Background: Erectile dysfunction (ED) stands out as one of the most prevalent sexual disorders in men, with its incidence progressively escalating with age. As delineated by the International Consultation Committee for Sexual Medicine on Definitions/Epidemiology/Risk Factors for Sexual Dysfunction, the prevalence of ED among men under 40 years is estimated to be within the range of 1-10%. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the concentration of bioelements (Zn, Cu, Fe, Cr, Mg, and Mn) in the serum and bone tissue and the concentration of selected hormones in men with and without erectile dysfunction. Materials and methods: The retrospective cohort study included 152 men who underwent total hip arthroplasty for hip osteoarthritis at the Department of Orthopaedic Traumatology and Musculoskeletal Oncology at the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. Certain exclusion criteria were applied to ensure the integrity of the study. These included individuals with diabetes, a history of cancer, alcohol abuse, liver or kidney failure, New York Heart Association (NYHA) class III or IV heart failure, and those taking medications that affect bone metabolism, such as mineral supplements, neuroleptics, chemotherapeutic agents, immunosuppressants, corticosteroids, or antidepressants. Patients with hypogonadism or infertility were excluded from the study. Results : The study showed an association between bioT concentrations and Cu concentrations in both patients with and without erectile dysfunction. A correlation between bioactive testosterone and Cr concentrations was also observed in both groups. Patients with erectile dysfunction showed a relationship between bioT concentration and Zn concentration, TT concentration and Mn concentration, FT concentration and Zn concentration, and E2 concentration and Cr concentration. An analysis of elemental concentrations in bone tissue showed an association between FT and Mg and Mn concentrations, but only in patients with erectile dysfunction. In patients without erectile dysfunction, a correlation was observed between FT and Cu concentrations. A correlation was also observed between bioT concentrations and Mg, Mn, and Zn concentrations, but only in patients with erectile dysfunction. In patients without erectile dysfunction, a correlation was observed between bioT and Cu concentrations. Conclusions : Studying the relationship between the concentration of bioelements (Zn, Cu, Fe, Cr, Mg, and Mn) in the serum and bone tissue and the concentration of selected hormones in men may be important in explaining the etiology of the problem. The study of the concentration of Zn and Cu in bone tissue and serum showed that these two elements, regardless of the place of accumulation, may be related to the concentration of androgens in men.

The liver and the biliary tree form the main excretory route of manganese (Mn) and copper (Cu). Cholestasis, can lead to the accumulation of these trace elements in the organism, resulting in toxicity to the basal ganglia of the central nervous system. The aim of our study was to reveal the influence of long-term cholestasis on the Mn and Cu levels in the blood of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). We recruited patients with PBC ( n  = 20) and PSC ( n  = 32). A control group ( n  = 40) was also set up. We also examined serum bile acid concentrations and liver enzyme activities. We did not observe any significant differences in any of these parameters between the PBC and PSC groups. The Mn and Cu levels in the PBC and PSC patients differed significantly from the that in the control group ( p  < 0.0001 and p  < .021, respectively). Patients in whom the laboratory cholestasis markers normalized during ursodeoxycholic acid treatment (18/52;35%) presented with significantly lower levels of Mn and Cu ( p  = .015 and p  = .012, respectively). Ten PSC patients showed normal levels of Mn and Cu six months after liver transplantation. Fine tremors, rigidity, dysarthria, and hypomimia were reported in nine (23%), eight (20%), four (10%), and eight (20%) patients, respectively. In addition to monitoring the cholestasis levels, liver function, and Mn and Cu levels during the long-term treatment of PBC and PSC patients, it is important to also regularly monitor the occurrence and development of extrapyramidal symptoms of Parkinson's-like syndromes.

Objectives: The objective of the present study was to assess trace element status in morbidly obese subjects before and one year after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) in order to identify possible deficiencies., Methods: The study population included 46 patients in the age range 27-59 years, the majority (85 %) were women. The enrolled patients attended an eight week course on lifestyle changes before bariatric surgery. After RYGB they were recommended daily micronutrient supplements with a commonly used multivitamin-mineral tablet in addition to intramuscular vitamin B 12 injections (1 mg) every third month for 12 months. Whole blood concentrations of Cu, Mn, Se and Zn were determined using high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry., Results: During the 12 months follow up after bariatric surgery, the patients had lost mean 32.3 kg and median whole blood concentrations of Cu (-16 %) were reduced, Mn (+14 %) and Zn (+6%) were increased, while the Se values were essentially unchanged. Compared with reference ranges, median postoperative concentrations of all essential trace elements were either below (Zn) or in the lower reference range (Cu, Mn, Se)., Conclusion: Essential trace elements were below or in the lower reference range twelve months after RYGB. Our results indicate a need for updated guidelines in Nordic countries for trace metal monitoring and supplements in patients after bariatric surgery, especially when gastric bypass surgery is used. Background: The objective of this pilot study was to assess iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and manganese (Mn) status (hair, serum, and urine) and speciation (serum) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients., Methods: A pilot study involving a total of 27 subjects (13 PD patients, 14 controls) was performed. Serum, urine, and hair metal content was assessed using ICP-MS. Speciation analysis of Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn was performed using a hybrid HPLC-ICP-MS system., Results: Group comparisons did not reveal any significant group difference in serum Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn total metal level between PD patients and controls. Speciation analysis revealed a significant decrease in Cu/ceruloplasmin copper in association with elevation of low-molecular weight species (amino acids)-bound copper. It is proposed that in PD, binding of Cu(II) ions to ceruloplasmin is reduced and free copper ions coordinate with low molecular weight ligands. The level of Mn-albumin complexes in PD patients was more than 4-fold higher as compared to the respective value in the control group. The observed difference may be considered as a marker of redistribution between high and low molecular weight ligands., Conclusions: Metal speciation is significantly affected in serum of PD-patients. These findings are indicative of the potential role of metal metabolism and PD pathogenesis, although the exact mechanisms of such associations require further detailed studies., (Copyright © 2019. This study was aimed to determine reference values (RVs) for the manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and selenium (Se) in the whole blood (B) and serum (S) samples of the Serbian population. Blood specimens were collected from healthy persons (n = 295; women/men ratio = 149/146; mean age: 42 ± 2 years). The RVs were calculated as lower limit (LL) and upper limit (UL) of the 95% confidence interval (CI) and were expressed as percentiles (P) in the range from P2.5 to P97.5. The influences of sex, age, and smoking habits on element profiles were considered. It was found that the contents of B-Cu and S-Cu were higher in women, while the contents of B-Zn and S-Zn were higher in men. Both trace elements were significantly increased in a group of persons above 40 when compared to a younger persons (≤ 40 years). According to smoking habits, increased content was found only for S-Mn in the nonsmoker's group (p < 0.05). Comparing our results to the results reported in other population groups worldwide, the Serbian population had significantly reduced content of Se in both types of samples. This finding could highlight the deficiency of Se in the investigated Serbian population and could contribute to the better understanding of the molecular basis for the increased incidence of thyroid and other diseases in which selenium plays a key role.

