We investigated a dielectric transmission line consisting of three dielectric substrate layers for millimeter-wave (mmW) applications. This line is referred to as a narrowed dielectric microstrip line (N-DML). The effective dielectric constant method is used to analyze the propagation characteristics of the N-DML. The result of the analysis of the normalized phase constant is consistent with the simulation. For demonstration, two J -band N-DML prototypes of different lengths with transitions to rectangular waveguides were designed, fabricated, and measured. Good agreement between the simulated and measured results is observed. In particular, due to its nonmetal structure, the N-DML shows a low average attenuation constant of only 0.52 dB/cm over 220-280 GHz in the experiment. Due to its good performance, ease of fabrication, low loss, and low cost, the N-DML is a suitable candidate for various mmW applications.

In this study, flexible and uniform multiwall carbon nanotube embedded polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sheets were prepared using a vacuum filtration and transfer process. The resistance of the sheets and microstructures were investigated for the fabrication of ideal probe-fed and microstrip-fed patch antennas. Simulation results showed that the resonance and gain of an antenna were affected by the conductivity of the patch significantly. The return loss and gain are acceptable when a conductivity of 10 5 S/m is used. The stretchability test indicated that a gold-coated sheet was more stable than a pristine sheet. Its resistance has a change of 0.5% only, with a displacement of 2500 μm. The frequency-tuning capability was demonstrated using an air inflatable microstrip-fed patch antenna. The working frequency can be tuned by 6.5% with a displacement of 1500 μm, which was higher than that of previously reported MEMS bridge and electrostatic force tunable antennas. This is the first time that a frequency tunable antenna fabricated by PDMS/carbon nanotube is reported. The optimization methods for this type of antenna are discussed and some potential applications such as remote wireless pressure sensors are proposed.

In this study, the fast response resistive humidity sensing properties of polyimide/multiwall carbon nanotube (PI/MWNT) composite films were demonstrated. A composite film with a loading of 3 wt% MWNTs possesses a very linear response nature, a linearity correlation (R2) of 0.99157 and a sensitivity of 0.00146/%RH. The response time was less than 5 s and the resistance changed synchronously with different humidities. The recoverable and repeatable resistive responses affirmed the high efficiency of this film for fast humidity detection. A negative temperature effect was found and proper temperature compensation should be considered in the future applications. Moreover, the humidity sensing properties were presented as a bulk effect owing to water penetration. The stability of the films was proven, which further confirmed that the films could be used as reliable sensor materials. The surfaces of the films were found as an organized structure with nano-size dimples, which is helpful for absorption of water molecules. The proposed sensing mechanisms are related with tunnel effects, doping of MWNTs by water and a barrier effect between MWNTs.

The process of thermal imidization reaction is significant for temperature and time control in the polyimide industry. Here, we report the effect of carbon nanotubes and their states of dispersion on the thermal imidization of the precursor films of polyimide (poly(amic acid)) for the first time. The curing process was followed by measuring Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectra, fluorescence spectra, thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimeter (TG-DSC) properties and the refractive indices of films. It was found that by evenly dispersing 1 wt% of carbon nanotubes assisted by a dispersant in the poly(amic acid),the full imidization temperature of the polyimide can be reduced from 300 °C to 250 °C. Different states of distribution of CNTs were observed by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and proved that a better dispersion of carbon nanotubes dramatically enhanced the speed of imidization. Moreover, the DSC results showed that lower decomposition temperature of poly(amic acid) could be obtained with more uniform distribution of carbon nanotubes, which means the process of cyclodehydration of the poly(amic acid) was accelerated.

In this study, the effects of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, polyvinylpyrrolidone, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate/polyvinylpyrrolidone, and Triton X-100 on the dispersion of 0.1 wt% carbon nanotubes in dimethylacetamide are reported. Sedimentation results show that except for sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, all the surfactant-assisted carbon nanotube solutions have visually-stable dispersions for at least two months, and even the samples without a surfactant gave no obvious deposition. UV-Vis spectra of the dispersions with and without acid-treatment proved that the carboxyl group attached to the carbon nanotubes positively improves the dispersion effect. The states of aggregation of carbon nanotubes treated by different surfactants are distinctive, and the electrical properties of carbon nanotubes are strongly related to these states of aggregation. The best dispersing and stabilizing effect was found in the sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate/polyvinylpyrrolidone sample, which also gave the lowest resistance (2.15 x 10(4) omega at 20 V) among all the surfactant-treated stable suspensions.

Nd/V co-doped Bi4Ti3O12 ceramics, Bi4−yNdyTi2.98V 0.02O12.01 (BNTV, y = 0.16 , 0.26, 0.36 and 0.56), were prepared using a solid-state reaction method and their phase assemblages, microstructure, dielectric and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The Curie temperature of BNTV ceramics decreases with increasing Nd concentration. The loss tangent of the materials is much lower (1.8% at 400 ∘C/100 kHz for BNTV0256) than that of BIT sample (77%). Besides, BNTV ceramics exhibit saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loops with 2Pr of 26–31 μC/cm2 and Ec of 41–57.5 kV/cm.
