Search

Observing the amplitude-Higgs mode in superconductors has been a central challenge in condensed matter physics. Unlike the phase mode in the electromagnetic (EM) response, the amplitude mode is not needed to satisfy gauge invariance. Indeed, it couples to linear EM response properties only in special superconductors that are associated with a pairing vector $\mathbf{Q} \neq 0$. In this paper we characterize the amplitude-mode contribution within a gauge-invariant treatment of the linear optical conductivity for these non-uniform superconductors, noting that they are by their very nature particularly vulnerable to pair-breaking from non-magnetic impurities. This leads to inevitable damping of the Higgs mode. Our gauge-invariant formulation provides an in-depth understanding of two sets of $f$-sum rules which must be obeyed. We illustrate how difficult it is to disentangle the neutral amplitude mode contributions from those of the charged quasi-particles. These observations are presented in the context of an applied supercurrent, where we observe a new low-frequency feature that reflects the superfluid density and appears consistent with recent experiments., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

In this paper we address the question of whether high-temperature superconductors have anything in common with BCS-BEC crossover theory. Towards this goal, we present a proposal and related predictions which provide a concrete test for the applicability of this theoretical framework. These predictions characterize the behavior of the Ginzburg-Landau coherence length, $\xi_0^{\text{coh}}$, near the transition temperature $T_{\text{c}}$, and across the entire superconducting $T_{\text{c}}$ dome in the phase diagram. That we are lacking a systematic characterization of $\xi_0^{\text{coh}}$ in the entire class of cuprate superconductors is perhaps surprising, as it is one of the most fundamental properties of any superconductor. This paper is written to motivate further experiments and, thus, address this shortcoming. New developments in superconductivity, particularly through unexpected and often astonishing forms of superconducting materials, continue to excite the community and stimulate theory. It is now becoming clear that there are two distinct platforms for superconductivity: natural and synthetic materials. The study of these artificial materials has greatly expanded in the last decade or so, with the discoveries of new forms of superfluidity in artificial heterostructures and the exploitation of proximitization. Natural superconductors continue to surprise through the Fe-based pnictides and chalcogenides, and nickelates as well as others. It is the goal of this review to present this two-pronged investigation into superconductors, with a focus on those that we have come to understand belong somewhere between the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) regimes. We characterize in detail the nature of this "crossover" superconductivity, which is to be distinguished from crossover superfluidity in atomic Fermi gases. In the process, we address the multiple ways of promoting a system out of the BCS and into the BCS-BEC crossover regime within the context of concrete experimental realizations. These involve natural materials, such as organic conductors, as well as artificial, mostly two-dimensional materials, such as magic-angle twisted bilayer and trilayer graphene, or gate-controlled devices, as well as one-layer and interfacial superconducting films. This work should be viewed as a celebration of BCS theory by showing that even though this theory was initially implemented with the special case of weak correlations in mind, it can in a very natural way be extended to treat the case of these more exotic strongly correlated superconductors., Comment: v5, close to the published version. 54 pages, 40 figures

In this paper we present a consolidated equation for all low-field transport coefficients, based on a reservoir approach developed for non-interacting quasiparticles. This formalism allows us to treat the two distinct types of charged (fermionic and bosonic) quasiparticles that can be simultaneously present, as for example in superconductors. Indeed, in the underdoped cuprate superconductors these two types of carriers result in two onset temperatures with distinct features in transport: $T^*$, where the fermions first experience an excitation (pseudo)gap, and $T_c$, where bosonic conduction processes are dominant and often divergent. This provides the central goal of this paper, which is to address the challenges in thermoelectric transport that stem from having two characteristic temperatures as well as two types of charge carriers whose contributions can in some instances enhance each other and in others compete. We show how essential features of the cuprates (their bad-metal character and the presence of Fermi arcs) provide an explanation for the classic pseudogap onset signatures at $T^*$ in the longitudinal resistivity, $\rho_{xx}$. We study quantum geometric contributions to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature, $T_{\mathrm{BKT}}$, in the presence of fluctuations beyond BCS theory. Because quantum geometric effects become progressively more important with stronger pairing attraction, a full understanding of 2D multi-orbital superconductivity requires the incorporation of preformed pairs. We find it is through the effective mass of these pairs that quantum geometry enters the theory and this suggests that the quantum geometric effects are present in the non-superconducting pseudogap phase as well. Increasing these geometric contributions tends to raise $T_{\mathrm{BKT}}$ which then competes with fluctuation effects that generally depress it. We argue that a way to physically quantify the magnitude of these geometric terms is in terms of the ratio of the pairing onset temperature $T^*$ to $T_{\mathrm{BKT}}$. Our paper calls attention to an experimental study demonstrating how both temperatures and, thus, their ratio may be currently accessible. They can be extracted from the same voltage-current measurements which are generally used to establish BKT physics. This paper addresses the transition from the normal to the superfluid state in strongly correlated two dimensional fermionic superconductors and Fermi gases. We arrive at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) temperature $T_{\text{BKT}}$ as a function of \emph{attractive} pairing strength by associating it with the onset of "quasi-condensation" in the normal phase. Our approach builds on a criterion for determining the BKT transition temperature for atomic gases which is based on a well established Quantum Monte Carlo analysis of the phase space density. This latter quantity, when derived from BCS-BEC crossover theory for fermions, leads to non-monotonic behavior for $T_{\text{BKT}}$ as a function of the attractive interaction or inverse scattering length. In Fermi gases, this implies a robust superconducting dome followed by a long tail from the flat BEC asymptote, rather similar to what is observed experimentally. For lattice systems we find that $T_{\text{BKT}}$ has an absolute maximum of the order of $0.1 E_F$. We discuss how our results compare with those derived from the Nelson Kosterlitz criterion based on the mean field superfluid density and the approach to the transition from below. While there is agreement in the strict mean-field BCS regime at weak coupling, we find that at moderate pairing strength bosonic excitations cause a substantial increase in $T_\text{BKT}$ followed by an often dramatic decrease before the system enters the BEC regime., Comment: 11 pages + 6 figures; updated version

