Background: Qualitative research methods (QRMs) bear a critical role in psychiatry as they explore the phenomenology of psychiatric illness and its sociocultural dimensions. However, there is limited evidence regarding its use in psychiatric research in India. Aim: This study, under the aegis of mapping qualitative health research in India initiative, attempted to landscape the use of QRMs in psychiatry and elicited expert opinion on its potential, perceived quality, and scope for improvement. Materials and Methods: We reviewed studies using qualitative methodology published in the Indian Journal of Psychiatry (IJP) and the abstracts presented at the Annual Conference of the Indian Psychiatric Society (ANCIPS) between 2010 and 2019. Titles and abstracts were screened and shortlisted; full-text articles were checked to identify the relevant ones. In addition, ten experts comprising psychiatry journal reviewers, editors, and conference scientific committee members were interviewed to elicit their views and suggestions. Results: Out of 356 papers published in IJP between 2010 and 2019, only 12 papers used QRMs: five qualitative and seven mixed methods. Out of 2297 abstracts published between 2010 and 2019 in ANCIPS, only 28 had used QRMs, consisting of 20 qualitative and eight mixed methods. The findings reveal that qualitative research is still an understudied domain in Indian psychiatry with a substantial need for rigor and quality. Conclusions: To catalyze the use of qualitative research in Indian psychiatry, continuing medical education programs through workshops or webinar mode need to be imparted. Background Currently, 1 in 10 people diagnosed with dementia in Ireland are aged under 65, this is termed "Younger Onset Dementia" (YOD). Though small in numbers these figures (4000 people) are increasing, and important differences exist between people diagnosed with (PwYOD) and those diagnosed with later onset dementia (LOD). As dementia is normally associated with advancing age, clinicians are not always on the alert for its diagnosis in younger people. Diagnosing YOD can be especially challenging since presentation may be atypical and there is a lack of clinical ownership in this area. Methods A structured literature review was conducted to identify optimum models of diagnostic processes and pathways for PwYOD. Two research questions were addressed: (i) what models for the diagnosis of PwYOD exist nationally and internationally, and what evidence supports these and (ii) what are the differences between diagnostic processes and pathways for PwYOD compared with PwLOD. A systematic search strategy was devised to identify all relevant scientific papers. Key databases were used, supplemented by grey literature searches. A narrative synthesis approach was undertaken to assess the literature identified. Results Pathways and processes to the diagnosis of YOD are unclear and complex and compared with LOD, diagnosis takes more time. PwYOD are more likely to have multiple referrals to different specialists, have their memory and cognitive complaints misattributed to other factors such as depression and experience longer delays in obtaining a diagnosis. Conclusion Few evidence-based best-practice models or guidelines for the diagnosis of YOD exist internationally. Increased awareness of the signs and symptoms of YOD among all healthcare professionals is necessary. There is a need for improved linkages to be developed between Geriatric Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Primary Care services and in certain instances for suspected cases of YOD to be referred to neurology-led memory clinics. Psychiatry trainees in Iraq face many challenges that limit their immediate access to training opportunities. These include limited opportunities to attend international conferences due to visa restrictions, reduced access to evidence-based practice and guidelines and less experience in conducting quality improvement projects and audits. There are also issues related to their training programmes, including lack of regular meetings with supervisors and fewer opportunities for case-based discussions. Clinical Psychiatry is thus a potential key affected clinical domain due to the above factors. Technological advances in the field of e-learning created concepts such as Technology-enhanced or Web-based learning (TEL or WBL). These developments enabled the formation of "virtual teams" using an online platform. These teams overcome logistical geographical and other barriers to enable professionals to connect and learn from each other. This paper includes an appraisal of the TEL, looking at its advantages and challenges in meeting the needs of learners and educators. Also, we describe how we incorporated evidence-based and good practice guidelines on TEL use in these circumstances to the design, delivery and early evaluation of the distance learning programme. In our conclusion, we add to these and draw attention to the use of established online platforms (Medicine Africa in this case) and the importance of involving Iraqi Training leads, trainees and institutions in identifying