In Central Western Argentina (CWA), the incorporation of cultigens by hunter-gatherer populations has been much discussed. This paper explores the relationship between population dynamics, subsistence change, and burial patterns driven by the process of land use intensification and increasing reliance on maize. We hypothesize that territorial behavior emerged in the context of population growth and competition for resources with a high probability of failure, as expected in an arid environment. To evaluate this hypothesis, we explore four lines of inquiry in southern Mendoza (CWA): 1) the frequency of radiocarbon dates to estimate population dynamics; 2) the Juvenile Index as a fertility rate proxy; 3) the stable isotopes on human bone (δ 13C co , δ 15N, δ 13C ca) to reconstruct diet; and 4) burial patterns as an estimate of territorial control. Our results partially support our hypothesis: During an early stage, when maize started to appear in the diet, the population was increasing, and cemeteries emerged along with some signs of violence. The hypothesis is not supported in a second period, when maize consumption and population were highest, but large cemeteries disappeared. In light of this evidence, the effect of maize on human societies was not uniform and irrevocable, and the adoption of maize by human foragers contributed to a new and diverse set of human-environment relationships. This paper explores variation in maize consumption among human societies in arid environments of central-western Argentina over the last 2500 years. Increasingly positive human d 13 C signatures suggest a high intake of C 4 resources (maize) until ca . A.D. 1400. After this time, the importance of maize in the diet drops and never reaches pre-Hispanic consumption rates, despite the known importance of maize to Inka and other late-prehistoric societies in the region. The article presents information on the importance of Zea Mays, corn, in pre-Hispanic agriculture in the southern part of Mendoza Province in Argentina. The article discusses the importance of cultigens in the subsistence of human population. The oldest recorded cultigens came form the context of a funerary. Pre-Hispanic corn reached in the southern parts of Province some 1,000 years ago. Lagiglia was the most common domesticated plant in the region. The article also offers the chronological developments of the corn cultivation.

This paper explores the relationships between population change and human diet after the adoption of domesticated resources in northwest Mendoza, a subregion of central western Argentina (CWA). To estimate population, we used summed probability distributions of radiocarbon ages (RC-SPD). We used carbon and nitrogen stable isotope values (ẟ13C co , ẟ13C ca , and ẟ15N) obtained on human bone (collagen and carbonate) to reconstruct human diet. The population trend of late Pleistocene-Holocene hunter-gatherers changed its trajectory ca. 2300 cal years BP coincident with the adoption of domesticates. After this date, a significant increase in human population occurred. We observe population increases ("booms") followed by notable drops ("busts"). Stable isotopes (ẟ13C) on human bone follow a similar trend, indicating an increased consumption of maize during the "boom" periods and a decreased consumption during the "bust" periods. Based on the association between estimated changes in human population and changes in human bone isotope values over the last 2300 cal years BP, we propose that levels of maize consumption emerge from human predator–prey and plant-herbivore interactions. The use of maize, thus, is not part of a social evolutionary stage, but, rather, an outcome of continuous social-ecological process in which maize use may increase or decrease over time.
