An attempt has been made to develop cotton-treated fabrics to be used as home textile and decorative products inside the room, which can adsorb carbon dioxide and thus reduce indoor air pollution. Cotton fabric has been treated with bentonite clay, aerosol fumed silica and zeolite separately, and then evaluated for adsorption of CO2 gas using newly developed NITRA fabric gas adsorption efficiency testing equipment. It is found that the fabric treated with a 4% concentration of bentonite clay, 3% concentration of aerosol fumed silica, and 2% concentration of zeolite adsorbs 23.62%, 28.04%, and 21.35% of CO2 respectively in 24 h. An instrument has been developed to measure the combined effect of fibre coherence and resiliency, commonly known as processing propensity. The results show good correlation between fibre processing propensity and yarn properties. The inter-relationship between the characteristics of single and double yarns made of polyester/viscose and polyester/cotton has been studied. The major yarn characteristics, such as unevenness, imperfections, single yarn strength (RKm), strength CV%, elongation-at-break and yarn hairiness, of double yarns are found to be related to the respective properties of single yarns. The mass CV%, total imperfections, single yarn strength, elongation-at-break and hairiness of double and single yarns are highly correlated. Nine cottons differing widely in fibre properties have been spun on a set of modern machinery to different counts ranging from 20s to 100s to establish the relationship between the fibre properties and the yarn strength/yarn unevenness. For assessing fibre properties, HVI (high volume instruments) test system and for assessing yarn properties, lea strength tester, single yarn strength tester and evenness tester were used. Two expressions, one for predicting Rkm value and the other for predicting yarn irregularity, from newer fibre length and strength parameters measured on HVI testing system using HVI test mode have been derived. The influence of fibre and yam parameters on lint shedding propensity has been studied. The lint shedding propensity is influenced by fibre length parameters and short fibre content. Amongst the yarn parameters, the yarn fineness, twist and hairiness influence lint shedding. The waxing of yarn does not reduce the lint shedding propensity despite reduction in yarn- to-metal friction. Blending of polyester with cotton reduces the lint shedding of cotton yarns. The spinning system and yam structure play a significant role in determining the lint shedding propensity of yarns. Compact yarns and rotor yarns show lower lint shedding propensity as compared to equivalent ring-spun yarns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the difficult process of selecting cotton fibres and yarn of certain quality. Particular focus is given to the significant role of prediction equations in predicting yarn and cotton fibre properties that ultimately determine the quality. The article also discusses the importance of these properties, such as strength or length, in determining quality, determinations that differ from scientist to scientist, and the variance in quality parameters globally depending on the instrumentation and standards utilized.
