Satellite‐to‐ground quantum communication constitutes the cornerstone of the global quantum network, heralding the advent of the future of quantum information. Continuous‐variable quantum key distribution is a strong candidate for the space‐ground quantum communication due to its simplicity, stability, and ease of implementation, especially for the robustness of space background light noise. Recently, the discrete‐modulated continuous‐variable protocol has garnered increased attention, owing to its lower implementation requirements, acceptable security key rate, and pronounced compatibility with extant infrastructures. An amplitude modulator plays an essential role in the implementation of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD), whereas it may bring about a potential security loophole in the practical system. The high-frequency modulation of the actual transmitter usually results in the high rate of the system. However, an imperfect amplitude modulator (AM) can give birth to a potential information leakage from the modulation of the transmitter. To reveal a potential security loophole from the high-frequency AM embedded in the transmitter, we demonstrate an influence on the practical security of the system in terms of the secret key rate and maximal transmission distance. The results indicate the risk of this security loophole in the imperfect AM-embedded transmitter. Fortunately, the legal participants can trace back the potential information leakage that has been produced from the imperfect transmitter at high frequencies, which can be used for defeating the leakage attack in CVQKD. We find the limitations of the imperfect AM-embedded transmitter of the high-frequency quantum system, and hence, we have to trade off the practical security and the modulation frequency of the AM-embedded transmitter while considering its implementation in a practical environment. Quantum key distribution (QKD) is one quantum technology that can provide secure encryption keys for data transmission. The secret key rate (SKR) is a core performance indicator in QKD, which directly determines the transmission rate of enciphered data. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate a high-key-rate Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD) using telecom optical components. The framework of CV-QKD over these components is constructed. Specifically, the high-rate low-noise Gaussian modulation of coherent states is realized by a classical optical IQ modulator. High-baud low-intensity quantum signals are received by an integrated coherent receiver under the shot-noise limit. A series of digital signal processing algorithms are proposed to achieve accurate signal recovery and key distillation. The system can yield a high asymptotic SKR of 10.37 Mbps within 20 km standard telecom fiber, and the secure distance can exceed 100 km. This result confirms the feasibility of CV-QKD with state-of-the-art performance using telecom optical components. Discrete-variable (DV) and continuous-variable (CV) schemes constitute the two major families of quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols. Unfortunately, since the setup elements required by these schemes are quite different, making a fair comparison of their potential performance in particular applications is often troublesome, limiting the experimenters' capability to choose an optimal solution. In this work we perform a general comparison of the major entanglement-based DV and CV QKD protocols in terms of their resistance to the channel noise, with the otherwise perfect setup, showing the definite superiority of the DV family. We analytically derive fundamental bounds on the tolerable channel noise and attenuation for entanglement-based CV QKD protocols. We also investigate the influence of DV QKD setup imperfections on the obtained results in order to determine benchmarks for the parameters of realistic photon sources and detectors, allowing the realistic DV protocols to outperform even the ideal CV QKD analogs. Quantum key distribution (QKD) can provide information-theoretically secure keys for two parties of legitimate communication, and information reconciliation, as an indispensable component of QKD systems, can correct errors present in raw keys based on error-correcting codes. In this paper, we first describe the basic knowledge of information reconciliation and its impact on continuous variable QKD. Then we introduce the information schemes and the corresponding error correction codes employed. Next, we introduce the rate-compatible codes, the hardware acceleration of the reconciliation algorithm, the research progress of information reconciliation, and its application in continuous variable QKD. Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) is a promising protocol that can be easily integrated with classical optical communication systems. However, in the case of quantum-classical co-transmissions, such as dense wavelength division multiplexing with classical channels and time division multiplexing with large-power classical signal, a quantum signal is more susceptible to crosstalk caused by a classical signal, leading to signal distortion and key distribution performance reduction. To address this issue, we propose a noise-suppression scheme based on carrier frequency switching (CFS) that can effectively mitigate the influence of large-power random noise on the weak coherent state. In this noise-suppression scheme, a minimum-value window of the channel's noise power spectrum is searched for and the transmission signal frequency spectrum shifts to the corresponding frequency to avoid large-power channel noise. A digital filter is also utilized to filter out most of the channel noise. Simulation results show that compared to the traditional fixed carrier frequency scheme, the proposed noise-suppression scheme can reduce the excess noise to 1.8 % , and the secret key rate can be increased by 1.43 to 2.86 times at different distances. This noise-suppression scheme is expected to be applied in scenarios like quantum–classical co-transmission and multi-QKD co-transmission to provide noise-suppression solutions. In this paper, a continuous-variable quantum digital signature (CV-QDS) protocol based on quantum teleportation (QT) is proposed, and the corresponding theoretical analysis method is established. Unlike previous schemes, we use squeezed states to carry key and secret information about the teleported states that are transmitted through classical and entangled channels without infinite squeezing. In addition, for multibit information signatures, we propose to use the mean and modulation variance of the teleported quantum state to distinguish signatures, and each of which is marked and ordered. In particular, we derive the fidelity that the protocol can achieve, displaying the effectiveness of the method at different compression levels. Security analysis demonstrates that the protocol possesses unforgeability, non-repudiation and robustness, which is suitable for signing one-bit and multibit messages.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) offers an approach to achieve a potential high secret key rate (SKR) in metropolitan areas. There are several challenges in developing a practical CV-QKD system from the laboratory to the real world. One of the most significant points is that it is really hard to adapt different practical optical fiber conditions for CV-QKD systems with unified hardware. Thus, how to improve the performance of practical CV-QKD systems in the field without modification of the hardware is very important. Here, a systematic optimization method, combining the modulation variance and error correction matrix optimization, is proposed to improve the performance of a practical CV-QKD system with a restricted capacity of postprocessing. The effect of restricted postprocessing capacity on the SKR is modeled as a nonlinear programming problem with modulation variance as an optimization parameter, and the selection of an optimal error correction matrix is studied under the same scheme. The results show that the SKR of a CV-QKD system can be improved by 24% and 200% compared with previous frequently used optimization methods theoretically with a transmission distance of 50 km. Furthermore, the experimental results verify the feasibility and robustness of the proposed method, where the achieved optimal SKR achieved practically deviates < 1.6% from the theoretical optimal value. For this paper, we considered a neural network approach to predicting the secret key rate of CVQKD with discrete modulation (DM) through an underwater channel. A long-short-term-memory-(LSTM)-based neural network (NN) model was employed, in order to demonstrate performance improvement when taking into account the secret key rate. The numerical simulations showed that the lower bound of the secret key rate could be achieved for a finite-size analysis, where the LSTM-based neural network (NN) was much better than that of the backward-propagation-(BP)-based neural network (NN). This approach helped to realize the fast derivation of the secret key rate of CVQKD through an underwater channel, indicating that it can be used for improving performance in practical quantum communications. The deterioration of precision caused by quantum decoherence in dissipative environments is a longstanding problem in the development of quantum metrology. Therefore, it is significant to effectively analyze the evolution of quantum systems under dissipative environments and quantitatively estimate the parameters given a certain probe. Here, we propose a continuous-variable (CV) quantum metrology scheme within the Bayesian paradigm to estimate phase shift, loss coefficient and temperature of a dissipative environment. Through numerical evaluation and concrete analysis, we investigate the achievable precision of Bayesian quantum parameter estimation with Gaussian states and homodyne measurements, and the influence of different parameters on the estimation process. More interestingly, the scheme can be applied in more practical scenarios where not enough measurements are obtained and the frequentist analysis is not well defined.