It is found from actual data that due to generation dispatch and uncertain renewable generations and loads with complicated correlations, inferring the probabilistic distributions for uncertain inputs is challenging. Many probabilistic power flow approaches have been developed in the literature but their validations using realistic systems and data are lacking. This paper proposes a data-driven probabilistic analysis approach for system risk assessment of the miniWECC system using actual data. The sparse Gaussian process (SGP) is advocated to quantify the impacts of uncertain inputs on voltage security. SGP does not need the probability distribution function of uncertain inputs, can handle correlations and is highly computationally efficient. Rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) power generator is a widely used distributed energy resource (DER) in distribution systems. Currently, the majority of PVs are installed behind-the-meter (BTM), where only customers’ net demand is recorded by smart meters. Disaggregating BTM PV generation from net demand is critical to utilities for enhancing grid-edge observability. In this paper, a data-driven approach is proposed for BTM PV generation disaggregation using solar and demand exemplars. First, a data clustering procedure is developed to construct a library of candidate load/solar exemplars. To handle the volatility of BTM resources, a novel game-theoretic learning process is proposed to adaptively generate optimal composite exemplars using the constructed library of candidate exemplars, through repeated evaluation of disaggregation residuals. Finally, the composite native demand and solar exemplars are employed to disaggregate solar generation from net demand using a semi-supervised source separator. With the rising penetration of distributed energy resources, distribution system control and enabling techniques such as state estimation have become essential to distribution system operation. However, traditional state estimation techniques have difficulty coping with the low-observability conditions often present on the distribution system due to the paucity of sensors and heterogeneity of measurements. To address these limitations, we propose a distribution system state estimation algorithm that employs matrix completion (a tool for estimating missing values in low-rank matrices) augmented with noise-resilient power flow constraints. This method operates under low-observability conditions where standard least-squares-based methods cannot operate, and flexibly incorporates any network quantities measured in the field. We empirically evaluate our method on the IEEE 33- and 123-bus test systems, and find that it provides near-perfect state estimation performance (within 1% mean absolute percent error) across many low-observability data availability regimes. Abstract How to manage wind power uncertainty in system operation is an urgent and important issue, especially under substantially increasing penetration levels of wind generation in electric power systems. With increasing numbers of wind power plants (WPPs) integrated into power systems, their variability and uncertain power outputs become a challenge to maintaining system reliability. Traditional stochastic optimization-based models face the curse of dimensionality when the number of WPPs increases. This paper proposes a novel decentralized wind power uncertainty management model. In this model, conventional generators optimize their power capacity output and their participation to mitigate wind power uncertainty locally with only limited information exchange with the system operators. First, a distributionally-robust chance-constrained optimal power flow (DRCC-OPF) model is deployed to schedule the generation and reserve considering the wind power forecast uncertainty. Then, the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is used to reformulate the DRCC-OPF model into the distributed optimization model for each conventional generator and WPP. The tests on a small PJM 5-bus system and the IEEE 118-bus system demonstrate that the proposed decentralized model can increase the operation reliability without sacrificing system operating cost, especially when the wind power penetration levels are high. Using the proposed model, the optimal solutions can be obtained within one minute, for all studied cases, which verifies the computation efficiency of the proposed decentralized model. Furthermore, considering a large number of WPPs integrated into the system, the proposed decentralized method obtains a lower operating cost within one minute which demonstrates its efficiency to deal with high dimension of uncertainties.
