51 eV at 200 K. At lower temperature, no photoemission data can be collected as a result of charging effects, pointing towards a significantly larger gap, which is consistent with the calculated band gap of $\approx$ 2.1 eV., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

We develop a strong-coupling perturbation scheme for a generic Hubbard model around a half-filled particle-hole-symmetric reference system, which is free from the fermionic sign problem. The approach is based on the lattice determinantal Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method in continuous and discrete time versions for large periodic clusters in a fermionic bath. Considering the first-order perturbation in the shift of the chemical potential and of the second-neighbour hopping gives an accurate electronic spectral function for a parameter range corresponding to the optimally doped cuprate system for temperature of the order of $T=0.1t$, the region hardly accessible for the straightforward lattice QMC calculations. We discuss the formation of the pseudogap and the nodal-antinodal dichotomy for a doped Hubbard system in a strong-coupling regime with the interaction parameter $U$ equal to the bandwidth and the optimal value of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping parameter $t'$ for high-temperature superconducting cuprates., Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures

Monolayer CrSBr is a recently discovered semiconducting spin-3/2 ferromagnet with a Curie temperature around 146 K. Unlike many other known two-dimensional (2D) magnets, CrSBr has an orthorhombic lattice, giving rise, for instance, to spatial anisotropy of the magnetic excitations within the 2D plane. Theoretical description of CrSBr within a spin Hamiltonian approach turns out to be nontrivial due to the triaxial magnetic anisotropy as well as due to magnetic dipolar interactions, comparable to spin-orbit effects in CrSBr. Here, we employ a Green's function formalism combined with first-principles calculations to systematically study the magnetic properties of monolayer CrSBr in different regimes of surrounding dielectric screening. We find that the magnetic anisotropy and thermodynamical properties of CrSBr depend significantly on the Coulomb interaction and its external screening. In the free-standing limit, the system turns out to be close to an easy-plane magnet, whose long-range ordering is partially suppressed. On the contrary, in the regime of large external screening, monolayer CrSBr behaves like an easy-axis ferromagnet with more stable magnetic ordering. Despite being relatively large, the magnetic dipolar interactions have only little effect on the magnetic properties. While the pseudogap dominates the phase diagram of hole-doped cuprates, connecting the antiferromagnetic parent insulator at low doping to the strange metal at higher doping, its origin and relation to superconductivity remains unknown. In order to proceed, a complete understanding of how the single hole - initially localized in the Mott state - becomes mobile and ultimately evolves into a coherent quasiparticle at the end of the superconducting dome is required. In order to affect this development, we examine recent transport and spectroscopic studies of hole-doped cuprates across their phase diagram. In the process, we highlight a set of empirical correlations between the superfluid density and certain normal state properties of hole-doped cuprates that offer fresh insights into the emergence of metallicity within the CuO_2 plane and its influence on the robustness of the superconducting state. We conclude by arguing that the overall behavior is best understood in terms of two distinct current-carrying fluids, only one of which dominates the superconducting condensate and is gapped out below the pseudogap endpoint at a critical hole concentration p^\ast.