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) can guarantee the security of key distribution through the basic principles of quantum mechanics. The theoretical security proof framework of continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD) using two quadrature components to carry encryption key information has also been gradually completed. However, there are still deviations between theoretical assumption and experimental implementation that caused by the imperfection of the practical devices. Aiming at the responsivity of the detection imbalance and angular deviation of the dual homodyne detectors, we propose a pre-calibration and compensation scheme to eliminate the deviation of quadrature components. Specifically, the cross-correlation between the transmitted and received data is calculated, which is used to derive the transmission matrix. According to this transmission matrix, the data can be compensated during the actual CV-QKD. We simulate our scheme under different detector noises, responsivity imbalance, and angular deviation of the dual homodyne detectors. The results show that the scheme can accurately compensate the data, keep the excess noise below the security threshold, and generate the secure key even using imperfect devices. At the same time, the experiment also shows that this scheme can recover the quantum signal well and reduce the excess noise effectively. Considering that this scheme can solve the imperfect but common device problems, it makes a crucial step toward the new generation of practical CV-QKD systems based on signal processing. Finite sampling bandwidth of analog-to-digital converter (ADC) has an effect on performance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD). The matter results in a considerable decrease in performance and leaves the practical security of the system, brought on by a safe loophole exploited by eavesdropper to launch the potential attacks. The linear relationship between secret key rate and repetition frequency is thus restrained from this challenge. To seek and deal with such a loophole in CVQKD with discrete modulation, we suggest a dual sampling detection approach that involves two ADCs in data processing. Security analysis shows that the performance of the discretely modulated (DM) CVQKD system can be improved in terms of the secret key rate and maximal transmission distance. To compensate for the loss in free space, we deploy an adaptive optics (AO) unit in the detector of the CVQKD system with discrete modulations. Since the closed-loop control bandwidth of the embedded AO unit can be optimized with the sampling frequency, the practical security of the system can be enhanced in terms of the secret key rate. The security analysis is demonstrated on the basis of the derived secret key rate with numerical simulations, providing a feasible implementation of CVQKD in realistic free-space environments. Elliptic curves are planar curves which can be used to define an abelian group. The computation of this group's addition operation, as well as related operations such as the discrete logarithm, could be performed on quantum computing devices, potentially leading to better performance. Currently, however, thousands of logical qubits are required for elliptic curve group addition, putting this application out of reach for near-term quantum hardware. Here we give an algorithm for computing elliptic curve group addition (over the real numbers) using a single continuous-variable mode, based on weak measurements of a system with a cubic potential energy. This article, proposes a reconfigurable quantum photonic convolutional layer (QPCL) based on the reconfigurable photonic gates. The QPCL is used in the classical photonic CNN, where, an array of reconfigurable photonic gates (RPG) are arranged in a systematic way. The designed reconfigurable photonic gate serves as a unit cell for quantum photonic operations such as beam splitting, rotation, displacement, squeezing, and cubic- phase shifting. The designed RPG provides the features namely broadband operation, low insertion loss and compact layout. The information in the quantum photonic is represented by entangled states. Here, in this work we specifically focused on hand-written image recognition, hence the pixels of the image are represented as entangled state. The configuration of reconfigurable photonic gate is accomplished using electro-optic P-i-N carrier injection mechanism. As compared to Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based realization, the proposed silicon reconfigurable photonic gate provides scalable operation and compact footprint. The reconfigurable photonic gate is modeled using 2D finite element beam propagation method (FE-BPM). Finally, a compact numerical model is developed which performs Gaussian based continuous-variable (CV) quantum photonic operations and are verified with Xanadu's strawberryfields quantum photonic simulator and PennyLane deep learning framework. The optimized accuracy (loss) is obtained with the utilization of QPCL layer and the values are 0.7627 (0.9595), this optimum result is obtained using a single QPCL layer with an epoch number of 30. Finally, a comparative analysis is made between quantum CNN and classical photonic CNN, where the quantum CNN resulted in 6.553% high accuracy and 6.988% low loss compared to the classical photonic CNN. Continuous variable quantum teleportation (CVQT) is one of the technologies currently explored to implement global quantum networks. Entanglement source is an indispensable resource to realize CVQT, and its distribution process has natural