Atomic Fermi gases provide an ideal platform for studying the pairing and superfluid physics, using a Feshbach resonance between closed channel molecular states and open channel scattering states. Of particular interest is the strongly interacting regime. We show that the closed-channel fraction $Z_{cc}$ provides an effective probe for the important many-body interacting effects, especially through its density dependence, which is absent from two-body theoretical predictions. Here we measure $Z_{cc}$ as a function of interaction strength and the Fermi temperature $T_\text{F}$ in a trapped $^6$Li superfluid throughout the entire BCS--BEC crossover, in quantitative agreement with theory when important thermal contributions outside the superfluid core are taken into account. Away from the deep BEC regime, the fraction $Z_{cc}$ is sensitive to $T_\text{F}$. In particular, our data show $Z_{cc} \propto T_\text{F}^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha=1/2$ at unitarity, in quantitative agreement with calculations of a two-channel pairing fluctuation theory, and $\alpha$ increases rapidly into the BCS regime, reflecting many-body interaction effects as predicted., Comment: Updated with the final version. Experiments on planar Josephson junction architectures have recently been shown to provide an alternative way of creating topological superconductors hosting accessible Majorana modes. These zero-energy modes can be found at the ends of a one-dimensional channel in the junction of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) proximitized by two spatially separated superconductors. The channel, which is below the break between the superconductors, is not in direct contact with the superconducting leads, so that proximity coupling is expected to be weaker and less well-controlled than in the simple nanowire configuration widely discussed in the literature. This provides a strong incentive for this paper which investigates the nature of proximitization in these Josephson architectures. At a microscopic level we demonstrate how and when it can lead to topological phases. We do so by going beyond simple tunneling models through solving self-consistently the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations of a heterostructure multicomponent system involving two spatially separated $s$-wave superconductors in contact with a normal Rashba spin-orbit-coupled 2DEG. Importantly, within our self-consistent theory we present ways of maximizing the proximity-induced superconducting gap by studying the effect of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, chemical potential mismatch between the superconductor and 2DEG, and sample geometry on the gap. Finally, we note (as in experiment) a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase is also found to appear in the 2DEG channel, albeit under circumstances which are not ideal for topological superconducting phase., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures

The normal-state behavior of the temperature-dependent Hall coefficient in cuprate superconductors is investigated using linear response theory. The Hall conductivity is of paramount importance in that its sign and magnitude directly reflect the sign of the charge carriers and the size of particle-hole asymmetry effects. Here we apply a strong-pairing fluctuation theory that incorporates pseudogap effects known to be important in cuprate transport. As a result, in the vicinity of the transition temperature our theoretical approach goes beyond the conventional superconducting fluctuation formalism. In this regime, pseudogap effects are evident in both the transverse and longitudinal conductivities and the bosonic response is explicitly gauge invariant. The presence of a gap in the excitation spectrum is also apparent at higher temperatures, where the gapped fermionic quasiparticles are the dominant contribution to the Hall coefficient. The observed non-monotonic temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient therefore results from a delicate interplay between the fermionic quasiparticles and the bosonic fluctuations. An important feature of our work is that the sign of the Hall conductivity from the Cooper pair fluctuations is the same as that of their fermionic constituents. Thus, we find no sign change in the Hall coefficient above the transition temperature. This prediction is corroborated by experiments, away from special charge ordering stoichiometries. We study fermion-parity-changing quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in platform Josephson junctions. These QPTs, associated with zero-energy bound states, are rather widely observed experimentally. They emerge from numerical calculations frequently without detailed microscopic insight. Importantly, they may incorrectly lend support to claims for the observations of Majorana zero modes. In this paper we present a fully consistent solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a multi-component Josephson junction. This provides insights into the origin of the QPTs. It also makes it possible to assess the standard self energy approximations which are widely used to understand proximity coupling in topological systems. The junctions we consider are complex and chosen to mirror experiments. Our full proximity calculations associate the mechanism behind the QPT as deriving from a spatially extended, proximity-induced magnetic "defect". This defect arises because of the insulating region which effects a local reorganization of the bulk magnetization in the proximitized superconductor. Our results suggest more generally that QPTs in Josephson junctions generally do not require the existence of spin-orbit coupling and should not be confused with, nor are they indicators of, Majorana physics., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

