Search

The topological properties observed in iron-based superconductors extend our understanding of vortex Majorana quasiparticle excitations in unexpected ways. Vortex Majorana physics has been extensively studied within the context of the topologically protected surface Dirac state. By employing an in-situ strain device, we demonstrate that uniaxial strain can generate Majorana zero modes out of the topological Dirac semimetal bulk state in LiFeAs. Uniaxial strain along [100] direction is found to enhance the band renormalization of LiFeAs, effectively reducing the energy separation between the Fermi level and the topological Dirac semimetal state, and breaking C4 symmetry. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we observe the evolution of vortex bound states in the topological Dirac semimetal state region, accompanied by the emergence of Majorana zero modes and vortex bound states contributed by the bulk band. Magnetic field is expelled from a superconductor, unless it forms quantum vortices, consisting of a core singularity with current circulating around it. The London quantization condition implies that there is one core singularity per quantum of magnetic flux in single-component superconductors, while in multiband materials fractional vortices are possible. Here, we report the first observation of quantum vortex core fractionalization on the potassium terminated surface of multiband superconductor KFe2As2 by scanning tunneling microscopy. We observe splitting of an integer-flux vortex into several fractional vortices, leading to disparity between numbers of flux quanta and vortex cores. Our findings demonstrate that fractionalized core singularities are possible in a multiband superconductor, opening avenue for new experimental platforms with quasiparticles with fractional statistics., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5, which exhibits intertwined unconventional charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity, has garnered significant attention recently. Despite extensive static studies, the nature of these exotic electronic orders remains elusive. In this study, we investigate the non-equilibrium electronic structure of CsV3Sb5 via time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results reveal that upon laser excitation, the van Hove singularities immediately shift towards the Fermi level and subsequently oscillate in sync with a 1.3 THz coherent phonon mode. By analyzing the coherent intensity oscillations in the energy-momentum (E-k) map, we find that this coherent phonon is strongly coupled with electronic bands from both Sb and V orbitals. While typically observable only in the CDW state, remarkably, we find that the 1.3-THz coherent phonon mode can be persistently excited at temperatures above T_CDW, suggesting the potential existence of fluctuated CDW in CsV3Sb5. We report the observation for the p$_{z}$ electron band and the band inversion in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{x}$Se$_{1-x}$ with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Furthermore, we found that excess Fe (y>0) inhibits the topological band inversion in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{x}$Se$_{1-x}$, which explains the absence of Majorana zero modes in previous reports for Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{x}$Se$_{1-x}$ with excess Fe. Based on our analysis of different amounts of Te doping and excess Fe, we propose a delicate topological phase in this material. Thanks to this delicate phase, one may be able to tune the topological transition via applying lattice strain or carrier doping.

The omnipresence of charge density waves (CDWs) across almost all cuprate families underpins a common organizing principle. However, a longstanding debate of whether its spatial symmetry is stripe or checkerboard remains unresolved. While CDWs in lanthanum- and yttrium-based cuprates possess a stripe symmetry, distinguishing these two scenarios has been challenging for the short-range CDW in bismuth-based cuprates. Here, we employed high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to uncover the spatial symmetry of the CDW in Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$. Across a wide range of doping and temperature, anisotropic CDW peaks with elliptical shapes were found in reciprocal space. Based on Fourier transform analysis of real-space models, we interpret the results as evidence of unidirectional charge stripes, hosted by mutually 90$^\circ$-rotated anisotropic domains. The linear-in-temperature resistivity is one of the important mysteries in the strange metal state of high-temperature cuprate superconductors. To uncover this anomalous property, the energy-momentum-dependent imaginary part of the self-energy Im ${\rm \Sigma}(k, \omega)$ holds the key information. Here we perform systematic doping, momentum, and temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of electron-doped cuprate ${\rm La}_{2-x}{\rm Ce}_x{\rm CuO}_4$ and extract the evolution of the strange metal scattering in momentum space. At low doping levels and low temperatures, Im ${\rm\Sigma} \propto \omega$ dependence dominates the whole momentum space. For high doping levels and high temperatures, Im ${\rm\Sigma} \propto \omega^2$ shows up, starting from the antinodal region. By comparing with the hole-doped cuprates ${\rm La}_{2-x}{\rm Sr}_x{\rm CuO}_4$ and ${\rm Bi}_2{\rm Sr}_2{\rm CaCu}_2{\rm O}_8$, we find a dichotomy of the scattering rate exists along the nodal and antinodal direction, which is ubiquitous in the cuprate family. Our work provides new insight into the strange metal state in cuprates.

