The effect of shear on the ordering temperature of a triblock copolymer melt of polystyrene-polybutadiene-polystyrene (SBS) is examined by in situ small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Results obtained by SANS are compared to the rheologically determined order–disorder transition temperature, TRODT=115±5 °C. The SANS measurements from a Couette geometry shear cell are then used to construct a ‘‘dynamical phase diagram’’ based on characteristic changes in the scattering with temperature and shear rate, γ. A shear rate dependent ordering temperature, Tord(γ), is identified as the system is sheared isothermally from the disordered state. The scattering behavior is shown to be highly strain dependent. We compare our findings on the shear rate dependence of the ordering transition in triblock materials with previous observations on diblock copolymer materials and theoretical expectations for the shear rate dependence of the order–disorder transition temperature. A simple scaling argument leads to a good description of the shear rate dependence of Tord(γ) in both diblock and triblock copolymer measurements over the range of shear rates examined. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. This work studies how stepwise extension of various well-entangled polymer melts produce mechanical/ structural breakdowns during stress relaxation. Depending on how stepwise extension is imposed on five different styrene-butadiene random copolymers, two different forms of specimen failure are observed. When a step extension is produced with a low Hencky rate or to a low strain below some thresholds, the sample breaks up rather sharply after an appreciable period of induction during which the stress relaxes quiescently. After step extension, the sample draws and undergoes unsustainable necking due to shear yielding, if the step extension is produced with a Hencky rate higher than the Rouse relaxation rate and the magnitude is beyond a Hencky strain of 1.5. Moreover, introduction of long-chain branching suppresses the elastic breakup, postponing it to Hencky strains beyond 2.5. The clearly identifiable characteristics of the elastic yielding may be understood in terms of some speculative interpretations. In this paper, we describe the construction of a new neutron surface force confinement cell (NSFCC). The NSFCC is equipped with hydraulically powered in situ, temporally stable, force control system for simultaneous neutron reflectometry studies of nanoconfined complex fluid systems. Test measurements with deuterated toluene confined between two opposing diblock copolymer (polystyrene+poly 2-vinylpyridine) coated quartz substrates demonstrate the capabilities of the NSFCC. With increasing hydraulically applied force, a series of well-defined decreasing separations were observed from neutron reflectivity measurements. No noticeable changes in the hydraulic pressure used for controlling the surface separation were observed during the measurements, demonstrating the high stability of the apparatus. This newly designed NSFCC introduces a higher level of control for studies of confinement and consequent finite size effects on nanoscale structure in a variety of complex fluid and soft condensed matter systems. The poly(C60-co-styrene)s prepared by radical copolymerizations of C60 and styrene in bulk were characterized by multiple-detector size-exclusion chromatographs consisting of a refractometer, a differential viscometer, and/or a right-angle laser-light scattering photometer. The multidetector systems enabled the determinations of reliable, absolute molecular weights of the copolymers. The plots of intrinsic viscosity vs. molecular weight and radius of gyration vs. molecular weight offered valuable information about the molecular architectures of the copolymers. The slopes of the plots reveal that the structure of the copolymer changes with its C60 content: the copolymer with a low C60 content of 0.58 wt% possesses a linear structure, whereas its conger with a high C60 content of 1.14 wt% possesses a branched structure. Poly(acrylic acid-co-itaconic acid) copolymers containing pendent methacrylates were synthesized and used to formulate redox-initiated in situ cured glass-ionomer cements (GICs) by mixing with reactive glass fillers (Fuji II LC). Various formulations for the redox initiator were studied, and flexural strength (FS) was used as a screening tool for optimization. Effects of molecular weight (MW), grafting ratio, comonomer, polymer content in the liquid composition, powder/liquid (P/L) ratio, and aging on FS were investigated. The results show that the in situ cured GICs demonstrated higher FS (89.6–123.2 MPa), as compared to commercial Fuji II LC GIC (57.1 MPa). The optimal concentrations for redox initiators were found to be 0.15% (by weight) for K2S2O8 and 0.2% for ascorbic acid (or 0.6% for microencapsulated ascorbic acid), respectively. Effects of MW, grafting ratio, P/L ratio and polymer content in the liquid formulation were significant. During aging, the cement showed an increase in strength over 24 h and then no change for time periods up to six months. SEM analysis supports the strength data associated with the formulations. The exotherm and setting time suggest that novel redox-initiated resin-modified GICs hold promise as biocompatible and workable cement for orthopedic applications. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Vinyl-containing poly(acrylic acid-co-itaconic acid) copolymers were synthesized and used to formulate light-curable cements containing reactive glass fillers (Fuji II LC). The conditions for light curing were studied and optimized. Effects of molecular weight (MW), grafting ratio, comonomer, liquid composition, powder/liquid (P/L) ratio, glass powder and aging were evaluated. The results show that the vinyl-containing glass-ionomer cements (GICs) prepared in this study exhibit higher compressive strength (CS, 225.6 MPa), diametral tensile strength (DTS, 28.4 MPa) and much higher flexural strength (FS, 116.4 MPa), as compared to commercial Fuji II LC GIC (186.6 in CS, 19.1 in DTS and 57.1 in FS). The optimal light-exposure time was found to be around 10 min, and concentrations of CQ and DC were 0.5% (by weight) and 1.0%, respectively. Effects of MW, grafting ratio, P/L ratio and content of polymer in the liquid formulation were significant. The highest strengths were found for the optimal formulations where the MW was 15,000 (weight average), grafting ratio 25 mol%, P/L ratio 2.7 and liquid composition 50:20:30. During aging, the cement showed an increase of strength over the first week and then no change for a month. SEM analysis suggests that more integrated microstructures and smaller glass particles can lead to higher FS and higher polymer content in GICs leads to tough fracture surface and plastic deformation.