It is often claimed that among the strongest evidence for preformed-pair physics in the cuprates are the experimentally observed large values for the diamagnetic susceptibility and Nernst coefficient. These findings are most apparent in the underdoped regime, where a pseudogap is also evident. While the conventional (Gaussian) fluctuation picture has been applied to address these results, this preformed-pair approach omits the crucial effects of a pseudogap. In this paper we remedy this omission by computing the diamagnetic susceptibility and Nernst coefficient in the presence of a normal state gap. We find a large diamagnetic response for a range of temperatures much higher than the transition temperature. In particular, we report semi-quantitative agreement with the measured diamagnetic susceptibility onset temperatures, over the entire range of hole dopings. Notable is the fact that at the lower critical doping of the superconducting dome, where the transition temperature vanishes and the pseudogap onset temperature remains large, the onset temperature for both diamagnetic and transverse thermoelectric transport coefficients tends to zero. Due to the importance attributed to the cuprate diamagnetic susceptibility and Nernst coefficient, this work helps to clarify the extent to which pairing fluctuations are a component of the cuprate pseudogap.

In this paper we demonstrate the necessity of including the generally omitted collective mode contributions in calculations of the Meissner effect for non-uniform superconductors. We consider superconducting pairing with non-zero center of mass momentum, as is relevant to high transition temperature cuprates, cold atoms, and quantum chromodynamic superconductors. For the concrete example of the Fulde-Ferrell phase we present a quantitative calculation of the superfluid density, showing the collective mode contributions are not only appreciable but that they derive from the amplitude mode of the order parameter. This latter mode (related to the Higgs mode in a charged system) is generally viewed as being invisible in conventional superconductors. However, our analysis shows that it is extremely important in pair-density wave type superconductors, where it destroys superfluidity well before the mean-field order parameter vanishes.

We show that topological phases should be realizable in readily available and well studied heterostructures. In particular we identify a new class of topological materials which are well known in spintronics: helical ferromagnet-superconducting junctions. We note that almost all previous work on topological heterostructures has focused on creating Majorana modes at the proximity interface in effectively two-dimensional or one-dimensional systems. The particular heterostructures we address exhibit finite range proximity effects leading to nodal superconductors with Majorana modes localized well away from this interface. To show this, we implement a Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) proximity numerical scheme, which importantly, involves two finite dimensions in a three dimensional junction. Incorporating this level of numerical complexity serves to distinguish ours from alternative numerical BdG approaches which are limited by generally assuming translational invariance or periodic boundary conditions along multiple directions. With this access to the edges, we are then able to illustrate in a concrete fashion the wavefunctions of Majorana zero modes, and, moreover, address finite size effects. In the process we establish consistency with a simple analytical model.