As a typical hole-doped cuprate superconductor, Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+{\delta} (Bi2212) carrier doping is mostly determined by its oxygen content. Traditional doping methods can regulate its doping level within the range of hole doping. Here we report the first application of CaH 2 annealing method in regulating the doping level of Bi2212. By continuously controlling the anneal time, a series of differently doped samples can be obtained. The combined experimental results of x-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, resistance and Hall measurements demonstrate that the CaH 2 induced topochemical reaction can effectively change the oxygen content of Bi2212 within a very wide range, even switching from hole doping to electron doping. The Mott insulator provides an excellent foundation for exploring a wide range of strongly correlated physical phenomena, such as high-temperature superconductivity, quantum spin liquid, and colossal magnetoresistance. A Mott insulator with the simplest degree of freedom is an ideal and highly desirable system for studying the fundamental physics of Mottness. In this study, we have unambiguously identified such an anticipated Mott insulator in a van der Waals layered compound Nb3Cl8. In the high-temperature phase, where interlayer coupling is negligible, density functional theory calculations for the monolayer of Nb3Cl8 suggest a half-filled flat band at the Fermi level, whereas angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments observe a large gap. This observation is perfectly reproduced by dynamical mean-field theory calculations considering strong electron correlations, indicating a correlation-driven Mott insulator state. Since this half-filled band derived from a single 2a1 orbital is isolated from all other bands, the monolayer of Nb3Cl8 is an ideal realization of the celebrated single-band Hubbard model. Upon decreasing the temperature, the bulk system undergoes a phase transition, where structural changes significantly enhance the interlayer coupling. This results in a bonding-antibonding splitting in the Hubbard bands, while the Mott gap remains dominant. Superconductivity is a remarkably widespread phenomenon observed in most metals cooled down to very low temperatures. The ubiquity of such conventional superconductors, and the wide range of associated critical temperatures, is readily understood in terms of the celebrated Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. Occasionally, however, unconventional superconductors are found, such as the iron-based materials, which extend and defy this understanding in new and unexpected ways. In the case of the iron-based superconductors, this includes a new appreciation of the ways in which the presence of multiple atomic orbitals can manifest in unconventional superconductivity, giving rise to a rich landscape of gap structures that share the same dominant pairing mechanism. Besides superconductivity, these materials have also led to new insights into the unusual metallic state governed by the Hund's interaction, the control and mechanisms of electronic nematicity, the impact of magnetic fluctuations and quantum criticality, and the significance of topology in correlated states. Over the thirteen years since their discovery, they have proven to be an incredibly fruitful testing ground for the development of new experimental tools and theoretical approaches, both of which have extensively influenced the wider field of quantum materials., Comment: Review paper. The iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) have recently emerged as a promising single-material Majorana platform by hosting isolated Majorana zero modes (MZMs) at relatively high temperatures. To further verify its Majorana nature and move forward to build topological quantum qubit, it is highly desirable to achieve tunability for MZMs on homogeneous FeSCs. Here, with an in-situ strain device, we can controllably create MZMs on the homogeneous surface of stoichiometric superconductor LiFeAs by inducing a topological phase transition. The evolution of discrete energy modes inside a strained vortex is found to mimics exactly as the predicted topological vortex case, proving the Majorana nature of emerging zero modes of vortex. Such tunability of MZMs in a homogeneous superconductor is an important step toward their application in topological quantum computation.