trainee learning needs and supporting existing training provisions. Background: Despite the progress in treatment and clinical outcomes, schizophrenia remains a highly stigmatized disease and imposes a challenge to families and patients towards recovery. Stigma can debilitate individuals as much as the disease itself, representing one of the most relevant obstacles to overcome the illness: it hinders the pursuit of autonomy and achievement of life goals. Stigma is complex and multilayered and its research usually focus on patients and society, but a lower number of studies address health professionals stigma. Even fewer investigate stigma of researchers. Thus, our objective is to analyze how the most cited research papers published in 2018 addressing schizophrenia depict the disease to identify putative stigma among researchers. Methods: In this exploratory study, we conducted a search using Web of Science (WoS) with the following terms: (“patients with schizophrenia”) OR (“schizophrenia patients”). We restricted the search to articles published in 2018 and selected the 20 studies with the highest total number of citations. We identified how the authors defined schizophrenia and then categorized the definition in three groups: (1) negative perspective, in which depreciative words were used to define the disease; (2) neutral definition, in which emphasis is given to the description of epidemiological data; and (3) neutral to positive definition, when negative outcomes were listed as possibilities, not certainties. Two independent authors (G.K. and M.M.) categorized each article and eventual conflicts were solved by a third author (A.G.) Results: 25% of the studies depicted a clearly negative perspective of schizophrenia. In these studies, the disease was described with words such as “devastating” and “highly disabling”. Most studies (60%) were coded as neutral, being mainly descriptive of current epidemiological data. Only 3 studies (15%) were identified as more favorable, since they acknowledged the possibility of better outcomes among patients with schizophrenia. Discussion: In the current schizophrenia scientific literature, negative views of the disease are still largely common. Considering the role of highly cited papers as opinion formers, we suggest that as occurred in other fields, such as the change in address of suicide by the media, some orientation should be adopted to avoid further contributions to the schizophrenia stigma. In 1957, the British-Indian child psychiatrist Dr Elwyn James Anthony travelled to the Zurich International Congress of Psychiatry to show a film featuring 70 children with such complex symptomatology and behaviour that they betrayed the certainty of contemporary theories of developmental psychology and psychoanalysis. This article examines the significance of Anthony's film to the creation of new scientific models in international developmental psychology and psychiatric epidemiology. It marked a significant change in the use of filmed evidence that sought to create a truly global and universalist approach to atypical child development based purely on scientific observations. This is the revised text of a lecture presented at the Joint Meeting of the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry and the Special Interest Group in Spirituality and Psychiatry on 14 December 2005. The paper explores the interface of clinical, ethical, and spiritual dimensions in the promotion of communication in dementia. Themes are derived from personal anecdotal experience, principles of logotherapy, and ethical frameworks. It is argued that individuals with dementia remain at the centre of meaningful interaction through the period of illness and that it is incumbent upon formal carers to be aware of the lasting needs of the whole individual, and not to dismiss a spiritual approach. Finally, the paper introduces suggestions for the development of an integrated framework. Strategies and tools are being developed jointly by clinicians and spiritual advisors, and are aimed at preserving the dignity of the person with dementia, their right to be accepted at different stages of decline, in recognition of a meaning to their life and experience even beyond the point where normal language skills are irreparably lost. In view of the possibility of finding meaning in suffering, life's meaning is an unconditional one, at least potentially. That unconditional meaning, however, is paralleled by the unconditional value of each and every person. It is that which warrants the indelible quality of the dignity of man. The author reviews 2 papers which were jointly awarded the "European Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry-Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ECAP-ADHD)-Paper of the Year" at a European meeting for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The paper by Imeraj and colleagues focused on two neglected but practically important issues on ADHD, namely, circadiane sleepwake behaviour and autonomic arousal while Kröger and colleagues described risk factors of increased autistic symptoms in ADHD.

