Background: We aimed to compare the intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements by a dynamic Scheimpflug analyzer (Corvis ST), a non-contact tonometer, and an ocular response analyzer after hyperopic small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE)., Methods: Thirteen patients who underwent hyperopic SMILE in one eye were enrolled prospectively. IOP and corneal biomechanical parameters were measured preoperatively and at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months postoperatively with a non-contact tonometer (IOP NCT ), Corvis ST (biomechanical corrected IOP [bIOP]), and ocular response analyzer (Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure [IOPg] and cornea compensated IOP [IOPcc]). A linear mixed model was used to compare the IOPs and biomechanical values among methods at each time point., Results: IOP NCT , IOPg, and IOPcc dropped significantly after surgery, with the amplitude being 3.15 ± 0.48 mmHg, 5.49 ± 0.94 mmHg, and 4.34 ± 0.97 mmHg, respectively, at the last follow-up visit. IOP NCT decreased by 0.11 ± 0.06 mmHg per μm of excised central corneal thickness. bIOP did not change significantly after surgery. Preoperatively, no difference was found among the four measurements (P > 0.05). Postoperatively, IOP NCT and bIOP were higher than IOPg and IOPcc. bIOP was independent of cornea thickness at last follow-up visit, whereas it correlated significantly with corneal biomechanics similar to the other three IOP values., Conclusion: bIOP is a relative accurate measure of IOP after hyperopic SMILE.

Purpose: To investigate the long-term changes in anterior corneal structure after surface ablation., Methods: In this retrospective study, patients who received surface ablation including laser-assisted subepithelial keratomileusis (LASEK) and epipolis laser in situ keratomileusis at the Department of Ophthalmology of Fudan University Eye and Ear, Nose and Throat (EENT) Hospital (Shanghai, People's Republic of China) were telephoned. Patients were asked to follow-up at the refractive center. Changes in the anterior cornea (from the epithelium to the anterior stroma) were examined by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and in vivo confocal microscopy., Results: Thirty-four eyes of 18 patients (10 years or more after operation), 16 eyes of 8 patients (4 years after operation), 12 eyes of 6 patients (1 year after operation), 8 eyes of 4 patients (6 months after operation), and 12 eyes of 6 patients (1 month after operation) were included. Under OCT, a smooth, continuous, and highly reflective demarcation line between the epithelial layer and the stroma was noted in all eyes that received surgeries more than 1 year previously. For eyes at 6 months after operation, the complete formation of this demarcation line was detected in 12.5% (1/8) of eyes and a partial formation of this demarcation line was observed in 87.5% (7/8) of eyes. A partial formation of this demarcation line was observed in 100% (12/12) of eyes in patients at 1 month after surgery., Conclusions: A demarcation line in the human cornea can be detected after corneal surface ablation. It was completely formed around postoperative 6 to 12 months. The functions and components of this structure merit investigation.

Purpose: To investigate the predictability of the achieved lenticule thickness in small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for the correction of myopia., Methods: In this prospective study, a total of 80 eyes of 45 patients who underwent the SMILE procedure were included. A Scheimpflug camera was used to measure the preoperative and postoperative corneal topography. Achieved lenticule thicknesses at the pupil center and corneal vertex were calculated by subtracting the postoperative corneal thickness at the pupil center and corneal vertex from preoperative corresponding values. Predictability between the achieved and VisuMax readout at different locations (the pupil center and corneal vertex) and postoperative visits (postoperative day 1 and 6 months) were evaluated using a general linear model., Results: Achieved lenticule thickness at the pupil center and corneal vertex showed good correlation at both postoperative day 1 (pupil center: r=0.914, corneal vertex: r=0.903) and 6 months (pupil center: r=0.886, corneal vertex: r=0.866). The achieved lenticule thickness at postoperative day 1 was 8.5-μm thinner at the pupil center and 9.6-μm thinner at the corneal vertex than the VisuMax readout., Conclusions: This study suggests that the predictability between the achieved and VisuMax readout is favorable. The lenticule thickness at the pupil center is closer to the VisuMax readout than corneal vertex.