The vortex of iron-based superconductors is emerging as a promising platform for Majorana zero mode, owing to a magic integration among intrinsic vortex winding, non-trivial band topology, strong electron-electron correlations, high-Tc superconductivity and the simplification of single material. It overcomes many difficulties suffered in heterostructure-based Majorana platforms, including small topological gap, interfacial contamination, lattice imperfections, and etc. Isolated zero-bias peaks have been found in vortex of several iron-based superconductors. So far, studies from both experimental and theoretical aspects strongly indicate the realization of vortex Majorana zero mode, with a potential to be applied to topological quantum computation. By taking Fe(Te,Se) superconductor as an example, here we review original idea and research progress of Majorana zero modes in this new platform. After introducing the identifications of topological band structure and real zero modes in vortex, we summarize the physics behaviors of vortex Majorana zero modes systematically. Firstly, relying on the behavior of the zero mode wave function and evidence of quasiparticle poisoning, we analyze the mechanism of emergence of vortex Majorana zero modes. Secondly, assisted with some well-established theories, we elaborate the measurements on Majorana symmetry and topological nature of vortex Majorana zero modes. After that, we switch from quantum physics to quantum engineering, and analyze the performance of vortex Majorana zero mode under real circumstances, which may potentially benefit the exploration of practical applications in the future. This review follows the physics properties of vortex Majorana zero modes, especially emphasizes the link between phenomena and mechanisms. We observe two types of superconducting states controlled by orientations of local wrinkles on the surface of LiFeAs. Using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we find type-I wrinkles enlarge the superconducting gaps and enhance the transition temperature, whereas type-II wrinkles significantly suppress the superconducting gaps. The vortices on wrinkles show a C2 symmetry, indicating the strain effects on the wrinkles. A discontinuous switch of superconductivity occurs at the border between two different wrinkles. Our results demonstrate that the local strain effect could affect superconducting order parameter of LiFeAs with a possible Lifshitz transition, by alternating crystal structure in different directions., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures

The recent realization of pristine Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in vortices of iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) provides a promising platform for long-sought-after fault-tolerant quantum computation. A large topological gap between the MZMs and the lowest excitations enabled detailed characterization of vortex MZMs in those materials. Despite those achievements, a practical implementation of topological quantum computation based on MZM braiding remains elusive in this new Majorana platform. Among the most pressing issues are the lack of controllable tuning methods for vortex MZMs and inhomogeneity of the FeSC Majorana compounds that destroys MZMs during the braiding process. Thus, the realization of tunable vortex MZMs in a truly homogeneous compound of stoichiometric composition and with a charge neutral cleavage surface is highly desirable. Here we demonstrate experimentally that the stoichiometric superconductor LiFeAs is a good candidate to overcome these two obstacles. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we discover that the MZMs, which are absent on the natural surface, can appear in vortices influenced by native impurities. Our detailed analysis and model calculations clarify the mechanism of emergence of MZMs in this material, paving a way towards MZMs tunable by controllable methods such as electrostatic gating. Braiding Majorana zero modes is essential for fault-tolerant topological quantum computing. Iron-based superconductors with nontrivial band topology have recently emerged as a surprisingly promising platform for creating distinct Majorana zero modes in magnetic vortices in a single material and at relatively high temperatures. The magnetic field-induced Abrikosov vortex lattice makes it difficult to braid a set of Majorana zero modes or to study the coupling of a Majorana doublet due to overlapping wave functions. Here we report the observation of the proposed quantum anomalous vortex with integer quantized vortex core states and the Majorana zero mode induced by magnetic Fe adatoms deposited on the surface. We observe its hybridization with a nearby field-induced Majorana vortex in iron-based superconductor FeTe0.55Se0.45. We also observe vortex-free Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound states at the Fe adatoms with a weaker coupling to the substrate, and discover a reversible transition between Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states and Majorana zero mode by manipulating the exchange coupling strength. Recently, iron-chalcogenide superconductors have emerged as a new and promising platform for studying and manipulating Majorana zero mode (MZM). By combining topological band structure and superconductivity in a multiband material, they provide significant advantages such as higher superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and isolated Majorana mode. However, iron-chalcogenide superconductors, especially Fe(Te,Se), suffer from strong inhomogeneity which may hamper their practical application. On the other hand, some iron-pnictide (Fe-As) superconductors, such as LiFeAs, have been demonstrated to have a similar topological band structure, yet no MZM has been observed in its vortex cores, raising a question of universality of MZM presence in iron-based superconductors. In this work, by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we identify the first Fe-As superconductor CaKFe4As4 (Tc = 35 K) which has both the superconducting Dirac surface states and the MZMs inside its vortex cores. The topological band inversion is largely due to the down-shift of the pz band caused by the bilayer band folding in this material. More strikingly, the energies and spatial line profiles of MZM and multiple quantized Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon bound states observed inside the topological vortex can be accurately reproduced by a simple theoretical model derived from a surface Dirac cone, firmly establishing Majorana nature of the zero mode.