In this paper we show how to redress a shortcoming of the path integral scheme for fermionic superfluids and superconductors. This approach is built around a simultaneous calculation of electrodynamics and thermodynamics. An important sum rule, the compressibility sum rule, fails to be satisfied in the usual calculation of the electromagnetic and thermodynamic response at the Gaussian fluctuation level. Here we present a path integral scheme to address this inconsistency. Specifically, at the leading order we argue that the superconducting gap should be calculated using a different saddle point condition modified by the presence of an external vector potential. This leads to the well known gauge-invariant BCS electrodynamic response and is associated with the usual (mean field) expression for thermodynamics. In this way the compressibility sum rule is satisfied at the BCS level. Moreover, this scheme can be readily extended to address arbitrary higher order fluctuation theories. At any level this approach will lead to a gauge invariant and compressibility sum rule consistent treatment of electrodynamics and thermodynamics., Comment: Comments welcome. We present a general diagrammatic theory for determining consistent electromagnetic response functions in strongly correlated fermionic superfluids. The general treatment of correlations beyond BCS theory requires a new theoretical formalism not contained in the current literature. Among concrete examples are a rather extensive class of theoretical models which incorporate BCS-BEC crossover as applied to the ultra cold Fermi gases, along with theories specifically associated with the high-$T_c$ cuprates. The challenge is to maintain gauge invariance, while simultaneously incorporating additional self-energy terms arising from strong correlation effects. Central to our approach is the application of the Ward-Takahashi identity, which introduces collective mode contributions in the response functions and guarantees that the $f$-sum rule is satisfied. We outline a powerful and very general method to determine these collective modes in a manner compatible with gauge invariance. Finally, as an alternative approach, we contrast with the path integral formalism. Here, the calculation of gauge invariant response appears more straightforward. However, the collective modes introduced are essentially those of strict BCS theory, with no modification from correlation effects. Since the path integral scheme simultaneously addresses electrodynamics and thermodynamics, we emphasize that it should be subjected to a consistency test beyond gauge invariance, namely that of the compressibility sum-rule. We derive expressions for spin and density correlation functions in the (greatly enhanced) pseudogap phase of spin-orbit coupled Fermi superfluids. Density-density correlation functions are found to be relatively insensitive to the presence of these Rashba effects. To arrive at spin-spin correlation functions we derive new $f$-sum rules, valid even in the absence of a spin conservation law. Our spin-spin correlation functions are shown to be fully consistent with these $f$-sum rules. Importantly, they provide a clear signature of the Rashba band-structure and separately help to establish the presence of a pseudogap., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, with 5 page supplement

There is a multiplicity of charge ordered, pairing-based or pair density wave theories of the cuprate pseudogap, albeit arising from different microscopic mechanisms. For mean field schemes (of which there are many) we demonstrate here that they have precise implications for two body physics in the same way that they are able to address the one body physics of photoemission spectroscopy. This follows because the full vertex can be obtained exactly from the Ward-Takahashi identity. As an illustration, we present the spin response functions, finding that a recently proposed pair density wave (Amperean pairing) scheme is readily distinguishable from other related scenarios., Comment: Corrects an error in Eq. Essential to understanding the cuprate pseudogap phase is a study of the charge (and spin) response functions, which we address here via a consistent approach to the Fermi arcs and the Fermi pockets scenario of Yang, Rice and Zhang (YRZ). The two schemes are demonstrated to be formally similar, and to share a common physics platform; we use this consolidation to address the inclusion of vertex corrections which have been omitted in YRZ applications. We show vertex corrections can be easily implemented in a fashion analytically consistent with sum rules and that they yield important contributions to most observables. A study of the charge ordering susceptibility of the YRZ scenario makes their simple physics evident: they represent the inclusion of charged bosonic, spin singlet degrees of freedom, and are found to lead to a double peak structure., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, with included 4-page Supplementary Material

We address quantum oscillation experiments in high Tc superconductors and the evidence from these experiments for a pseudogap versus a Fermi liquid phase at high magnetic fields. As a concrete alternative to a Fermi liquid phase, the pseudogap state we consider derives from earlier work within a Gor'kov-based Landau level approach. Here the normal state pairing gap in the presence of high fields is spatially non-uniform, incorporating small gap values. These, in addition to d-wave gap nodes, are responsible for the persistence of quantum oscillations. Important here are methodologies for distinguishing different scenarios. To this end we examine the temperature dependence of the oscillations. Detailed quantitative analysis of this temperature dependence demonstrates that a high field pseudogap state in the cuprates may well "masquerade" as a Fermi liquid., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We present a theoretical study of the compressibility, $\kappa$, in a Fermi gas with attractive contact interactions, providing predictions for the strongly-attractive regime and the superfluid phase. Our work emphasizes the compressibility sum rule and gauge invariance as constraints on $\kappa$ and we show how within a particular $t$-matrix approach, these can be satisfied in the normal phase when no approximations are made. For tractability, approximations must be introduced, and it is believed that thermodynamical approaches to $\kappa$ are more reliable, than correlation function based schemes. Contrasting with other studies in the literature, we present thermodynamic calculations of $\kappa$; these yield semi-quantitative agreement with experiment and provide physical insight into similar results obtained via quantum Monte Carlo simulations., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

We study the static and dynamic behavior of charge ordering within a d-wave pair pseudogap (pg) scenario. This is addressed using a density-density correlation function derived from the standard pg self energy, $\Sigma$ and compatible with the longitudinal and transverse sum rules. The broadening factor $\gamma$ in $\Sigma$ reflects the breaking of pairs into constituent fermions. We apply this form for $\Sigma$ (derived elsewhere for high fields) to demonstrate the existence of quantum oscillations in a non-Fermi liquid pg state. Our conclusion is that the pseudogap-induced pairbreaking, via $\gamma$, allows the underlying fermiology to be revealed; in YBCO, finite $\omega$ and $\gamma$ enable antinodal fluctuations, despite the competition with a d-wave gap in the static and superconducting limits., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

