We report magnetization, specific heat, and NMR measurements of 3-Br-4-F-V [=3-(3-bromo-4-fluorophenyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl], a strong-rung S=1/2 Heisenberg spin ladder with ferromagnetic leg interactions. We explain the magnetic and thermodynamic properties based on the strong-rung regime. Furthermore, we find a field-induced successive phase transition in the specific heat and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1. 19F-NMR spectra for higher- and lower-temperature phases indicate partial magnetic order and incommensurate long-range order, respectively, evidencing the presence of frustration due to weak interladder couplings., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

From neutron diffraction measurements on a quasi-1D Ising-like Co$^{\rm 2+}$ spin compound BaCo$_{\rm 2}$V$_{\rm 2}$O$_{\rm 8}$, we observed an appearance of a novel type of incommensurate ordering in magnetic fields. This ordering is essentially different from the N{\' e}el-type ordering, which is expected for the classical system, and is caused by quantum fluctuation inherent in the quantum spin chain. A Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) nature characteristic of the gapless quantum 1D system is responsible for the realization of the incommensurate ordering., Comment: 4pages, 4figure

High-field specific heat measurements on BaCo2V2O8, which is a good realization of an S = 1/2 quasi one-dimensional Ising-like antifferomagnet, have been performed in magnetic fields up to 12 T along the chain and at temperature down to 200 mK. We have found a new magnetic ordered state in the field-induced phase above Hc ~ 3.9 T. We suggest that a novel type of the incommensurate order, which has no correspondence to the classical spin system, is realized in the field-induced phase., Comment: 4pages, 4figures

We present a theoretical and experimental study of a quasi-one-dimensional zigzag antiferromagnet (N_2H_5)CuCl_3, which can be viewed as weakly coupled Heisenberg chains with a frustrated interaction. We first discuss generic features of the magnetic properties of the zigzag spin chain between the nearly single chain case and the nearly double chain case, on the basis of the finite temperature density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. We next show the experimental results for the magnetic susceptibility and the high-field magnetization of a single crystal of (N_2H_5)CuCl_3 above the Neel temperature T_N=1.55K. By comparing the experimental data with the DMRG results carefully, we finally obtain the ratio of the nearest and next-nearest exchange couplings as J_1/J_2=0.25 with J_2/k_B=16.3K. We also investigate the three-dimensional (3D) coupling J' effect by using the mean-field theory combined with the DMRG calculations. The estimated value J' \sim 0.04J_2 supports good one-dimensionality of (N_2H_5)CuCl_3 above T_N., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in J. Phys.: Condens. Matter

We discuss an universal relation $\epsilon(i\kappa)=0$ with ${\rm Re} \kappa=1/\xi$ in 1D quantum spin systems with an excitation gap, where $\epsilon(k)$ is the dispersion curve of the low-energy excitation and $\xi$ is the correlation length of the ground-state. We first discuss this relation for integrable models such as the Ising model in a transverse filed and the XYZ model. We secondly make a derivation of the relation for general cases, in connection with the equilibrium crystal shape in the corresponding 2D classical system. We finally verify the relation for the S=1 bilinear-biquadratic spin chain and $S=1/2$ zigzag spin ladder numerically., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, PRB accepted