Based on the first-principles calculations and experimental measurements, we report that the hexagonal phase of ternary transition metal pnictides TT'X (T=Zr, Hf; T'=Ru; X=P, As), which are well-known noncentrosymmetric superconductors with relatively high transition temperatures, host nontrivial bulk topology. Before the superconducting phase transition, we find that HfRuP belongs to a Weyl semimetal phase with 12 pairs of type-II Weyl points, while ZrRuAs, ZrRuP and HfRuAs belong to a topological crystalline insulating phase with trivial Fu-Kane $\mathbb Z_2$ indices but $nontrivial$ mirror Chern numbers. High-quality single crystal samples of the noncentrosymmetric superconductors with these two different topological states have been obtained and the superconductivity is verified experimentally. The wide-range band structures of ZrRuAs have been identified by ARPES and reproduced by theoretical calculations. Combined with intrinsic superconductivity, the nontrivial topology of the normal state may generate unconventional superconductivity in both bulk and surfaces. We present a phenomenological Green's function to characterize the superconducting and pseudogap phases of the cuprates based on a microscopic theory of doped Mott insulators. In this framework, the "Fermi arc" and "kink" phenomena observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments in the pseudogap phase can be systematically explained as a function of doping, which is further connected to the two-gap feature in the superconducting phase with dichotomy between the nodal and antinodal physics. We study the systematic doping evolution of nodal dispersions by in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the continuously doped surface of a high-temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$. We reveal that the nodal dispersion has three segments separated by two kinks, located at ~10 meV and roughly 70 meV, respectively. The three segments have different band velocities and different doping dependence. In particular, the velocity of the high-energy segment increases monotonically as the doping level decreases and can even surpass the bare band velocity. We propose that electron fractionalization is a possible cause for this anomalous nodal dispersion and may even play a key role in the understanding of exotic properties of cuprates.

Majorana zero-modes (MZMs) are spatially-localized zero-energy fractional quasiparticles with non-Abelian braiding statistics that hold a great promise for topological quantum computing. Due to its particle-antiparticle equivalence, an MZM exhibits robust resonant Andreev reflection and 2e2/h quantized conductance at low temperature. By utilizing variable-tunnel-coupled scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we study tunneling conductance of vortex bound states on FeTe0.55Se0.45 superconductors. We report observations of conductance plateaus as a function of tunnel coupling for zero-energy vortex bound states with values close to or even reaching the 2e2/h quantum conductance. In contrast, no such plateau behaviors were observed on either finite energy Caroli-de Genne-Matricon bound states or in the continuum of electronic states outside the superconducting gap. This unique behavior of the zero-mode conductance reaching a plateau strongly supports the existence of MZMs in this iron-based superconductor, which serves as a promising single-material platform for Majorana braiding at a relatively high temperature.