In this paper we deduce transport properties in the presence of a pseudogap associated with precursor superconductivity. Our theoretical analysis is based on the widely adopted self energy expression reflecting this normal state gap, which has appeared in interpretations of photoemission and in other experiments. Thus, it should be generally applicable. Here we address THz conductivity $\sigma (\omega) = \sigma_1(\omega) + i \sigma_2(\omega)$ measurements in the underdoped high temperature superconductors and arrive at reasonable agreement between theory and recent experiment for both $\sigma_1$ and $\sigma_2$ above and below $T_c$., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

In this paper we apply the emerging- consensus understanding of the fermionic self energy deduced from angle resolved photoemisssion spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments to deduce the implications for orbital diamagnetism in the underdoped cuprates. Many theories using many different starting points have arrived at a broadened BCS-like form for the normal state self energy associated with a d-wave excitation gap, as is compatible with ARPES data. Establishing compatibility with the f-sum rules, we show how this self energy, along with the constraint that there is no Meissner effect in the normal phase are sufficient to deduce the orbital susceptibility. We conclude, moreover, that diamagnetism is large for a d-wave pseudogap. We address the important question of how to characterize the normal state of fermionic superfluids under the influence of a strong effective magnetic field, implemented through rapid rotation or novel artificial field techniques. We consider the effects of crossing from BCS to BEC and the role of non-condensed pairs, or pseudogap effects. Using a simple extension of Gor'kov theory we demonstrate how these pairs organize above the transition $T_c$ into precursors of a vortex configuration, which are associated with distortions of the ideal Abrikosov lattice. This non-uniform normal state appears to enable "Bose condensation" in a field which is otherwise problematic due to the effective one-dimensionality of Landau level dispersion., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Transport studies seem to be one of the strongest lines of support for a preformed pair approach to the pseudogap. In this paper we provide a fresh, physically transparent look at two important quantities: the diamagnetic susceptibility and conductivity. We use a three dimensional preformed pair framework which has had some success in the cold Fermi gases and in the process we reconcile recently observed inconsistencies. Specifically, while the preformed pairs in our theory give a large contribution to the diamagnetic susceptibility, the imaginary part of the conductivity is suppressed to zero much closer to $T_c$, as is observed experimentally., Comment: 6 pages

We extend Gor'kov theory to address superconducting pairing at high magnetic fields and general temperatures with arbitrary attractive interaction strength. This analysis begins with a new interpretation of the high-field Gor'kov gap equation which we associate with an instability in a generalized particle-particle ladder series. Importantly, this interpretation of the non-linear gap equation enables a treatment of pairing which is distinct from condensation. We also show how to consolidate two distinct fermionic pairing schemes in real and momentum space, both corresponding to an Abrikosov lattice. Numerical results for the fermionic local density of states demonstrate that gapless structure in a field is robust and presumably relevant to quantum oscillation experiments. We find that despite their differences, both pairing schemes contain very similar physics. We address how the finite frequency real conductivity $\sigma(\omega)$ in the underdoped cuprates is affected by the pseudogap, contrasting the behavior above and below $T_c$. The f-sum rule is analytically shown to hold. Here we presume the pseudogap is associated with non-condensed pairs arising from stronger-than-BCS attraction. This leads to both a Drude and a mid infrared (MIR) peak, the latter associated with the energy needed to break pairs. These general characteristics appear consistent with experiment. We study the spontaneous formation of vortices during the superfluid condensation in a trapped fermionic gas subjected to a rapid thermal quench via evaporative cooling. Our work is based on the numerical solution of the time dependent crossover Ginzburg-Landau equation coupled to the heat diffusion equation. We quantify the evolution of condensate density and vortex length as a function of a crossover phase parameter from BCS to BEC. In this paper, we examine in a unified fashion dissipative transport in strongly correlated systems. We thereby demonstrate the connection between "bad metals" (such as the high temperature superconductors) and "perfect fluids" (such as the ultracold Fermi gases, near unitarity). One motivation of this work is to communicate to the high energy physics community some of the central unsolved problems in high $T_c$ superconductors. Because of interest in the nearly perfect fluidity of the cold gases and because of new tools such as the AdS/CFT correspondence, this better communication may lead to important progress in a variety of different fields. A second motivation is to draw attention to the great power of transport measurements which more directly reflect the excitation spectrum than, say, thermodynamics and thus strongly constrain microscopic theories of correlated fermionic superfluids. Our calculations show that bad metal and perfect fluid behavior is associated with the presence of a normal state excitation gap which suppresses the effective number of carriers leading to anomalously low conductivity and viscosity above the transition temperature $T_c$. Below $T_c$ we demonstrate that the condensate collective modes ("phonons") do not couple to transverse probes such as the shear viscosity. As a result, our calculated shear viscosity at low $T$ becomes arbitrarily small as observed in experiments. In both homogeneous and trap calculations we do not find the upturn in $\eta$ or $\eta/s$ (where $s$ is the entropy density) found in most theories. In the process of these studies we demonstrate compatibility with the transverse sum rule and find reasonable agreement with both viscosity and cuprate conductivity experiments., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures

We show how Fermi liquid theory can be applied to ultra-cold Fermi gases, thereby expanding their "simulation" capabilities to a class of problems of interest to multiple physics sub-disciplines. We introduce procedures for measuring and calculating position dependent Landau parameters. This lays the ground work for addressing important controversial issues: (i) the suggestion that thermodynamically, the normal state of a unitary gas is indistinguishable from a Fermi liquid (ii) that a fermionic system with strong repulsive contact interactions is associated with either ferromagnetism or localization; this relates as well to $^3$He and its p-wave superfluidity., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, revised version

Using a precursor superconductivity scenario for the cuprates we present a theory for the temperature dependent behavior of the spectral gaps associated with four distinct spectroscopies: angle resolved photoemission (ARPES), differential conductance $dI/dV$, quasi-particle interference spectroscopy, and the autocorrelated ARPES pattern. We find good agreement for a range of existing experiments and make predictions for others. Our theory, which incorporates the necessary (observed) contrast between the nodal and anti-nodal response, shows how different nodal gap shapes are associated with these alternative spectroscopies., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

This paper presents a comparison of two finite-temperature BCS-Bose Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover theories above the transition temperature: Nozieres Schmitt-Rink (NSR) theory and finite $T$-extended BCS-Leggett theory. The comparison is cast in the form of numerical studies of the behavior of the fermionic spectral function both theoretically and as constrained by (primarily) radio frequency (RF) experiments. Both theories include pair fluctuations and exhibit pseudogap effects, although the nature of this pseudogap is very different. The pseudogap in finite $T$-extended BCS-Leggett theory is found to follow a BCS-like dispersion which, in turn, is associated with a broadened BCS-like self energy, rather more similar to what is observed in high temperature superconductors (albeit, for a d-wave case). The fermionic quasi-particle dispersion is different in NSR theory and the damping is considerably larger. We argue that the two theories are appropriate in different temperature regimes with the BCS-Leggett approach more suitable nearer to condensation. There should, in effect, be little difference at higher $T$ as the pseudogap becomes weaker and where the simplifying approximations used in the BCS-Leggett approach break down. On the basis of momentum-integrated radio frequency studies of unpolarized gases, it would be difficult to distinguish which theory is the better. A full comparison for polarized gases is not possible since there is claimed to be inconsistencies in the NSR approach (not found in the BCS-Leggett scheme). Future experiments along the lines of momentum resolved experiments look to be very promising in distinguishing the two theories., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

In this paper we explore the behavior of the quasi-particle interference pattern (QPI) of scanning tunneling microscopy as a function of temperature, $T$. After insuring a minimal consistency with photoemission, we find that the QPI pattern is profoundly sensitive to quasi-particle coherence and that it manifests two energy gap scales. The nearly dispersionless QPI pattern above $T_c$ is consistent with data on moderately underdoped cuprates. To illustrate the important two energy scale physics we present predictions of the QPI--inferred energy gaps as a function of $T$ for future experiments on moderately underdoped cuprates., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We show how, within a preformed pair scenario for the cuprate pseudogap, the nodal and antinodal responses in angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy necessarily have very different temperature $T$ dependences. We examine the behavior and the contrasting $T$ dependences for a range of temperatures both below and above $T_c$. Our calculations are based on a fully microscopic $T$-matrix approach for addressing pairing correlations in a regime where the attraction is stronger than BCS and the coherence length is anomalously short. Previously, the distinct nodal and anti-nodal responses have provided strong support for the "two-gap scenario" of the cuprates in which the pseudogap competes with superconductivity. Instead, our theory supports a picture in which the pseudogap derives from pairing correlations, identifying the two gap components with non-condensed and condensed pairs. It leads to reasonably good agreement with a range of different experiments in the moderately underdoped regime and we emphasize that here there is no explicit curve fitting. Ours is a microscopic rather than a phenomenological theory. We briefly address the more heavily underdoped regime in which the behavior is more complex., Comment: 12 pages; 10 figures

