A battery energy storage system (BESS) can play a critical role in regulating system frequency and voltage in an islanded microgrid. A $\mu$ -synthesis-based robust control has been proposed for dc link voltage regulation of BESS for achieving frequency regulation and voltage quality enhancement of islanded microgrid. Variation in the operating condition of ac microgrid affects the operating condition of the BESS’ converter. This controller synthesis accounts for such uncertain variations as parametric uncertainty. The stability and performance of the proposed controller can be guaranteed for bounded parametric variations. The bounds on parameters are selected based on practical limitations of BESS. In this article, the proposed controller's performance is tested on an islanded CIGRE TF C6:04:02 benchmark low voltage ac microgrid system. The importance of dc link voltage regulation is analyzed based on performance comparison with a benchmark controller. The controller performance is also validated using a real-time Typhoon HIL emulator.

This paper proposes a democratic current sharing controller for Modular Multi-parallel Rectifiers (MMR) system operating in Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM). A generalised small-signal AC model for n-number of parallel units is derived. Also, State-Space equations and transfer functions for the system are provided in this paper. A cascaded loops controller for the parallel units is utilised to ensure that the rectifiers' currents are balanced equally. A 60 kW system is modelled in MATLAB/Simulink to verify the proposed controller.

This paper presents a comprehensive steady-state analysis for active front-end Modular Multi-parallel Rectifiers (MMR) including parasitic elements. Generalised mathematical representations for the system’s gain and conduction loss effect are provided. In addition, the impact of the inductor losses and the firing angle on the system’s performance is investigated. A60kW Simulink model is utilised to validate the proposed mathematical model and the system characteristics and operating modes.

With increasing photovoltaic (PV) penetration in low-voltage (LV) distribution networks, voltage violation during the peak PV generation period is one of the main power quality concerns. To minimize the PV power curtailment caused by voltage violations, this paper proposes a new approach utilizing one dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) at the secondary of an existing urban distribution transformer as a continuous voltage compensator with an accompanying control algorithm. The voltage compensation algorithm controls the DVR in real-time to prevent over-voltage and under-voltage at all network nodes, thereby maximizing PV injection and preventing equipment damage. The controller uses the equivalent line impedance of network to estimate the average voltage of load points without the need for any communication links for measuring load voltages. In this approach, the fixed tap changer of the distribution transformer is also optimally adjusted to minimize the DVR rating using a proposed offline optimization method. Simulation results on IEEE LV test feeder prove the ability of the DVR in maintaining all network node voltages within the allowable range in peak demand and peak PV generation periods with the benefit of injecting only a small amount of active and reactive power to the system, in contrast to alternative algorithms.

Demand for converter-fed distributed energy resources are rapidly growing in microgrids and these energy sources are mainly responsible for sharing loads in islanded mode of operation. In high voltage lines, sharing real and reactive load power requirements can be achieved by conventional droop control methods, nevertheless strong coupling between active and reactive power in medium voltage lines with low X/R ratio degrades rating-based load sharing among converters. A transformation matrix which incorporates the line impedance effect in droop parameter calculation by modifying droop coefficients can be used to overcome this drawback. However, inclusion of power decoupling term in reference voltage calculation, has found to be more powerful to overcome coupling effects in load power sharing. By utilizing lesser steady state frequency deviation of angle droop in comparison with frequency droop, this paper adopts angle droop in real power loop. Angle droop concept along with power decoupling factor has an added advantage of improved reactive power sharing with surplus accuracy in real power distribution, which in turn, allows harmonic power distribution based on converter rating under different load conditions. Moreover, discrete state feedback control together with third harmonic injection-based pulse width modulation scheme provides additional robustness to individual converters.

This paper proposes a supervisory control scheme to facilitate coupling of remote droop-regulated microgrids (MGs) during power shortfalls. In this scheme, instead of power converters, an instantaneous static switch is incorporated for the interconnection. Therefore a supervisory controller is essential to cope with the associated challenges, which are: 1) the level of supporting power provided by the neighboring MG and 2) isolation procedure of the coupled MGs (CMG) when the power deficiency condition is removed. Droop coefficients of distributed generators of the overloaded MG are dynamically updated by the controller according to the three operating modes defined to address the aforementioned challenges. The transit criteria, as well as the controlling signals, are accurately formulated based only on the local measurements to decrease the dependency on the communication systems. This enhances the reliability level of the coupled system. Effectiveness of the proposed strategy is validated through the results obtained from PSCAD/EMTDC simulations. Also, small-signal stability of the CMG operated by the proposed controller is examined using a developed model in MATLAB.