Vortices in topological superconductors host Majorana zero modes (MZMs), which are proposed to be building blocks of fault-tolerant topological quantum computers. Recently, a new single-material platform for realizing MZM has been discovered in iron-based superconductors, without involving hybrid semiconductor-superconductor structures. Here we report on a detailed scanning tunneling spectroscopy study of a FeTe0.55Se0.45 single crystal, revealing two distinct classes of vortices present in this system which differ by a half-integer level shift in the energy spectra of the vortex bound states. This level shift is directly tied with the presence or absence of zero-bias peak and also alters the ratios of higher energy levels from integer to half-odd-integer. Our model calculations fully reproduce the spectra of these two types of vortex bound states, suggesting the presence of topological and conventional superconducting regions that coexist within the same crystal. Our findings provide strong evidence for the topological nature of superconductivity in FeTe0.55Se0.45 and establish it as an excellent platform for further studies on MZMs., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures

Topological insulators and semimetals as well as unconventional iron-based superconductors have attracted major recent attention in condensed matter physics. Previously, however, little overlap has been identified between these two vibrant fields, even though the principal combination of topological bands and superconductivity promises exotic unprecedented avenues of superconducting states and Majorana bound states (MBSs), the central building block for topological quantum computation. Along with progressing laser-based spin-resolved and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) towards high energy and momentum resolution, we have resolved topological insulator (TI) and topological Dirac semimetal (TDS) bands near the Fermi level ($E_{\text{F}}$) in the iron-based superconductors Li(Fe,Co)As and Fe(Te,Se), respectively. The TI and TDS bands can be individually tuned to locate close to $E_{\text{F}}$ by carrier doping, allowing to potentially access a plethora of different superconducting topological states in the same material. Topological Dirac semimetals (TDSs) exhibit bulk Dirac cones protected by time reversal and crystal symmetry, as well as surface states originating from non-trivial topology. While there is a manifold possible onset of superconducting order in such systems, few observations of intrinsic superconductivity have so far been reported for TDSs. We observe evidence for a TDS phase in FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ ($x$ = 0.45), one of the high transition temperature ($T_c$) iron-based superconductors. In angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and transport experiments, we find spin-polarized states overlapping with the bulk states on the (001) surface, and linear magnetoresistance (MR) starting from 6 T. Combined, this strongly suggests the existence of a TDS phase, which is confirmed by theoretical calculations. In total, the topological electronic states in Fe(Te,Se) provide a promising high $T_c$ platform to realize multiple topological superconducting phases., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The search for Majorana bound state (MBS) has recently emerged as one of the most active research areas in condensed matter physics, fueled by the prospect of using its non-Abelian statistics for robust quantum computation. A highly sought-after platform for MBS is two-dimensional topological superconductors, where MBS is predicted to exist as a zero-energy mode in the core of a vortex. A clear observation of MBS, however, is often hindered by the presence of additional low-lying bound states inside the vortex core. By using scanning tunneling microscope on the newly discovered superconducting Dirac surface state of iron-based superconductor FeTe1-xSex (x = 0.45, superconducting transition temperature Tc = 14.5 K), we clearly observe a sharp and non-split zero-bias peak inside a vortex core. Systematic studies of its evolution under different magnetic fields, temperatures, and tunneling barriers strongly suggest that this is the case of tunneling to a nearly pure MBS, separated from non-topological bound states which is moved away from the zero energy due to the high ratio between the superconducting gap and the Fermi energy in this material. Topological superconductors, whose edge hosts Majorana bound states or Majorana fermions that obey non-Abelian statistics, can be used for low-decoherence quantum computations. Most of the proposed topological superconductors are realized with spin-helical states through proximity effect to BCS superconductors. However, such approaches are difficult for further studies and applications because of the low transition temperatures and complicated hetero-structures. Here by using high-resolution spin-resolved and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we discover that the iron-based superconductor FeTe1-xSex (x = 0.45, Tc = 14.5 K) hosts Dirac-cone type spin-helical surface states at Fermi level, which open an s-wave SC gap below Tc. We performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies on a series of FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ monolayer films grown on SrTiO$_{3}$. The superconductivity of the films is robust and rather insensitive to the variations of the band position and effective mass caused by the substitution of Se by Te. However, the band gap between the electron- and hole-like bands at the Brillouin zone center decreases towards band inversion and parity exchange, which drive the system to a nontrivial topological state predicted by theoretical calculations. Our results provide a clear experimental indication that the FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ monolayer materials are high-temperature connate topological superconductors in which band topology and superconductivity are integrated intrinsically., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Fe-K$_{\beta}$ X-ray emission spectroscopy measurements reveal an asymmetric doping dependence of the magnetic moments $\mu_\text{bare}$ in electron- and hole-doped BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. At low temperature, $\mu_\text{bare}$ is nearly constant in hole-doped samples, whereas it decreases upon electron doping. Increasing temperature substantially enhances $\mu_\text{bare}$ in the hole-doped region, which is naturally explained by the theoretically predicted crossover into a spin-frozen state. Our measurements demonstrate the importance of Hund's coupling and electronic correlations, especially for hole-doped BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, and the inadequacy of a fully localized or fully itinerant description of the 122 family of Fe pnictides.

The angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the superconductor (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ have been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Our results explain the previously obscured origins of all salient features of the ARPES response of this paradigm pnictide compound and reveal the origin of the Lifshitz transition. Comparison of calculated ARPES spectra with the underlying DMFT band structure shows an important impact of final state effects, which results for three-dimensional states in a deviation of the ARPES spectra from the true spectral function. In particular, the apparent effective mass enhancement seen in the ARPES response is not an entirely intrinsic property of the quasiparticle valence bands but may have a significant extrinsic contribution from the photoemission process and thus differ from its true value. Because this effect is more pronounced for low photoexcitation energies, soft-X-ray ARPES delivers more accurate values of the mass enhancement due to a sharp definition of the 3D electron momentum., Comment: including Supplemental Material

HoTe$_{3}$, a member of the rare-earth tritelluride ($R$Te$_{3}$) family, and its Pd-intercalated compounds, Pd$_x$HoTe$_{3}$, where superconductivity (SC) sets in as the charge-density wave (CDW) transition is suppressed by the intercalation of a small amount of Pd, are investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and electrical resistivity. Two incommensurate CDWs with perpendicular nesting vectors are observed in HoTe$_{3}$ at low temperatures. With a slight Pd intercalation ($x$ = 0.01), the large CDW gap decreases and the small one increases. The momentum dependence of the gaps along the inner Fermi surface (FS) evolves from orthorhombicity to near tetragonality, manifesting the competition between two CDW orders. At $x$ = 0.02, both CDW gaps decreases with the emergence of SC. Further increasing the content of Pd for $x$ = 0.04 will completely suppress the CDW instabilities and give rise to the maximal SC order. The evolution of the electronic structures and electron-phonon couplings (EPCs) of the multiple CDWs upon Pd intercalation are carefully scrutinized. Despite having the simplest atomic structure, bulk FeSe has an observed electronic structure with the largest deviation from the band theory predictions among all Fe-based superconductors and exhibits a low temperature nematic electronic state without intervening magnetic order. We show that the Fe-Fe interatomic Coulomb repulsion $V$ offers a natural explanation for the puzzling electron correlation effects in FeSe superconductors. It produces a strongly renormalized low-energy band structure where the van Hove singularity sits remarkably close to Fermi level in the high-temperature electron liquid phase as observed experimentally. This proximity enables the quantum fluctuations in $V$ to induce a rotational symmetry breaking electronic bond order in the $d$-wave channel. We argue that this emergent low-temperature $d$-wave bond nematic state, different from the commonly discussed ferro-orbital order and spin-nematicity, has been observed recently by several angle resolved photoemission experiments detecting the lifting of the band degeneracies at high symmetry points in the Brillouin zone. We present a symmetry analysis of the space group and identify the hidden antiunitary $T$-symmetry that protects the band degeneracy and the electronic order/interaction that can break the symmetry and lift the degeneracy. We show that the $d$-wave nematic bond order, together with the spin-orbit coupling, provide a unique explanation of the temperature dependence, momentum space anisotropy, and domain effects observed experimentally. We present a study of the tetragonal to collapsed-tetragonal transition of CaFe2As2 using angle-resolved photoemission experiments and dynamical mean field theory-based electronic structure calculations. We observe that the collapsed-tetragonal phase exhibits reduced correlations and a higher coherence temperature due to the stronger Fe-As hybridization. Furthermore, a comparison of measured photoemission spectra and theoretical spectral functions shows that momentum-dependent corrections to the density functional band structure are essential for the description of low-energy quasiparticle dispersions. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) have been investigated on single crystal samples of KFe2As2. A van Hove singularity (vHs) has been directly observed just a few meV below the Fermi level E_F of superconducting KFe2As2, which locates in the middle of the principle axes of the first Brillouin zone. The majority of the density-of-states at E_F, mainly contributed by the proximity effect of the saddle point to E_F, is non-gapped in the superconducting state. Our observation of nodal behavior of the momentum area close to the vHs points, while providing consistent explanations to many exotic behaviours previously observed in this material, suggests Cooper pairing induced by a strong coupling mechanism., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The electronic