Background: Iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and manganese (Mn) play a significant role in female reproduction and fetal development. At the same time, high levels of metals may exert toxic effects. Correspondingly, both excess and deficiency of essential trace elements were shown to be associated with female infertility and adverse pregnancy outcome, although the existing data are rather contradictory. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to reveal the potential role of altered iron, copper, and manganese status in female reproductive health problems through assessment of serum metal levels in healthy non-pregnant and pregnant women, as well as patients with miscarriage and primary infertility., Methods: A total of 150 healthy controls, 169 pregnant women (II trimester of pregnancy), 75 women with miscarriage, and 91 patients with primary infertility were enrolled. Serum metal levels were assessed using ICP-MS., Results: Pregnant women are characterized by a significant increase in serum Cu an Mn levels by 40% (p < 0.001) and 16% (p = 0.043) as compared to the controls, respectively. Serum Cu levels in women with miscarriage and infertility were 30% and 35% lower than those in pregnant women (p < 0.001). No significant difference in serum iron levels were observed between the control and pregnant women. Women who had miscarriage were characterized by 13% (p = 0.042) higher serum Fe levels as compared to the pregnant ones. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that serum copper levels was significantly associated both with pregnancy (β = 0.436; p < 0.001) and reproductive health problems in women (β = -0.272; p < 0.001). The latter was improved significant after adjustment for serum Fe and Mn levels, age, and BMI (β = -0.431; p < 0.001). The model incorporating serum Cu, Fe, Mn, and anthropometric parameters accounted for 23% of variability in reproductive status (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: It is proposed that the lack of pregnancy-associated increase in metal levels in miscarriage and infertility may be indicative of at least partial role of metal insufficiency in impaired pregnancy and reproductive function in general. The current information about the effect of physical exercise on the body concentrations of several minerals is still limited, both in the acute (short-term) and adaptive (long-term) responses. So, this manuscript aims, on the one hand, to assess the possible differences on basal levels of cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), and manganese (Mn) concentrations in serum and urine between athletes and sedentary participants and, on the other hand, to evaluate the effect of an acute progressive physical exercise until voluntary exhaustion on the serum and urinary concentrations of Co, Cu, and Mn. Two groups participated in this survey, one was formed by untrained, sedentary males (CG; n = 26), and the other group was constituted by national endurance (long and middle distances) athletes (AG; n = 21). All participants were from the same region of Spain. Participants of both groups performed a physical test on a treadmill, reaching voluntary exhaustion. Blood and urine samples of each participant were collected before and at after the tests. Once obtained and processed, the concentrations of Co, Cu, and Mn elements were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The differences in the studied variables were evaluated using a mixed model by means of an ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc tests. In the comparison of the pre-test values between groups, the results showed that serum concentrations of Mn were significantly lower in CG than in AG (p < 0.01). In urine, Co and Mn levels were significantly higher among CG participants (p < 0.01) than among AG ones, while in the case of Cu, the values were lower (p < 0.01) in the CG than in the AG. Regarding the effects of the effort tests, no significant changes were found among the participants of the CG. It was observed that the serum concentrations of Co (p < 0.05) and Cu (p < 0.01) decreased after the test among the AG participants. Also, the results showed that there were no statistical differences in Co and Mn values (expressed in μg/g creatinine). However, the urinary post-test Cu concentrations were lower (p < 0.05) among AG participants. In basal conditions, serum concentrations of Mn were significantly lower in CG than in AG. In urine, Co and Mn levels were significantly higher among CG participants and Cu level was significantly lower in CG, a fact which may reflect adaptive responses to exercise. An incremental exercise to exhaustion in AG produces a decrease in Co and Cu serum concentrations, as well as in urinary excretion of Cu.

The aim of this paper was to review recent literature (from 2000 onwards) and summarize the newest findings on fluctuations in the concentration of some essential macro- and microelements in those patients with a history of chronic alcohol abuse. The focus was mainly on four elements which the authors found of particular interest: Iron, magnesium, copper, and manganese. After independently reviewing over 50 articles, the results were consistent with regard to iron and magnesium. On the other hand, data were limited, and in some cases contradictory, as far as copper and manganese were concerned. Iron overload and magnesium deficiency are two common results of an excessive and prolonged consumption of alcohol. An increase in the levels of iron can be seen both in the serum and within the cells, hepatocytes in particular. This is due to a number of factors: Increased ferritin levels, lower hepcidin levels, as well as some fluctuations in the concentration of the TfR receptor for transferrin, among others. Hypomagnesemia is universally observed among those suffering from alcoholism. Again, the causes for this are numerous and include malnutrition, drug abuse, respiratory alkalosis, and gastrointestinal problems, apart from the direct influence of excessive alcohol intake. Unfortunately, studies regarding the levels of both copper and manganese in the case of (alcoholic) liver disease are scarce and often contradictory. Still, the authors have attempted to summarize and give a thorough insight into the literature available, bearing in mind the difficulties involved in the studies. Frequent comorbidities and mutual relationships between the elements in question are just some of the complications in the study of this topic.

We measured serum concentrations of trace elements and evaluated their clinical significance in relation to treatment outcomes of critically ill patients. A total of 167 participants (105 men and 62 women; average age, 61.4 years; age range, 18-90 years) were enrolled. Arterial blood concentrations of the trace elements zinc, copper, selenium, and manganese were measured every 14 days. At the time of intensive care unit (ICU) admission, serum concentrations of zinc, selenium, copper, and manganese were lower than the normal values in 75.1, 1.8, 37.8, and 2.1% of patients, respectively. Serum trace element concentrations measured on day 14 of ICU stay were higher than those measured at the time of ICU admission for zinc (53.3 → 80.7 μg/L) and copper (87.1 → 102.3 μg/L). Increased serum zinc and copper concentrations during ICU care were associated with a significantly lower mortality compared to decreased concentrations of zinc (15.6 vs. 83.3%, p = 0.003) and copper (5.6 vs. 50.0%, p = 0.013). At the time of ICU admission, low serum levels of zinc and copper were observed. Patients with increased serum concentrations of zinc and copper had significantly lower mortality.

