3D printing of multimaterial objects is an emerging field with promising applications. The layer-by-layer material addition technique used in 3D printing enables incorporation of distinct functionalized materials into the specialized devices. However, very few studies have been performed on the usage of multimaterial 3D printing for printable photonic and wearable devices. Here, we employ vat photopolymerization-based 3D printing to produce multimaterial contact lenses, offering enhanced multiband optical filtration, which can be valuable for tackling ocular conditions such as color blindness. A combination of hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) was used as the base hydrogel for 3D printing. Atto565 and Atto488 dyes were added to the hydrogel for wavelength filtering, each dye suitable for a different type of color blindness. Multimaterial disks and contact lenses, with separate sections containing distinct dyes, were 3D-printed, and their optical properties were studied. The characteristics of multimaterial printing were analyzed, focusing on the formation of a uniform multimaterial interface. In addition, a novel technique was developed for printing multiple dyed materials in complex lateral geometrical patterns, by employing suitable variations in CAD models and the UV curing time. It was observed that the multimaterial printing process does not negatively affect the optical properties of the contact lenses. The printed multimaterial contact lenses offered a combined multi-band color blindness correction due to the two dyes used. The resulting optical spectrum was a close match to the commercially available color blindness correction glasses.

Integration of nanomaterials into hydrogels has emerged as a prominent research tool utilized in applications such as sensing, cancer therapy, and bone tissue engineering. Wearable contact lenses functionalized with nanoparticles have been exploited in therapeutics and targeted therapy. Here, we report the fabrication of gold and silver nanocomposite commercial contact lenses using a breathing-in/breathing-out (BI-BO) method, whereby a hydrated contact lens is shrunk in an aprotic solvent and then allowed to swell in an aqueous solution containing nanoparticles. The morphology and optical properties of the gold and silver nanoparticles were characterized through transmission electron microscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The transmission spectra of nanocomposite contact lenses indicated that the nanoparticles' loading amount within the lens depended primarily on the number of BI-BO cycles. Nanocomposites were stable for a minimum period of 1 month, and no nanoparticle leaching was observed. Wettability and water content analysis of the nanocomposites revealed that the contact lenses retained their intrinsic material properties after the fabrication process. The dispersion of the nanoparticles within the contact lens media was determined through scanning electron microscopy imaging. The nanocomposite lenses can be deployed in color filtering and antibacterial applications. In fact, the silver nanocomposite contact lens showed blue-light blocking capabilities by filtering a harmful high-energy blue-light range (400-450 nm) while transmitting the visible light beyond 470 nm, which facilitates enhanced night vision and color distinction. The ease of fabricating these nanocomposite contact lenses via the BI-BO method could enable the incorporation of nanoparticles with diverse morphologies into contact lenses for various biomedical applications.

Advances in multifunctional materials and technologies have allowed contact lenses to serve as wearable devices for continuous monitoring of physiological parameters and delivering drugs for ocular diseases. Since the tear fluids comprise a library of biomarkers, direct measurement of different parameters such as concentration of glucose, urea, proteins, nitrite, and chloride ions, intraocular pressure (IOP), corneal temperature, and pH can be carried out non-invasively using contact lens sensors. Microfluidic contact lens sensor based colorimetric sensing and liquid control mechanisms enable the wearers to perform self-examinations at home using smartphones. Furthermore, drug-laden contact lenses have emerged as delivery platforms using a low dosage of drugs with extended residence time and increased ocular bioavailability. This review provides an overview of contact lenses for ocular diagnostics and drug delivery applications. The designs, working principles, and sensing mechanisms of sensors and drug delivery systems are reviewed. The potential applications of contact lenses in point-of-care diagnostics and personalized medicine, along with the significance of integrating multiplexed sensing units together with drug delivery systems, have also been discussed.

Color vision deficiency (CVD) is an ocular congenital disorder that affects 8% of males and 0.5% of females. The most prevalent form of color vision deficiency (color blindness) affects protans and deutans and is more commonly known as "red-green color blindness". Since there is no cure for this disorder, CVD patients opt for wearables that aid in enhancing their color perception. The most common wearable used by CVD patients is a form of tinted glass/lens. Those glasses filter out the problematic wavelengths (540-580 nm) for the red-green CVD patients using organic dyes. However, few studies have addressed the fabrication of contact lenses for color vision deficiency, and several problems related to their effectiveness and toxicity were reported. In this study, gold nanoparticles are integrated into contact lens material, thus forming nanocomposite contact lenses targeted for red-green CVD application. Three distinct sets of nanoparticles were characterized and incorporated with the hydrogel material of the lenses (pHEMA), and their resulting optical and material properties were assessed. The transmission spectra of the developed nanocomposite lenses were analogous to those of the commercial CVD wearables, and their water retention and wettability capabilities were superior to those in some of the commercially available contact lenses used for cosmetic/vision correction purposes. Hence, this work demonstrates the potential of gold nanocomposite lenses in CVD management and, more generally, color filtering applications.

