We present palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic results from five cores collected in the basin of the Adriatic Sea. Four cores (PRAD2-4; KS02-246; CSS00-23 and CSS00-07) were collected along a shore-parallel transect whereas the fifth core (AMC99-01) was retrieved in the central Adriatic in 250 m water depth, on the floor of the Meso-Adriatic Depression. After alternating field demagnetization, the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) directions show a characteristic and primary magnetization of the sediments that is representative of secular variation of the geomagnetic field. By combining 14C dating and the ages of magnetic inclination features, it has been possible to establish an age-depth model for all of the cores. Precise identification of the secular variation features provides a refined chronology that allows us to quantify short-term changes in sediment flux from the Adriatic catchment as well as changes in sediment routing within the basin. Rock magnetic parameters indicate a homogeneous magnetic mineralogy dominated by fine-grained magnetite. Variations in both concentration and grain-size related magnetic parameters reflect changes in sediment supply between glacial and interglacial stages, as well as changes in environmental conditions. Selective dissolution of magnetic grains is associated with the formation of sapropel S1 during the first part of the Holocene, although the duration of the anoxic interval varies between cores. A significant modification in sediment supply characterizes the late-Holocene deposits with a marked increase in sedimentation rate occurring during the last few centuries. During the late Pleistocene, sea level variations related to glacio-eustatic cycles induced the deposition of four regressive sequences on the western continental shelf of the Adriatic basin. The four sequences are bounded by erosion surfaces that formed during sea level fall, sub-aerial exposure of the shelf and subsequent sea level rise and erosional reworking. The sequences and the erosion surfaces at their top (numbered 1–4 top-down) are correlated on distances in the order of 300 km, in the central and south Adriatic. Core control on deposits of the most recent depositional sequence (sequence 1) suggests that each sequence records a fourth-order (ca. 100–120 kyr) cyclicity of sea level change. Within each depositional sequence, progradational units representing highstand to forced regression are dominant, whereas transgressive deposits are absent or reduced in both thickness and lateral extent. Sequences are thus referred to as regressive sequences. Deposition during sea level fall occurred on an overall subsiding shelf, through the dispersal of fine-grained sediment supplied from the adjacent Alpine and Apennine chains. This resulted in stacked forced-regression deposits thick enough to survive complete removal during subsequent phases of sub-aerial and marine erosion. Erosion and/or non-deposition were enhanced only where tectonic uplift and morphological highs further reduced the remaining accommodation space, resulting in local thickness reduction or in the non-preservation of the regressive sequences. At larger scale, thickness variability and depocenter distribution north and south of the Gargano Promontory (an uplifted block bisecting the Adriatic foreland) reflect differential deposition and preservation of regressive deposits, as a function of contrasting tectonic setting and resulting physiography of the shelf and upper slope. Abstract: The first part of this paper presents a review of the problems that constrain the reliability of radiocarbon-based age models with particular focus on those used to underpin marine records. The reasons why radiocarbon data-sets need to be much more comprehensive than has been the norm hitherto, and why age models should be based on calibrated data only, are outlined. The complexity of the probability structure of calibrated radiocarbon data and the advantages of a Bayesian statistical approach for constructing calibrated age models are illustrated. The second part of the paper tests the potential for reducing the uncertainties that constrain radiocarbon-based age models using tephrostratigraphy. Fine (distal) ash layers of Holocene age preserved in Adriatic prodelta sediments are analysed geochemically and compared to tephras preserved in the Lago Grande di Monticchio site in southern Italy. The Monticchio tephras have been dated both by radiocarbon and varve chronology. The importance of basing such comparisons on standardised geochemical and robust statistical procedures is stressed. In this instance, both the Adriatic and Monticchio geochemical measurements are based on wavelength dispersive spectrometry, while discriminant function analysis is employed for statistical comparisons. Using this approach, the ages of some of the Adriatic marine ash layers could be estimated in Monticchio varve years, circumventing some of the uncertainty of radiocarbon-based age models introduced by marine