This study proposes a decentralised droop control method for guaranteeing precise load sharing among distributed resources in an islanded microgrid. Distributed resources are usually fed through power electronic converters and the switching harmonics produced by them are eliminated by third-order output LCL filters. Output impedance is considered as a major factor for finding exact power-angle droop coefficient in droop design - neglecting this factor can affect the load sharing accuracy. Even though an acceptable active power sharing can be achieved with higher droop gains, increased droop gain may adversely affect the microgrid stability. Here, a modified angle droop control is proposed such that the dependence on the output inductance on the real power sharing is removed. Thus, the lower droop coefficients are sufficient for droop sharing and the system stability is not endangered. It has been assumed that the microgrid is converter-dominated, where a proportionalresonant controller has been utilised for converter switching control. This controller has an outer voltage loop and an inner current loop. A harmonic term has been added to the voltage loop to facilitate more accurate reactive power sharing. Simulation studies are conducted using PSCAD/EMTDC to validate the efficacy of the proposed controller.

This paper proposes a cooperative control of battery energy storage (BES) units within a microgrid (MG) which includes two control subsystems for charge and discharge operation mode of the BES. In addition, the proposed cooperative control strategy provides accurate reactive power sharing among the BES units. During discharge operation, the proposed strategy utilizes a SoC-based droop control in order to avoid promptly depleting of the BES units, by dedicating the highest priority to their SoC level and respecting their power rating. This is achieved without any disturbance in the power balance of the MG. In addition, during charge operation of the BES units, the proposed control method uses a proportional-integral (PI) controller to limit the BES absorbing power and match it with the available surplus power from the renewable energy sources (RESs). This in turn avoids any power imbalance within the system. Finally, to utilize the extra capacity of the BES converters and also to avoid overloading of RESs, a new adaptive virtual impedance (AVI) strategy is proposed here which provides accurate reactive power sharing by imposing a virtual impedance in series with the coupling impedance of each BES and RES unit. The system performance is validated through extensive simulations carried out in PSCAD/EMTDC software.

An LCL filter utilized in an active front end (AFE) converter can generate significant resonance, which can affect quality and stability of the system. Thus, a proper active or passive damping technique and/or a suitable controller is required to be designed for the converter. The duty cycle constraint—though inevitable in practical inverter systems—is often ignored in most of the existing literature. The effects of measurement noise on filter control system performance must be considered and evaluated under different conditions. Finally, almost all inverter control systems are implemented digitally using microcontrollers. Consequently, the effects of sampling on control system stability and performance should be evaluated as well. Thus, this paper presents stability analysis of an AFE converter-based filter design with a complete practical system configuration, including saturation and sampling blocks and measurement noises. Mathematical analysis and simulations have been carried out to validate the proposed method.

Presence of large number of single-phase, customer-owned, distributed energy resources that are installed randomly in any phase of Low Voltage (LV) distribution feeders, may lead the generation, in a particular phase, to exceed its load demand. This may result in reverse power flow in that phase towards the upstream network while in the other phases, power flows from the upstream network to the LV feeder. To avoid such problems, this paper proposes the use of Distribution Static Compensators (DSTATCOM) to circulate the reverse flowing power from one phase to the other phases. In this paper, the installation of DSTATCOMs is considered in the medium voltage feeders. The DSTATCOM can be connected in either wye or delta, both of these connections are explored here. Different control strategies are developed for each connection. The main objective of the DSTATCOM is to provide a path for the power, to circulate among the phases, through its DC link. The DSTATCOM controller is further developed to balance its upstream powers and to supply the load reactive power demand. The proposed configurations and the developed control methods for the DSTATCOM are numerically validated through extensive computer simulation studies in PSCAD/EMTDC.

This paper presents dynamic analysis of a Modular Multi-Parallel Rectifier (MMR) based on state-space modelling. The proposed topology is suitable for high power motor drive or multi-parallel AC-DC applications, which can reduce line current harmonics emissions significantly. However, a proper controller is required to share and control current through each rectifier. Mathematical analysis and simulations have been carried out to verify the proposed controller under different operating conditions.

This study proposes a new method for stabilising disturbed power systems using wide-area measurement and controllable devices. A new control algorithm based on kinetic energy is proposed to be applied on the controllers to improve the first swing stability of power systems following large disturbances while also damping the subsequent inter-area oscillations. The wide-area controller is implemented by using the Kalman filter estimation of the area-based model of the system, to stabilise the inter-area dynamic and improve the stability margin of the system. The proposed approach is simulated on several test systems and the results show significant improvement in the first swing and damping stability of the test systems.