Although the manufacturing processes of contact lenses are well established, the use of additive manufacturing for their fabrication opens many new possibilities to explore. The current study demonstrates the fabrication of personalized smart contract lenses utilizing additive manufacturing. The study includes 3-dimensional (3D) modeling of contact lenses with the assistance of a computer aided designing tool based on standard commercial contact lens dimension, followed by the selection of the suitable materials and 3D printing of contact lenses. The 3D printing parameters were optimized to achieve the desired lens geometries, and a post processing treatment was performed to achieve a smooth surface finish. The study also presents functionalized contact lenses with built-in sensing abilities by utilizing microchannels at the contact lens edges. Tinted contact lenses were printed and nanopatterns were textured onto the contact lens surfaces through holographic laser ablation. 3D printed contact lenses have advantages over conventional contact lenses, offering customized ophthalmic devices and the capability to integrate with optical sensors for diagnostics.

In this article, using the integration of paper microfluidics within laser-inscribed commercial contact lenses, we demonstrate the multiplexed detection of clinically relevant analytes including hydrogen ions, proteins, glucose, nitrites and l-ascorbic acid, all sampled directly from model tears. In vitro measurements involved the optimization of colorimetric assays, with readouts collected, stored and analyzed using a bespoke Tears Diagnostics smartphone application prototype. We demonstrate the potential of the device to perform discrete measurements either for medical diagnosis or disease screening in the clinic or at the point-of-care (PoC), with future applications including monitoring of ocular infections, uveitis, diabetes, keratopathies and assessing oxidative stress.

Low-cost, robust, and reusable continuous glucose monitoring systems that can provide quantitative measurements at point-of-care settings is an unmet medical need. Optical glucose sensors require complex and time-consuming fabrication processes, and their readouts are not practical for quantitative analyses. Here, a wearable contact lens optical sensor was created for the continuous quantification of glucose at physiological conditions, simplifying the fabrication process and facilitating smartphone readouts. A photonic microstructure having a periodicity of 1.6 μm was printed on a glucose-selective hydrogel film functionalized with phenylboronic acid. Upon binding with glucose, the microstructure volume swelled, which modulated the periodicity constant. The resulting change in the Bragg diffraction modulated the space between zero- and first-order spots. A correlation was established between the periodicity constant and glucose concentration within 0-50 mM. The sensitivity of the sensor was 12 nm mM -1 , and the saturation response time was less than 30 min. The sensor was integrated with commercial contact lenses and utilized for continuous glucose monitoring using smartphone camera readouts. The reflected power of the first-order diffraction was measured via a smartphone application and correlated to the glucose concentrations. A short response time of 3 s and a saturation time of 4 min was achieved in the continuous monitoring mode. Glucose-sensitive photonic microstructures may have applications in point-of-care continuous monitoring devices and diagnostics at home settings.

Contact lenses are ubiquitous biomedical devices used for vision correction and cosmetic purposes. Their application as quantitative analytical devices is highly promising for point-of-care diagnostics. However, it is a challenge to integrate nanoscale features into commercial contact lenses for application in low-cost biosensors. A neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser (1064 nm, 3 ns pulse, 240 mJ) in holographic interference patterning mode was utilized to produce optical nanostructures over the surface of a hydrogel contact lens. One-dimensional (925 nm) and two-dimensional (925 nm × 925 nm) nanostructures were produced on contact lenses and analyzed by spectroscopy and angle-resolve measurements. The holographic properties of these nanostructures were tested in ambient moisture, fully hydrated, and artificial tear conditions. The measurements showed a rapid tuning of optical diffraction from these nanostructures from 41 to 48°. The nanostructures were patterned near the edges of the contact lens to avoid any interference and obstruction to the human vision. The formation of 2D nanostructures on lenses increased the diffraction efficiency by more than 10%. The versatility of the holographic laser ablation method was demonstrated by producing four different 2D nanopattern geometries on contact lenses. Hydrophobicity of the contact lens was characterized by contact angle measurements, which increased from 59.0° at pristine condition to 62.5° at post-nanofabrication. The holographic nanostructures on the contact lens were used to sense the concentration of Na + ions. Artificial tear solution was used to simulate the conditions in dry eye syndrome, and nanostructures on the contact lenses were used to detect the electrolyte concentration changes (±47 mmol L -1 ). Nanopatterns on a contact lens may be used to sense other ocular diseases in early stages at point-of-care settings.

