Deconfined quantum critical points (DQCPs) are proposed as unconventional second-order phase transitions beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm. The nature and experimental realizations of DQCPs are crucial issues of importance. We illustrate the potential for DQCPs between the valence bond solid state and the antiferromagnetic phase to arise in optical lattices containing frustrated dipolar bosons subject to hard-core constraints. The emergence of DQCPs is comprehended through the fusion of two Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transitions. The DQCPs and the BKTs are confirmed by the finite-size scaling of ground-state fidelity susceptibilities. The numerical analysis reveals varying critical exponents of the correlation length in DQCPs and the logarithmic scaling in BKTs, respectively. We study many-body phase transitions in a one-dimensional ferromagnetic transversed field Ising model with an imaginary field and show that the system exhibits three phase transitions: one second-order phase transition and two $\mathcal{PT}$ phase transitions. The second-order phase transition occurring in the ground state is investigated via biorthogonal and self-normal entanglement entropy, for which we develop an approach to perform finite-size scaling theory to extract the central charge for small systems. Compared with the second-order phase transition, the first $\mathcal{PT}$ transition is characterized by the appearance of an exceptional point in the full energy spectrum, while the second $\mathcal{PT}$ transition only occurs in specific excited states. Furthermore, we interestingly show that both of exceptional points are second-order in terms of scalings of imaginary parts of the energy. Recently, much attention has been paid to uncovering the influence of dissipation on a quantum system, particularly on how the non-Hermitian (NH) terms modify the band topology of topological materials and reshape the profile of the wavefunctions of a system (or the NH skin effect). In this paper, a specific NH skin effect that induced by local dissipation is studied for chiral edge modes, in which the NH term corresponds to the local imaginary Fermi velocity of the chiral edge modes. By solving the NH Schr\"{o}dinger equation of the non-Hermitian chiral edge modes (nhCEs) with complex Fermi velocity, we uncovered the remarkable complex spectra and the wavefunctions of the nhCEs. We find that the complex spectra of these modes is a straight line in the topological materials, and its chirality can separates the modes with positive energy from those with negative energy, in which they are localized at different positions. We also studied the nhCEs at the boundary of 2-dimensional (2D) topological materials, the 2D $p$-wave superconductor and the Qi-Wu-Zhang model, in which the general law of nhCEs was verified. We classify the dissipative topological insulators (TIs) with edge dark states (EDS) by using the 38-fold way of non-Hermitian systems in this paper. The dissipative dynamics of these quadratic open fermionic systems is captured by a non-Hermitian single-particle matrix which contains both the internal dynamics and the dissipation, refereed to as damping matrix $X$. And the dark states in these systems are the eigenmodes of $X$ which the eigenvalues' imaginary part vanishes. However, there is a constraint on $X$, namely that the modes in which the eigenvalues' imaginary parts are positive are forbidden. In other words, the imaginary line-gap of $X$ is ill-defined, so the topological band theory classifying the dark states can not be applied to $X$. To reveal the topological protection of EDS, we propose the double damping matrix $\tilde{X} = \text{diag}\left( X, X^* \right)$, where the imaginary line-gap is well defined. Thus, the 38-fold way can be applied to $\tilde{X}$, and the topological protection of the EDS is uncovered. Different from previous studies of EDS in purely dissipative dynamics, the EDS in the dissipative TIs are robust against the inclusion of Hamiltonians. Furthermore, the topological classification of $\tilde{X}$ not only reflects the topological protection of EDS in dissipative TIs but also provides a paradigm to predict the appearance of EDS in other open free fermionic systems., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We show that non-Hermitian biorthogonal many-body phase transitions can be characterized by the enhanced decay of Loschmidt echo. The quantum criticality is numerically investigated in a non-Hermitian transverse field Ising model by performing the finite-size dynamical scaling of Loschmidt echo. We determine the equilibrium correlation length critical exponents that are consistent with previous results from the exact diagonalization. More importantly, we introduce a simple method to detect quantum phase transitions with the short-time average of rate function