A novel multi-instant gain-scheduling scheme is proposed in order to further improve the state estimation performance of discrete-time Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy systems in this article. Different from those existing methods, the enabled working pattern at each sampling instant can be determined in cycle according to utilization of the updated information of adjacent normalized fuzzy weighting functions in depth, and then the featured time-varying free matrices are introduced for each working pattern, which can remove those existing constraints on traditional free matrices. Consequently, the conservatism can be reduced significantly and it does broaden the range of application for observer-based fuzzy state estimation. Despite the fact that the quantity of the free matrices becomes much bigger than before, it needs to be pointed out that the actual computational complexity only increases by a small amount through depressing the number of cycles. Given that the developed designing process belongs to an offline computation, it is an acceptable tradeoff between the increasement of computational burdens and the reduction of conservatism. This article proposes an enhanced switching stabilization of Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy systems by developing a new fuzzy switching controller. A distinctive feature of the proposed approach is the enhanced ability to utilize the updated information of the normalized fuzzy weighting functions at each sampling point. Compared with those recent results in the literature, two key performance indexes, i.e., reducing the conservatism and alleviating the online computational burden, can be improved together while the off-line computational burden increases as a tradeoff but is still affordable from the point of algorithmic complexity. As a result, the efficiency of fuzzy stabilization is enhanced and thus its scope of application can be enlarged much more than before. This paper addresses the problem of reducing the conservatism for stabilization of discrete-time Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy systems via a new extended representation approach. Different from previous slack variable methods, an advanced slack variable method without limitations is proposed for further making good use of available fuzzy weighting functions. Owing to the introduction of extended representations for homogenous polynomials, those strong limitations in recent literature are relaxed and thus the primary and secondary sequences of all normalized fuzzy weighting functions can be mapped to one augmented multi-indexed matrix for each homogeneous polynomial. Therefore, less conservative stabilization conditions can be provided as a result of these effective measures and thus a part of the online computational cost is transferred to the offline implementation. This work develops the development of observer-based output feedback control design of discrete-time nonlinear systems in the form of Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model. Lately, previous results have been improved in virtue of a two-step method. From a technical point of view, it is not flawless and related problems have not been completely resolved. In this study, more advanced two-steps approach is further developed while the relative sizes among different normalized fuzzy weighting functions are utilized by introducing some additional matrix variables. As a result of the above work, those main defects of the existing method can be redressed and a desired solution in aspect of not only reducing the conservatism but also alleviating the computation complexity is provided for some special cases.