Contact lens is a ubiquitous technology used for vision correction and cosmetics. Sensing in contact lenses has emerged as a potential platform for minimally invasive point-of-care diagnostics. Here, a microlithography method is developed to fabricate microconcavities and microchannels in a hydrogel-based contact lens via a combination of laser patterning and embedded templating. Optical microlithography parameters influencing the formation of microconcavities including ablation power (4.3 W) and beam speed (50 mm s -1 ) are optimized to control the microconcavity depth (100 µm) and diameter (1.5 mm). The fiber templating method allows the production of microchannels having a diameter range of 100-150 µm. Leak-proof microchannel and microconcavity connections in contact lenses are validated through flow testing of artificial tear containing fluorescent microbeads (Ø = 1-2 µm). The microconcavities of contact lenses are functionalized with multiplexed fluorophores (2 µL) to demonstrate optical excitation and emission capability within the visible spectrum. Contact lenses are widely used for vision correction and cosmetic purposes. Smart contact lenses offer further opportunities as functionalized non-invasive devices capable of simultaneous vision correction, real-time health monitoring and patient specific drug delivery. Herein, a low-cost vat photopolymerization technique is developed for directly 3D printing functionalized structures on commercially available contact lenses. The process enables controlled deposition of functionalized hydrogels, in customizable patterns, on the commercial contact lens surface with negligible optical losses. Multi-functional contact lenses can also be 3D printed with multiple materials deposited at different regions of the contact lens. Herein, the functionalities of colour blindness correction and real-time UV monitoring are demonstrated, by employing three suitable dyes incorporated into 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) hydrogel structures printed on contact lenses. Ocular diseases can cause vision problems or even blindness if they are not detected early. Some ocular diseases generate irregular physical changes in the eye; therefore, reliable diagnostic technology for continuous monitoring of the eye is an unmet clinical need. In this study, a pulsed laser (Nd:YAG) was used to create optical nanostructures on a hydrogel-based commercial contact lens. Simulations were used to determine the spacing of the nanostructures, which were then produced and tested on the lens in ambient humidity and fully hydrated environments. The nanostructures produced a 4° diffraction angle difference in response to the environmental changes. Vision obstruction was considered while designing the nanostructure features on the lens. The curved nanostructures exhibited a series of visible rainbow colors with an average range of 8° under normal room light. A spherical surface was also used to simulate the human eye, and application of a force (curvature change) caused the nanostructure spacing to change, influencing the visible color of the contact lenses. A smartphone camera application was used to measure the progress of ocular diseases by analyzing the RGB color values of the visible color. The nanostructures were also responsive to K+ ion variations in artificial tear fluids, with a 12 mmol L−1 sensitivity, which may allow the detection of ocular ionic strength changes. Constant exposure to blue light emanating from screens, lamps, digital devices, or other artificial sources at night can suppress melatonin secretion, potentially compromising both sleep quality and overall health. Daytime exposure to elevated levels of blue light can also lead to permanent damage to the eyes. Here, we have developed blue light protective plasmonic contact lenses (PCLs) to mitigate blue light exposure. Crafted from poly-(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) and infused with silver nanoparticles, these contact lenses serve as a protective barrier to filter blue light. Leveraging the plasmonic properties of silver nanoparticles, the lenses effectively filtered out the undesirable blue light (400–510 nm), demonstrating substantial protection (22–71%) while maintaining high transparency (80–96%) for the desirable light (511–780 nm). The maximum protection level reaches a peak of 79% at 455 nm, aligned with the emission peak for the blue light sourced from LEDs in consumer displays. The presence of silver nanoparticles was found to have an insignificant impact on the water content of the developed contact lenses. The lenses maintained high water retention levels within the range of 50–70 wt %, comparable to commercial contact lenses. The optical performance of the developed lenses remains unaffected in both artificial tears and contact lens storage solution over a month with no detected leakage of the nanoparticles. Additionally, the MTT assay confirmed that the lenses were biocompatible and noncytotoxic, maintaining cell viability at over 85% after 24 h of incubation. These lenses could be a potential solution to protect against the most intense wavelengths emitted by consumer displays and offer a remedy to counteract the deleterious effects of prolonged blue light exposure. Biogenic gold nanoparticles (BAu NPs) synthesized using olive leaf extract were used as an additive in commercial contact lenses (BAu lens). Their