motivated by the critically enhanced decay behavior of Loschmidt echo. We develop the perturbation theory of the fidelity susceptibility in biorthogonal bases for arbitrary interacting non-Hermitian many-body systems with real eigenvalues. The quantum criticality in the non-Hermitian transverse field Ising chain is investigated by the second derivative of ground-state energy and the ground-state fidelity susceptibility. We show that the system undergoes a second-order phase transition with the Ising universal class by numerically computing the critical points and the critical exponents from the finite-size scaling theory. Interestingly, our results indicate that the biorthogonal quantum phase transitions are described by the biorthogonal fidelity susceptibility instead of the conventional fidelity susceptibility., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Landau's spontaneous symmetry breaking theory is a fundamental theory that describes the collective behaviors in many-body systems. It was well known that for usual spontaneous symmetry breaking in Hermitian systems, the order-disorder phase transition with gap closing and spontaneous symmetry breaking occur at the same critical point. In this paper, we generalized the Landau's spontaneous symmetry breaking theory to the cases in non-Hermitian (NH) many-body systems with biorthogonal Z2 symmetry and tried to discover certain universal features. We were surprised to find that the effect of the NH terms splits the spontaneous biorthogonal Z2 symmetry breaking from a (biorthogonal) order-disorder phase transition with gap closing. The sudden change of similarity for two degenerate ground states indicates a new type of quantum phase transition without gap closing accompanied by spontaneous biorthogonal Z2 symmetry breaking. We will take the NH transverse Ising model as an example to investigate the anomalous spontaneous symmetry breaking. The numerical results were consistent with the theoretical predictions.

The chiral QED$_3$--Gross-Neveu-Yukawa (QED$_3$-GNY) theory is a $2+1$-dimensional U(1) gauge theory with $N_f$ flavors of four-component Dirac fermions coupled to a scalar field. For $N_f=1$, the specific chiral Ising QED$_3$-GNY model has recently been conjectured to be dual to the deconfined quantum critical point that describes Neel--valence-bond-solid transition of frustrated quantum magnets on square lattice. We study the universal critical behaviors of the chiral QED$_3$-GNY model in $d=4-\epsilon$ dimensions for an arbitrary $N_f$ . We calculate the boson anomalous dimensions, inverse correlation length exponent, as well as the scaling dimensions of nonsinglet fermion bilinear in the chiral QED$_3$-GNY model. The Pad$\acute{e}$ estimates for the exponents are obtained in the chiral Ising-, XY- and Heisenberg-QED$_3$-GNY universality class respectively. We also establish the general condition of the supersymmetric criticality for the ungauged QED$_3$-GNY model. For the conjectured duality between chiral QED$_3$-GNY critical point and deconfined quantum critical point, we find the inverse correlation length exponent has a lower boundary $\nu^{-1}>0.75$, beyond which the Ising-QED$_3$-GNY--$\mathbb{C}$P$^1$ duality may hold., Comment: 15 pages,5 figures

The fluctuations-driven continuous quantum criticality has sparked tremendous interest in condensed matter physics. It has been verified that the gapless fermions fluctuations can change the nature of phase transition at criticality. In this paper, we study the fermionic quantum criticality with enlarged Ising$\times$Ising fluctuations in honeycomb lattice materials. The Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory for the multicriticality between the semimetallic phase and two ordered phases that break Ising symmetry is investigated by employing perturbative renormalization group approach. We first determine the critical range in which the quantum fluctuations may render the phase transition continuous. We find that the Ising criticality is continuous only when the flavor numbers of four-component Dirac fermions $N_f\geq1/4$. Using the $\epsilon$ expansion in four space-time dimensions, we then study the Ising$\times$Ising multicriticality stemming from the symmetry-breaking electronic instabilities. We analyze the underlying fixed-point structure and compute the critical exponents for the Ising$\times$Ising Gross-Neveu-Yukawa universality class. It was known that for non-Hermitian topological systems due to the non-Hermitian skin effect, the bulk-edge correspondence is broken down. In this paper, by using one-dimensional Su-SchriefferHeeger model and two-dimensional (deformed) Qi-Wu-Zhang model as examples, we focus on a special type of non-Hermitian topological system without non-Hermitian skin effect-topological systems under non-Hermitian similarity transformation. In these non-Hermitian