Two-dimensional honeycomb ferromagnets offer the unprecedented opportunity to study interactions between collective modes that in standard bulk ferromagnets do not cross paths. Indeed, they harbor an optical spin-wave branch, i.e. a spin wave which disperses weakly near the Brillouin zone center. When doped with free carriers, they also host the typical gapless plasmonic mode of 2D itinerant electron/hole systems. When the plasmon branch meets the optical spin-wave branch, energy and momentum matching occurs, paving the way for interactions between the charge and spin sector. In this Letter we present a microscopic theory of such plasmon-magnon interactions, which is based on a double random phase approximation. Although chromium trihalides are widely regarded as a promising class of two-dimensional magnets for next-generation devices, an accurate description of their electronic structure and magnetic interactions has proven challenging to achieve. Here, we quantify electronic excitations and spin interactions in Cr$X_3$ ($X=$~Cl, Br, I) using embedded many-body wavefunction calculations and fully generalized spin Hamiltonians. We find that the three trihalides feature comparable $d$-shell excitations, consisting of a high-spin $^4A_2$ $(t^3_{2g}e^0_{g})$ ground state lying 1.5$-$1.7 eV below the first excited state $^4T_2$ ($t^2_{2g}e^1_{g}$). CrCl$_3$ exhibits a single-ion anisotropy $A_{\rm sia} = -0.02$ meV, while the Cr spin-3/2 moments are ferromagnetically coupled through bilinear and biquadratic exchange interactions of $J_1 = -0.97$ meV and $J_2 = -0.05$ meV, respectively. The corresponding values for CrBr$_3$ and CrI$_3$ increase to $A_{\rm sia} = -0.08$ meV and $A_{\rm sia} = -0.12$ meV for the single-ion anisotropy, $J_1 = -1.21$ meV, $J_2 = -0.05$ meV and $J_1 = -1.38$ meV, $J_2 = -0.06$ meV for the exchange couplings, respectively. We find that the overall magnetic anisotropy is defined by the interplay between $A_{\rm sia}$ and $A_{\rm dip}$ due to magnetic dipole-dipole interaction that favors in-plane orientation of magnetic moments in ferromagnetic monolayers and bulk layered magnets. The competition between the two contributions sets CrCl$_3$ and CrI$_3$ as the easy-plane ($A_{\rm sia}+ A_{\rm dip} > 0$) and easy-axis ($A_{\rm sia}+ A_{\rm dip} < 0$) ferromagnets, respectively. The differences between the magnets trace back to the atomic radii of the halogen ligands and the magnitude of spin-orbit coupling. The non-trivial phase structure of the eigenstates of many-body quantum systems severely limits the applicability of quantum Monte Carlo, variational, and machine learning methods. Here, we study real-valued signful ground-state wave functions of frustrated quantum spin systems and, assuming that the tasks of finding wave function amplitudes and signs can be separated, show that the signs can be easily bootstrapped from the amplitudes. We map the problem of finding the sign structure to an auxiliary classical Ising model defined on a subset of the Hilbert space basis. We show that the Ising model does not exhibit significant frustrations even for highly frustrated parental quantum systems, and is solvable with a fully deterministic $O(K\log K)$-time combinatorial algorithm (where $K$ is the Ising model size). Given the ground state amplitudes, we reconstruct the signs of the ground states of several frustrated quantum models, thereby revealing the hidden simplicity of many-body sign structures., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures in the main text; 9 pages, 4 figures in the supplemental information

Many strongly correlated transition metal insulators are colored, even though they have large fundamental band gaps and no quasi-particle excitations in the visible range. Why such insulators possess the colors they do poses a serious challenge for any many-body theory to reliably pick up the interactions responsible for the color. We pick two archetypal cases as examples: NiO with green color and MnF\textsubscript{2} with pink color. The body of literature around the collective charge transitions (excitons) that are responsible for the color in these and other strongly correlated systems, often fail to disentangle two important factors: what makes them form and what makes them optically bright. An adequate answer requires a theoretical approach able to compute such excitations in periodic crystals, reliably and without free parameters -- a formidable challenge. We employ two kinds of advanced \emph{ab initio} many body Green's function theories to investigate both optical and spin susceptibilities. The first, a perturbative theory based on low-order extensions of the $GW$ approximation, is able to explain the color in NiO, and indeed well describe the dielectric response over the entire frequency spectrum, while the same theory is unable to explain why MnF\textsubscript{2} is pink. We show its color originates from higher order spin-flip transitions that modify the optical response. This phenomenon is not captured by low-order perturbation theory, but it is contained in dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), which has a dynamical spin-flip vertex that contributes to the charge susceptibility. We show that symmetry lowering mechanisms, such as spin-orbit coupling, odd-parity phonons and Jan-Teller distortions, determine how `bright' these excitons are, but are not fundamental to their existence., Comment: 19 pages and 8 figures