antibacterial and color blindness‐correcting properties were examined. To compare the properties, gold nanocomposite contact lenses were also synthesized using the well‐known Turkevich method (TAu lens). The breath‐ in/breath‐out method was used to load the Au NPs onto commercial contact lenses. The bio‐gold nanoparticles showed good dispersion and stability within the lens hydrogel matrix. Nanoparticle loading had a negligible effect on the contact lenses' wettability and swelling properties. BAu lens filtered around 55% of visible light at 530 nm, a problematic wavelength for color blind patients. The optical filtering results were comparable with Pilestone commercial color blind correction glasses. BAu lenses also showed superior resistance against the attack of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria as compared to Tau lenses. As scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging showed, the BAu lenses showed a complete lack of surface attachment toward the bacterial colonies. This research provides a cost‐effective and scalable method of producing multi‐functional nanocomposite contact lenses with antibacterial and color blind correction properties. Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) are useful materials that may be used in a variety of applications such as colorblindness management, drug delivery, and bacteria reduction. When incorporated with optical lenses, GNPs cause an absorption dip in the transmission spectra of the lenses. Out of the aforementioned medical applications, colorblindness management is the most benefited from such spectra absorption as it can potentially block problematic wavelengths that patients suffer from and hence manage their colorblindness, where color vision deficiency (CVD), also known as colorblindness, is a congenital ocular disorder that has no current cure, and patients suffering from it rely on wearable aids that enhance their color perception by filtering out the certain wavelengths. Herein, customized gold nanocomposite contact lenses are fabricated via additive manufacturing to filter selective transmission wavelengths in the range of 540 and 560 nm. To allow selective filtering, seed‐mediated synthesis of GNPs through nine growth steps is utilized to vary the GNPs' size and plasmonic filtering properties. Thereafter, three contact lenses are fabricated with different GNPs concentrations and particle sizes. In the results of the study, it is indicated that the fabricated lenses can block certain wavelengths selectively while acquiring properties similar to commercially available eyewear. Colour vision disorders, pose challenges in perceiving and distinguishing specific colours. To address these challenges, technologies such as colour-filtering glasses and contact lenses have been developed. However, customisation of eyewear for individual patients remains a challenge. This research aims to design multifunctional contact lenses combining colour filtering and pH sensing capabilities for personalised colour vision correction. A pH-responsive, Neutral red dye-doped hydrogel was developed and optimised for the vat photo polymerization-based 3D printing process. A novel in-house multimaterial 3D printing technique was employed for printing lenses exhibiting both colour filtering and pH sensing capabilities. 3D printed samples contained outer radial rings, made from porous and pH-responsive polymer. The optically tunable dye-doped resin was also applied to the central part of the lenses to achieve customised wavelength blockage. Prominence of color perception in our day‐to‐day routine is unequivocally pronounced, yet visual ramifications due to color vision deficiency (CVD) or color blindness impede carriers of this disorder from functioning normally. To circumvent this deficiency, patients opt for tinted glasses/contact lenses to complement their color distinction capabilities. Red‐green color blindness, the most prevalent form of CVD, can be alleviated using such glasses/lenses that filter out problematic wavelengths (540–580 nm). Nonetheless, nearly all contact lenses established by companies and developed by researchers are tinted throughout their entire surface, causing patients discomfort and needless attention as people can easily note their deficiency. Ideally, the tint within the lens should only cover the eye's pupil as it is responsible for perceiving light. Hence herein, CVD contact lenses are fabricated by solely tinting the midportion of commercial lenses utilizing two additively manufactured molds with 4 and 8 mm‐diameter holes to emulate the humans' average pupil size. The tinted lenses filter light effectively at 530–590 nm with their transmission dip being at 558 nm. The contact lenses show excellent wettability and water retention capabilities along with demonstrating superior wavelength‐filtering properties to most of the commercial and research‐based CVD wearables. Color blindness or color vision deficiency (CVD) is a congenital ocular deficiency that hampers patients' daily life activities. CVD patients rely mostly on using wearable visual aids that enhance color distinction by blocking problematic wavelengths of light. Contributing to that, this study examines the fabrication of 3D‐printed colored contact lens for color blindness management. A vat photopolymerization based 3D printing technology is utilized to fabricate the contact lenses for CVD patients. An in‐house prepared resin is mixed with a low‐cost colored ink to attain the desired blocking range (520–580 nm). The fabricated lens blocks more than 50% of light at the problematic wavelengths, along with exhibiting minimal leakage when stored and examined in water and contact lens storage solution. Average contact angle and water content values are 48° and 56%, respectively. Mechanical properties demonstrate the physical adequacy of the contact lens. The CVD filtering efficacy of the tinted contact lens and its potential as a CVD wearable is evaluated by comparing its optical performance with that of commercial products. Finally, cytotoxicity analysis of the lens to dermal fibroblast cells reveals the biocompatibility of the lens as the cell viability remains greater than 75% after 24 h. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Glaucoma is a major cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. The most acknowledged biomarker to diagnose and monitor glaucoma progression is intraocular pressure (IOP). Gold standard techniques for IOP monitoring are invasive, uncomfortable, and require visiting a clinic. In addition, most methods only provide a single snapshot on widely varying parameters. On the other hand, contact lenses have attracted particular interest to be used as continuous monitoring platforms to incorporate sensors, drugs, and more. Here, commercial contact lenses were laser-processed to be capable of detecting IOP variations in the physiological range. Three ring-couples with interspaces of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm were engraved on three soft contact lenses separately by using a carbon dioxide laser. The IOP/pressure variations induced repeatable changes in the ring-couple interspace which acted as a smartphone-readable pressure sensor. Color vision deficiency (CVD) is a common ocular disorder that hampers patients' color distinction capabilities, causing difficulties in their daily life routine. Till date, a CVD cure is not developed, and treatment courses, such as gene therapy, are yet to be applied on humans. Hence, patients opt for wearable visual aids such as tinted glasses/contact lenses, which achieve the latter by filtering out problematic wavelengths for blue–yellow (440–500 nm) and red–green (540–580 nm) CVD patients, thus, enabling them to distinguish between the colors. Herein, the development of 3D printed glasses for color blindness management is reported. A commercially available highly transparent resin (>95%) is utilized, and two wavelength filtering dyes, with absorption ranges of 550–580 and 440–510 nm, respectively, are mixed with the resin. The tinted glasses are successfully 3D printed using Masked SLA 3D printer; dyes incorporated within the glasses exhibit high stability over 1‐week period. The manufactured glasses successfully block more than 50% of the undesired wavelengths along with showing high transparency (>85%) to the remaining portion of the visible light spectrum. When using the developed glasses, volunteers show substantial improvements in Ishihara test scores, which signify the potential of these glasses as CVD wearables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Commercially available hydrogel-based soft contact lenses are extensively used for cosmetic or vision correction purposes. Such lenses are typically manufactured from tailored hydrogel composites, with high water contents for comfort, softness and oxygen permeability. Our research group has achieved the fabrication of nanostructures on these hydrogels-based soft commercial contact lenses. This challenging task of producing nanostructures on a soft, fragile, hydrated, and curved surface of a contact lens was achieved through the usage of holographic laser ablation. Self-interference of a pulsed nanosecond laser was used to selectively ablate the absorbing media placed on the contact lenses surface. These nanostructures act as optical transducers and they can be used for sensing various parameters on the ocular surfaces, paving the way forward for smart contact lenses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Contact lenses can be functionalized to offer advanced capabilities transcending their primary applications in vision correction and cosmetics. Herein, 40 and 60 nm spherical silver nanoparticles (SNPs) are integrated within poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) contact lenses toward fabrication of SNP‐loaded contact lenses with excellent optical and material properties as wearables for blue‐yellow color vision deficiency (CVD) patients. The morphology and optical properties of the SNPs are characterized prepolymerization using the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and an optical spectrophotometer. Then, the transmission spectra of the SNP‐loaded contact lenses at different concentrations along with the wettability and water content are measured, to demonstrate the effect of NPs' addition on the lenses' optical and material characteristics. Results indicate that the transmission spectra of SNP‐loaded contact lenses, with optimum concentrations, filter out problematic wavelengths of visible light (485–495 nm), which will facilitate better color distinction for blue‐yellow CVD patients. The contact lenses' optical properties are analogous to the commercial colorblind glasses, indicating their effectiveness as color filtering wearables. Finally, the cytobiocompatability analysis of the contact lenses to RAW 264.7 culture of cells shows that they are biocompatible, and the cell viability remains higher than 75% after 24 h in contact with the lenses. Additive manufacturing (3D printing) has the ability to architect structures at microscale, giving rise to the development of functional contact lenses (CLs) with inbuilt sensing capabilities. 