We determine the superfluid transition temperature $T_c$ and related finite temperature phase diagrams for the entire BCS-Bose Einstein condensation crossover in a homogeneous mixture of $^{6}$Li and $^{40}$K atoms with population imbalance. Our work is motivated by the recent observation of an inter-species Feshbach resonance. Pairing fluctuation effects, which significantly reduce $T_c$ from the onset temperature for pairing ($T^*$), provide reasonable estimates of $T_c$ and indicate that the inter-species superfluid phase should be accessible in future experiments. Although a generalized-Sarma phase is not stable in the ground state near unitarity, our phase diagrams show that it appears as an intermediate-temperature superfluid., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

In this paper we present an overview of radio frequency (RF) spectroscopy in the atomic Fermi superfluids. An ultimate goal is to suggest new directions in the cold gas research agenda from the condensed matter perspective.Our focus is on the experimental and theoretical literature of cold gases and photoemission spectroscopy of the cuprates particularly as it pertains to areas of overlap. This paper contains a systematic overview of the theory of RF spectroscopy, both momentum integrated and momentum resolved. We discuss the effects of traps, population imbalance, final state interactions over the entire range of temperatures and compare theory and experiment. We show that this broad range of phenomena can be accomodated within the BCS-Leggett description of BCS-BEC crossover and that this scheme also captures some of the central observations in photoemission experiments in the cuprates. In this last context, we note that the key themes which have emerged in cuprate photoemission studies involve characterization of the fermionic self energy, of the pseudogap and of the effects of superconducting coherence (in passing from above to below the superfluid transition temperature, $T_c$).These issues have a counterpart in the cold Fermi gases and it would be most useful in future to use these atomic systems to address these and the more sweeping question of how to describe that anomalous superfluid phase which forms in the presence of a normal state excitation gap., Comment: 23 pages, 22 figures

The subject of BCS - Bose Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover is particularly exciting because of its realization in ultracold Fermi gases and its possible relevance to high temperature superconductors. In the paper we review that body of theoretical work on this subject which represents a natural extension of the seminal papers by Leggett and by Nozieres and Schmitt-Rink (NSR). The former addressed only the ground state, now known as the "BCS-Leggett" wave-function and the key contributions of the latter pertain to calculations of the superfluid transition temperature $T_c$. These two papers have given rise to two main and, importantly, distinct, theoretical schools in the BCS-BEC crossover literature. The first of these extends the BCS-Leggett ground state to finite temperature and the second extends the NSR scheme away from $T_c$ both in the superfluid and normal phases. It is now rather widely accepted that these extensions of NSR produce a different ground state than that first introduced by Leggett. Our analysis shows how the NSR-based approach views the bosonic contributions more completely but it treats the fermions as "quasi-free". By contrast, the BCS-Leggett based approach treats the fermionic contributions more completely but it treats the bosons as "quasi-free". The NSR based schemes approach the crossover between BCS and BEC by starting from the BEC limit and the BCS-Leggett based scheme approaches this crossover by starting from the BCS limit. Ultimately, one would like to combine these two schemes. In this paper we review the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches. To reach a full understanding, it is important in the future to invest effort in investigating in more detail the T=0 aspects of NSR-based theory and the $T \neq 0$ aspects of BCS-Leggett theory., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