Purpose: To investigate early visual and refractive outcomes, corneal stability and optical quality after femtosecond laser small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for treating myopia and myopic astigmatism over -10 D., Methods: Thirty eyes (30 patients) with myopia and myopic astigmatism of over -10 D were treated with VisuMax ® femtosecond laser (version 3.0; Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany). Six months postoperative safety, efficacy and predictability were evaluated. Corneal Scheimpflug topography was measured preoperatively, 1 day, 3 months and 6 months postoperatively. Wavefront aberrations were measured preoperatively, 3 months and 6 months postoperatively., Results: Six months postoperatively, LogMAR uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) were -0.013 ± 0.086 and -0.073 ± 0.069, respectively. 73% (97%) of eyes were within 0.5 (1) D of target refraction. No eyes lost CDVA, 43% (13 eyes) gained one line and 7% (two eyes) gained two lines. Mean corneal back curvature (KMB) and posterior central elevation (PCE) did not change significantly comparing preoperative and 6 months postoperative data (p = 0.91 and 0.77, respectively). Comparing 1 day with 6 months postoperative data, central corneal thickness (CCT), mean corneal front curvature (KMF), KMB and PCE did not change significantly (p = 0.27, 0.07, 0.52, 0.71, respectively). Total higher-order aberration (HOA), spherical aberration and coma increased significantly (p < 0.01) but trefoil remained stable (p = 0.49)., Conclusion: Our results indicate that SMILE can correct myopia and myopic astigmatism of over -10 D predictably. Purpose: To investigate re-innervation in the implanted lenticule, as well as changes to the cornea, after correcting hyperopia with an autologous implantation of a lenticule obtained through small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE)., Methods: This study retrospectively analysed re-innervation in the implanted lenticule, as well as microscopic morphological changes in the corneal architecture of the recipient cornea in five patients (with myopia in one eye and hyperopia in the contralateral eye) who received SMILE in the myopic eye and femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) combined with lenticule implantation in the contralateral hyperopic eye. Re-innervation in the implanted lenticule, as well as microscopic morphological changes in corneal architecture, were evaluated by in vivo confocal microscopy., Results: One patient was examined at postoperative week six, two were examined at postoperative month two, one was examined at postoperative month nine, and one was examined at postoperative month 12. Partial subbasal nerve fibre regeneration was detected in two patients (Case 4 who was examined at postoperative month nine and Case 5 who was examined at postoperative month 12). Regenerated and branched nerve fibres were detected in the implanted lenticule in Case 5 who was examined at postoperative month 12. Both the anterior and posterior interfaces showed an absence or decrease of keratocytes and the presence of small particles of various brightnesses. Keratocytes in the implanted lenticule presented abnormal morphology in size and shape after surgery in all treated eyes, but showed partial morphological recovery in two patients (Case 4 who was examined at postoperative month nine and Case 5 who was examined at postoperative month 12)., Conclusions: These preliminary findings suggest that nerve fibres will regenerate into the implanted lenticule after autologous lenticule implantation. Background: To investigate the visual and refractive outcomes in patients with mild to moderate myopia after laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK) using the 500 Hz pulse rate of the Triple-A profile., Methods: Thirty-six eyes of 20 patients (mean age, 27.5 ± 4.6 years) were included in this prospective, consecutive study. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), corneal topography, and corneal aberrations were measured preoperatively and 1 day, 1 week, 1, 3 and 6 months post-operation., Results: At 1 week after surgery, UDVA was better than or equal to 20/25 in all eyes. At postoperative 6 months, the efficacy and safety index was 1.05 ± 0.13 and 1.12 ± 0.15, respectively; all eyes had a UDVA of 20/20 or better, and no eyes showed a loss in CDVA; 100% of the eyes were within ±1.00 D of the attempted spherical equivalent (SE) correction., Conclusion: The postoperative results indicate that using the Triple-A ablation profile of the MEL 90 excimer laser with a 500 Hz pulse rate is a safe, efficient, and predictable method to correct mild to moderate myopia.