systems, the defective edge states and the breakdown of bulk-edge correspondence are discovered. To characterize the topological properties, we introduce a new type of inversion symmetry-protected topological invariant-total Z2 topological invariant. In topological phases, defective edge states appear. With the help of the effective edge Hamiltonian, we find that the defective edge states are protected by (generalized) chiral symmetry and thus the (singular) defective edge states are unstable against the perturbation breaking the chiral symmetry. In addition, the results are generalized to nonHermitian topological insulators with inversion symmetry in higher dimensions. In this paper, based on a non-Hermitian toric-code model, we surprisingly find that the degeneracy of ground states can be changed by a local non-Hermitian perturbation (even in thermodynamic limit). We call it non-Hermitian avalanche effect. As the physics consequences of the non-Hermitian avalanche effect, a correspondence between bulk quasi-particles and topologically protected degenerate ground states for Z2 topological order is borken down. Unconventional lattice fermions with high degeneracies beyond Weyl and Dirac fermions have attracted intensive attention in recent years. In this paper, attention is drawn to the pseudospin-1 Maxwell fermions and the $(2+1)$ dimensional parity anomaly, which goes beyond the scope of "fermion doubling theorem". We have derived the Hall conductivity of a single Maxwell fermion, and showcased each Maxwell fermion contributes a quantized Hall conductance $e^{2}/h$. We observe that the parity is spontaneously broken in the effective theory of lattice Maxwell fermions interacting with an (auxiliary) $U(1)$ gauge field, leading to an effective anomaly-induced Chern-Simons theory. An interesting observation from the parity anomaly is that the lattice Maxwell fermions beyond the "fermion doubling theorem", so there exists single Maxwell fermion in a lattice model. Non-Hermitian topological systems show quite different properties as their Hermitian counterparts. An important, puzzled issue on non-Hermitian topological systems is the existence of defective edge states beyond usual bulk-boundary correspondence (BBC) that localize either on the left edge or the right edge of the one-dimensional system. In this paper, to understand the existence of the defective edge states, the theory of anomalous bulk-boundary correspondence (A-BBC) is developed that distinguishes the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence (NB-BBC) from non-Hermitian skin effect. By using the one-dimensional non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model as an example, the underlying physics of defective edge states is explored. The defective edge states are physics consequence of boundary exceptional points of anomalous edge Hamiltonian. In addition, with the help of a theorem, the number anomaly of the edge states in non-Hermitian topological systems become a mathematic problem under quantitative calculations by identifying the Abelian/non-Abelian non-Hermitian condition for edge Hamiltonian and verifying the deviation of the BBC ratio from 1. In the future, the theory for A-BBC can be generalized to higher dimensional non-Hermitian topological systems (for example, 2D Chern insulator).

Deconfined quantum critical point was proposed as a second-order quantum phase transition between two broken symmetry phases beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm. However, numerical studies cannot completely rule out a weakly first-order transition because of strong violations of finite-size scaling. We demonstrate that the fidelity is a simple probe to study deconfined quantum critical point. We study the ground-state fidelity susceptibility close to the deconfined quantum critical point in a spin chain using the large-scale finite-size density matrix renormalization group method. We find that the finite-size scaling of the fidelity susceptibility obeys the conventional scaling behavior for continuous phase transitions, supporting the deconfined quantum phase transition is continuous. We numerically determine the deconfined quantum critical point and the associated correlation length critical exponent from the finite-size scaling theory of the fidelity susceptibility. Our results are consistent with recent results obtained directly from the matrix product states for infinite-size lattices using others observables. In this paper we discuss the N$\acute{e}$el and Kekul$\acute{e}$ valence bond solids quantum criticality in graphene Dirac semimetal. Considering the quartic four-fermion interaction $g(\bar{\psi}_i\Gamma_{ij}\psi_j)^2$ that contains spin,valley, and sublattice degrees of freedom in the continuum field theory, we find the microscopic symmetry is spontaneously broken when the coupling $g$ is greater than a critical value $g_c$. The symmetry breaking gaps out the fermion and leads to semimetal-insulator transition. All possible quartic fermion-bilinear interactions give rise to the uniform critical coupling, which exhibits the multicritical point for various orders and the Landau-forbidden quantum critical point. We also investigate the typical critical point between N$\acute{e}$el and Kekul$\acute{e}$ valence bond solid transition when the symmetry is broken. The quantum criticality is captured by the Wess-Zumino-Witten term and there exist a mutual-duality for N$\acute{e}$el-Kekul$\acute{e}$ VBS order. We show the emergent spinon in the N$\acute{e}$el-Kekul$\acute{e}$ VBS transition , from which we conclude the phase transition is a deconfined quantum critical point. Additionally, the connection between the index theorem and zero energy mode bounded by the topological defect in the Kekul$\acute{e}$ VBS phase is studied to reveal the N$\acute{e}$el-Kekul$\acute{e}$ VBS duality., Comment: 11 pages, 0 figures

Recently, topological semimetals become hot topic in condensed matter physics, including Dirac semimetal, Weyl semimetal, and nodal line semimetal (NLSM). In this paper, a new type of node- line semimetal - type-II NLSM is proposed based on a two-band cubic lattice model. For type-II NLSM, the zero energy bulk states have a closed loop in momentum space but the (local) Weyl cones on nodal line become tilted. The effect of magnetic field and that of correlation on type-II NLSM are studied. In particular, after considering repulsive interaction and additional spin degrees of freedom, different types of long range magnetic orders appear in bulk states. In addition, the interaction-induced ferromagnetic order of surface states may exist. At critical point between type-I NLSM and type-II NLSM, arbitrary tiny interaction induces ferromagnetic order due to a flat band at Fermi surface.

Weyl semimetal (WSM) is an exotic topological state in condensed matter physics. In this paper, based on a two-band cubic lattice model, we studied WSMs with a pair of tunable Weyl nodes. It is pointed out that there exist three types of WSMs with different tilt strengths: type-I WSM, type-II WSM and type-1.5 WSM. In particular, type-1.5 WSM has one type-I node and one type-II node. We studied chiral modes, surface Fermi arcs and quantum anomalous Hall effect in different types of WSMs. In addition, we give an experimental setup to realize the different types of WSMs based on timely technique., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Manganites are famous mostly for the colossal magnetoresistive effect, which involves the phase separation between ferromagnetic phase and charge-ordered CE-type antiferromagnetic phases. Furthermore, manganites contain some typical magnetic ferroelectrics, e.g. E-type antiferromagnetic $o$-HoMnO$_3$. Here we re-examined these zigzag-winding antiferromagnetic phases (CE-type and E-type antiferromagnets) from the topological perspective. Our theoretical analysis proved that the E-type phase is a weak topological insulator belonging to the $\mathbb{Z}$ class. In momentum space, we classify the symmetries of this phase, and find the three symmetry operators for the chiral, particle-hole, and time-reversal symmetry. The CE-type phase can be described by the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau algebra, implying that it is a new class of topological insulator and hence extends the existing classification. The corresponding topological end states are demonstrated via numerical calculations, which may implicate the experimental observed ferromagnetic edge states in manganite strips (Nat. Topological insulators are new states of quantum matter with metallic edge/surface states. In this paper, we pointed out that there exists a new type of particle-hole symmetry-protected topological insulator - topological hierarchy insulator (THI), a composite topological state of a (parent) topological insulator and its defect-induced topological mid-gap states. A particular type of THI is topological fractal insulator, that is a THI with self-similar topological structure. Recently, Majorana fermions (MFs) have attracted intensive attention because of their possible non-Abelian statistics. This paper points out an approach to verify the non-Abelian statistics of MFs in topological superconductors. Ultracold atoms in optical lattice provides a platform to realize the superfluid (SF) state, a quantum order with paired charge-neutral fermions. In this paper, we studied SF state in the twodimensional attractive Hubbard model with pi-flux on each plaquette. The SF state in the pi-flux lattice model suffers very strong quantum fluctuations and the ground state becomes a possible quantum phase liquid state. In this phase, there exists the Cooper pairing together with a finite energy gap for the atoms, but no long range SF phase