Disturbed redox status may be critical to lung cancerogenesis, however little research has been conducted on general changes in total redox status in lung cancer. Levels and activities of antioxidants, especially enzymatic ones, are related to trace element concentration. Trace element status is often disturbed in cancers, however no studies concerning the association between redox and trace element status have been performed for lung cancer. We hypothesized that disturbed redox status in lung cancer patients is partially determined by trace elements while their distribution amongst blood compartments may differ compared to healthy subjects. Blood samples from lung cancer patients (n=44) and control subjects (n=44) were collected to assess redox and trace element status. Serum and whole blood Cu and Mn levels were determined with GF-AAS, and Zn-with F-AAS. In serum the total antioxidant status (TAS) was determined with the commercial kit TAS (Randox, UK), total oxidant status (TOS) was determined based on the method developed by Erel and the oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated. Total protein (T-Prot), albumin (Alb), uric acid (UA) and total bilirubin (T-Bil) concentrations were measured with an auto-analyser (Konelab 20i, Thermoscientific, USA), SOD and CAT activity - with commercially available kits (Cayman, USA). The level of TAS, T-Prot, Alb, T-Bil, the activity of SOD, the concentration of whole blood Mn as well as serum and whole blood Zn were lower while TOS, OSI, serum Cu levels and serum Cu:Zn ratios were higher in lung cancer patients compared to the control group. In the lung cancer group TAS correlated positively with Alb and UA, serum Zn and negatively with whole blood Mn. Additionally, SOD positively correlated with the whole blood Mn and Cu:Zn ratio, while CAT - negatively with the whole blood Cu:Zn ratio. In the lung cancer sub-group at clinical stage I-II, TOS additionally negatively correlated with whole blood Zn, and CAT negatively with serum Cu and Cu:Zn ratio. In advanced lung cancer, we found a positive correlation between TAS and serum Zn, and a negative one - with serum Cu:Zn ratio. We observed a similar correlation between endogenous non-enzymatic antioxidants and TAS in the control group, however considerably fewer correlations between trace elements and antioxidants were observed. This study supports the hypothesis that disturbed redox status in lung cancer patients is linked with alterations in trace element status regarding Zn, Mn and Cu. The purpose of the present study was the assessment of the serum concentration of antioxidant microelements-zinc, copper, selenium, manganese, and Cu/Zn ratio in children and adolescents with myopia. Eighty-three children were examined (mean age 14.36 ± 2.49 years) with myopia. The control group was 38 persons (mean age 12.89 ± 3.84 years). Each patient had complete eye examination. The serum concentration of zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Cu/Zn ratio, which is the indicator of the oxidative stress, was also calculated. The average serum concentration of zinc in myopic patients was significantly lower (0.865 ± 0.221 mg L -1 ) in comparison to the control group (1.054 ± 0.174 mg L -1 ). There was significantly higher Cu/Zn ratio in myopic patients (1.196 ± 0.452) in comparison to that in the control group (0.992 ± 0.203). The average serum concentration of selenium in the study group was significantly lower (40.23 ± 12.07 μg L -1 ) compared with that in the control group (46.00 ± 12.25 μg L -1 ). There were no essential differences between serum concentration of copper and manganese in the study group and the control group. Low serum concentration of zinc and selenium in myopic children may imply an association between insufficiency of these antioxidant microelements and the development of the myopia and could be the indication for zinc and selenium supplementation in the prevention of myopia. Significantly, higher Cu/Zn ratio in the study group can suggest the relationship between myopia and oxidative stress.

Some medications may change trace element levels in the body. Extracts of various plants, due to having the several elements, can have beneficial effects. Consumption of herbal extracts with chemical drugs may reduce adverse effects of medication. The goal of this study was to evaluate copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and manganese (Mn) concentrations in serum of rats treated with tamoxifen, chicory, and/or milk thistle extracts. Therefore, 36 adult female Wistar rats were divided into six groups: normal control, chicory control, milk thistle control, tamoxifen, tamoxifen-chicory, and tamoxifen-milk thistle. At the end of the study, the blood samples were collected and sera isolated by centrifugation and analyzed by the atomic absorption spectrophotometry for Cu, Zn, and Mn levels. The Zn concentration increased in milk thistle-supplemented groups. The Cu level increased in the chicory control group only. Tamoxifen had no affect on Cu, Zn, and Mn levels, but seed extract of milk thistle increased Zn concentration, and chicory root extract increased Cu concentration. Although elevated levels of Cu in rats receiving tamoxifen-chicory were milder than rats treated only with chicory, it seems that the extract and tamoxifen impact on the Cu are in conflict with each other.

In the present study, the effects of dietary supplementation of organic and inorganic Mn, Zn, Cu, and Cr mixtures using two different levels (80, 60, 5, and 0.15 mg/kg and 40, 30, 2.5, and 0.07 mg/kg, respectively) on the bioavailability of these trace minerals and Ca in late-phase laying hens were evaluated. Three hundred and sixty laying hens (Barred Rock) at 50 weeks of age were used, and the duration of study was 16 weeks. Each of the four dietary regimes was randomly assigned to six replicates, which included 15 hens each. Organic trace minerals were provided as methionine chelates; inorganic Mn, Zn, and Cr were provided as oxides; and Cu was provided as sulfate. The organic form significantly increased the concentrations of serum Mn, Zn, Cu, and Ca; egg Mn, Zn, Cu, and Cr; and eggshell Zn and Cr compared with the inorganic form. However, the form of trace minerals did not affect the concentrations of serum Cr and eggshell Mn, Cu, and Ca. High-level addition of trace minerals significantly increased serum Mn and Zn; egg Mn, Zn, Cu, and Cr; and eggshell Mn, Zn, and Cu concentrations compared with low-level addition but did not affect serum Cu, Cr, and Ca or eggshell Cr and Ca concentrations. While the organic form reduced the excretion of Mn, Zn, Cu, Cr, and Ca, the high-level supplement increased Mn, Zn, and Cu excretion. The addition level did not affect Cr and Ca excretion. These results demonstrate that dietary supplementation of an organic Mn, Zn, Cu, and Cr mixture increases the bioavailability of Mn, Zn, Cu, Cr, and Ca compared with inorganic sources and that a lower level of trace mineral supplementation results in lower mineral excretion, particularly in an organic form.

The essential role of transferrin in mammalian iron metabolism is firmly established. Integral to our understanding of transferrin, studies in hypotransferrinemic mice, a model of inherited transferrin deficiency, have demonstrated that transferrin is essential for iron delivery for erythropoiesis and in the regulation of expression of hepcidin, a hormone that inhibits macrophage and enterocyte iron efflux. Here we investigate a potential role for transferrin in the distribution of three other physiologic metals, manganese, copper, and zinc. We first assessed metal content in transferrin-rich fractions of wild-type mouse sera and demonstrate that although both iron and manganese cofractionated predominantly with transferrin, the absolute levels of manganese are several orders of magnitude lower than those of iron. We next measured metal content in multiple tissues in wild-type and hypotransferrinemic mice of various ages. Tissue metal imbalances were severe for iron and minimal to moderate for some metals in some tissues in hypotransferrinemic mice. Metal levels measured in a transferrin-replete yet hepcidin-deficient and iron-loaded mouse strain suggested that the observed imbalances in tissue copper, zinc, and manganese levels were not all specific to hypotransferrinemic mice or caused directly by transferrin deficiency. Overall, our results suggest that transferrin does not have a primary role in the distribution of manganese, copper, or zinc to tissues and that the abnormalities observed in tissue manganese levels are not attributable to a direct role for transferrin in manganese metabolism but rather are attributable to an indirect effect of transferrin deficiency on hepcidin expression and/or iron metabolism.