Background: The novel Femtosecond lenticule extraction (FLEx) procedure has been considered safe, predictable, and effective in treating myopia and myopic astigmatism, with few complications. However, an enhancement procedure after FLEx may be required in some cases, but has not been reported in detail., Case Presentation: A 24-year-old woman who had undergone bilateral FLEx with the VisuMax femtosecond laser treatment for myopic astigmatism complained of double vision in her left eye after the operation. The manifest refraction was -0.50/-1.25 × 180°. The corneal topography showed a central-inferior steepened zone. The ocular wavefront measurements displayed a high value of total aberrations as well as coma. She was scheduled for an enhancement procedure and it was performed by relifting the primary FLEx flap in the left eye four months later. Ablation was made with the Mel-80 excimer laser. After retreatment, the corresponding aberrations were diminished and the corneal topography turned flattened. Her symptom resolved completely with good visual outcomes., Conclusion: This first detailed case report demonstrates the feasibility and efficacy of enhancement after FLEx for visual symptomatic eye after myopia correction. An analysis of more cases would be necessary to determine a more definite profile.

Purpose: To investigate the differences in corneal deformation parameters after femtosecond laser small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE), laser-assisted subepithelial keratomileusis (LASEK), and femtosecond laser-assisted LASIK (FS-LASIK)., Methods: In this retrospective study, 17 eyes of 17 patients after SMILE, 18 eyes of 18 patients after LASEK, and 17 eyes of 17 patients after FS-LASIK were included. Corneal deformation parameters were measured with the CorVis ST tonometer (Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany) 3 months postoperatively., Results: The mean value of deformation amplitude of the FS-LASIK group was significantly higher than that of the LASEK group (P = .022). The mean value of applanation time (applanation 1) of the LASEK group was significantly higher than that of the FS-LASIK group (P = .038). No significant difference was detected in the mean values of deformation amplitude and applanation time (applanation 1) (P > .05) between the LASEK and SMILE groups or between the SMILE and FS-LASIK groups. Multiple linear regression model analysis revealed that after adjustment for age and preoperative central corneal thickness and manifest refraction spherical equivalent, the significance of the difference in the mean values of applanation time (applanation 1) and deformation amplitude between the LASEK and FS-LASIK groups were P = .084 and .059, respectively. In all three groups, the values of applanation 1 negatively correlated to those of applanation time (applanation 2) (SMILE: r = −0.577, P = .015; LASEK: r = −0.833, P < .001; FS-LASIK: r = −0.516, P = .034) and deformation amplitude (SMILE: r = −0. 556, P = .021; LASEK: r = −0.877, P < .001; FS-LASIK: r = −0.509, P = .037)., Conclusions: Applanation time (applanation 1) and deformation amplitude (as measured with the CorVis ST tonometer) may be helpful in assessing corneal biomechanical changes after corneal refractive surgery. The relations between these parameters should be discussed in further studies.

Purpose: To compare the impact on corneal sensation after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser-assisted LASIK (femto-LASIK) in patients with myopia., Methods: In this prospective, nonrandomized comparative study, 71 subjects were enrolled. Thirty-eight eyes of 38 patients underwent SMILE and 33 eyes of 33 patients underwent femto-LASIK. Corneal sensation was tested with Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometry in five corneal areas preoperatively and at 1 week and 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. Comparison of corneal sensation was performed for the SMILE and femto-LASIK groups. Additionally, the correlations were evaluated between the postoperative corneal sensation, preoperative spherical equivalent, and ablation depth., Results: All tested areas within the cap or flap demonstrated corneal hypoesthesia immediately after both surgeries. SMILE-treated eyes showed less compromised corneal sensation than femto-LASIK-treated eyes at all postoperative visits in the central, inferior, nasal, and temporal areas at the 1-week and 1-month visits. In the SMILE group, the inferior, nasal, and temporal quadrants recovered faster than other areas. In the femto-LASIK group, the sensation over the flap did not recover to preoperative levels by postoperative 6 months. There was no correlation between postoperative corneal sensation, preoperative spherical equivalent, and ablation depth in both groups., Conclusions: The impairment of corneal sensation was less significant in the SMILE group than in the femto-LASIK group and was independent of preoperative spherical equivalent or ablation depth., (Copyright 2014, SLACK Incorporated.)