This paper proposes a control strategy for sharing load requirements in a low voltage islanded microgrid with converter interfaced distributed energy resources. In high voltage lines with large X/R ratio, real and reactive power are decoupled and thus conventional droop control can effectively share the power needs of the load. However, the same strategy cannot be applicable in dominantly resistive remote microgrids where, X/R ratio is very small. In order to ensure accurate sharing of load power, this paper adopts cut in contrast of conventional angle droop control, where active power sharing is achieved by controlling voltage and reactive power by angle droop method. In addition, virtual resistive output impedance is utilized to effectively decouple real and reactive power. Moreover, this strategy includes influence of line impedance in load power sharing and offers an added advantage of effective overall system damping. Third harmonic injection based pulse width modulation scheme is used for each distributed generators(DGs), which provides better utilization of DC link voltage and suppress neutral currents under unbalanced conditions.

A new approach is proposed for obtaining a non-linear area-based equivalent model of power systems to express the inter-area oscillations using synchronised phasor measurements. The generators that remain coherent for inter-area disturbances over a wide range of operating conditions define the areas, and the reduced model is obtained by representing each area by an equivalent machine. The parameters of the reduced system are identified by processing the obtained measurements, and a non-linear Kalman estimator is then designed for the estimation of equivalent area angles and frequencies. The simulation of the approach on a two-area system shows substantial reduction of non-inter-area modes in the estimated angles. The proposed methods are also applied to a ten-machine system to illustrate the feasibility of the approach on larger and meshed networks. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2014.

To minimise the number of load sheddings in a microgrid (MG) during autonomous operation, islanded neighbour MGs can be interconnected if they are on a self-healing network and an extra generation capacity is available in the distributed energy resources (DER) of one of the MGs. In this way, the total load in the system of interconnected MGs can be shared by all the DERs within those MGs. However, for this purpose, carefully designed self-healing and supply restoration control algorithm, protection systems and communication infrastructure are required at the network and MG levels. In this study, first, a hierarchical control structure is discussed for interconnecting the neighbour autonomous MGs where the introduced primary control level is the main focus of this study. Through the developed primary control level, this study demonstrates how the parallel DERs in the system of multiple interconnected autonomous MGs can properly share the load of the system. This controller is designed such that the converter-interfaced DERs operate in a voltage-controlled mode following a decentralised power sharing algorithm based on droop control. DER converters are controlled based on a per-phase technique instead of a conventional direct-quadratic transformation technique. In addition, linear quadratic regulator-based state feedback controllers, which are more stable than conventional proportional integrator controllers, are utilised to prevent instability and weak dynamic performances of the DERs when autonomous MGs are interconnected. The efficacy of the primary control level of the DERs in the system of multiple interconnected autonomous MGs is validated through the PSCAD/EMTDC simulations considering detailed dynamic models of DERs and converters.

An iterative based strategy is proposed for finding the optimal rating and location of fixed and switched capacitors in distribution networks. The substation Load Tap Changer tap is also set during this procedure. A Modified Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization is employed in the proposed strategy. The objective function is composed of the distribution line loss cost and the capacitors investment cost. The line loss is calculated using estimation of the load duration curve to multiple levels. The constraints are the bus voltage and the feeder current which should be maintained within their standard range. For validation of the proposed method, two case studies are tested. The first case study is the semi-urban 37-bus distribution system which is connected at bus 2 of the Roy Billinton Test System which is located in the secondary side of a 33/11 kV distribution substation. The second case is a 33 kV distribution network based on the modification of the 18-bus IEEE distribution system. The results are compared with prior publications to illustrate the accuracy of the proposed strategy.

A new control method for battery storage to maintain acceptable voltage profile in autonomous microgrids is proposed in this article. The proposed battery control ensures that the bus voltages in the microgrid are maintained during disturbances such as load change, loss of micro-sources, or distributed generations hitting power limit. Unlike the conventional storage control based on local measurements, the proposed method is based on an advanced control technique, where the reference power is determined based on the voltage drop profile at the battery bus. An artificial neural network based controller is used to determine the reference power needed for the battery to hold the microgrid voltage within regulation limits. The pattern of drop in the local bus voltage during power imbalance is used to train the controller off-line. During normal operation, the battery floats with the local bus voltage without any power injection. The battery is charged or discharged during the transients with a high gain feedback loop. Depending on the rate of voltage fall, it is switched to power control mode to inject the reference power determined by the proposed controller. After a defined time period, the battery power injection is reduced to zero using slow reverse-droop characteristics, ensuring a slow rate of increase in power demand from the other distributed generations. The proposed control method is simulated for various operating conditions in a microgrid with both inertial and converter interfaced sources. The proposed battery control provides a quick load pick up and smooth load sharing with the other micro-sources in a disturbance. With various disturbances, maximum voltage drop over 8% with conventional energy storage is reduced within 2.5% with the proposed control method.

