An analytic formula describing the suppression of the equilibrium melting line by quenched point pinning disorder is compared to data from ac susceptibility and magnetization measurements in the mixed phase of the layered dichalcogenide low T_c superconductor 2H-NbSe_2. This material exhibits a sharp peak effect in the critical current close to the upper critical field H_c2(T). Arguing that the disorder-suppressed melting line in this system is to be identified with the locus of peak positions of the critical current as magnetic field and temperature are varied, we demonstrate that this formula provides a remarkably accurate fit to the experimental data over three orders of magnitude in magnetic field., Comment: 14 pages, single column, 4 figures

We have performed small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) of the flux line lattice (FLL) in a Fe doped NbSe_2 sample which presents a large peak effect in the critical current. The scattered intensity and the width of the Bragg peaks of the equilibrium FLL indicate an ordered structure in the peak effect zone. The history dependence in the FLL structure has been studied using field cooled and zero field cooled procedures, and each state shows the same intensity of Bragg scattering and good orientational order. These results strongly suggest that the peak effect is unrelated to a bulk disordering transition, and confirm the role of a heterogeneous distribution of screening current., Comment: accepted in Phys. We have investigated the healing of transient disordered vortex states injected into a superconducting sample during the field ramping process in isothermal M-H measurements as a prescription to comprehend the modulation in the state of order of the underlying equilibrium vortex state in weakly pinned single crystals of $2H$-NbSe$_2$ (zero field transition temperature, $T_c(0) \sim 6 K$) and Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ ($T_c(0) \sim 8.2 K$), which display order-disorder transition(s). Our results reaffirm the notion that spatial order in the flux line lattice proceeds to the amorphous state in two distinct steps as evidenced by the presence of second magnetization peak (SMP) anomaly and the peak effect (PE) phenomenon. Disordering commencing at the onset field of SMP has a window to heal between its peak field ($H_{smp}^p$) and the onset field ($H_p^{on}$) of the PE. A comparison of the scan rate dependence of magnetization hysteresis widths in two different crystals of $2H$-NbSe$_2$, one of which displays only the PE phenomenon and the other one that displays both SMP and PE anomalies, show that while enhancment in quenched random pinning invokes the occurence of SMP anomaly, it slows down the temporal decay of currents across the PE region., Comment: 9 figures

The existence of a peak effect in transport properties (a maximum of the critical current as function of magnetic field) is a well-known but still intriguing feature of type II superconductors such as NbSe2 and Bi-2212. Using a model of pinning by surface irregularities in anisotropic superconductors, we have developed a calculation of the critical current which allows estimating quantitatively the critical current in both the high critical current phase and in the low critical current phase. The only adjustable parameter of this model is the angle of the vortices at the surface. The agreement between the measurements and the model is really very impressive. In this framework, the anomalous dynamical properties close to the peak effect is due to co-existence of two different vortex states with different critical currents. Recent neutron diffraction data in NbSe2 crystals in presence of transport current support this point of view.

We have explored the presence of a two-peak feature spanning the peak effect (PE) region in the ac susceptibility data and the magnetization hysteresis measurements over a wide field-temperature regime in few weakly pinned single crystals of $2H$-NbSe$_2$, which display reentrant characteristic in the PE curve near $T_c$(0). We believe that the two-peak feature evolves into distinct second magnetization peak anomaly well separated from the PE with gradual enhancement in the quenched random pinning., Comment: 9 figures