In narrow-band systems, correlated contribution to effective hopping becomes important, and one needs to carefully consider three types of hopping processes: between doubly and singly occupied sites, between singly occupied and empty sites, and between doubly occupied and empty or two singly occupied sites. All three hopping parameters cannot vanish simultaneously, and one should specify for which of these processes the band becomes flat. By means of exact diagonalization of finite systems we demonstrate that three hoppings play qualitatively different roles in many-body effects, in particular, in the formation of half-metallic ferromagnetic (Nagaoka) states., Comment: v3: minor corrections after acceptance for publication; v2: fix definitions of hoppings, update figures, add connection to real materials; v1: 5 pages, 1 figure in the main text, 1 figure in the supplemental information

Crystalline black nitrogen (BN) is an allotrope of nitrogen with the black phosphorus (BP) structure recently synthesized at high pressure by two independent research groups [Ji et al., Sci. Adv. 6, eaba9206 (2020); Laniel et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 216001 (2020)]. Here, we present a systematic study of the electronic and optical properties of BN focusing on its comparison with BP. To this end, we use the state-of-the-art quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ approach with vertex corrections in both the electronic and optical channels. Despite many similarities, the properties of BN are found to be considerably different. Unlike BP, BN exhibits a larger optical gap (2.5 vs 0.26 eV), making BN transparent in the visible spectral region with a highly anisotropic optical response. This difference can be primarily attributed to a considerably reduced dielectric screening in BN, leading to enhancement of the effective Coulomb interaction. Despite relatively strong Coulomb interaction, exciton formation is largely suppressed in both materials. Excitons with large binding energies $\sim$2-3 eV in CrX$_{3}$ are historically characterized as being localized (Frenkel) excitons that emerge from the atomic $d{-}d$ transitions between the Cr-3$d$-$t_{2g}$ and $e_{g}$ orbitals. The argument has gathered strength in recent years as the excitons in recently made monolayers are found at almost the same energies as the bulk. The Laporte rule, which restricts such parity forbidden atomic transitions, can relax if, at least, one element is present: spin-orbit coupling, odd-parity phonons or Jahn-Teller distortion. While what can be classified as a purely Frenkel exciton is a matter of definition, we show using an advanced first principles parameter-free approach that these excitons in CrX$_{3}$, in both its bulk and monolayer variants, have band-origin and do not require the relaxation of Laporte rule as a fundamental principle. We show that, the character of these excitons is mostly determined by the Cr-$d$ orbital manifold, nevertheless, they appear only as a consequence of X-p states hybridizing with the Cr-$d$. The hybridization enhances as the halogen atom becomes heavier, bringing the X-$p$ states closer to the Cr-$d$ states in the sequence Cl{\textrightarrow}Br{\textrightarrow}I, with an attendant increase in exciton intensity and decrease in binding energy. By applying a range of different kinds of perturbations, we show that, moderate changes to the two-particle Hamiltonian that essentially modifies the Cr-$d$-X-$p$ hybridization, can alter both the intensities and positions of the exciton peaks. A detailed analysis of several deep lying excitons, with and without strain, reveals that the exciton is most Frenkel like in CrCl$_{3}$ and acquires mixed Frenkel-Wannier character in CrI$_{3}$., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures

First principles approaches have been successful in solving many-body Hamiltonians for real materials to an extent when correlations are weak or moderate. As the electronic correlations become stronger often embedding methods based on first principles approaches are used to better treat the correlations by solving a suitably chosen many-body Hamiltonian with a higher level theory. Such combined methods are often referred to as second principles approaches. At such level of the theory the self energy, i.e. the functional that embodies the stronger electronic correlations, is either a function of energy or momentum or both. The success of such theories is commonly measured by the quality of the self energy functional. However, self-consistency in the self-energy should, in principle, also change the real space charge distribution in a correlated material and be able to modify the electronic eigenfunctions, which is often undermined in second principles approaches. Here we study the impact of charge self-consistency within two example cases: TiSe$_{2}$, a three-dimensional charge-density-wave candidate material, and CrBr$_{3}$, a two-dimensional ferromagnet, and show how real space charge re-distribution due to correlation effects taken into account within a first principles Green's function based many-body perturbative approach is key in driving qualitative changes to the final electronic structure of these materials., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We explore the electronic band structure of free standing monolayers of chromium trihalides, CrX\textsubscript{3}{, X= Cl, Br, I}, within an advanced \emph{ab-initio} theoretical approach based in the use of Green's function functionals. We compare the local density approximation with the quasi-particle self-consistent \emph{GW} approximation (QS\emph{GW}) and its self-consistent extension (QS$G\widehat{W}$) by solving the particle-hole ladder Bethe-Salpeter equations to improve the effective interaction \emph{W}. We show that at all levels of theory, the valence band consistently changes shape in the sequence Cl{\textrightarrow}Br{\textrightarrow}I, and the valence band maximum shifts from the M point to the $\Gamma$ point. However, the details of the transition, the one-particle bandgap, and the eigenfunctions change considerably going up the ladder to higher levels of theory. The eigenfunctions become more directional, and at the M point there is a strong anisotropy in the effective mass. Also the dynamic and momentum dependent self energy shows that QS$G\widehat{W}$ adds to the localization of the systems in comparison to the QS\emph{GW} thereby leading to a narrower band and reduced amount of halogens in the valence band manifold.

