A vortex tube is a mechanical device which provides instant heating and cooling by separating the hot and cold streams via application of compressed working fluid to the orifice nozzles. Due to its energy separation capability researchers tend to make detailed investigations about vortex tubes recently. In order to make an investigation both numerical and experimental, the common accepted way of scientific researches is reviewing previous researches. Therefore, review studies play a vital role on new studies. In accordance with this phenomenon, this paper presents a comprehensive review about the parameters which affect the thermal performance of a RHVT such as working fluid, nozzle number, nozzle material, circuit connection type and cold mass fraction. In this paper, the effects of the orifice nozzle number and the inlet pressure on heating and cooling performance of a counter flow Ranque–Hilsch type vortex tube (RHVT) (L/D ration is 10) are investigated by using air and oxygen as a fluid via an experimental method. Five orifices with two, three, four, five and six nozzles are made from the polyamide plastic and aluminum. The object of this research is to observe thermal behavior of air and oxygen, which are passing through an RHVT. Using two different fluids for each one of the orifices (nozzle numbers), inlet pressure is varied between 150 kPa and 700 kPa by increasing 50 kPa for each step and comparison is made between these two fluids by holding the cold mass fraction constant at 0.36. We show that the temperature gradient between the cold and hot fluid decreases whenever the orifice nozzle number increases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, heating and cooling performances of two vortex tubes connected in parallel using different working fluids were compared. In experimental studies, oxygen, nitrogen, and air were used as working fluids in counterflow Ranque--Hilsch vortex tube (RHVT) and performance evaluation was performed. Nozzles made of polyamide and brass are used, and the number of these nozzles is 2, 4, and 6. Compressed working fluids were used to operate the vortex tube system at different inlet pressure values varying from 150 kPa to 600 kPa with 50 kPa increment. The geometric characteristics of the vortex tube are the length of the hot tube and the diameter of the orifice, which are 100 mm and 7 mm, respectively. Experiments were performed with the hot flow outlet valve fully open. The thermodynamic performance of the parallel connected vortex tube system was determined by performing exergy analysis. As a result of experimental studies, the highest performance of parallel connected RHVT system was obtained when nitrogen was used as a working fluid with brass-six-nozzle at 600 kPa. This study examines the performance analysis of two counter flow Ranquee–Hilsch Vortex Tubes (RHVT) having the same geometrical properties in the condition of serial and parallel connection. The performance of CO 2 as a working fluid in the vortex tube by using nozzles having 2,4 and 6 orifices, which were manufactured from polyamide and brass material has been experimentally investigated. Experimental studies were carried out by compressing CO 2 through the compressor to the vortex tube at pressures between 150 and 550 kPa. The most important physical property of a RHVT is the ratio of L/D which is equal to 14 in this study. In addition, by using the data obtained from experimental results, the second law efficiency was calculated for different working conditions of the systems by exergy analysis.