To examine the effects of dietary S on diet digestibility and apparent mineral absorption and retention, 16 steers [8 ruminally fistulated (368 ± 12 kg BW) and 8 unmodified (388 ± 10 kg BW)] were paired within modification status and BW, and within each of the 2 consecutive 28-d periods, 4 pairs of steers were randomly assigned to either a low-S (0.24%) or high-S (0.68%) pelleted diet. Bromegrass hay was fed at 5 or 7% of the diet, during periods 1 and 2, respectively. Sodium sulfate was used to increase the S content of the high-S diet. The low-S steers were fed the amount of feed their high-S counterpart consumed the previous day, while the high-S steers received 110% of the previous day's intake. Steers were adapted to individual metabolism stalls for 4 d (d -3 to 0 of period), acclimated to diet for 7 d (d 1 to 7 of period), and after high-S steers were consuming ad libitum intake for 7 d (d 14 of period), total urine and feces were collected for 5 d. Feed intake and orts were recorded daily. Dry matter and OM digestibility were determined. Jugular blood was collected before and after each collection period on d 14 and 20, and liver biopsies were collected on d 0 and 27. Macromineral (Ca, K, Mg, and Na) and micromineral (Cu, Mn, and Zn) concentrations were determined for pellets and hay, orts, feces, urine, and plasma and liver samples from each steer via inductively coupled plasma spectrometry. Dry matter intake, DM and OM digestibility, and urine volume were not affected (P ≥ 0.11) by dietary treatment, but fecal output was greater (P = 0.02) in the low-S steers than the high-S steers. A high-S diet decreased plasma Cu (P = 0.04) and liver Zn (P = 0.03) compared to low-S steers. No differences (P ≥ 0.20) were noted among urinary excretion of Cu, Mn, and Zn. Sodium absorption was greater (P < 0.01) and Cu, Mn, and Zn retention was lesser (P ≤ 0.01) in the high-S steers than the low-S steers. Apparent absorption of Ca, K, and Mg was not affected (P ≥ 0.18) by dietary treatment, while absorption of Cu, Mn, and Zn in the high-S treatment was lesser (P ≤ 0.06). In conclusion, consumption of a high-S diet for 28 d had limited effects on Ca, K, Mg, and Na absorption and retention, but decreased Cu, Mn, and Zn retention, which may limit growth and production of cattle consuming a high-S diet long-term.

Preeclampsia complicates 2-8% of all pregnancies and is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality and pre-term delivery in world. In concern to the increasing number of preeclamptic cases and lack of data about the interrelation between levels of trace elements and preeclampsia, we conducted a hospital based case-control study to assess the risk of preeclampsia in relation to concentrations of trace elements like copper, manganese and zinc in a hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The study consisted of 120 pregnant women divided into three groups of 40 each--control, HR group and the PET group. The serum levels of Cu, Mn and Zn were estimated by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Analysis of trace elements revealed that mean values of Cu, Mn and Zn were 2.01±0.43, 0.125±0.07 and 1.30±0.83 mg/L respectively in control. In preeclamptic group, the mean values of Cu, Mn and Zn were 1.554±0.53, 0.072±0.06 and 0.67±0.59 mg/L respectively. Levels of Cu and Zn were found to decrease significantly (P<0.001) in preeclamptic group compared to control. Pearsons correlation analysis revealed a positive correlation between levels of Cu, Mn and Zn and systolic blood pressure. However the correlation of Cu, Mn and Zn with maternal age, gestational age, BMI, systolic and diastolic blood pressure was statistically insignificant. In conclusion, our study suggests that preeclamptic patients have considerably lower levels of Cu, Mn and Zn compared to control and reduction in serum levels of copper, manganese, and zinc during pregnancy might be possible contributors in etiology of preeclampsia.

The aim of this study is to measure the alterations in the trace levels of serum copper (Cu), selenium (Se), and manganese (Mn) in forestry workers testing immunoglobulin G (IgG)-positive for Brucella, Borrelia, and Rickettsia. The study was conducted on a sample of 758 subjects (560 male and 198 female). All the subjects underwent medical examinations, which investigated particularly the presence of clinical signs compatible with zoonoses, and routine blood tests from venous blood sample, which tested previous immunisation versus cited microorganisms and serum concentration of Cu, Se, and Mn. The subjects were divided according to IgG positivity versus the cited microorganisms. The group of subjects with IgG positive versus Brucella showed statistically significant higher Cu levels than controls, while the Mn levels were not; the group of subjects with IgG positive versus Rickettsia showed higher levels of all three tested metals. The concentration of the examined metals did not show statistically significant difference between IgG-positive subjects versus subjects with Borrelia compared to controls. These data could confirm the role of both Cu and Se  in the regulation of immune response.

Preeclampsia complicates 2-8 % of all pregnancies and it is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality and pre-term delivery in the world. Unfortunately, there is scarcity of document discussing the circulating level of several essential trace elements in preeclampsia patients in Bangladesh. The present study was designed to evaluate the serum concentration of four trace elements, namely zinc, copper, manganese, and iron, in preeclamptic pregnant women. The study was conducted as a case-control study with 50 preeclamptic pregnant women as cases and 58 normotensive pregnant women as controls. Obstetric, anthropometric, and clinical data were collected at routine obstetric visits. Serum trace elements were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Independent sample t test and Pearson's correlation test were done for the statistical analysis using the statistical software package SPSS, version 16.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL). We observed significant differences for gestational age, body mass index, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure between patient and control groups (p < 0.05). Analysis of serum trace elements explored significantly lower level of all the four elements in preeclampsia patients in comparison to the control group (p < 0.05). Pearson's correlation analysis explored that the correlation between serum level of different trace elements was statistically insignificant (p > 0.05) except the correlation between zinc and iron in preeclampsia patients (p < 0.05). Establishment of inter-element relationship strongly supports that there was a disturbance in the element homeostasis in patient with preeclampsia. In conclusion, our study suggests that preeclampsia patients have considerably lower level of serum zinc, copper, manganese, and iron compared to the healthy pregnant women.

The purpose of the study was to determine the concentration of serum trace and other essential elements of generalized anxiety disorder patients and to find out the relationship between element levels and nutritional status or socioeconomic factors. The study was conducted among 50 generalized anxiety disorder patients and 51 healthy volunteers. Patients were selected and recruited in the study with the help of a clinical psychologist by random sampling. The concentrations of serum trace elements (Zn, Cu, Mn, and Fe) and other two essential elements (Ca and Mg) were determined by graphite furnace and flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Data were analyzed by independent t test, Pearson's correlation analysis, regression analysis, and analysis of variance. The serum concentrations of Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Ca, and Mg in generalized anxiety disorder patients were 1.069 ± 0.40, 1.738 ± 0.544, 1.374 ± 0.750, 3.203 ± 2.065, 108.65 ± 54.455, and 21 ± 4.055 mg/L, while those were 1.292 ± 0.621, 0.972 ± 0.427, 0.704 ± 0.527, 1.605 ± 1.1855, 101.849 ± 17.713, and 21.521 ± 3.659 mg/L in control subjects. Significantly decreased (p < 0.05) serum Zn concentration was found in the patient group compared to the control group while serum level of Cu, Mn, and Fe was significantly (p < 0.05) higher, but the differences of the concentration of Ca and Mg between the patient and control groups were not significant (p > 0.05). Socioeconomic data revealed that most of the patients were in the lower middle class group and middle-aged. Mean BMI of the control group (23.63 ± 3.91 kg/m(2)) and the patient group (23.62 ± 3.77 kg/m(2)) was within the normal range (18.5-25.0 kg/m(2)). The data obtained from different interelement relations in the generalized anxiety disorder patients and control group strongly suggest that there is a disturbance in the element homeostasis. So changes in the serum trace element level in generalized anxiety disorder patients occur independently and they may provide a prognostic tool for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the status of serum trace elements: zinc, copper, manganese, iron, calcium, and magnesium concentrations in obsessive-compulsive disorder patients. Forty-eight obsessive-compulsive disorder patients and 48 healthy volunteers were included in this study. Patients were recruited from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University by random sampling. Serum trace element concentrations were determined using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (for zinc, copper, iron, calcium, and magnesium) as well as graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (for manganese). Data were analyzed using independent t test, Pearson's correlation analysis, regression analysis, and ANOVA. Statistical analysis of these data showed a definite pattern of variation among certain elements in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder compared to controls. In patients' serum, zinc, iron, and magnesium concentrations decreased significantly (p<0.05) compared to the controls. Serum manganese and calcium concentrations were significantly higher (p<0.05) in patients compared to the controls. These data showed a definite imbalance in the interelement relations in obsessive-compulsive disorder patients compared to controls and therefore suggest a disturbance in the element homeostasis.