3D printing technology enables fabrication of CLs without surface geometry restrictions. Spherical, nonspherical, symmetric, and asymmetric lenses can be manufactured in an integrated production process. Advantages of 3D printing over conventional techniques include fast and easy production, one‐step manufacturing, and no post processing such as grinding or polishing. In addition, and most significantly, 3D printing can create chambers within the wall of the lenses by taking the advantage of computer‐aided modeling and layer‐by‐layer deposition of the materials. These inbuilt chambers can be used for loading drugs and sensing elements. The computer‐aided design modeling can allow for manufacturing of patient‐specific CLs. This article focuses on the 3D‐printing approaches and the challenges faced in fabricating CLs. 3D‐printing technology as a technique for manufacturing of CLs is discussed, in addition to the manufacturing challenges and the possible solutions to overcome the obstacles. Color blindness or color vision deficiency (CVD) affects around 4.5% of the population in Europe. There have been several attempts to assist color‐blind individuals using color filter glasses. Here, contact lenses are developed to assist individuals suffering from color blindness. Two dyes (Atto 488 and 565) that provide the desired absorption wavelength ranges are selected to be immobilized in soft contact lenses. The chosen dyes have absorption bands in wavelength ranges of 480–500 and 550–580 nm. Both dyes are individually immobilized in contact lenses, and over 95% of the light in the undesired ranges are blocked. The dyes do not diffuse out from lenses in artificial tears and contact lens storage solution. Performances of the developed contact lenses are compared to commercial color‐blind glasses. The contact lenses are tested in color vision deficient patients using Ishihara test. Participants indicate enhancement in the visibility of the colors and their contrast in a color rich environment. The proposed contact lenses show enhanced results as compared to commercial color‐blind glasses in indoors and achieved similar outcomes outdoors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Color vision deficiency (CVD) or color blindness is an ocular disorder that hinders the patients from distinguishing shades of certain colors. Color blind patients are often not considered for critical occupations (e.g., military, police) and cannot differentiate colors in public places or media (i.e., watching TV). The most common form of color blindness is red‐green, which is a result of either a missing or defective red or green photoreceptor cone. Since no cure for this disorder exists, sufferers opt for methods to enhance their color perception. The products and methods that have been developed to aid CVD patients are discussed. These technologies include contemporary work on gene therapy, tinted glasses, lenses, optoelectronic glasses, and advanced features developed on smartphones and computers. The authors report on the laser‐induced modification of surface properties of contact lenses. Selective areas of the surface of commercial silicon‐hydrogel contact lenses are patterned in array formats using different powers of the CO2 laser. 1D arrays of different groove densities, channels, and 2D intersecting architecture are fabricated. Contact angle measurements are carried out to measure the surface hydrophilicity, and extent of hydration is linked with the surface profile properties and the space gap between the fabricated patterns, which are controlled by the beam exposure time, beam power, and scan speed. Laser treatment of contact lenses results in improved hydration proportional to the density of laser ablated segments on the surface. The hydration time of water droplets on different lens surfaces is also recorded – all 2D patterned lenses show faster hydration as water quickly diffused into the bulk of the lens due to the extended interfacial area between the contact lens and the water droplet as a consequence of larger areal modification in 2D as compared with 1D patterns. The best wettability properties are obtained with 0.3 mm space gap, 9 W power, and 200 mm s−1 scan speed. Optical microscopy is used to image the 3D surface profiles of the modified lenses and the depth of the patterns and is correlated with the experimental observations. The maximum depth of 40 µm is observed with 0.3 mm space gap, 9 W, and 200 mm s−1 scan speed. Optical transmittance of broadband white light is measured to assess the surface treatment effects on the contact lenses. A large exposure and dense patterning of contact lens result in decreased (down to a minimum of 45%) in the light transmittance, which dictates the practical usability of such patterning. Surface treatment of contact lenses can be utilized to deposit stable conducting connection for on‐lens‐LEDs, displays, and communication antennas as well as for stabilizing biosensing materials and drug dispensing applications.