coherence exists at zero temperature. In this paper based on the Haldane model, we study the topological insulator with superlattice of pi-fluxes. We find that there exist the mid-gap states induced by the flux-superlattice. In particular, the mid-gap states have nontrivial topological properties, including the nonzero Chern number and the gapless edge states. We derive an effective tight-binding model to describe the topological midgap states and then study the mid-gap states by the effective tight-binding model. In this paper, we study the magnetic orders of two dimensional correlated topological insulators including the correlated Chern insulator and the correlated Z2 topological insulator at finite temperature. For the 2D correlated Chern insulator, we found that thermal-fluctuation-induced magnetic order appears in the intermediate interaction region of the correlated Chern insulator. On the contrary, for the correlated Z2 topological insulator there doesn't exist the thermal-fluctuation-induced magnetic order. In this paper, we realize a topological superconductor (TSC) in correlated topological insulator - the interacting spinful Haldane model. We consider the electrons on the Haldane model with on-site negative-U interaction and then study its properties by mean field theory and random-phase-approximation (RPA) approach. We found that in the intermediate interaction region, the ground state becomes a TSC with the Chern number 2. Majorana-fermionic quantum computation (MFQC) was proposed by Bravyi and Kitaev (See Ref.\cite{Kitaev}), in which a fault-torrent (non-topological) quantum computer built from Majorana fermions may be more efficient than that built from distinguishable two-state systems. However, till now people don't know how to realize a MFQC in a physical system. In this paper we proposed a possible realization of MFQC. We find that the end of a line-defect of p-wave superconductor or superfluid on a honeycomb lattice will trap a Majorana zero mode, which will become the starting point of MFQC. Then we show how to manipulate Majorana fermions to do universal MFQC, which possesses unique possibilities for high-level local controllability, individual addressing, and readout of the quantum states of individual constituent elements by using timely cold-atom technology., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

In this paper we study an s-wave topological SC with a square vortex-lattice. We proposed a topological Majorana lattice model to describe this topological state. We found that the Majorana lattice model is really a "topological SC" on the parent topological SC. Such correspondence between the Majorana lattice model and the topological SC with vortex-lattice is another holographic feature of the topological state. The spin 1 bilinear-biquadratic model on square lattice in the region $0<\phi<\pi/4$ is studied in a fermion representation with a p-wave pairing BCS type mean-field theory. Our results show there may exist a non-trivial gapped spin liquid with time-reversal symmetry spontaneously breaking. This exotic state manifests its topological nature by forming chiral states at the edges. To show it more clear, we set up and solved a ribbon system. We got a gapless dispersion representing the edge modes beneath the bulk modes. The edge modes with nonzero longitudinal momentum ($k_{x}\neq0$) convect in opposite directions at the two edges, which leads to a two-fold degeneracy. While the zero longitudinal momentum ($k_{x}=0$) modes turn out to be Majorana fermion states. The edge spin correlation functions are found to decay in a power law with the distance increasing. We also calculated the contribution of the edge modes to the specific heat and obtained a linear law at low temperatures., Comment: 16 pages

In this paper, we studied the doped Z2 topological spin liquid of the toric-code model. We found that the doped holes become supersymmetric particles. The ground state of the doped Z2 topological spin liquid becomes new matters of quantum states - supersymmetric Bose-Einstein condensation or supersymmetric superfluid. In this paper we study the quantum properties of the lattice vacancy in topological band insulators (TBIs) and topological superconductors (TSCs) on honeycomb lattice with particle-hole symmetry. Each vacancy has one zero mode for the Haldane model and two zero modes for the Kane-Mele model. In addition, in TSCs on honeycomb lattice with particle-hole symmetry, we found the existence of the Majorana zero modes around the vacancies. In this paper we study the symmetry protected Majorana edge states for the Z2 topological order of the Wen-plaquette model and the toric-code model and calculate the dispersion of the Majorana edge states. For the system with translational symmetry, the Majorana edge states are gapless and have the nodal points at k=0 and k=pi. In this paper, based on