Purpose: To evaluate corneal reinnervation, and the corresponding corneal sensitivity and keratocyte density after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK)., Methods: In this prospective, non-randomized observational study, 18 patients (32 eyes) received SMILE surgery, and 22 patients (42 eyes) received FS-LASIK surgery to correct myopia. The corneal subbasal nerve density and microscopic morphological changes in corneal architecture were evaluated by confocal microscopy prior to surgery and at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery. A correlation analysis was performed between subbasal corneal nerve density and the corresponding keratocyte density and corneal sensitivity., Results: The decrease in subbasal nerve density was less severe in SMILE-treated eyes than in FS-LASIK-treated eyes at 1 week (P = 0.0147), 1 month (P = 0.0243), and 3 months (P = 0.0498), but no difference was detected at the 6-month visit (P = 0.5277). The subbasal nerve density correlated positively with central corneal sensitivity in both groups (r = 0.416, P<0.0001, and r = 0.2567, P = 0.0038 for SMILE group and FS-LASIK group, respectively). The SMILE-treated eyes have a lower risk of developing peripheral empty space with epithelial cells filling in (P = 0.0005)., Conclusions: The decrease in subbasal nerve fiber density was less severe in the SMILE group than the FS-LASIK group in the first 3 months following the surgeries. The subbasal nerve density was correlated with central corneal sensitivity.

Purpose: To investigate the changes in dry eye symptoms and clinical signs and corneal sensitivity after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond LASIK (femto-LASIK)., Design: Prospective, non-randomized comparative study., Methods: The study included a total of 71 eyes of 71 patients; the SMILE group comprised 38 eyes of 38 patients, and the femto-LASIK group comprised 33 eyes of 33 patients. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Tear film breakup time (TBUT), the Schirmer test without anesthesia (S1T), corneal fluorescein staining, and central corneal sensation were evaluated before surgery and at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery., Results: OSDI scores in both groups were increased immediately and returned to preoperative level at 1 month after surgeries. The TBUT values in both groups were reduced after surgeries relative to their preoperative scores. Patients in SMILE group were less likely to have corneal staining compared with those in the femto-LASIK group ([odds ratio] OR = 0.50, 95% [confidence interval] CI 0.28 to 0.93, P = 0.03). Central corneal sensitivity was decreased at all postoperative time points in both groups. However, the central corneal sensation scores in the SMILE group were greater than that in the femto-LASIK group at all of the postoperative time points (all P<0.05)., Conclusions: SMILE surgeries resulted in a short-term increase in dry eye symptoms, tear film instability, and loss of corneal sensitivity. Furthermore, SMILE surgeries have superiority over femto-LASIK in lower risk of postoperative corneal staining and less reduction of corneal sensation.

Purpose: To investigate the morphology of corneal caps in femtosecond laser small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and its relation to the refractive outcomes., Methods: A prospective study of fifty-four corneal caps created with VisuMax femtosecond laser were examined using an Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 6 months after SMILE. The cap thickness at nine points on each of the four meridians (0°, 45°, 90°, 135°) and the diameter were measured. Cap morphology, changes over time and its correlation with refractive outcomes were assessed., Results: The mean achieved central cap thickness were (108.74±5.06) µm at 6 months and (107.32±4.81 ) µm at 1 month postoperatively, significantly thinner than that at 1 day (110.81±7.95) µm and 1 week (109.58±7.48 ) µm (P<0.05). The mean diameter on 0° meridian was (7.61±0.07) mm, significantly larger than that on 90° meridian (7.57±0.06) mm (P = 0.001). Cap morphology showed good regularity, except that the differences of points in two pairs were significant at 1 day postoperatively. The uniformity was consistent over time and the central cap thickness was thinner than those in the paracentral and peripheral areas. The refractive outcomes stabilized within 1 month. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) was correlated to the central cap thickness at 1 day and 1 week (both rs  = 0.33, p<0.05). The uniformity index was correlated with UDVA (rs  = 0.34, p<0.05) and corrected distance visual acuity (rs  = 0.32, p<0.05) at 1 week postoperatively., Conclusions: Corneal caps of SMILE are predictable with good reproducibility, regularity and uniformity. Cap morphology might have a mild effect on refractive outcomes in the early stage. Further study should focus on the impact on the visual quality.