reservoir effects. Fine (distal) ash layers are more widespread and better preserved in Mediterranean marine sequences than realised hitherto and may offer much wider potential for refining the dating and correlation of Mediterranean marine sequences as well as marine-land correlations. Abstract Dense shelf waters have been recognised as a key factor in transporting sediment and organic matter across continental slopes; however, the effect of their circulation on continental shelves is still overlooked. The Adriatic Sea is one of the areas in the Mediterranean where dense shelf water forms and flows as a bottom-hugging gravity current along the continental margin. A fraction of this dense water passes beyond the shelf break and flows downslope through cascading, while a large (lighter and faster) portion remains on the shelf, with a principal vein flowing between 80 and 120 m water depth. This paper presents the 3D shape, internal architecture and sediment facies of a variety of large-scale sedimentary features detected on the continental shelf and at the shelf edge, between 50 and 300 m water depth. These features include giant comet marks, large flute-shaped scours, muddy sediment waves, very large dunes with superimposed bedforms, active and relict sand ridges and shelf edge contourites. Both erosional and depositional features show an overall internal geometry and orientation consistent with water masses flowing southward, and are located where flows become accelerated by topographic constraints and deviated by the curvature of the shelf edge. In this study, the morphology and seismic stratigraphic structure of large-scale bedforms are investigated in an effort to place constraints on bedform evolution and preservation, especially as predictive tools for sand resource management, and to bring new evidence of the interaction between unidirectional hydrodynamic processes and seafloor dynamics on the shelf. Highlights • An extensive geophysical and coring survey revealed large-scale bedforms on the southern microtidal Adriatic shelf. • Bedforms formed in marine conditions, their age of deposition was inferred through radiocarbon dating and seismostratigraphy. • Sedimentary features, erosional and depositional, have orientations compatible with unidirectional flows. • Bottom currents, including shelf dense waters, are accelerated by bathymetric highs and shelf edge curvature. • Bedforms are palimpsest or relict depending on their location in respect to the unidirectional flow. Abstract: The Barcelona continental shelf is part of a 6–20 km wide canyon-bounded shelf located off the city of Barcelona (NE Spain). This study integrates newly acquired high-resolution single channel seismic reflection profiles and available lithological information of the Barcelona shelf to describe its late Quaternary architecture and the role of global glacio-eustatic fluctuations and local factors in its development. Four major sequence boundaries are identified throughout the seismic dataset. They are tentatively correlated with the four last 4th order (100–120 ka) high-amplitude late Quaternary glacio-eustatic lowstands. Most of the stratigraphic record is formed by falling stage systems tracts with forced-regressive deposits, which confers a general progradational vertical stacking pattern. Transgressive systems tracts are represented by continuous units confined directly off river sources and on previously eroded surfaces. Stillstand deposits are difficult to recognize in the available dataset. The uppermost seismic unit corresponds to the Holocene shore-parallel Besos and Llobregat joint prodelta affected by the prevailing south-westward circulation. The general architecture of the late Quaternary Barcelona shelf deposits is determined by global glacio-eustatic cycles. However, the lateral variability of the seismic units depends largely on local factors such as (i) the position of sediment sources (essentially the Llobregat River); (ii) differential subsidence and, especially, sediment compaction; (iii) erosive processes such as canyon incision, mass wasting or wave base dynamics; and (iv) underlying geomorphic restrictions. Abstract: In this paper, we discuss what controls the occurrences of shallow gas off the Western Adriatic coast. This region of the Western Adriatic, including the Po delta and the late-Holocene mud wedge, was sampled with the R/V Seward Johnson II within the framework of the EuroSTRATAFORM project. As a part of the program, we were evaluating the causes of anomalous sub-surface and seafloor features, and specifically, quantifying shallow gas and identifying its impact on geophysical properties. The highest gas concentration off the Po delta region yielded 4.1×104 ppm, where as offshore Tronto River, the highest methane value was 7.9×104 ppm. Headspace gas analyses match well with acoustic anomalies along the Western Adriatic coast. Shallow biogenic gas off the Po delta (NW Adriatic) is spatially correlated with organic matter deposition driven by rapid and thick flood