Coupling remote microgrids (MGs) is a promising technique to handle power deficiency in such systems. However, once the shortfall is removed, the coupled MGs (CMG) should isolate to carry on their operation autonomously. Due to the non-zero power still flowing through the tie-line, however, considerable voltage spikes may be imposed on the interconnecting static switch (ISS) during the isolation that may damage the device. This paper proposes a practical decentralized approach to efficiently alleviate the mentioned transients, facilitating a successful MG isolation procedure. Two auxiliary controllable loads (ACL) are to be considered at two sides of the ISS. When the necessity of applying the isolation action is detected, the ISS controller commands the ACL on the supporting MG side to connect. A droop-based scheme is formulated to derive the load should be demanded by the ACL such that the power passing through the ISS drops to zero, preventing any spikes across it at the opening moment. Once the isolation action is accomplished, the controller disconnects the ACL. Efficiency of the proposed algorithm is validated through various cases simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC.

Common-mode voltage generated by a power converter in combination with parasitic capacitive couplings is a potential source of shaft voltage in an AC motor drive system. In this study, a three-phase motor drive system supplied with a single-phase AC-DC diode rectifier is investigated in order to reduce shaft voltage in a three-phase AC motor drive system. In this topology, the AC-DC diode rectifier influences the common-mode voltage generated by the inverter because the placement of the neutral point is changing in different rectifier circuit states. A pulse width modulation technique is presented by a proper placement of the zero vectors to reduce the common-mode voltage level, which leads to a cost-effective shaft voltage reduction technique without load current distortion, while keeping the switching frequency constant. Analysis, simulations and experimental implementation have been presented to investigate the proposed method.

The degree of proliferation of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and application of power electronics appliances are in demand. A microgrid can contain variety of sources such as diesel generator, wind turbine, PV arrays, micro-turbine and fuel cell. Usually these sources share power where the system frequency changes depending on the power supplied. On the other hand, the microgrid can contain harmonic loads that can affect the performance of the synchronous generators. These deleterious effects of distorting loads can be corrected using a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM). In this paper, an isochronous control based droop strategy is employed that forces the microgrid to operate at the base frequency of 50 Hz. Therefore the DSTATCOM can be operated at 50 Hz. A closed-loop space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique is used for the DSTATCOM control. The scheme is validated through the extensive PSCAD/EMTDC simulation studies.

The flying capacitor multicell inverter (FCMI) possesses natural balancing property. With the phase-shifted carrier-based scheme, natural balancing can be achieved in a straightforward manner. However, to achieve natural balancing with the harmonically optimal phase-disposition (PD) carrier-based scheme, the conventional approaches require (n - 1) × (n - 1) trapezoidal carrier signals for an n-level inverter, which is ( n - 1) × (n - 2) times more than that in the standard PD scheme. This paper proposes two improved natural balancing strategies for FCMI under PD scheme, which use the same (n - 1) carrier signals as used in the standard PD scheme. In the first scheme, the on-line detections are performed of (i) the band in which the modulation signal is located, (ii) corresponding period number of the carrier, and (iii) rising or falling half cycle of the carrier waveform to generate the switching signals based on certain rules. In the second strategy, the output voltage level selection is first processed and the switching signals are then generated according to a rule based on preferential cell selection algorithm. These methods are easy to use and can be simply implemented as compared to the other available methods. Simulation and experimental results are presented for a five-level inverter to verify these proposed schemes.

This paper discusses the use of trajectory sensitivity analysis (TSA) in determining the transient stability margin of a power system compensated by a shunt FACTS device. The shunt device used is static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). It is shown that TSA can be used for the design of controller for the STATCOM. The preferable locations for the placement of the STATCOM for different fault conditions are also identified. The effects of STATCOM in maintaining different bus voltages in the post-fault condition are studied. The STATCOM is modeled by a voltage source connected to the system through a transformer. The systems used for the study are the WSCC 3-machine 9-bus system and the IEEE 16-machine 68-bus system.

In this contribution, a stability analysis for a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) connected to a weak ac system containing a dynamic load is presented using continuation techniques and bifurcation theory. The system dynamics are explored through the continuation of periodic solutions of the associated dynamic equations. The switching process in the DVR converter is taken into account to trace the stability regions through a suitable mathematical representation of the DVR converter. The stability regions in the Thevenin equivalent plane are computed. In addition, the stability regions in the control gains space, as well as the contour lines for different Floquet multipliers, are computed. Besides, the DVR converter model employed in this contribution avoids the necessity of developing very complicated iterative map approaches as in the conventional bifurcation analysis of converters. The continuation method and the DVR model can take into account dynamics and nonlinear loads and any network topology since the analysis is carried out directly from the state space equations. The bifurcation approach is shown to be both computationally efficient and robust, since it eliminates the need for numerically critical and long-lasting transient simulations. In this paper, the performance of voltage-source converter-based shunt and series compensators used for load voltage control in electrical power distribution systems has been analyzed and compared, when a nonlinear load is connected across the load bus. The comparison has been made based on the closed-loop frequency resopnse characteristics of the compensated distribution system. A distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) as a shunt device and a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) as a series device are considered in the voltage-control mode for the comparison. The power-quality problems which these compensator address include voltage sags/swells, load voltage harmonic distortions, and unbalancing. The effect of various system parameters on the control performance of the compensator can be studied using the proposed analysis. In particular, the performance of the two compensators are compared with the strong ac supply (stiff source) and weak ac-supply (non-still source) distribution system. The experimental verification of the analytical results derived has been obtained using a laboratory model of the single-phase DSTATCOM and DVR. A generalized converter topology using a cascaded multilevel inverter has been proposed for the medium-voltage distribution system. Simulation studies have been performed in the PSCAD/EMTDC software to verify the results in the three-phase system.