Biomedical patches offer significant potential for keratitis treatment. Building on advances in multifunctionality and biomimicry, an innovative, multifunctional hydrogel patch with high therapeutic efficacy, inspired by the native architecture and functions of the cornea, is introduced. By engineering a composite patch comprising recombinant human collagen (RHC) hydrogel, near‐field electrospinning (NFES) microfibers, and gold‐nanoparticle‐decorated tetragonal barium titanates (BTO@Au), structural mimicry, mechanical reinforcement, tissue‐specific adhesion, and bacterial inhibition are achieved. The RHC hydrogel recreates a three‐dimensional (3D) microenvironment that emulates the natural structure of the corneal tissue, demonstrating excellent tissue adhesion. Integrated within this hydrogel, the NFES microfibers, designed to emulate the orthogonal arrangement of native corneal stroma, not only reinforce the mechanical strength of the RHC hydrogel but also act as scaffolds to guide the aligned growth of human keratocytes. A unique aspect of this advanced patch is the incorporation of BTO@Au nanoparticles, which generate reactive oxygen species for effective bacterial eradication when subjected to ultrasound stimulation. Through in vivo studies on rat models with infected corneal wounds, this hydrogel patch exhibits superior therapeutic efficacy compared to the current treatment. It is posited that these cornea‐inspired ultrasound‐responsive adhesive hydrogel patches represent a significant scientific advancement with high potential for clinical applications. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the visual outcomes and corneal densitometry (CD) after allogenic lenticule intrastromal keratoplasty (AL-LIKE) and autologous lenticule intrastromal keratoplasty (AU-LIKE) for the correction of moderate-to-high hyperopia. Methods: Ten subjects (14 eyes) underwent AL-LIKE and eight (8 eyes) underwent AU-LIKE. Patients were examined preoperatively and 1 day, 1 month, and 6 months postoperatively. The visual outcomes and CD for both surgical methods were evaluated. Results: No postoperative complications were observed with either method. The efficacy index was 0.85±0.18 and 0.90±0.33 in the AL-LIKE and AU-LIKE groups, respectively. The safety indices were 1.07±0.21 and 1.25±0.37 in the AL-LIKE and AU-LIKE groups, respectively. The CD values of the anterior, central, and posterior layers in the AL-LIKE group increased significantly at 1 day postoperatively (all P < 0.05). The CD values of the anterior and central layers remained significantly higher than the preoperative values at 6 months postoperatively (all P < 0.05). The CD values of the anterior layer in the AU-LIKE group increased significantly 1 day postoperatively (all P < 0.05) and decreased to preoperative values (all P > 0.05) 1 month postoperatively. Conclusion: Both AL-LIKE and AU-LIKE exhibit good efficacy and safety in correcting hyperopia. However, AU-LIKE may have a smaller affected area and faster recovery time than those associated with AU-LIKE related to changes in corneal transparency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous studies investigating the effectiveness of conventional corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) and transepithelial CXL in keratoconus treatment have reported conflicting outcomes. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to compare the effectiveness of these treatments. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for prospective randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with no restrictions. We included visual acuity (corrected distance visual acuity, uncorrected distance visual acuity) and corneal keratometry (K) as primary outcome parameters, and spherical equivalent, central corneal thickness (CCT), and endothelial cell density, as secondary parameters. We finally included seven reports (including six RCTs involving 305 participants and 344 eyes). Our analysis revealed significant postoperative differences in average K and CCT values between conventional and transepithelial CXL-treated patients [K: weighted mean difference (WMD) = 0.79, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.04–1.53, p = 0.04; CCT: WMD = 4.53, 95% CI = 0.42–8.64, p = 0.03]. In contrast, we did not find any significant differences in visual acuity, flattest K value, steepest K value, cylinder K value, apex K value, spherical equivalent, or endothelial cell density between groups. In conclusion, transepithelial CXL has a more protective influence on corneal thickness than conventional CXL, and results in lesser postoperative corneal flattening. Background: To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in the treatment of myopia with corneal opacity.Methods: To evaluate the treatment of myopia with corneal opacity, 9 patients (4 males, 5 females) who underwent SMILE were enrolled in this prospective clinical study. One eye of each patient was treated. The results of laser scanning and lenticule extraction were observed during the surgery, and the surgical videos were again reviewed after surgery. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), and spherical equivalence (SE) were noted at 1 month after surgery. The depth and density of the corneal opacities were measured by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and the Pentacam anterior eye segment analyzer.Results: All procedures were uneventful and no intraoperative complications were observed. At 1 month after surgery, the UDVA of all patients was 20/25 or better and no patients lost Snellen lines. The mean safety and efficacy indexes were 1.10 ± 0.24 and 1.08 ± 0.16, respectively, at 1 month postoperatively. The mean postoperative spherical equivalent was 0.27 ± 0.23 diopter (D). All eyes were within ±0.75 D and 8 eyes (88.9%) were within ±0.50 D. There was no eccentric corneal topography or abnormal morphology in the corneal caps. The corneal opacities of all patients were within the optical zone. The mean preoperative depths in the deepest areas of corneal opacity were 152 ± 38 μm (range: 86-217 μm); at 1 month after surgery (P < .01), they were 117 ± 28 μm (range: 86-189 μm). The preoperative maximum density of corneal opacity was 48.5 ± 20.7 (range: 20.4 to 85.8); at 1 month after surgery (P > .05), it was 49.8 ± 26.7 (range: 19.8 to 82.5) at 1 month after surgery.Conclusion: Patients with corneal opacity can be successfully treated with the SMILE operation. Purpose: To investigate the changes of posterior corneal elevation after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for moderate and high myopia. Methods: In this prospective study, fifty consecutive eyes of thirty patients (10 male, 20 female) who underwent SMILE for myopia and myopic astigmatism were included. Eyes were divided in two groups based on the preoperative spherical equivalent refraction: high myopia group (32 eyes, range -6.25D to -10.00D) and moderate myopia group (18 eyes, range -3.00D to -6.00D). Posterior corneal surfaces were measured by a Scheimpflug camera (Pentacam, Oculus Germany) preoperatively and 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months postoperatively. Posterior central elevation (PCE) and posterior mean elevation (PME) at 17 predetermined points in the central-4mm area above the best-fit sphere were analyzed. Results: No significant difference in the amount of posterior corneal elevation changes in the high myopia group was noted over time (P = 0.23 and P = 0.94 for PCE and PME, respectively). Similarly, the changes in the moderate myopia group before and after SMILE were not significant either (P = 0.34 and P = 0.40 for PCE and PME). A statistically significant correlation was found between the residual bed thickness and the shift of the PCE in the high myopia group at 12 months postoperatively (r = 0.53, P = 0.01). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the posterior corneal surface remain stable within one year after SMILE for both moderate and high myopia. The changes of PCE correlate to the residual bed thickness for high myopia. Long-term changes of posterior corneal surface need further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: To report a first case of lenticule addition and corneal cross-linking for post-LASIK ectasia with associated corneal thinning.Case Presentation: Lenticule addition followed by corneal cross-linking was performed on the left eye of a patient with post-LASIK ectasia. Postoperatively, the corneal power and elevation were stable with a remarkable improvement in corneal thickness, and the lenticule had merged with the adjacent corneal stroma at 30 months follow-up. The patient's corrected distance visual acuity gained two lines.Conclusions: This case provides a potential treatment option for patients with keratectasia and keratoconus in association with thin corneal thickness (less than 400 μm) and may provide the benefit of delaying or avoiding the need for keratoplasty, which has its own associated complications and is limited by the availability of donor corneas.