the mean field approach and random-phase-approximation, we study the magnetic properties of the spinful Haldane model on honeycomb lattice of topological flat band with on-site repulsive Coulomb interaction. We find that the antiferromagnetic (AF) order is more stable than ferromagnetic (FM) order at (or near) half-filling; while away from half-filling the phase diagram becomes complex: At large doping, FM order is more stable than AF order due to the flatness of band structure. In this paper, we found a new type of insulator - composite spin liquid which can be regarded as a short range B-type topological spin-density-wave. Composite spin liquid is topological ordered state beyond the classification of traditional spin liquid states. We propose a potentially practical scheme to simulate artificial Abelian gauge field for polaritons using a hybrid quantum system consisting of nitrogen-vacancy center ensembles (NVEs) and superconducting transmission line resonators (TLR). In our case, the collective excitations of NVEs play the role of bosonic particles, and our multiport device tends to circulate polaritons in a behavior like a charged particle in an external magnetic field. We discuss the possibility of identifying signatures of the Hofstadter "butterfly" in the optical spectra of the resonators, and analyze the ground state crossover for different gauge fields. Our work opens new perspectives in quantum simulation of condensed matter and many-body physics using hybrid spin-ensemble circuit quantum electrodynamics system. In this paper by studying p-band fermionic system with nearest neighbor attractive interaction we find translation symmetry protected Z2 topological superfluid (TSF) that is characterized by a special fermion parity pattern at high symmetry points in momentum space k=(0,0), (0,pi), (pi,0), (pi,pi). Such Z2 TSF supports the robust Majorana edge modes and a new type of low energy excitation - (supersymmetric) Z2 link-excitation. In this paper, we investigate the topological Hubbard model on honeycomb lattice. By considering the topological properties of the magnetic state, new types of quantum states - A-type and B-type topological spin-density-waves (A-TSDW and B-TSDW) are explored. The low energy physics is solely determined by its Chern-Simons-Hopf gauge field theories with different K-matrices. In the formulism of topological field theory, we found spin-charge separated charge-flux binding effect for A-TSDW and spin-charge synchronized charge-flux binding effect for B-TSDW. We propose a theoretical description of the phase diagram and physical properties in A2Fe4Se5-type (A=K, Tl) compounds based on a coexistent local moment and itinerant electron picture. Using neutron scattering and ARPES measurements to fix the general structure of the local moment and itinerant Fermi pockets, we find a superconducting (SC) regime with s-wave pairing at the M pockets and an incipient sign-change s-wave near the Gamma point, which is adjacent to an insulating state at low doping and a charge-density-wave (CDW) state at high doping. The uniform susceptibility and resistivity are found to be consistent with the experiment. The main distinction with iron pnictide superconductors is also discussed., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

In this paper, we investigate the topological Hubbard model - the spinful Haldane model with on-site interaction on honeycomb lattice with spin rotation symmetry by using slave-rotor approach and find that chiral spin liquid exists in such a correlated electron system of the intermediate coupling region. By considering the anyon nature of excitations, chiral spin liquid may be the ground state of the topological Hubbard model. The low energy physics is basically determined by its Chern-Simons gauge theory.

We study collective spin excitations of a magnetically ordered state in a multi-component system composed of both itinerant electrons and local moments. Here the induced spin-density-wave (SDW) ordering of itinerant electrons and the collinear antiferromangetic (AF) ordering of local moments are locked together via a Hund's rule coupling. We show that the Goldstone theorem still holds at the RPA level with the gapless spin wave protected inside the small SDW gap of itinerant electrons, which, however, is fragile in the presence of ion-anisotropy. A gapped out-of-phase spin mode extending over a much wider energy scale above the SDW gap is found to be more robust against the ion-anisotropy, which is mainly contributed by the local moment fluctuations. While the scattering between the Goldstone mode and itinerant electrons diminishes within the SDW gap, the out-of-phase mode will strongly interact with itinerant electrons and thus dominate the spin and charge dynamics in such an ordered phase. Possible relevance of such a model to the iron-pnictides will be also discussed.