Both manganese and copper may affect bone synthesis. Bone content of both metals can be altered in alcoholics, although controversy exists regarding this matter. To analyse the relative and combined effects of ethanol and a low protein diet on bone copper and manganese, and their relationships with bone structure and metabolism, including trabecular bone mass (TBM), osteoid area (OA), osteocalcin (OCN), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), parathyroid hormone (PTH), urinary hydroxyproline (uHP) and vitamin D. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups. The control rats received a 18% protein-containing diet; a second group, an isocaloric, 2% protein-containing diet; a third one, an isocaloric, 36% ethanol-containing diet and a fourth, an isocaloric diet containing 2% protein and 36% ethanol. After sacrifice, TBM and OA were histomorphometrically assessed; bone and serum manganese and copper were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and serum OCN, IGF-1, PTH, uHP and vitamin D by radioimmunoassay. Ethanol-fed rats showed decreased TBM and bone manganese. Significant relationships existed between bone manganese and TBM, serum IGF-1 and OCN. Ethanol leads to a decrease in bone manganese, related to decreased bone mass and bone synthesis. No alterations were found in bone copper.

The reference ranges for blood Cu, Mn, Se and Zn of 215 adult subjects non-occupationally exposed and living in the Nuoro province (Sardinia, insular Italy) were assessed. Metals were determined by sector field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry after microwave-assisted acid digestion of blood. The blood reference ranges estimated as P5-P95 percentiles (geometric mean, GM) were 776-1495μg/L (1036μg/L) for Cu; 4.73-17.0μg/L (8.91μg/L) for Mn; 106-185μg/L (140μg/L) for Se and 4686-8585μg/L (6418μg/L) for Zn. These results were then stratified for sex, age, alcohol consumption, smoking habit and living area. The GM value of Cu was significantly higher in females (1127μg/L) than in males (957μg/L). Age, alcohol intake, smoking habit and residential area did not influence blood Cu. The GM of Mn was significantly higher in females (9.98μg/L) respect to males (8.01μg/L) and in drinkers (9.67μg/L) compared to non-drinkers (8.38μg/L). The other variables did not change the Mn data. Selenium concentrations did not differ significantly as a function of individuals factors. With reference to Zn, males had GM of 6804μg/L and females of 6031μg/L, and more blood Zn was found in subjects consuming alcohol (6618μg/L) respect to abstainers (6155μg/L). The purpose of the study was to determine the serum concentration of trace elements of panic disorder patients and to find out the relationship between trace element levels and nutritional status or socio-economic factors. The study was conducted among 54 panic disorder patients and 52 healthy volunteers. Patients were recruited from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University by random sampling. Serum trace element concentrations were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (for Mg, Zn, Ca, and Cu) as well as graphite furnace (for Mn). Data were analyzed by independent t test, Pearson's correlation analysis, regression analysis, and ANOVA. The serum concentration of Mn, Zn, Ca, Cu, and Mg in panic disorder patients were 0.37 +/- 0.30, 0.67 +/- 0.20, 99.91 +/- 15.15, 0.83 +/- 0.23, and 21.14 +/- 3.72 mg/L, while those were 0.4163 +/- 0.2527, 0.86 +/- 0.3, 106.6073 +/- 18.6531, 0.8514 +/- 0.3646, and 21.37 +/- 2.03 mg/L in control subjects, respectively. The serum concentration of Zn decreased significantly (p = 0.001) in patient group. But the differences of the concentration of Mn, Ca, Cu, and Mg between patient and control group were not significant (p = 0.522, p = 0.065, p = 0.800, and p = 0.712, respectively). Socio-economic data reveal that most of the patients were very poor and middle aged. Mean BMIs of the control group (23.74 +/- 2.71 kg/m(2)) and the patient group (22.62 +/- 3.74 kg/m(2)) were within the normal range (18.5-25.0 kg/m(2)). There was no significant relationship between serum zinc level and BMI of patients (r = 0.038; p = 0.809). So the decreased level of serum zinc in panic disorder patients was not because of other reasons, but rather it may provide a prognostic tool for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

In was defined that 2-week intake by senior school pupils of iron-containing supplements combined with an ascorbic acid was followed by a significant increase of iron concentration in plasma and formal blood elements, hemoglobin and erythrocytes level, increase of vitamin C provision and physical performance efficiency at simultaneous decrease of copper and manganese content in blood plasma.

Introduction: There has been a resurgence of interest in studies concerning the role of elements in the development and maintenance of the skeleton. The aim of the study was to assess the plasma and red blood concentrations of some elements in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis., Materials and Methods: Seventy-seven postmenopausal women with osteoporosis aged 61 years (median interquartile range, 7.5; range, 46 to 74) and 61 age- and BMI-matched healthy postmenopausal women aged 60 years (median interquartile range, 8.0; range, 44 to 76) were included in the study. Element concentrations in plasma and red blood cells including magnesium (Mg), zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in both postmenopausal women with osteoporosis and healthy postmenopausal women., Results: Only statistically significant difference between the osteoporotic (51.51 [15.40] microg/mL) and healthy subjects (54.54 [15.42] microg/mL) was observed in red blood cell (RBC) magnesium concentration (Z=-2.07, P=0.039). However, no significant difference was found between patient and control groups, both in plasma and in red blood concentrations, for zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium., Conclusion: Mg levels in red blood cells are significantly lower in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. It is concluded that Mg transport mechanism(s) into the cell could be affected in patients with osteoporosis.

Many institutions reduce or eliminate copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn) in parenteral nutrition (PN) solutions when cholestasis develops. Little data exist to support this practice. Fifty-four subjects with known serum Cu, whole-blood Mn, and serum-conjugated bilirubin levels were evaluated in this prospective, observational study. Subjects ranged in weight from 760 g to 65.2 kg. Subjects weighing <25 kg received a daily parenteral dose of 20 microg/kg Cu and 5 microg/kg Mn. Subjects weighing > or =25 kg received a dose of 500 microg/d Cu and 150 microg/d Mn. Cholestasis was defined as a conjugated bilirubin level > or =2 mg/dL. Of the 54 subjects, 20 had cholestasis. Fifteen patients had elevated Cu levels, and 21 had high Mn levels. Seven of the subjects had both high Cu and high Mn levels. The regression model comparing cholestasis as a predictor of high, low, or normal Cu level was not significant (P = .9588). Cholestasis was not a significant predictor of high, low, or normal Mn levels (P = .6533). No correlation between Cu and Mn levels was found. The authors found no significant relationship between conjugated serum bilirubin levels > or =2.0 mg/dL, serum Cu, and whole-blood Mn levels. They found insufficient evidence to support the practice of dosing Mn from a Cu level or vice versa. They recommend obtaining Cu and Mn levels on all pediatric patients who develop cholestasis prior to adjusting parenteral doses and at regular intervals for all long-term PN patients.