An algorithm based on the concept of combining Kalman filter and Least Error Square (LES) techniques is proposed in this paper. The algorithm is intended to estimate signal attributes like amplitude, frequency and phase angle in the online mode. This technique can be used in protection relays, digital AVRs, DGs, DSTATCOMs, FACTS and other power electronics applications. The Kalman filter is modified to operate on a fictitious input signal and provides precise estimation results insensitive to noise and other disturbances. At the same time, the LES system has been arranged to operate in critical transient cases to compensate the delay and inaccuracy identified because of the response of the standard Kalman filter. Practical considerations such as the effect of noise, higher order harmonics, and computational issues of the algorithm are considered and tested in the paper. Several computer simulations and a laboratory test are presented to highlight the usefulness of the proposed method. Simulation results show that the proposed technique can simultaneously estimate the signal attributes, even if it is highly distorted due to the presence of non-linear loads and noise.

This paper proposes new droop control methods for load sharing in a rural area with distributed generation. Highly resistive lines, typical of rural low voltage networks, always create a big challenge for conventional droop control. To overcome the conflict between higher feedback gain for better power sharing and system stability in angle droop, two control methods have been proposed. The first method considers no communication among the distributed generators (DGs) and regulates the converter output voltage and angle ensuring proper sharing of load in a system having strong coupling between real and reactive power due to high line resistance. The second method, based on a smattering of communication, modifies the reference output volt-age angle of the DGs depending on the active and reactive power flow in the lines connected to point of common coupling (PCC). It is shown that with the second proposed control method, an economical and minimum communication system can achieve significant improvement in load sharing. The difference in error margin between proposed control schemes and a more costly high bandwidth communication system is small and the later may not be justified considering the increase in cost. The proposed control shows stable operation of the system for a range of operating conditions while ensuring satisfactory load sharing.

This article deals with the non-linear oscillations assessment of a distribution static compensator operating in voltage control mode using the bifurcation theory. A mathematical model of the distribution static compensator in the voltage control mode to carry out the bifurcation analysis is derived. The stability regions in the Thevenin equivalent plane are computed. In addition, the stability regions in the control gains space, as well as the contour lines for different Floquet multipliers are computed. The AC and DC capacitor impacts on the stability are analyzed through the bifurcation theory. The observations are verified through simulation studies. The computation of the stability region allows the assessment of the stable operating zones for a power system that includes a distribution static compensator operating in the voltage mode.

In rural low-voltage networks, distribution lines are usually highly resistive. When many distributed generators are connected to such lines, power sharing among them is difficult when using conventional droop control, as the real and reactive power have strong coupling with each other. A high droop gain can alleviate this problem but may lead the system to instability. To overcome4 this, two droop control methods are proposed for accurate load sharing with frequency droop controller. The first method considers no communication among the distributed generators and regulates the output voltage and frequency, ensuring acceptable load sharing. The droop equations are modified with a transformation matrix based on the line R/X ration for this purpose. The second proposed method, with minimal low bandwidth communication, modifies the reference frequency of the distributed generators based on the active and reactive power flow in the lines connected to the points of common coupling. The performance of these two proposed controllers is compared with that of a controller, which includes an expensive high bandwidth communication system through time-domain simulation of a test system. The magnitude of errors in power sharing between these three droop control schemes are evaluated and tabulated.

There is a trade off between a number of output voltage levels and the reliability and efficiency of a multilevel converter. A new configuration of diode-clamped multilevel inverters with a different combination of DC link capacitors voltage has been proposed in this paper. Two different symmetrical and asymmetrical unequal arrangements for a four-level diode-clamped inverter have been compared, in order to find an optimum arrangement with lower switching losses and optimised output voltage quality. The simulation and hardware results for a four-level inverter show that the asymmetrical configuration can obtain more output voltage levels with the same number of components compared with a conventional four-level inverter and this will lead to the reduction of the harmonic content of the output voltage. A new family of multi-output DC-DC converters with a simple control strategy has been utilised as a front-end converter to supply the DC link capacitor voltages for the optimised configuration.