We consider the mapping of tight-binding electronic structure theory to a local spin Hamiltonian, based on the adiabatic approximation for spin degrees of freedom in itinerant-electron systems. Local spin Hamiltonians are introduced in order to describe the energy landscape of small magnetic fluctuations, locally around a given spin configuration. They are designed for linear response near a given magnetic state and in general insufficient to capture arbitrarily strong deviations of spin configurations from the equilibrium. In order to achieve this mapping, we include a linear term in the local spin Hamiltonian that, together with the usual bilinear exchange tensor, produces an improved accuracy of effective magnetic Weiss fields for non-collinear states. We also provide examples from tight-binding electronic structure theory, where our implementation of the calculation of exchange constants is based on constraining fields that stabilize an out-of-equilibrium spin configuration. We check our formalism by means of numerical calculations for iron dimers and chains., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

The many-body theory of interacting electrons poses an intrinsically difficult problem that requires simplifying assumptions. For the determination of electronic screening properties of the Coulomb interaction, the Random Phase Approximation (RPA) provides such a simplification. Here, we explicitly show that this approximation is justified for band structures with sizeable band gaps. This is when the electronic states responsible for the screening are energetically far away from the Fermi level, which is equivalent to a short electronic propagation length of these states. The RPA contains exactly those diagrams in which the classical Coulomb interaction covers all distances, whereas neglected vertex corrections involve quantum tunneling through the barrier formed by the band gap. Our analysis of electron-electron interactions provides a real-space analogy to Migdal's theorem on the smallness of vertex corrections in electron-phonon problems. An important application is the increasing use of constrained Random Phase Approximation (cRPA) calculations of effective interactions. We find that their usage of Kohn-Sham energies already accounts for the leading local (excitonic) vertex correction in insulators.

Chromium triiodide is an intrinsically magnetic van der Waals material down to the single-layer limit. Here, we provide a first-principles description of finite-temperature magnetic and spectral properties of monolayer (ML) CrI$_3$ based on fully charge self-consistent density functional theory (DFT) combined with dynamical mean-field theory, revealing a formation of local moments on Cr from strong local Coulomb interactions. We show that the presence of local dynamical correlations leads to a modification of the electronic structure of ferromagnetically ordered CrI$_3$. In contrast to conventional DFT+$U$ calculations, we find that the top of the valence band in ML CrI$_3$ demonstrates essentially different orbital character for minority and majority spin states, which is closer to the standard DFT results. This leads to a strong spin polarization of the optical conductivity upon hole doping, which could be verified experimentally., Comment: Final version; 9 pages, 4 figures

We present a purely diagrammatic derivation of the dual fermion scheme [Phys. Rev. B 77 (2008) 033101]. The derivation makes particularly clear that a similar scheme can be developed for an arbitrary reference system provided it has the same interaction term as the original system. Thereby no restrictions are imposed by the locality of the reference problem or by the nature of the original problem as a lattice one. We present new arguments in favour of keeping the dual denominator in the expression for the lattice self-energy independently of the truncation of the dual interaction. As an example we present the computational results for the half-filled 2D Hubbard model with the choice of a $2\times2$ plaquette with periodic boundary conditions as a reference system. We observe that obtained results are in a good agreement with numerically exact lattice quantum Monte Carlo data.