Objective: To investigate the possible correlation between hepatic flapping tremors and serum manganese Mn, iron Fe, zinc Zn, and copper Cu., Methods: This case control study was carried out in Assiut University Hospital, Assiut, Egypt from June 2006 to June 2007. It included 100 patients with liver cirrhosis, 78 had flapping tremor, and 22 had not, and 60 healthy controls. All patients were subjected to assessment of serum Mn, total Fe, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), Zn, and Cu. Assessment of hepatic encephalopathy was carried out using a battery of cognitive function tests. All patients had electroencephalography and MRI of the brain., Results: Compared to healthy controls, patients showed increase in Mn (p<0.0001), Cu (p<0.05) and decrease in TIBC (p<0.000), Zn (p<0.05). Eighty-two percent of patients had minimal hepatic encephalopathy (mHE). In 85%, MRI-brain showed bilateral hyperintense substantia nigra and globus pallidus on T1-weighted images. A significant positive correlation was present between tremors and severity of liver dysfunction, mHE and serum Cu, and negative correlation with total Fe, TIBC, and Zn., Conclusion: Altered homeostasis of Mn and other minerals could be responsible for the pathophysiology of cognitive deficits associated with liver cirrhosis, but not with flapping tremors. The exact pathogenic role and possibilities for therapeutic implications need further study.

Human saliva offers a unique noninvasive approach for populational study. Purposes of this study were to investigate the feasibility of using saliva manganese (Mn) concentration as a biomarker of Mn exposure among career welders and to study the variations of Mn, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in saliva as affected by the welding profession. Forty-nine male welders, of whom 28 were in the low exposed group and 21 in the high exposed group, were recruited. Control subjects were 33 military soldiers without metal exposure. Ambient Mn levels in breathing zones were 0.01, 0.24 and 2.21mg/m(3) for control, low, and high exposed groups, respectively. Saliva samples were collected to quantify metals by inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Saliva concentrations of Mn and Cu were significantly higher in welders than in controls (p<0.01); the variation in saliva levels appeared likely to be associated with airborne Mn levels among study populations. Saliva levels of Zn were significantly lower in welders than in controls (p<0.05), while Cd and Pb levels in saliva were unchanged. Significant associations were observed between saliva and serum for Mn (r=0.575, p<0.05) and Cu (r=0.50, p<0.05). Moreover, saliva Mn concentrations were higher among welders with 5-10years of employment than those with less than 5years of employment. Linear regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between saliva Mn and Cu and between saliva Mn and Zn. Taken together, these data suggest that Mn concentrations in saliva appear reflective of welders' exposure to airborne Mn and their years of welding experience, respectively. Elevated Mn levels among welders may alter the homeostasis of Cu and Zn.

Essential hypertension (EH) is a major public health problem world over and in India. Recent data on EH in the population of Chandigarh (Union Territory and capital of Punjab and Haryana States of India) revealed that the prevalence of EH has become double in the last 30 years in the residents of Chandigarh (26.9 to 45.80% in the year 1968 and 2002). Zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), magnesium (Mg), and manganese (Mn) in the serum are considered important in maintaining the human hypertension. The high Zn intake was considered to increase the blood pressure (BP) and to affect the other mineral status in the body. Recent survey on the trace metal status of different vegetables in the State of Punjab around Chandigarh (India) revealed that Zn level is significantly higher (40 mg/kg or more in above ground vegetables and 120 mg/kg or above in underground vegetables) in underground water-irrigated vegetables, but the levels of Cu and Mg are within prescribed limit. The present study was conducted on Chandigarh population to evaluate the levels of Zn, Cu, Mg, and Mn in the blood and urine of normotensive (NT) control and hypertensive (HT) subjects matched with number, age and sex. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer studies reevaluated that the levels of serum Zn, Mg, and Mn were significantly higher (p < 0.001), but the level of Cu was low in the HT subjects (BP = 160/93) compared to NT control (BP = 140/83). Higher levels of urinary Zn, Cu, Mg, and Mn were observed in the HT subject vs NT control (p < 0.001). Positive correlations were evaluated between the levels of serum Zn, Mg, and Mn vs systolic and diastolic pressures (DP and SP), respectively (r = 0.928, 0.863, 0.876, 0.808, 0.404, 0.326, p < 0.01), but negative and positive nonsignificant correlations between the serum Cu with SP and DP were recorded (r = -0.032, r = 0.024). Positive correlations were also evaluated between urinary levels of Zn, Cu, Mg, and Mn vs SP and DP (r = 0.718, 0.657, 0.750, 0.681, 0.630, 0.578, 0.516, 0.461, p < 0.01). Prevalence of essential hypertension may be due to higher Zn level in the food chain that makes the individuals vulnerable to other diseases over the time related to essential hypertension.

Background: Zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn) are involved in regulatory systems in the cell. Their role in neuromodulator activities and redox reactions has been implicated in the pathogenesis of neurological disorders. The aim of this study was to determine changes of Zn, Cu and Mn levels in brain tissue, blood and urine after experimental subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). The possible importance of these trace minerals on the pathogenesis of SAH was also discussed., Method: Rats were divided into three groups; namely a SAH group, a control group and a normal group. Blood samples in the SAH group and normal saline in the control group were injected into the cisterna magna. No surgical procedures were performed on the normal group. Brain tissue, blood and urine samples were measured for trace minerals by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Measurements were taken on days 3, 7 and 10 after the onset in the control and SAH groups, and on the first day in the normal group., Findings: The reduced blood Zn levels and increased Zn urine loss observed in the SAH group were conspicuously significant. Furthermore, significant changes in Mn levels were also seen at different stages of the trial in the SAH group. However, differences found in the Cu levels between the groups were not significant enough to explain the results., Interpretation: These results suggest that the low blood Zn levels seen throughout the stages, the low brain tissue Mn levels seen during the latter part of the trial, and the low blood Mn levels observed during the early stages, may all be related to an increased risk in experimental SAH in rats. These differences may have possible role in the pathogenesis of SAH, and further investigations into the reduced blood Mn levels observed during the study may lead to new insight into the treatment of SAH.

The effect of 1,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxypyrid-4-one [deferiprone (DE)] on aluminum mobilization and elimination from tissues and serum as well as the influence on the excretion of trace elements, copper, zinc and manganese in rabbits was investigated. Sixteen New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into three groups: control, Al-only and Al+DE. The Al-only and Al+DE animals received injections of Al2(SO43.18H2O 600 micromol Al/kg 5 days per week for 3 weeks. One week after the last Al injection the Al+DE rabbits were given deferiprone 750 micromol/kg/day intragastrically for 2 weeks. At the 42nd day the animals were sacrificed and the organs were taken and digested. Blood was taken from the ear artery three times (at the initiation of the experiment, before and after deferiprone administration). The aluminum and copper, zinc, manganese were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Our results showed that deferiprone could highly mobilize aluminum stores from tissues. At the end of experiment the aluminum contents of bone, kidney, liver and brain in Al+DE were significantly lower than that in Al-only rabbits. The copper, zinc, manganese contents were not affected by deferiprone administration.