symmetry. Though there are many results for CVQT over optical fiber or atmospheric channel, little attention is paid to seawater channel. In this paper, a model based on seawater chlorophyll concentration is used to study the attenuation effect of seawater on light. In our scheme, a noiseless linear amplifier is utilized for enhancing the performance of CVQT under seawater channel. Continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI-QKD) allows remote parties to share information-theoretical secure keys while defending all the side-channel attacks on measurement devices. However, the secure transmission distance and the secret key rate are quite limited due to the high untrusted equivalent excess noise in the Gaussian modulation. More particularly, extremely high-efficiency homodyne detections are required for even non-zero secure transmission distances, which directly restrict its practical realization. Here, we propose a CV-MDI-QKD protocol by encoding the key information into matched discrete phases of two groups of coherent states, which decreases the required detection efficiency for ideally asymmetric cases, and makes it possible to practically achieve secure key distribution with current low-efficiency homodyne detections. Besides, a proof-of-principle experiment with a locally generated oscillator is implemented, which, for the first time, demonstrates the realizability of CV-MDI-QKD using all fiber-based devices. A saturation attack can be employed for compromising the practical security of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD). In this paper, we suggest a countermeasure approach to resisting this attack by embedding an adjustable optical filter (AOF) in the CVQKD system. Numerical simulations illustrate the effects of the AOF-enabled countermeasure on the performance in terms of the secret key rate and transmission distance. The legal participants can trace back the information that has been eavesdropped by an attacker from the imperfect receiver, which indicates that this approach can be used for defeating a saturation attack in practical quantum communications. A modified thermal states quantum cryptography is proposed by adding the noise at Bob's side and the impact of finite‐size effects focused on by performing the channel estimation. An optimal noise which can maximize the key rate is demonstrated to exist and, by using numeric simulations, is shown to vary with the transmission distance. Adding the optimal noise can enhance the effectiveness of the thermal states quantum cryptography protocol under noisy and lossy channel in terms of secret key rate, the maximum transmission distance and the tolerable channel noise. Although finite‐size effects deteriorate the performance of thermal quantum cryptography, this approach can compensate the impact of this degradation, and even make the performance of the modified protocol in the finite‐size regime better than that of the original protocol in the ideal asymptotic regime. Satellite-based quantum key distribution (QKD) has lately received considerable attention due to its potential to establish a secure global network. Associated with its application is a turbulent atmosphere that sets a notable restriction to the transmission efficiency, which is especially challenging for ground-to-satellite uplink scenarios. Here, we propose a novel noiseless attenuation (NA) scheme involving a zero-photon catalysis operation for source preparation to improve the performance of continuous-variable (CV) QKD over uplink. Numerical analysis shows that the NA-based CV-QKD, under attenuation optimization, outperforms the traditional CV-QKD, which is embodied in extending the allowable zenith angle while improving the effective communication time. Attributing to characteristics of the attenuation optimization, we find that the NA-involved source preparation improves the security bound by relatively reducing the amount of information available to eavesdroppers. Taking the finite-size effect into account, we achieve a tighter bond of security, which is more practical compared with the asymptotic limit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Discrete-modulation continuous-variable (CV) quantum key distribution has the potential for large-scale deployment in secure quantum communication networks owing to its low implementation complexity and compatibility with the current coherent optical telecommunication. However, current discrete-modulation protocols require relatively large constellation sizes to achieve a key rate comparable to that of the Gaussian modulation. Here, we show that a high key rate comparable to the Gaussian modulation can be achieved using only ten or so coherent states by implementing suitable key map and numerical convex optimization techniques. Specifically, the key rate of the two-ring constellation with 12 coherent states (four states in the inner ring and eight states in the outer ring) can reach 2.4 times of that of original quadrature phase shift keying and 70% of the Gaussian modulation protocol at 50 km. Such an approach can easily be applied to existing systems, making the discrete-modulation protocol an attractive alternative for high-rate and low-cost applications in secure quantum communication networks.