deposition. In contrast to the Po Delta, where sub-surface gas is associated with the flood deposition of organic matter, shallow gas along the Central Adriatic occurs deeper in cores, and appears to be related to methanogenesis of organic matter present in deeper deposits. Abstract: Holocene and slightly pre-Holocene submarine landslide are found both in high-latitude glacial-dominated margins and in lower latitude, river-dominated margins. This paper constitutes a major assessment on some of the best-studied submarine instabilities in the world. We review and update from original data and literature reports the current state of knowledge of Storegga, Traenadjupet and Finneidfjord slides from the mid-Norwegian margin, Afen Slide from the Faeroe-Shetland Channel, BIG''95 Slide and Central Adriatic Deformation Belt (CADEB) from continental slope and inner continental shelf settings off the Ebro and Po rivers in the Mediterranean Sea, Canary Slide west of the westernmost, youngest Canary Islands and Gebra Slide off the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula in the southern hemisphere, i.e. those studied in the Continental Slope Stability (COSTA) project. The investigated slides range in size from the gigantic 90,000 km2 and almost 3000 km3 Storegga Slide to the tiny 1 km2 and 0.001 km3 Finneidfjord Slide. Not only do individual submarine landslides rarely involve processes precisely fitting with pre-established categories, mostly based on subaerial research, but also they display complex mechanical behaviors within the elastic and plastic fields. Individual events can involve simultaneous or successive vertical to translational movements including block detachment, block gliding, debris flow, mud flow and turbidity currents. The need for an in-depth revision of the classification criteria, and eventually for a new classification system, based on the new imaging capabilities provided by modern techniques, is more than obvious. We suggest a new system, which, for the moment, is restricted to debris flows and debris avalanches. Volume calculation methods are critically reviewed and the relations between some key geomorphic parameters are established for the selected slides. The assumed volume missing from scar areas does not necessarily match the actual volume of sediment remobilised by an individual event since in situ sediment can be remoulded and eventually incorporated during the slide downslope journey. CADEB, a shore-parallel prodelta detached from its source, is the exception to the good correlation found between across slope width and alongslope length with slide area. Height drop measured from the headwall upper rim to its foot correlates with the debris deposit maximum thickness unless the slide moves into restricted areas, which prevent farther forward expansion of the deposit, such as Gebra and BIG''95. In such cases, “over-thickened” deposits are found. A particularly loose and fluid behavior can be deduced for slides showing an “over-thinned” character, such as the Canary Slide that traveled 600 km. Scar areas and slip planes have been investigated with particular emphasis. Although slide headwalls might present locally steep gradients (up to 23° for Storegga Slide), the slope gradients of both the failed segment margins and the main slip planes are very low (max. 2° and usually around 1° and less). An exception is the Finneidfjord Slide (20°–<5°) that occurred in 1996 because of a combination of climatic and anthropogenic factors leading to excess pore pressure and failure. Mechanically distinct, low permeable clayey “weak layers” often correspond to slip planes beyond the slide headwall. Since not only formation of these “weak layers” but also sedimentation rates are climatically controlled, we can state that slide pre-conditioning is climatically driven too. Run-out distances reflect the degree of disintegration of the failed mass of sediment, the total volume of initially failed material and transport mechanisms, including hydroplanning. Commonly, specific run-outs could be attributed to distinct elements, such as cohesive blocks and looser matrix, as nicely illustrated by the BIG''95 Slide. Total run-outs usually correspond to matrix run-outs since the coarser elements tend to rest at shorter distances. Outrunner blocks are, finally, a very common feature proving the ability of those elements to glide over long distances with independence of the rest of the failed mass. In addition to pre-conditioning factors related to geological setting and sedimentation conditions, a final trigger is required for submarine landslides to take place, which is most often assumed to be an earthquake. In high latitude margins, earthquake magnitude intensification because of post-glacial isostatic rebound has likely played a major role in triggering landslides. Although it cannot be totally ruled out, there is little proof, at least amongst the COSTA slides, that gas hydrate destabilisation or other processes linked to the presence of shallow gas have acted as final triggers.