The social model of disability--which is grounded in the lived realities of disabled people, as well as their activism, research, and theoretical work--has enabled a historic turn in the understanding of disability. This model also facilitates the transition to the rights-based approach that is at the core of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). However, the social model of disability does not straightforwardly translate to the lives of people who end up being detained and forcibly treated in psychiatric facilities. This paper examines the implications of the lack of an equivalent theoretical framework to counteract the hegemony of the biomedical model of "mental illness" and to underpin and guide the implementation of the CRPD for people with psychiatric diagnoses. Critically engaging with some recent attempts to make the CRPD provisions integral to psychiatry, we expose fundamental contradictions inherent in such projects. Our discussion seeks to extend the task of implementation of the CRPD beyond reforming psychiatry, suggesting a much broader agenda for change. We argue for the indispensability of first-person knowledge in developing and owning this agenda and point to the dangers of merely remaking former treatment objects into objects of human rights. The EEE WPA-Servier Academy was created in 2012. In 6 years 21 young researchers from the WPA zone 10 participated in EPA and ECNP Congresses and prepared peer-reviews on the most interesting topics for psychiatric journals of Eastern Europe. Seventy articles were written, which appeared as 91 publications in 13 journals from seven countries. As a result the first Congress of the young psychiatrists of Eastern Europe took place in Minsk (Belarus). Suzdal Schools of Young Psychiatrists have existed for more than 40 years. Their main features are distinguished: a high scientific level, diverse and rich programme, internationalization, scope, duration, variety of the methods and forms of material presentation, and a multi-stage scientific competition. The preservation of the traditions of the school and the unusual atmosphere of the School are noted. About 4000 psychiatrists of three generations are graduates of these schools. Objective: The aim of this paper is to provide a viewpoint regarding the marketing of pharmaceutical agents to psychiatrists and examine the results of a brief survey of the nature of booths, and gifts they offered, during 2009 RANZCP Congress in Adelaide. Introduces a series of articles on the state of knowledge about anxiety and panic disorders including its diagnostic formulation.

Habitual behaviours are triggered automatically, with little conscious forethought. Theory suggests that making healthy behaviours habitual, and breaking the habits that underpin many ingrained unhealthy behaviours, promotes long-term behaviour change. This has prompted interest in incorporating habit formation and disruption strategies into behaviour change interventions. Yet, notable research gaps limit understanding of how to harness habit to change real-world behaviours. Discussions among health psychology researchers and practitioners, at the 2019 European Health Psychology Society 'Synergy Expert Meeting', generated pertinent questions to guide further research into habit and health behaviour. In line with the four topics discussed at the meeting, 21 questions were identified, concerning: how habit manifests in health behaviour (3 questions); how to form healthy habits (5 questions); how to break unhealthy habits (4 questions); and how to develop and evaluate habit-based behaviour change interventions (9 questions). While our questions transcend research contexts, accumulating knowledge across studies of specific health behaviours, settings, and populations will build a broader understanding of habit change principles and how they may be embedded into interventions. We encourage researchers and practitioners to prioritise these questions, to further theory and evidence around how to create long-lasting health behaviour change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the Paris Colloquium held forty years ago, and which this paper celebrates, the issue of psychosurgery had not been tackled yet. At that time psychosurgery was tainted by the controversial history of lobotomy and leucotomy. Supporters of psychosurgery at the time of the Colloquium were preparing their fourth International Conference, which was held in Madrid the following year. This represented a key characteristic of the collective, institutional and symbolic action of psychosurgery practitioners. At the end of the seventies, their strategy changed as noted below. Furthermore, we focus on the special importance of the results presented and commented on by psychosurgery supporters, including its conception and classification throughout the rhetoric historically involved (its supposed ventriloquism, its persuasive strength). Based on this view, we suggest a critical reflection encompassing old and new psychosurgery, while questioning the value of new rhetorical devices for the assessment and presentation of psychosurgery results after the surge of Deep Brain Stimulation. The European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) celebrated its 25th Anniversary Congress in Milan under the chairmanship of Professor Emilio Bombardieri and the auspices of the Italian Society of Nuclear Medicine. As always, the Congress was a great success: more than 5,530 participants from 88 countries came from Europe and beyond. In spite of limited budgets, industry again made an important contribution: New innovative equipment and tracers demonstrating the latest technology and innovations were presented by 122 companies. This review is a brief summary of the major scientific contributions made in the fields of oncology, multimodality imaging, cardiovascular science, neurology and psychiatry, technological innovation and novel tracers, and in other clinical sciences as well as in radionuclide therapy, which all show promising and great innovations.