Background: Enteral feeding is the fastest growing area of artificial nutrition, with the annual rate of growth being estimated at 20-25% a year. Previous studies have demonstrated trace element deficiencies in patients on long-term home enteral nutrition (HEN)., Methods: The trace elements zinc, selenium, copper and manganese were measured in blood samples from 37 patients on HEN using atomic absorption spectroscopy., Results: Plasma zinc concentrations (range 7.4-14.4 micromol/L) were below the reference range (12.6-22.0 micromol/L) in 30 patients, plasma selenium concentrations (range 0.73-1.76 micromol/L) were below the reference range (0.8-2.0 micromol/L) in only one patient. Whole blood manganese (range 74-309 nmol/L) and plasma manganese (range 13-51 nmol/L) were above both respective reference ranges (73-210 nmol/L and 9-24 nmol/L) in four patients. Two patients showed severely low plasma copper concentrations of 2.4 micromol/L and 2.5 micromol/L, and responded to treatment with extra copper supplementation., Conclusion: Although enteral feeds contain adequate concentrations of trace elements, problems with bioavailability may occur and patients receiving long-term enteral feeding should be monitored with regard to plasma trace element concentrations.

Dietary nutrient interactions are important factors to consider in the study of nutrient status and requirements. Here, the effects of dietary interactions among copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and sulfur amino acids (SAA) on blood cell characteristics and enzyme activities were observed. Male rats (n = 8) were used in a 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design and fed an AIN-93G-based diet containing dietary Cu (<1 and 5 mg/kg), Fe (10 and 35 mg/kg), Mn (10 and 50 mg/kg) and either L-cystine (LCys) or DL-methionine (DLMet). Blood was analyzed by automated hematology cell counting and by flow cytometry. Severe Cu deficiency was verified by reductions in the activities of serum ceruloplasmin (1% of control), RBC superoxide dismutase (SOD1) (14% of control), liver cytochrome c oxidase activity (25% of control) and serum extracellular SOD (SOD3) activity (20% of controls). Because Cu is required for Fe utilization, many physiologic responses that require Fe were affected by both deficiencies, including lowered blood hemoglobin (Hgb), lower RBC volume and Hgb concentration, and an increased number of reticulocytes. Cu and Fe deficiencies together worsened some conditions, i.e., lower Hgb, lower RBC Hgb, increased RBC distribution width, increased number of reticulocytes and nucleated RBC, and a higher platelet count. Increasing dietary Mn had little effect on most variables, except to reduce serum Cu when dietary Cu was adequate but not when it was low, and to reduce RBC SOD1 activity when dietary Fe was low but not when it was adequate. Hgb concentrations were higher (P < 0.002) in Cu-deficient rats fed LCys than in those fed DLMet. There was no effect in Cu-adequate rats. Hgb was higher (P < 0.004) in Fe-adequate rats fed LCys than in those fed DLMet, with no effect in Fe-deficient rats. Although the anemia of Cu deficiency in AIN-93G-fed rats was not as pronounced as that reported in rats fed the AIN-76A-based diet, other manifestations of the deficiency were prominent.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of supplemental antioxidant vitamins and minerals on the erythrocyte concentrations of zinc and copper in rabbits after exposure to X-rays. The animals were divided into two experimental and one control group (CG). The first group (VG) was given daily oral doses of vitamins E and C; supplemental amounts of manganese, zinc, and copper were mixed with the feed and given to the second group of experimental animals (MG). Blood samples were taken from all groups before and after 4 wk of vitamin and mineral administration and after irradiation with a total dose of 550-rad X-rays. The administration of minerals caused the most significant increases of Zn and Cu. Even after irradiation, the zinc levels in the irradiated animals were higher than in the nonirradiated vitamin-supplemented animals (p<0.05). The results suggest that supplementation with antioxidant vitamins and minerals may have a protective effect against X-ray-induced damage.

Purpose: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate serum manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) levels and visual functions including visual acuity, colour vision, pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEPs), and contrast sensitivity in heavy smokers and to compare these with the equivalent levels and functions in non-smokers., Methods: Data were recorded in 24 healthy, chronic and heavy cigarette smokers and 16 healthy, non-smoking control subjects. Serum Zn, Cu and Mn concentrations in all subjects were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry., Results: Both study and control subjects had normal visual acuity and colour vision. Pattern visual evoked potentials were normal in all study and control subjects. Contrast sensitivity was significantly reduced in heavy smokers compared to non-smokers (p < 0.023), despite the fact that central vision and PVEP responses were not affected. Mean serum Mn and Zn levels were significantly lower in smokers than in non-smokers (p < 0.0001 and p < 0.005, respectively)., Conclusions: Reduced contrast sensitivity values associated with low levels of serum Mn and Zn, which function as cofactors of superoxide dismutase in erythrocyte and other nucleated cells, suggest a possible role of trace elements in smoking-induced early retinal toxicity.

This article describes a study in which four trace elements (Se, Mn, Cu, and Fe) were analyzed in the blood serum of the patients with colorectal cancer from the Moravian region of the Czech Republic. Atomic absorption spectrometry with graphite furnace atomization was used for analysis of selenium and manganese and with flame atomization for analysis of copper and iron. The observed serum concentrations in adenocarcinoma colorectal patients of selenium were significantly lower (41:8 +/- 11.6 microg/L) and those of manganese (16.3 +/- 4.5 microg/L) and iron (2.89 +/- 1.23 mg/L) were significantly higher as compared to the age-matched control group. Copper serum content (0.95 +/- 0.28 mg/L) did not significantly differ as compared to healthy population.

Serum concentrations of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca) and inorganic phosphorus (P), as well as antigenic ceruloplasmin (Cp) and oxidase activity as a functional index for copper metabolism, were measured in 10 foals (5 males and 5 females) and their dams. Samples were harvested from the foals within 1 wk after birth and monthly from 1 to 17 mo of age. Samples were collected from their dams in the perinatal period (monthly from 2 mo before delivery to 5 mo postpartum). Serum oxidase activity, antigenic Cp and Cu in foals were extremely low at 1 wk. Serum Cp had the lowest value of 17.0 +/- 8.0 (mean +/- SD) mg/dL within the 1st wk, then increased rapidly up to 43.7 +/- 5.8 mg/dL at 1 mo, and maintained this level until the 17th mo. Serum Zn in foals had the highest value of 73.2 +/- 13.1 micrograms/dL within 1 wk, then decreased to 38.3 +/- 5.9 micrograms/dL by 17 mo. Serum Mn, Ca and P in mares were almost stable and within established reference ranges for our laboratory in the perinatal period, and these values in foals were also in the normal range. Even on appropriate feeding, serum Cu, Cp and oxidase activity were quite low a few weeks after birth, while a higher proportion of Cp-binding copper was found in the foals. This might be caused by the limited synthesis of ceruloplasmin in this period. These data suggest that newborn foals are in a critical situation of marginal copper status in the early stage of growth.