This paper presents the design of self-tuning controllers for a two terminal HVDC link. The controllers are designed utilizing a novel discrete-time converter model based on multirate sampling. The nature of converter firing system necessitates the development of a two-step ahead self-tuning control strategy. A two terminal HVDC system study has been carried out to show the effectiveness of the control strategies proposed which include the design of minimum variance controller, pole assigned controller and PLQG controller. The coordinated control of a two terminal HVDC system has been established deriving the signal from inverter end current and voltage which has been estimated based on the measurements of rectifier end quantities only realized through the robust reduced order observer. A well known scaled down sample system data has been selected for studies and the controllers designed have been tested for worst conditions. The performance of self-tuning controllers has been evaluated through digital simulation.

In this paper, a fixed-switching-frequency closed-loop modulation of a voltage-source inverter (VSI), upon the digital implementation of the modulation process, is analyzed and characterized. The sampling frequency of the digital processor is considered as an integer multiple of the modulation switching frequency. An expression for the determination of the modulation design parameter is developed for smooth modulation at a fixed switching frequency. The variation of the sampling frequency, switching frequency, and modulation index has been analyzed for the determination of the switching condition under closed loop. It is shown that the switching condition determined based on the continuous-time analysis of the closed-loop modulation will ensure smooth modulation upon the digital implementation of the modulation process. However, the stability properties need to be tested prior to digital implementation as they get deteriorated at smaller sampling frequencies. The closed-loop modulation index needs to be considered maximum while determining the design parameters for smooth modulation. In particular, a detailed analysis has been carried out by varying the control gain in the sliding-mode control of a two-level VSI. The proposed analysis of the closed-loop modulation of the VSI has been verified for the operation of a distribution static compensator. The theoretical results are validated experimentally on both single- and three-phase systems.

This paper presents the stability analysis for a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) that operates in current control mode based on bifurcation theory. Bifurcations delimit the operating zones of nonlinear circuits and, hence, the capability to compute these bifurcations is of important interest for practical design. A control design for the DSTATCOM is proposed. Along with this control, a suitable mathematical representation of the DSTATCOM is proposed to carry out the bifurcation analysis efficiently. The stability regions in the Thevenin equivalent plane are computed for different power factors at the point of common coupling. In addition, the stability regions in the control gain space, as well as the contour lines for different Floquet multipliers are computed. It is demonstrated through bifurcation analysis that the loss of stability in the DSTATCOM is due to the emergence of a Neimark bifurcation. The observations are verified through simulation studies.

Fast switching transients and common mode voltage generated by pulse width modulated voltage in high frequency applications may cause many unwanted problems such as shaft voltage and resultant bearing currents. The main objective of this research work is to analyse shaft voltage generation in a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) with a back to back converter. A detailed high frequency model of the proposed system has been developed based on capacitive couplings between different objects of the machine. The proposed model can be used for shaft voltage calculations and finding parameters which have key effect on shaft voltage and resultant bearing currents. A discussion about the presented technique for shaft voltage elimination in existing literature is also presented based on mathematical analysis and simulations.

This paper examines the application of a diode-clamped multilevel inverter (DCMLI)-based distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) connected to a three-phase, four-wire (3p4w) distribution system. The DCMLI has an inherent unbalancing problem among its DC capacitor voltages. Additionally, when the load contains a DC part, the neutral point of the compensator also becomes unbalanced. In this paper, the effects of different loading conditions on the DC capacitor voltages of the inverter are studied. Two new control circuits are proposed for equalizing the capacitor voltages. Different control techniques are presented for the equalizing circuits. Equations of the proposed equalizing controllers are developed corresponding to the control of the switching devices. Comparative studies of different control techniques and the performances of the two controllers are performed. Simulation studies are performed using PSCAD/EMTDC to validate the efficacy of the proposed equalizing controller circuits.

In this paper, the method of triangular carrier switching control of two-level inverters is extended to cascaded multilevel inverters using phase-shifted multicarrier unipolar pulsewidth modulation (PWM). The condition for smooth modulation is obtained using the Bessel's function representation of the PWM output and the switching condition of the multilevel-inverter-controlled system. A method is proposed for the determination of the minimum amplitude of the triangular carrier for smooth modulation at fixed switching frequency. It is shown that the multilevel modulation based on the phase-shifted carriers significantly reduces the ripple magnitude in the switching function and allows the use of a smaller carrier amplitude under closed loop. This increases the forward gain and, hence, improves the tracking characteristics. The proposed cascaded multilevel inverter control is implemented for the operation of a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) in the voltage control mode. The experimental verification of the theoretical and simulation results is provided through a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) based control of a laboratory model of a single-phase DSTATCOM.