In this paper we address the behavior of the superfluid transition temperature $T_c$ in the attractive Hubbard model. We study systematically the effects of pairing fluctuations and address all filling fractions over the entire range of attractive interaction strength. While the attractive Hubbard model can be regarded as the generalization of BCS to Bose Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover to a lattice, we find that the BEC limit of this Hubbard model is very different from that of jellium, owing to the strong inter-site repulsion between pairs, which becomes important near half filling when the on-site attraction is strong. A central conclusion of our work is that in a lattice, around half filling, the smooth evolution from the BCS to the BEC limits is interrupted. For the attractive Hubbard model, $T_c$ vanishes when the system approaches the bosonic regime with increasing interaction strength. We suggest that the vanishing of $T_c$ at strong coupling strength may signal a quantum critical transition to another form of superfluid not continuously connected to a BCS-like phase. We present a simple variational ansatz for the ground state in this more strongly coupled superfluid. We further generalize the (s-wave) Hubbard model to d-wave pairing and address issues of potential relevance to high temperature superconductors. For the d-wave case, we present a phase diagram and show that here too, one observes a vanishing of $T_c$ when the pairing onset temperature $T^*$ becomes sufficiently large. We suggest that future experiments on ultracold fermions in optical lattices should not be exclusively limited to the repulsive Hubbard model, but should address the attractive model in order to elucidate features of high temperature superconductivity., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We address recent momentum resolved radio frequency (RF) experiments on ultracold trapped Fermi gases of $^{40}$K. We show that momentum resolved RF probes provide measurements of the centrally important fermionic spectral function. They also serve to remove ambiguity plaguing the interpretation of momentum integrated RF experiments by establishing a clear dispersion signature of pairing. We find that the temperature dependence of the spectral function is dramatic at unitarity, and, importantly, smooth from above to below $T_c$ throughout BCS-BEC crossover. We present a systematic characterization of the radio frequency (RF) spectra of homogeneous, paired atomic Fermi gases at finite temperatures, $T$, in the presence of final state interactions. The spectra, consisting of possible bound states and positive as well as negative detuning ($\nu$) continua, satisfy exactly the zeroth- and first-moment sum rules at all $T$. We show how to detect the $\nu < 0$ continuum arising from thermally excited quasiparticles, which has not yet been seen experimentally. We explain semi-quantitatively recent RF experiments on "bound-bound" transitions and, thereby, predict the associated effects of varying temperature., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We show how recent angle resolved photoemission measurements addressing the Fermi arcs in the cuprates reveal a very natural phenomenological description of the complex superfluid phase. Importantly, this phenomenology is consistent with a previously presented microscopic theory. By distinguishing the order parameter and the excitation gap, we are able to demonstrate how the collapse of the arcs below $T_c$ into well defined nodes is associated with the \emph{smooth} emergence of superconducting coherence. Motivated by recent experiments, we address, in a fully self consistent fashion, the behavior and evolution of radio frequency (RF) spectra as temperature and polarization are varied in population imbalanced Fermi gases. We discuss a series of scenarios for the experimentally observed zero temperature pseudogap phase and show how present and future RF experiments may help in its elucidation. We address the thermodynamics, density profiles and superfluid density of trapped fermions undergoing BCS-BEC crossover, with and without population imbalance. Our approach represents a fully consistent treatment of "pseudogap effects", which reflect the distinction between the pair formation temperature $T^*$ and the pair condensation temperature $T_c$ and must be accommodated by modifying the fermionic excitation spectrum. This distinction has been omitted from all other many body approaches in the literature. We show how enforcing this corollary implies that pairing fluctuation contributions enter into both the gap and the number equations; this is necessary in order to be consistent with a generalized Ward identity. Furthermore, we demonstrate that we obtain physical results for the superfluid density $n_s(T)$ at all $T$. In contrast, previous work in the literature has led to ill-behaved $n_s(T)$. The superfluid density is a critical measure of the physicality of a given crossover theory. In order to properly address thermodynamic properties of a trapped Fermi gas, it is necessary to demonstrate that the particle density profiles are consistent with experiment. The lack of demonstrable consistency between theoretical and experimental density profiles, along with problematic behavior found for $n_s(T)$, casts doubt on previous claims in the literature concerning quantitative agreement between thermodynamical calculations and experiment., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures. We determine the superfluid transition temperatures $T_c$ and the ground states of the attractive Hubbard model and find new insulating phases associated with non-integer filling at sufficiently strong pairing attraction $|U|$. These states, distinct from band and Mott insulating phases, derive from pair localization; pair hopping at large $|U|$ and high densities is impeded by inter-site, inter-pair repulsive interactions. We determine the temperature $T$ dependence of first and second sound mode frequencies for trapped Fermi gases undergoing BCS to Bose Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover. Our results are based on the two fluid equations in conjunction with a microscopic calculation of thermodynamical variables. As in experiment and at unitarity, we show that the lowest radial breathing mode is $T$ independent. At finite $T$, higher order breathing modes strongly mix with second sound. We present a pairing fluctuation theory which self-consistently incorporates finite momentum pair excitations in the context of BCS--Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover, and we apply this theory to high $T_c$ superconductors and ultracold Fermi gases. There are strong similarities between Fermi gases in the unitary regime and high Tc superconductors. Here we address key issues of common interest, especially the pseudogap. We present phase diagrams for population imbalanced, trapped Fermi superfluids near unitarity. In addition to providing quantitative values for the superfluid transition temperature, the pairing onset temperature and the transition line (separating the Sarma and phase separation regimes), we study experimental signatures of these transitions based on density profiles and density differences at the center. We review recent developments in the field of ultracold atomic Fermi gases. As the cold atom system evolves from BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), the behavior of the thermodynamics, and the particle density profiles evolves smoothly in a way which can be well understood theoretically. In the interesting "unitary" regime, we show that these and other data necessarily requires the introduction of a pseudogap in the fermionic spectrum which exhibits many striking similarities to its counterpart in underdoped high $T_c$ superconductors. We study the single-plane-wave Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell (LOFF) states for BCS--Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover at general temperatures $T$. Because we include the important effects of noncondensed pairs, our $T \neq 0$ phase diagrams are different from those reported in earlier work. We find that generalized LOFF phases may be the ground state for a wide range of (weak through moderately strong) interactions, including the unitary regime.