structure of the intercalated iron-based superconductor Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O (Tc - 21.5 K) has been investigated by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and combined local density approximation and dynamical mean field theory calculations. The electronic states near the Fermi level are dominated by both the Fe 3d and Ti 3d orbitals, indicating that the spacing layers separating different FeAs layers are also metallic. By counting the enclosed volumes of the Fermi surface sheets, we observe a large self-doping effect, i.e. 0.25 electrons per unit cell are transferred from the FeAs layer to the Ti2As2O layer, leaving the FeAs layer in a hole-doped state. This exotic behavior is successfully reproduced by our dynamical mean field calculations, in which the self-doping effect is attributed to the electronic correlations in the Fe 3d shell. (NaxKy)FezSe2 crystals are prepared by Na, Fe, and Se as starting materials in NaCl/KCl flux at low temperatures~720 {\deg}C. It is found that K is more preferred than Na to enter in between FeSe layers and forms the phase. Thus-obtained crystals contain more superconducting phase in volume fraction and exhibit new features in transport property. We use transport, inelastic neutron scattering, and angle resolved photoemission experiments to demonstrate that the stoichiometric LiFeAs is an intrinsically electron-overdoped superconductor similar to those of the electron-overdoped NaFe1-xTxAs and BaFe2-xTxAs2 (T = Co,Ni). Furthermore, we show that although transport properties of the stoichiometric superconducting LiFeAs and Li-deficient nonsuperconducting Li1-xFeAs are different, their electronic and magnetic properties are rather similar. Therefore, the nonsuperconducting Li1-xFeAs is also in the electron overdoped regime, where small Li deficiencies near the FeAs octahedra can dramatically suppress superconductivity through the impurity scattering effect., Comment: 5 figures,5 pages

Cuprates, ferropnictides and ferrochalcogenides are three classes of unconventional high-temperature superconductors, who share similar phase diagrams in which superconductivity develops after a magnetic order is suppressed, suggesting a strong interplay between superconductivity and magnetism, although the exact picture of this interplay remains elusive. Here we show that there is a direct bridge connecting antiferromagnetic exchange interactions determined in the parent compounds of these materials to the superconducting gap functions observed in the corresponding superconducting materials. High superconducting transition temperature is achieved when the Fermi surface topology matches the form factor of the pairing symmetry favored by local magnetic exchange interactions. We discover a pressure induced quantum phase transition from the superconducting state to the non-superconducting Kondo screened phase associated with a 2% volume collapse in CeFeAsO0.7F0.3 through measurements of high-pressure resistance, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in a diamond anvil cell. Our XAS data of Ce-L3 in CeFeAsO0.7F0.3 clearly show a spectral weight transfer from the main line to the satellite line after the transition, demonstrating the formation of the Kondo singlets under pressure in CeFeAsO1-xFx. Recent scanning tunneling microscope (STM) measurements discovered remarkable electronic inhomogeneity, i.e. nano-scale spatial variations of the local density of states (LDOS) and the superconducting energy gap, in the high-Tc superconductor BSCCO. Based on the experimental findings we conjectured that the inhomogeneity arises from variations in local oxygen doping level and may be generic of doped Mott insulators which behave rather unconventionally in screening the dopant ionic potentials at atomic scales comparable to the short coherence length. Here, we provide theoretical support for this picture. We study a doped Mott insulator within a generalized t-J model, where doping is accompanied by ionic Coulomb potentials centered in the BiO plane. We calculate the LDOS spectrum, the integrated LDOS, and the local superconducting gap, make detailed comparisons to experiments, and find remarkable agreement with the experimental data. We emphasize the unconventional screening in a doped Mott insulator and show that nonlinear screening dominates at nano-meter scales which is the origin of the electronic inhomogeneity. It leads to strong inhomogeneous redistribution of the local hole density and promotes the notion of a local doping concentration. We find that the inhomogeneity structure manifests itself at all energy scales in the STM tunneling differential conductance, and elucidate the similarity and the differences between the data obtained in the constant tunneling current mode and the same data normalized to reflect constant tip-to-sample distance. We also discuss the underdoped case where nonlinear screening of the ionic potential turns the spatial electronic structure into a percolative mixture of patches with smaller pairing gaps embedded in a background with larger gaps to single particle excitations., Comment: 19 pages, final version