Side-channel attack is a serious impairment for the key generation processing in the continuous-variable quantum digital signature protocol. Based on measurement-device-independent components, we present a continuous-variable quantum digital signature protocol, so that the topology removes the loopholes of the practical detectors and eliminates all side-channel attacks. Without loss of generality, we consider the protocol involving three participants, whom independently decides whether to send a quantum pulse or a local oscillator pulse to the intermediate station at any time window. What's more, we propose to employ phase-encoding and state-encoding strategies simultaneously that performing once key generation processing can obtain twin signatures. Motivated by the dense coding and teleportation of two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) state, a continuous-variable arbitrated quantum signature (CV-AQS) scheme is proposed. The signer Alice generates the signature by the dense coding and sends it to the verifier Bob. The measurement results of two quadrature components serve for the recovery of the secret message. With the help of the arbitrator Charlie, Bob verifies the validity of the signature. The security of the presented protocol is protected by the calculation of the fidelity parameter and the implementation process of two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) state teleportation. Moreover, the proposed scheme can be correctly implemented in the lossy and lossless transmission with a higher capacity.

Continuous variable quantum teleportation (CVQT) is one of the technologies currently explored to implement global quantum networks. Entanglement source is an indispensable resource to realize CVQT, and its distribution process has natural symmetry. Though there are many results for CVQT over optical fiber or atmospheric channel, little attention is paid to seawater channel. In this paper, a model based on seawater chlorophyll concentration is used to study the attenuation effect of seawater on light. In our scheme, a noiseless linear amplifier is utilized for enhancing the performance of CVQT under seawater channel. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has an improvement in terms of fidelity and maximum transmission distance compared with the original scheme.

Continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI-QKD) allows remote parties to share information-theoretical secure keys while defending all the side-channel attacks on measurement devices. However, the secure transmission distance and the secret key rate are quite limited due to the high untrusted equivalent excess noise in the Gaussian modulation. More particularly, extremely high-efficiency homodyne detections are required for even non-zero secure transmission distances, which directly restrict its practical realization. Here, we propose a CV-MDI-QKD protocol by encoding the key information into matched discrete phases of two groups of coherent states, which decreases the required detection efficiency for ideally asymmetric cases, and makes it possible to practically achieve secure key distribution with current low-efficiency homodyne detections. Besides, a proof-of-principle experiment with a locally generated oscillator is implemented, which, for the first time, demonstrates the realizability of CV-MDI-QKD using all fiber-based devices. The discrete-modulated phase-matching method provides an alternative direction of an applicable quantum key distribution with practical security.

A saturation attack can be employed for compromising the practical security of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD). In this paper, we suggest a countermeasure approach to resisting this attack by embedding an adjustable optical filter (AOF) in the CVQKD system. Numerical simulations illustrate the effects of the AOF-enabled countermeasure on the performance in terms of the secret key rate and transmission distance. The legal participants can trace back the information that has been eavesdropped by an attacker from the imperfect receiver, which indicates that this approach can be used for defeating a saturation attack in practical quantum communications.

The secure transfer of information is critical to the ever-increasing demands of the digital world. Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) is a promising technology that can provide high secret key rates over metropolitan areas, using conventional telecom components. In this study, we demonstrate the utilization of CV-QKD over a 15 km multi-core fiber (MCF), in which we take advantage of one core to remotely frequency lock Bob's local oscillator with Alice's transmitter. We also demonstrate the capacity of the MCF to boost the secret key rate by parallelizing CV-QKD across multiple cores. Our results indicate that MCFs are promising for the metropolitan deployment of QKD systems.