Despite serious effort, the nature of the magnetic interactions and the role of electron-correlation effects in magnetic two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials remain elusive. Using CrI$_3$ as a model system, we show that the calculated electronic structure including nonlocal electron correlations yields spin excitations consistent with inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Remarkably, this approach identifies an unreported correlation-enhanced interlayer super-superexchange, which rotates the magnon Dirac lines off, and introduces a gap along, the high-symmetry $\Gamma$-$K$-$M$ path. This discovery provides a different perspective on the gap opening mechanism observed in CrI$_3$, which was previously associated with spin-orbit coupling through the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction or Kitaev interaction. Our observation elucidates the critical role of electron correlations on the spin ordering and spin dynamics in magnetic van der Waals materials and demonstrates the necessity of explicit treatment of electron correlations in the broad family of 2D magnetic materials., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

First-principles calculations and a model consideration of magnetically frustrated layered material PdCrO$_2$ are performed. The results on the exchange parameters are in agreement with the experimental data on the Curie-Weiss temperature ($\theta$). We show that experimentally observed strong suppression of the N\'eel temperature ($T_N$) in comparison with the Curie-Weiss temperature is due to three main factors. First, as expected, this is connected with the layered structure and relatively small exchange interaction along the $c$ axis. Second, deformation of the ideal in-plane 120$^{\circ}$ magnetic structure is crucial to provide finite $T_N$ value. However, these two factors are still insufficient to explain low $T_N$ and the large frustration factor $|\theta|/T_N$. Thus, we suggest a scenario of an exotic non-Fermi-liquid state in PdCrO$_2$ above $T_N$ within the frameworks of the Anderson lattice model, which seems to explain qualitatively all its main peculiarities.

We propose a reversible mechanism for switching Heisenberg-type exchange interactions between deposited transition metal adatoms from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic. Using first-principles calculations, we show that this mechanism can be realized for cobalt atoms on the surface of black phosphorus by making use of electrically-controlled orbital repopulation, as recently demonstrated by scanning probe techniques [Nat. Commun. 9, 3904 (2018)]. We find that field-induced repopulation not only affects the spin state, but also causes considerable modification of exchange interaction between adatoms, including its sign. Our model analysis demonstrates that variable adatom-substrate hybridization is a key factor responsible for this modification. We perform quantum simulations of inelastic tunneling characteristics and discuss possible ways to verify the proposed mechanism experimentally., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We develop nonequilibrium auxiliary quantum master equation dual boson method (aux-DB), and argue that it presents a convenient way to describe steady states of correlated impurity models (such as single molecule optoelectronic devices) where electron and energy transport should be taken into account. The aux-DB is shown to provide high accuracy with relatively low numerical cost. We use a Luttinger-Ward functional approach to study the problem of phonon-mediated superconductivity in electron systems with strong electron-electron interactions (EEIs). Our derivation does not rely on an expansion in skeleton diagrams for the EEI and the resulting theory is therefore nonperturbative in the strength of the latter. We show that one of the building blocks of the theory is the irreducible six-leg vertex related to EEIs. Diagrammatically, this implies five contributions (one of the Fock and four of the Hartree type) to the electronic self-energy, which, to the best of our knowledge, have never been discussed in the literature. We analyze fermionic response of strongly correlated holographic matter in presence of inhomogeneous periodically modulated potential mimicking the crystal lattice. The modulation is sourced by a scalar operator that explicitly breaks the translational symmetry in one direction. We compute the fermion spectral function and show that it either exhibits a well defined Fermi surface with umklapp gaps opening on the Brillouin zone boundary at small lattice wave vector, or, when the wave vector is large, the Fermi surface is anisotropically deformed and the quasiparticles get significantly broadened in the direction of translation symmetry breaking. Making use of the ability of our model to smoothly extrapolate to the homogeneous Q-lattice like setup, we show that this novel effect is not due to the periodic modulation of the potential and Umklapp physics, but rather due to the anisotropic features of the holographic horizon. That means it encodes novel physics of strongly correlated critical systems which may be relevant for phenomenology of exotic states of electron matter., Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures

We present an infinite-dimensional lattice of two-by-two plaquettes, the quadruple Bethe lattice, with Hubbard interaction and solve it exactly by means of the cluster dynamical mean-field theory. It exhibits a $d$-wave superconducting phase that is related to a highly degenerate point in the phase diagram of the isolated plaquette at that the groundstates of the particle number sectors $N=2,3,4$ cross. The superconducting gap is formed by the renormalized lower Slater peak of the correlated, hole-doped Mott insulator. We engineer parts of the interaction and find that pair hoppings between $X/Y$-momenta are the main two-particle correlations of the superconducting phase. The suppression of the superconductivity in the overdoped regime is caused by the diminishing of pair hopping correlations and in the underdoped regime by charge blocking. The optimal doping is $\sim 0.15$ at which the underlying normal state shows a Lifshitz transition. The model allows for different intra- and inter-plaquette hoppings that we use to disentangle superconductivity from antiferromagnetism as the latter requires larger inter-plaquette hoppings., Comment: 16 pages, 19 figures

A properly strained graphene monolayer or bilayer is expected to harbour periodic pseudo-magnetic fields with high symmetry, yet to date, a convincing demonstration of such pseudo-magnetic fields has been lacking, especially for bilayer graphene. Here, we report the first definitive experimental proof for the existence of large-area, periodic pseudo-magnetic fields, as manifested by vortex lattices in commensurability with the moir\'e patterns of low-angle twisted bilayer graphene. The pseudo-magnetic fields are strong enough to confine the massive Dirac electrons into circularly localized pseudo-Landau levels, as observed by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, and also corroborated by tight-binding calculations. We further demonstrate that the geometry, amplitude, and periodicity of the pseudo-magnetic field can be fine-tuned by both the rotation angle and heterostrain applied to the system. Collectively, the present study substantially enriches twisted bilayer graphene as a powerful enabling platform for exploration of new and exotic physical phenomena, including quantum valley Hall effects and quantum anomalous Hall effects., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

A considerable success in phenomenological description of high-T$_{\rm c}$ superconductors has been achieved within the paradigm of Quantum Critical Point (QCP) - a parental state of a variety of exotic phases that is characterized by dense entanglement and absence of well-defined quasiparticles. However, the microscopic origin of the critical regime in real materials remains an open question. On the other hand, there is a popular view that a single-band $t-t'$ Hubbard model is the minimal model to catch the main relevant physics of superconducting compounds. Here, we suggest that emergence of the QCP is tightly connected with entanglement in real space and identify its location on the phase diagram of the hole-doped $t-t'$ Hubbard model. To detect the QCP we study a weighted graph of inter-site quantum mutual information within a four-by-four plaquette that is solved by exact diagonalization. We demonstrate that some quantitative characteristics of such a graph, viewed as a complex network, exhibit peculiar behavior around a certain submanifold in the parametric space of the model. The theory of correlated electrons is currently moving beyond the paradigmatic Hubbard $U$, towards the investigation of intersite Coulomb interactions. Recent investigations have revealed that these interactions are relevant for the quantitative description of realistic materials. Physically, intersite interactions are responsible for two rather different effects: screening and bandwidth renormalization. We use a variational principle to disentangle the roles of these two processes and study how appropriate the recently proposed Fock treatment of intersite interactions is in correlated systems. The magnitude of this effect in graphene is calculated based on cRPA values of the intersite interaction. We consider the interaction-driven Mott transition at zero temperature from the viewpoint of microscopic Fermi liquid theory. To this end, we derive an exact expression for the Landau parameters within the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) approximation to the single-band Hubbard model. At the Mott transition the symmetric and the anti-symmetric Landau parameter diverge. The vanishing compressibility at the Mott transition directly implies the divergence of the forward scattering amplitude in the charge sector, which connects the proximity of the Mott phase to a tendency towards phase separation. We verify the expected behavior of the Landau parameters in a DMFT application to the Hubbard model on the triangular lattice at finite temperature. Exact conservation laws and the Ward identity are crucial to capture vertex divergences related to the Mott transition. We furthermore generalize Leggett's formula for the static susceptibility of the Fermi liquid to the static fermion-boson response function. We derive an expression for the effective Josephson coupling from the microscopic Hubbard model. It serves as a starting point for the description of phase fluctuations of local Cooper pairs in $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductors in the framework of an effective $XY$ model of plaquettes, the Josephson lattice. The expression for the effective interaction is derived by means of the local-force theorem, and it depends on local symmetry-broken correlation functions that we obtain using the cluster dynamical mean-field theory. In the study of strongly interacting systems, correlations on the two-particle level are receiving more and more attention. In this work, we study a particular two-particle correlation function: the fermion-boson vertex. It describes the response of the Green's function when an external field is applied and is an important ingredient of diagrammatic extensions of Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. We provide several perspectives on this object, using Ward identities, sum rules, perturbative analysis and asymptotic relations. In this paper, we address the question of stability of protected chiral modes (e.g., helical edge states at the boundary of two-dimensional topological insulators) upon interactions with the external bath. Namely, we study how backscattering amplitude changes when different interaction channels between the system and the environment are present. Depending on the relative strength of the Coulomb and spin-spin channels, we discover three different possible regimes. While the Coulomb interaction on its own naturally amplifies the backscattering and destroys the protection of chiral modes, and the spin-spin channel marginally suppresses backscattering, their interplay can make the backscattering process strictly irrelevant, opening the possibility to use the external spin bath as a stabilizer that alleviates destructive effects and restores the chirality protection., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; a number of references added, discussion improved