Flying capacitor multilevel inverter (FCMLI) is a multiple voltage level inverter topology intended for high voltage and power operations with low distortion. It uses capacitors, called flying capacitors for clamping the voltage across the power semiconductor devices. In this paper, the implementation of a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) using an FCMLI is presented. A hysteresis current control technique for controlling the injected current by the FCMLI-based DSTATCOM is discussed. A new method for controlling the flying capacitor voltages is proposed which ensures that their voltages remain constant and at the same time maintain the desired current profile under the hysteresis current control operation. Simulation studies are performed using PSCAD/EMTDC to validate the efficacy of the control scheme and the FCMLI-based DSTATCOM

In this paper, load compensation techniques under unbalanced and distorted voltages have been discussed. Two kinds of compensation methods are considered. In the first category, synchronous detection and modified equal current strategies are used under the unbalanced but sinusoidal source voltages. In the second method, load compensation based on instantaneous symmetrical component theory with positive sequence extraction is proposed and is shown to work under unbalanced and the non-sinusoidal source voltages. To support the proposed method, a 440 V (L-L) three-phase, four-wire distribution system is considered. The compensator is realized using a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) operated in the current control mode. Detailed digital simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the approach. � 2006 IEEE.

Remote area microgrids (MG) can experience overloading or power deficiency throughout their dynamic operations due to load and generation uncertainties. Under such conditions, load-shedding is traditionally considered as the first successful mechanism to prevent system instability. To minimize load-shedding, islanded neighboring MGs can be connected to each other in remote areas to provide a self-healing capability. For this, extra generation capacity needs to be available in the distributed energy resources (DER) of one of the MGs to supply the extra demand in the other MG. In this way, the total load in the system of interconnected MGs will be shared by all the DERs within those MGs. This process falls within the network tertiary controller functions. Therefore, the tertiary controller should have a self-healing algorithm that needs to be carefully designed to initiate the command for interconnection of the MGs. The self-healing strategy needs to consider the required criteria to prevent system instability. The MGs will then be interconnected through an interconnecting static switch (ISS). This strategy also needs to decide when two interconnected MGs should be isolated. This paper focuses on the self-healing strategy, its criteria and features. The efficacy of the developed strategy in interconnecting and isolating the neighboring MGs is validated through PSCAD/EMTDC simulations.

This paper presents a new control approach to facilitate dynamic power sharing among parallel converter-interfaced distributed energy resources (DERs) in an islanded microgrid (MG). It is assumed that the power ratio is determined by the distribution network tertiary controller and passed to the primary controllers of each DER by the MG central controller. In this paper, an internal balancing inductance (IBI) is imposed to the system by the DER converter control which ensures the desired power ratio at the output of the DER converter and filter system. Stability analysis of the MG system is investigated with the proposed control approach. The proposed method defines the optimal IBI to guarantee the system stability and minimum error in the ratio of the output active and reactive power among the DERs. The discussions are validated for an islanded MG through PSCAD/EMTDC and MATLAB simulation studies.

Load-shedding is a mechanism to prevent overloading of an islanded microgrid (MG). To minimize load-shedding, extra support can be provided by interconnecting the overloaded MG to another islanded neighboring MG to support each other. For this, extra generation capacity needs to be available in the distributed energy resources of the neighboring MG. This paper proposes a decision making criterion for interconnection of two neighboring islanded MGs based on small signal stability analysis. The closed-loop control system of an MG is expressed in statespace domain and used for the stability analysis of the individual MGs as well as the system of coupled MGs. The results of this analysis are applied as a stability criterion to allow interconnection of two islanded MGs. Additionally, if it is revealed that interconnection of MGs will cause instability, the analysis yields the proper range for the droop control coefficients which need to be updated in the DERs, before they MGs are interconnected. MATLAB-based simulation studies are provided to evaluate the developed small signal stability analysis.

In this paper, the commonly used switching schemes for sliding mode control of power converters is analyzed and designed in the frequency domain. Particular application of a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) in voltage control mode is investigated in a power distribution system. Tsypkin's method and describing function is used to obtain the switching conditions for the two-level and three-level voltage source inverters. Magnitude conditions of carrier signals are developed for robust switching of the inverter under carrier-based modulation scheme of sliding mode control. The existence of border collision bifurcation is identified to avoid the complex switching states of the inverter. The load bus voltage of an unbalanced three-phase nonstiff radial distribution system is controlled using the proposed carrier-based design. The results are validated using PSCAD/EMTDC simulation studies and through a scaled laboratory model of DSTATCOM that is developed for experimental verification

A three-level hierarchical control system is considered for microgrids. The microgrid central controller receives the desired ratio for the output power of the available distributed generation units (DG) from the network tertiary controller. It then passes this information to the primary controller of each DG in the form of setpoints. In addition, the central controller receives some information from the DGs or the network and considers them to adjust the setpoints for the DGs. In this paper, the effect of the data transfer delays in the communication system of future microgrids is investigated on the dynamic operation of the distributed energy resources.