In this paper, we analyze the quantum phases of multiple component Bose-Hubbard model in optical superlattices, using a mean-field method, the decoupling approximation. We find that the phase diagrams exhibit complected patterns and regions with various Charge Density Wave (CDW) for both one- and two- component cases. In this paper, we study the non-magnetic insulator state near Mott transition of 2D pi-flux Hubbard model on square lattice and find that such non-magnetic insulator state is quantum spin liquid state with nodal fermionic excitations - nodal spin liquid (NSL). When there exists small easy-plane anisotropic energy, the ground state becomes Z2 topological spin liquid (TSL) with full gapped excitations. The U(1)times U(1) mutual--Chern-Simons (MCS) theory is obtained to describe the low energy physics of NSL and TSL.

In this paper, starting from a lattice model of topological insulators, we study the quantum phase transitions among different quantum states, including quantum spin Hall state, quantum anomalous Hall state and normal band insulator state by calculating their topological properties (edge states, quantized spin Hall conductivities and the number of zero mode on a Pi-flux). We find that there exist universal features for the topological quantum phase transitions (TQPTs) in different cases : the emergence of nodal fermions at high symmetry points, the non-analytic third derivative of ground state energy and the jumps of the topological "order parameters". In this paper we systematically study a simple class of translation-symmetry protected topological orders in quantum spin systems using slave-particle approach. The spin systems on square lattice are translation invariant, but may break any other symmetries. We consider topologically ordered ground states that do not spontaneously break any symmetry. Those states can be described by Z2A or Z2B projective symmetry group. We find that the Z2A translation symmetric topological orders can still be divided into 16 sub-classes corresponding to 16 new translation-symmetry protected topological orders. We introduced four $Z_2$ topological indices $\zeta_{\v{k}}=0,1$ at $\v {k}=(0,0)$, $(0,\pi)$, $(\pi, 0)$, $(\pi ,\pi)$ to characterize those 16 new topological orders. We calculated the topological degeneracies and crystal momenta for those 16 topological phases on even-by-even, even-by-odd, odd-by-even, and odd-by-odd lattices, which allows us to physically measure such topological orders. We predict the appearance of gapless fermionic excitations at the quantum phase transitions between those symmetry protected topological orders. Our result can be generalized to any dimensions. We find 256 translation-symmetry protected Z2A topological orders for a system on 3D lattice.

In this paper we introduce four Z_2 topological indices zeta_k=0,1 at k=(0,0), (0,pi), (pi, 0), (pi, pi) characterizing 16 universal classes of 2D superconducting states that have translation symmetry but may break any other symmetries. The 16 classes of superconducting states are distinguished by their even/odd numbers of fermions on even-by-even, even-by-odd, odd-by-even, and odd-by-odd lattices. As a result, the 16 classes topological superconducting states exist even for interacting systems. For non-interacting systems, we find that zeta_k is the number of electrons on k=(0,0), (0,pi), (pi, 0), or (pi,pi) orbitals (mod 2) in the ground state. In this paper, macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) effect of Z2 topological order in the Wen-Plaquette model is studied. This kind of MQT is characterized by quantum tunneling processes of different virtual quasi-particles moving around a torus. By a high-order degenerate perturbation approach, the effective pseudo-spin models of the degenerate ground states are obtained. Recent experiments on quantum degenerate gases give an opportunity for simulating strongly-correlated electronic systems in optical lattices. It may shed light on some long-standing puzzles in condensed-matter physics, like the nature of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates that had baffled people over two decades. It is believed that the two-dimensional fermionic Hubbard model, or t-J model, contains the key to this problem; but the difficulty of unveiling the mystery of a strongly-interacting fermionic system is also generally acknowledged. Here, as a substitute, we systematically analyze the property of bosonic t-J model simulated in optical superlattices near unit-filling. In particular, we show the emergence of a strange topological Fermi liquid with Fermi surfaces from a purely bosonic system. We also discuss the possibility of observing these phenomena in ultracold atom experiments. In this paper, based on the formulation of an O(3) non-linear sigma model, we study the two-dimensional Pi-flux Hubbard model at half-filling. A quantum non-magnetic insulator is explored near the metal-insulator transition that may be a possible candidate of the spin liquid state. Such quantum non-magnetic insulator on square lattice is not induced by frustrations. Instead, it originates from quantum spin fluctuations with relatively small effective spin moments.