Up to now few plasma or serum reference or serum reference values have been available for the assessment of the essential trace element supply status in different age groups covering the whole range of life range. In the present investigation, the concentrations of copper, manganese, selenium, and zinc were determined in the serum of 137 healthy children and in the plasma of 68 blood-donors. The age distribution within these groups ranged from 1 month to 18 years and from 22 to 75 years. The determinations were carried out directly by means of electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometry with Zeeman background compensation. The adult plasma reference values (mean +/- 2 SD) were 1.65 +/- 8.6 mumol/1 for copper, 14.3 +/- 11.4 nmol/1 for manganese, 0.80 +/- 0.36 mumol/1 for selenium, and 16.6 +/- mumol/1 for zinc. No correlation between concentration of elements and sex could be established. In the child and adolescent group, the manganese levels exhibited an age-dependent linear decrease (54% of the starting value, slope 0.92, r = 0.4, p < 0.001), the copper and the selenium concentrations, respectively, exhibited an exponential increase (107%, r = 0.59 and 174%, r = 0.61), with the highest value in the age group of 6 to 10 years. Reference ranges are established for 9 different age groups. The results reflect the known physiological data on the trace element content in the tissue of children and their diet. The present study is an important pre-requisite for diagnosis and therapy of trace element deficiencies in all age groups.

Copper (Cu), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and manganese (Mn) levels in organs of LEC rats (Long-Evans rats with a cinnamon-like coat color), which develop spontaneous jaundice with hereditary hepatitis, were determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis method. Unusual accumulations of Cu in the liver of LEC rats were found, depending on the age of the animals, the metal concentration being more than approximately 20-40 times those of normal LEA rats (Long-Evans rats with an agouti coat color). Fe and Zn were also accumulated, in addition to Cu, significantly in the LEC rats. The unusual Cu accumulations in the liver of LEC rats were associated with the induction of metallothionein, estimated by radioimmunoassay method, in the liver of LEC rats, rather than that of superoxide dismutase, estimated by electron spin resonance -spin trapping method. These findings suggest that the unusual Cu accumulation in LEC rats is involved in the development of jaundice, hepatic injury and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Plasma zinc, copper, selenium, ferritin and whole blood manganese concentrations were measured in 22 children with kwashiorkor on admission to hospital and on days 5, 10 and 30 of refeeding. Twenty similarly aged, healthy, well nourished children served as controls. The mean (SEM) zinc, copper and selenium concentrations of 7.5 (0.93), 10.8 (0.64) and 0.29 (0.02) mumol/l, respectively, in the children with kwashiorkor on admission were all significantly lower than the values of 13.7 (0.66), 25.6 (1.72) and 0.72 (0.04) mumol/l in the controls. In contrast, the erythrocyte manganese level of 1.67 (0.09) micrograms/gHb and the median ferritin concentration of 293 micrograms/dl were significantly higher than in the controls. After 30 days there was full clinical recovery with significant weight gain and a return of the plasma albumin, caeruloplasmin, copper and ferritin to normal. However, manganese remained elevated and zinc and selenium concentrations remained significantly low. Our results suggest that nutritional rehabilitation of children with kwashiorkor is incomplete by 30 days and cannot be judged purely by a return of the plasma proteins to normal. Addition of selected trace elements to the diet may hasten full recovery.

Objective: To evaluate copper, zinc, manganese, magnesium, and other indices of peroxidative status in diabetic and nondiabetic human subjects., Research Design and Methods: Convenience sample of 57 insulin-dependent or non-insulin-dependent diabetic subjects recruited from the diabetes clinic of the University of California, Davis, Medical Center and 28 nondiabetic subjects recruited from the staffs of the Departments of Internal Medicine and Nutrition. Individuals conducting laboratory analyses were blind to subject group. A fasting blood sample was collected from all subjects and appropriately processed for future analyses. A 24-h urine collection was obtained in a subset of subjects., Results: Hyperzincuria and hypermagnesuria were evident in diabetic subjects compared with control subjects. There were no differences in plasma magnesium or whole-blood manganese between groups. Plasma copper was higher and plasma zinc was lower in diabetic than in control subjects. When data were viewed with respect to specific diabetes-associated complications, diabetic subjects with retinopathy, hypertension, or microvascular disease had higher plasma copper concentrations compared with both diabetic subjects without complications and with control subjects. There were no significant differences between control and diabetic subjects in erythrocyte copper-zinc superoxide dismutase activity or whole-blood glutathione peroxidase or glutathione reductase activities. Plasma peroxide concentrations were higher in diabetic than control subjects., Conclusions: Diabetes can alter copper, zinc, magnesium, and lipid peroxidation status. Perturbations in mineral metabolism are more pronounced in diabetic populations with specific complications. It is not known whether differences in trace element status are a consequence of diabetes, or alternatively, whether they contribute to the expression of the disease.

Serum zinc, copper and manganese levels were estimated in normal subjects (NS) and stone formers (SF). There was no significant difference in the serum levels of Zn, Cu, and Mn in NS and SF, the values being 101.5 +/- 35.1 micrograms% and 94.3 +/- 45.6 for Zn; 91.75 +/- 27.0 micrograms% and 88.5 +/- 34.1 for Cu; and 87.0 +/- 36.7 micrograms% and 79.6 +/- 35.5 for Mn, respectively. Zinc excretion was relatively high in NS (790.08 +/- 172.88 micrograms/dl) as compared to other populations and was significantly higher in SF (1154.92 +/- 290.17 micrograms%, p less than 0.001). Copper and manganese excretions in SF were significantly lower than in NS (p less than 0.001). Zinc was present in substantial quantities in renal (2.52 +/- 3.98 g%), ureteric (0.75 +/- 0.51 g%) and vesical (1.71 +/- 3.20 g%) stones. Manganese was present in traces in all the stones and copper in two-thirds of the stones.

Reportedly, serum manganese concentrations increase after myocardial infarction, closely correlated with increased serum aspartate aminotransferase activity. However, these conclusions are apparently based on analyses of contaminated samples. Serum manganese concentrations after myocardial infarction have been re-investigated by neutron activation analysis, and no significant increase could be demonstrated. Because serum copper and zinc could be determined simultaneously, analyses for these trace elements are also reported, which confirm the findings of others. After myocardial infarction a statistically significant (0.02 smaller than P smaller than 0.05) increase in serum copper and a statistically significant (0.001 smaller than P smaller than 0.01) decrease in serum zinc were observed.

Examination of normal men and women with the aid of emission spectral analysis has shown that high muscular training led to the intensification of the retention of iron additionally administered to the body. This indicates concealed deficiency of this element in the body. Administration of therapeutic doses of iron essentially raised copper and manganese excretion from the body. As the iron dose was raised, copper and manganese elimination via the gastrointestinal tract progressed.

The levels of copper, zinc, calcium, manganese and magnesium have been monitored in the sera of patients suffering from various types of cancer. Only serum copper appeared to be of any diagnostic significance, its levels being above the normal reported range in the breast cancer, leukaemia and Hodgkin's lymphoma patients. In the case of breast cancer, serum copper is progressively elevated according to the stage of the disease. Serum calcium levels were also significantly lower in patients with tumours of the breast, gastrointestinal tract and cervix. The results suggest that serum copper levels could be of prognostic significance in breast cancer patients receiving radiotherapy.

The extent to which chronic dialysis alters the serum copper and manganese content was examined. The copper content was not significantly altered, whereas the level of manganese in the blood rose highly significantly. This manganese originates from the dialysis fluid. The behaviour of the manganese level during dialysis treatment suggests that the element is deposited in the body. Its transport is clearly connected with protein, since the manganese is not found in the ultrafiltrate. The is no fear of manganese intoxication.