The flying capacitor multilevel inverter (FCMLI) is a multiple voltage level inverter topology intended for high-power and high-voltage operations at low distortion. It uses capacitors, called flying capacitors, to clamp the voltage across the power semiconductor devices. A method for controlling the FCMLI is proposed which ensures that the flying capacitor voltages remain nearly constant using the preferential charging and discharging of these capacitors. A static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) based on five-level flying capacitor inverters are proposed. Control schemes for both the FACTS controllers are developed and verified in terms of voltage control, power flow control, and power oscillation damping when installed in a single-machine infinite bus (SMIB) system. Simulation studies are performed using PSCAD/EMTDC to validate the efficacy of the control scheme and the FCMLI-based flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) controllers.

The paper discusses the operating principles and control characteristics of a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) that protects sensitive but unbalanced and/or distorted loads. The main aim of the DVR is to regulate the voltage at the load terminal irrespective of sag/swell, distortion, or unbalance in the supply voltage. In this paper, the DVR is operated in such a fashion that it does not supply or absorb any active power during the steady-state operation. Hence, a DC capacitor rather than a DC source can supply the voltage source inverter realizing the DVR. The proposed DVR operation is verified through extensive digital computer simulation studies.

The paper discusses load compensation using a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM). It is assumed that the DSTATCOM is associated with a load that is remote from the supply. It is shown that the operation of a DSTATCOM assuming that it is connected to a stiff source in such situations will result in distortions in source current and voltage at the point of common coupling. To avoid this, the DSTATCOM is connected in parallel with a filter capacitor that allows the high frequency component of the current to pass. However, this generates control issues in tracking, as standard controls such as a hysteresis control are not suitable in these circumstances. This paper proposes a new switching control scheme and demonstrates its suitability for this problem. It also proposes a scheme in which the fundamental sequence components of a three-phase signal can be computed from its samples. The overall performance of the proposed scheme is verified using digital computer simulation studies.

In this paper, a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC), along with a fixed capacitor, is used to avoid torsional mode instability in a series compensated transmission system. A 48-step harmonic neutralized inverter is used for the realization of the SSSC. The system under consideration is the IEEE first benchmark model on SSR analysis. The system stability is studied both through eigenvalue analysis and EMTDC/PSCAD simulation studies. It is shown that the combination of the SSSC and the fixed capacitor improves the synchronizing power coefficient. The presence of the fixed capacitor ensures increased damping of small signal oscillations. At higher levels of fixed capacitor compensation, a damping controller is required to stabilize the torsional modes of SSR.

This paper presents the operating principles of a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) that is used to maintain the voltage of a distribution bus. A three-phase, four-wire distribution system is assumed in this study. A three-phase bridge inverter circuit that is supplied by two neutral-clamped dc storage capacitors realizes the DSTATCOM. Three filter capacitors, one for each phase, are connected in parallel with the DSTATCOM to eliminate high-frequency switching components. The voltage across the filter capacitor is controlled by a dead-beat controller to maintain the ac bus voltage. The magnitude of the bus voltage is chosen as a nominal value, i.e., 1.0 per unit, while its phase angle is obtained through a feedback loop that maintains the voltage across the dc storage capacitors. Through detailed simulation and experimental results it has been shown that the DSTATCOM can maintain the voltage against any unbalance and distortion in either the load or supply side.

A dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) is a power-electronic controller that can protect sensitive loads from disturbances in the supply system. In this paper, it is demonstrated that this device can tightly regulate the voltage at the load terminal against imbalance or harmonic in the source side. The behavior of the device is studied through steady-state analysis, and limits to achievable performance are found. This analysis is extended to the study of transient operation where the generation of the reference voltage of the DVR is discussed. Once the reference signals are generated, they are tracked using a switching band scheme. A suitable structure in which the DVR is realized by voltage-source inverters (VSIs) is also discussed. Particular emphasis to the rating of this device is provided. Extensive simulation results are included to illustrate the operating principles of a DVR.

An integration of a Permanent Magnetic Synchronous Generator (PMSG) based Wind Energy ConversionSystem (WECS) into a microgrid is discussed in this paper. A back-to-back Voltage Source Converter (VSC) is employed for the power conversion from the PMSG to the AC grid. The Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) technique is adopted for the Wind-side Converter (WSC), while for the Gridside Converter (GSC), Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) is applied. A Maximum Power Point Track (MPPT) control scheme called the Optimal Power Control (OPC) is used for the WSC to draw the maximum power from wind energy. The DC voltage of the back-to-back converter is controlled by the GSC. The microgrid contains a microturbine and a diesel generator, along with loads. The power flow from the WECS to the microgrid is controlled through another back-to-back converter. Four different cases are studied to validate the performance of the WECS integration with the microgrid system.