Continuous-variable measure-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI QKD) is proposed to remove all imperfections originating from detection. However, there are still some inevitable imperfections in a practical CV-MDI QKD system. For example, there is a fluctuating channel transmittance in the complex communication environments. Here we investigate the security of the system under the effects of the fluctuating channel transmittance, where the transmittance is regarded as a fixed value related to communication distance in theory. We first discuss the parameter estimation in fluctuating channel transmittance based on these establishing of channel models, which has an obvious deviation compared with the estimated parameters in the ideal case. Then, we show the evaluated results when the channel transmittance respectively obeys the two-point distribution and the uniform distribution. In particular, the two distributions can be easily realized under the manipulation of eavesdroppers. Finally, we analyze the secret key rate of the system when the channel transmittance obeys the above distributions. The simulation analysis indicates that a slight fluctuation of the channel transmittance may seriously reduce the performance of the system, especially in the extreme asymmetric case. Furthermore, the communication between Alice, Bob and Charlie may be immediately interrupted. Therefore, eavesdroppers can manipulate the channel transmittance to complete a denial-of-service attack in a practical CV-MDI QKD system. To resist this attack, the Gaussian post-selection method can be exploited to calibrate the parameter estimation to reduce the deterioration of performance of the system.

Establishing global secure networks is a potential implementation of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) but it is also challenged with respect to long-distance transmission. The discrete modulation (DM) can make up for the shortage of transmission distance in that it has a unique advantage against all side-channel attacks; however, its further performance improvement requires source preparation in the presence of noise and loss. Here, we consider the effects of photon catalysis (PC) on the DM-involved source preparation for improving the transmission distance. We address a zero-photon-catalysis (ZPC)-based source preparation for enhancing the DM–CVQKD system. The statistical fluctuation is taken into account for the practical security analysis. Numerical simulations show that the ZPC-based source preparation can not only achieve the long-distance transmission, but also contributes to the reasonable increase of the secret key rate. The continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI-QKD) is a promising candidate for the immunity to side-channel attacks, but unfortunately seems to face the limitation of transmission distance in contrast to discrete-variable (DV) counterpart. In this paper, we suggest a method of improving the performance of CV-MDI-QKD involving the achievable secret key rate and transmission distance by using zero-photon catalysis (ZPC), which is indeed a noiseless attenuation process. The numerical simulation results show that the transmission distance of ZPC-based CV-MDI-QKD under the extreme asymmetric case is better than that of the original protocol. Attractively, in contrast to the previous single-photon subtraction (SPS)-based CV-MDI-QKD, the proposed scheme enables a higher secret key rate and a longer transmission distance. Unidimensional continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) protocol with Gaussian modulation is simpler in implementation and lower in costs than its two-dimensional counterpart, but its secure transmission distance is not as far as the latter. In this paper, we give a solution that using the photon subtraction, which is one of non-Gaussian operations, to improve the performance of the unidimensional CV-QKD protocol. Establishing high-rate secure communications is a potential application of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) but still challenging for the long-distance transmission technology compatible with modern optical communication systems. Here, we propose a photon subtraction-induced plug-and-play scheme for enhancing CVQKD with discrete-modulation (DM), avoiding the traditional loopholes opened by the transmission of local oscillator. A photon subtraction operation is involved in the plug-and-play scheme for detection while resisting the extra untrusted source noise of the DM-CVQKD system. We analyze the relationship between secret key rate, channel losses, and untrusted source noise. The simulation result shows that the photon-subtracted scheme enhances the performance in terms of the maximal transmission distance and make up for the deficiency of the original system effectively. We improve the thermal states quantum cryptography by inserting the linear optics cloning machine (LOCM) into Bob's side. This approach can enhance the effectiveness of the practical quantum cryptography under noisy resources and channel in terms of secret key rate and transmission distance. General quantum key agreement (QKA) protocols require each participant to make the same contribution to the generation of a shared key, but this situation cannot meet the needs of government or military which require a third party only to control key agreement process. This paper proposed a continuous-variable quantum key agreement (CVQKA) protocol with multi-party Greenberg–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) entangled states generated by a third party. The third party prepares quantum states by sending multi-photon beam with higher emission frequency and stronger signal. Taking continuous variable as carrier, the information carried by each carrier increases, which improves the security key rate. In this paper, the third party controls but does not contribute to the final key. After receiving the states, each participant encodes his or her own key, adds a decoy state and sends it to the next participant, until receiving the quantum state that was encoded by all the participants. Then, participants can measure and calculate to get the final shared key. It shows that our protocol is easy to implement and has high efficiency. Satellite-based quantum key distribution (QKD) has lately received considerable attention due to its potential to establish a secure global network. Associated with its application is a turbulent atmosphere that sets a notable restriction to the transmission efficiency, which is especially challenging for ground-to-satellite uplink scenarios. Here, we propose a novel noiseless attenuation (NA) scheme involving a zero-photon catalysis operation for source preparation to improve the performance of continuous-variable (CV) QKD over uplink. Numerical analysis shows that the NA-based CV-QKD, under attenuation optimization, outperforms the traditional CV-QKD, which is embodied in extending the allowable zenith angle while improving the effective communication time. Attributing to characteristics of the attenuation optimization, we find that the NA-involved source preparation improves the security bound by relatively reducing the amount of information available to eavesdroppers. Taking the finite-size effect into account, we achieve a tighter bond of security, which is more practical compared with the asymptotic limit.