We explore the effect of varying drive on metastability features exhibited by the vortex matter in single crystals of 2H-NbSe$_2$ and CeRu$_2$ with varying degree of random pinning. An optimal balance between the pinning and driving force is needed to view the metastability effects in typically weakly pinned specimen of low temperature superconductors. As one uses samples with larger pinning in order to differentiate the response of different metastable vortex states, one encounters a new phenomena, viz., the second magnetization peak (SMP) anomaly prior to the PE. Interplay between the path dependence in the critical current density and the non-linearity in the electromagnetic response determine the metastability effects seen in first and the third harmonic response of the ac susceptibility across the temperature regions of the SMP and the PE. The limiting temperature above which metastability effects cease can be conveniently located in the third harmonic data, and the observed behavior can be rationalized within the Beans Critical State model. A vortex phase diagram showing the different vortex phases for a typically weakly pinned specimen has been constructed via the ac susceptibility data in a crystal of 2H-NbSe$_2$ which shows the SMP and the PE anomalies. The phase space of coexisting weaker and stronger pinned regions has been identified. It can be bifurcated into two parts, where the order and disorder dominate, respectively. The former part continuously connects to the reentrant disordered vortex phase pertaining to the small bundle pinning regime, where the vortices are far apart, interaction effects are weak and the polycrystalline form of flux line lattice prevails., Comment: Submitted to the Special Volume on Vortex State Studies, Pramana J. We explore the metastability effects across the order-disorder transition pertaining to the peak effect phenomenonon in critical current density ($J_c$) via the first and the third harmonic ac susceptibility measurements in the weakly pinned single crystals of $2H$-$NbSe_2$. An analysis of our data suggests that an imprint of the limiting (spinodal) temperature above which $J_c$ is path independent can be conveniently located in the third harmonic data ($\chi_{3\omega}^{\prime}$)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. A percolation transition in the vortex state of a superconducting 2H-NbSe2 crystal is observed in the regime where vortices form a heterogeneous phase consisting of ordered and disordered domains. The transition is signaled by a sharp increase in critical current that occurs when the volume fraction of disordered domains, obtained from pulsed measurements of the current-voltage characteristics, reaches the value Pc= 0.26. Measurements on different vortex states show that while the temperature of the transition depends on history and measurement speed, the value of Pc and the critical exponent characterizing the approach to it, r =1.97 $\pm$ 0.66, are universal.

Flux Lines Lattice (FLL) states have been studied using transport measurements and Small Angle Neutron Scattering in low T$_c$ materials. In Pb-In, the bulk dislocations in the FLL do not influence the transport properties. In Fe doped NbSe$_{2}$, transport properties can differ after a Field Cooling (FC) or a Zero Field Cooling (ZFC) procedure, as previously reported. The ZFC FLL is found ordered with narrow Bragg Peaks and is linked to a linear V(I) curve and to a superficial critical current. The FC FLL pattern exhibits two Bragg peaks and the corresponding V(I) curve shows a S-shape. This can be explained by the coexistence of two ordered FLL slightly tilted from the applied field direction by different superficial currents. The shape of the V-I characteristics leading to a peak in the differential resistance r_d=dV/dI in the vicinity of the order-disorder transition in NbSe2 is investigated. r_d is large when measured by dc current. However, for a small Iac on a dc bias r_d decreases rapidly with frequency, even at a few Hz, and displays a large out-of-phase signal. In contrast, the ac response increases with frequency in the absence of dc bias. These surprisingly opposite phenomena and the peak in r_d are shown to result from a dynamic coexistence of two vortex matter phases rather than from the commonly assumed plastic depinning., Comment: 12 pages 4 figures. The large increase in voltage noise, commonly observed in the vicinity of the peak-effect in superconductors, is ascribed to a novel noise mechanism. A strongly pinned metastable disordered vortex phase, which is randomly generated at the edges and annealed into ordered phase in the bulk, causes large fluctuations in the integrated critical current of the sample. The excess noise due to this dynamic admixture of two distinct phases is found to display pronounced reentrant behavior. Transport studies in a Corbino disk geometry suggest that the Bragg glass phase undergoes a first-order transition into a disordered solid. This transition shows a sharp reentrant behavior at low fields. In contrast, in the conventional strip configuration, the phase transition is obscured by the injection of the disordered vortices through the sample edges, which results in the commonly observed vortex instabilities and smearing of the peak effect in NbSe2 crystals. These features are found to be absent in the Corbino geometry, in which the circulating vortices do not cross the sample edges., Comment: 12 pages 3 figures. The peak effect in weakly pinned superconductors is accompanied by metastable vortex states. Each metastable vortex configuration is characterized by a different critical current density J_c, which mainly depends on the past thermomagnetic history of the superconductor. A recent model [G. Ravikumar, et al, Phys. Rev. B 61, R6479 (2000)] proposed to explain the history dependent J_c postulates a stable state of vortex lattice with a critical current density J_c^{st}, determined uniquely by the field and temperature. In this paper, we present evidence for the existence of the stable state of the vortex lattice in the peak effect region of 2H-NbSe_2. It is shown that this stable state can be reached from any metastable vortex state by cycling the applied field by a small amplitude. The minor magnetization loops obtained by repeated field cycling allow us to determine the pinning and "equilibrium" properties of the stable state of the vortex lattice at a given field and temperature unambiguously. The data imply the occurence of a first order phase transition from an ordered phase to a disordered vortex phase across the peak effect., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures. Corresponding author: S. A universal phase diagram for weakly pinned low-T$_c$ type-II superconductors is revisited and extended with new proposals. The low-temperature ``Bragg glass'' phase is argued to transform first into a disordered, glassy phase upon heating. This glassy phase, a continuation of the high-field equilibrium vortex glass phase, then melts at higher temperatures into a liquid. This proposal provides an explanation for the anomalies observed in the peak effect regime of 2H-NbSe$_2$ and several other low-T$_c$ materials which is independent of the microscopic mechanisms of superconductivity in these systems., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures

Recent studies have shown a number of surprising vortex dynamics phenomena both in low and high temperature superconductors, which include: low frequency noise, slow voltage oscillations, history dependent dynamic response, memory of the direction, amplitude, duration, and frequency of the previously applied current, suppression of a large ac vortex response by a very small dc bias, and a strong frequency dependence. Taken together, these phenomena are incompatible with the current understanding of bulk vortex dynamics. We propose a generic mechanism to account for these observations in terms of the competition between the injection of a disordered vortex phase through the surface barriers at the sample edges, and the annealing of this metastable disorder by the transport current. The model is confirmed by investigating the current distribution across NbSe2 single crystals using arrays of Hall sensors. For an ac current only narrow regions near the edges are in the pinned disordered phase resulting in a large response. In the presence of a dc bias a wide region of the sample is filled by the disordered phase preventing vortex motion. The resulting spatial variation of the disorder across the sample acts as an active memory of the previously applied current sequence., Comment: 15 pages 4 figures. We report on experiments probing the evolution of a vortex state in response to a driving current in 2H-NbSe$_2$ crystals. By following the vortex motion with fast transport measurements we find that the current enables the system to reorganize and access new configurations. During this process the system exhibits a long-term memory: if the current is turned off the vortices freeze in place remembering their prior motion. When the current is restored the motion resumes where it stopped. The experiments provide evidence for a dynamically driven structural change of the vortex lattice and a corresponding dynamic phase diagram that contains a previously unknown regime where the critical current can be either $increased$ or $decreased$ by applying an appropriate driving current., Comment: 5 pages, 4figures

We have measured the response of the flux-line lattice in the low T$_c$ superconductor, 2H-NbSe$_2$, to finite frequency drives. In a well-defined range of fields, temperatures, and driving amplitudes the system exhibits a variety of novel non-linear phenomena. Most strikingly, the flux-lines can move easily in response to currents that are significantly lower than the DC critical current if the direction of the current is reversed periodically while the amplitude, I, is kept fixed, but they do not respond to a current that periodically switches between zero and I, while the direction is kept fixed. Pronounced memory effects associated with these phenomena indicate the presence of dynamically generated structural changes in the flux lattice., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figuress