We apply the dual fermion approach with a second-order approximation to the self-energy to the Mott transition in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. The approximation captures nonlocal dynamical short-range correlations as well as several features observed in studies using cluster dynamical mean-field theory. This includes a strong reduction of the critical interaction and inversion of the slope of the transition lines with respect to single-site dynamical mean-field theory. We show that these effects coincide with a much smaller momentum differentiation compared to cluster methods. Materials with $sp$-magnetism demonstrate strongly nonlocal Coulomb interactions, which opens a way to probe correlations in the regimes not achievable in transition metal compounds. By the example of Sn monolayer on SiC(0001) surface, we show that such systems exhibit unusual but intriguing magnetic properties at the nanoscale. Physically, this is attributed to the presence of a significant ferromagnetic coupling, the so-called direct exchange, which fully compensates ubiquitous antiferromagnetic interactions of the superexchange origin. Having a nonlocal nature, the direct exchange was previously ignored because it cannot be captured within the conventional density functional methods and significantly challenges ground state models earlier proposed for Sn/SiC(0001). Furthermore, heavy adatoms induce strong spin-orbit coupling, which leads to a highly anisotropic form of the spin Hamiltonian, in which the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is dominant. The latter is suggested to be responsible for the formation of a nanoskyrmion state at realistic magnetic fields and temperatures., Comment: 4 pages, supplemental material