The secret key rate is one of the main obstacles to the practical application of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD). In this paper, we propose a multiplexing scheme to increase the secret key rate of the CVQKD system with orbital angular momentum (OAM). The propagation characteristics of a typical vortex beam, involving the Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beam, are analyzed in an atmospheric channel for the Kolmogorov turbulence model. Discrete modulation is utilized to extend the maximal transmission distance. We show the effect of the transmittance of the beam over the turbulent channel on the secret key rate and the transmission distance. Numerical simulations indicate that the OAM multiplexing scheme can improve the performance of the CVQKD system and hence has potential use for practical high-rate quantum communications.

We propose a continuous-variable quantum secret sharing (CVQSS) scheme based on thermal terahertz (THz) sources in inter-satellite wireless links (THz-CVQSS). In this scheme, firstly, each player locally preforms Gaussian modulation to prepare a thermal THz state, and then couples it into a circulating spatiotemporal mode using a highly asymmetric beam splitter. At the end, the dealer measures the quadrature components of the received spatiotemporal mode through performing the heterodyne detection to share secure keys with all the players of a group. This design enables that the key can be recovered only by the whole group players’ knowledge in cooperation and neither a single player nor any subset of the players in the group can recover the key correctly. We analyze both the security and the performance of THz-CVQSS in inter-satellite links. Results show that a long-distance inter-satellite THz-CVQSS scheme with multiple players is feasible. This work will provide an effective way for building an inter-satellite quantum communication network.

Local oscillator (LO) acted as a reference to define the phase of quantum signals is necessary for coherent detection in continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD), and LO fluctuation caused by atmospheric channel brings the added excess noise into CVQKD. Here, we investigate the influence of atmospheric effects on the excess noise in free space CVQKD, and analyse the excess noise tolerance of systems with diverse modulations. And we obtain the critical condition that the excess noise related to LO remains constant under atmospheric effects. The results show that under general attacks, Gaussian-modulation which performs better in the short range propagation of high key rate has better excess noise tolerance than discrete-modulation that is propitious to distribute low key rate over distant propagation. Moreover, in discrete-modulation under collective attack, higher-order-state has higher secret key rate, better excess noise tolerance and longer propagation distance than lower-order-state. Gaussian modulation is one of the key steps for the implementation of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) schemes. However, imperfection in the Gaussian modulation may introduce modulation noise that can deteriorate the performance of CVQKD systems. In this paper, we mainly investigate how to improve the performance of a CVQKD system from different aspects. First, we explore the several different origins, impacts and monitoring schemes for the modulation noise in detail. Then, we discuss the practical performance of a CVQKD system with an untrusted noise model and neutral party model, respectively. These analyses indicate that the neutral party model should be reasonably regarded as a general noise model, which will passively and greatly raise the performance of the system. Further, we propose a dynamic auto-bias control scheme to actively resist the modulation noise which comes from the drift of bias point of the amplitude modulator. Together these methods contribute to the improvement of the practical performance of CVQKD systems with imperfect Gaussian modulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