We address the question of the stability of the (fractional) quantum Hall effect (QHE) in presence of pseudomagnetic disorder generated by mechanical deformations of a graphene sheet. Neglecting the potential disorder and taking into account only strain-induced random pseudomagnetic fields, it is possible to write down a Laughlin-like trial ground-state wave function explicitly. Exploiting the Laughlin plasma analogy, we demonstrate that in the case of fluctuating pseudomagnetic fluxes of relatively small amplitude both the integer and fractional quantum Hall effects are always stable upon the deformations. By contrast, in the case of bubble-induced pseudomagnetic fields in graphene on a substrate (a small number of large fluxes) the disorder can be strong enough to cause a glass transition in the corresponding classical Coulomb plasma, resulting in the destruction of fractional quantum Hall regime and in a quantum phase transition to a non-ergodic state of the lowest Landau level., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We discuss the calculation of the double occupancy using Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT) in finite dimensions. The double occupancy can be determined from the susceptibility of the auxiliary impurity model or from the lattice susceptibility. The former method underestimates, whereas the latter overestimates the double occupancy. We illustrate this for the square-lattice Hubbard model. We propose an approach for which both methods lead to identical results by construction and which resolves this ambiguity. We study the dynamical magnetic susceptibility of a strongly correlated electronic system in the presence of a time-dependent hopping field, deriving a generalized Bethe-Salpeter equation which is valid also out of equilibrium. Focusing on the single-orbital Hubbard model within the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation, we solve the equation in the non-equilibrium adiabatic regime, obtaining a closed expression for the transverse magnetic susceptibility. Time-dependent spin phenomena in condensed matter are most often either described in the weakly correlated limit of metallic Stoner/Slater-like magnetism via band theory or in the strongly correlated limit of Heisenberg-like interacting spins in an insulator. We report the temperature $T$ and magnetic field $H$ dependence of the thermopower $S$ of an itinerant triangular antiferromagnet PdCrO$_2$ in high magnetic fields up to 32 T. In the paramagnetic phase, the zero-field thermopower is positive with a value typical of good metals with a high carrier density. In marked contrast to typical metals, however, $S$ decreases rapidly with increasing magnetic field, approaching zero at the maximum field scale for $T >$ 70 K. We argue here that this profound change in the thermoelectric response derives from the strong interaction of the 4$d$ correlated electrons of the Pd ions with the short-range spin correlations of the Cr$^{3+}$ spins that persist beyond the N\'{e}el ordering temperature due to the combined effects of geometrical frustration and low dimensionality., Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures in Main text + 4 pages and 5 figures in Supplementary material

We derive a set of equations expressing the parameters of the magnetic interactions characterizing a strongly correlated electronic system in terms of single-electron Green's functions and self-energies. This allows to establish a mapping between the initial electronic system and a spin model including up to quadratic interactions between the effective spins, with a general interaction (exchange) tensor that accounts for anisotropic exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and other symmetric terms such as dipole-dipole interaction. We use the dual boson approach to reveal the phase diagram of the Fermi-Hubbard model with long-range dipole-dipole interactions. By using a large-scale finite-temperature calculation on a $64 \times 64$ square lattice we demonstrate the existence of a novel phase, possessing an `ultralong-range' order. The fingerprint of this phase -- the density correlation function -- features a non-trivial behavior on a scale of tens of the lattice sites. We study the properties and the stability of the ultralong-range ordered phase, and show that it is accessible in modern experiments with ultracold polar molecules and magnetic atoms.

We consider the thermodynamic consistency of the charge response function in the (extended) Hubbard model. In DMFT, thermodynamic consistency is preserved. We prove that the static, homogeneous DMFT susceptibility is consistent as long as vertex corrections obtained from the two-particle impurity correlation function are included. In presence of a nonlocal interaction, the problem may be treated within extended DMFT (EDMFT), or its diagrammatic extension, the dual boson approach. We show that here, maintaining thermodynamic consistency requires knowledge of three- and four-particle impurity correlation functions, which are typically neglected. Nevertheless, the dual boson approximation to the response is remarkably close to consistency. This holds even when two-particle vertex corrections are neglected. We present a technique to map an electronic model with local interactions (a generalized multi-orbital Hubbard model) onto an effective model of interacting classical spins, by requiring that the thermodynamic potentials associated to spin rotations in the two systems are equivalent up to second order in the rotation angles. This allows to determine the parameters of relativistic and non-relativistic magnetic interactions in the effective spin model in terms of equilibrium Green's functions of the electronic model. The Hamiltonian of the electronic system includes, in addition to the non-relativistic part, relativistic single-particle terms such as the Zeeman coupling to an external magnetic fields, spin-orbit coupling, and arbitrary magnetic anisotropies; the orbital degrees of freedom of the electrons are explicitly taken into account. We determine the complete relativistic exchange tensors, accounting for anisotropic exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, as well as additional non-diagonal symmetric terms (which may include dipole-dipole interaction). Our procedure provides the complete exchange tensors in a unified framework, including previously disregarded features such as the vertices of two-particle Green's functions and non-local self-energies. We do not assume any smallness in spin-orbit coupling, so our treatment is in this sense exact.
