Objective: To describe the distribution profile of thyroidectomies in Brazil from 2010 to 2020 from a macro-regional perspective., Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective, detailed and descriptive study built on secondary data obtained from the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH/SUS). We organized the data in tables and grouped them according to the federative unit, macro-region, type of procedure, mortality rate, and year of performance. We performed statistical analysis using the χ 2 test to assess the association between the variables, observing a P value of < 0.05 and a confidence interval of 95%., Results: From 2010 to 2020, 160 219 thyroidectomy surgeries were performed, of which 77 812 (48.56%) were total, 38 064 (23.76%) partial and 41 191 (25.70%) oncological. The Southeast was responsible for the largest share of procedures, with 70 745 (44.15%), followed by the Northeast with 43 887 (27.39%). In 2020, the procedure was less performed, with 9226 (5.75%) surgeries. The total mortality rate was 0.16% during the study period., Conclusion: We found that thyroidectomies are carried out mainly in the Southeastern, Northeastern, and Southern regions, and showed a downward trend in 2020, which may be related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, total thyroidectomy is the most performed surgery, and the Northern region had the highest mortality rate.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 infection has had a major impact on kidney transplant patients. Recent evidence suggests that solid organ transplant recipients who received mRNA vaccines reach low immunization rates. There are only few reports about the risk factors and severity of COVID-19 in these patients. Our single center experience describes the patient profile and disease evolution observed in this vulnerable group after inoculation., Material and Methods: Retrospective cohort study with kidney transplant patients who received a COVID-19 vaccine before testing positive for SARS-CoV-19 using polymerase chain reaction. Demographic characteristics and clinical information are described and compared with our previous series of patients who were infected before the initiation of the vaccination rollout., Results: Sixteen kidney transplant recipients diagnosed with COVID-19 after being vaccinated were included and compared with our previous series of 76 unvaccinated patients who were positive for COVID-19. No differences were found among risk factors such as age, time after transplant, hypertension, and obesity between groups (P value > .05). After COVID-19 diagnosis among inoculated patients, 10 patients were hospitalized, and 4 of who met the criteria for admission to the intensive care unit. Three patients died of COVID-19 complications. Despite this, the incidence of infections has decreased after vaccination rollout (P value < .05)., Conclusions: Patients' risk profiles remain constant among recipients who were positive for COVID-19 between waves. We did not find significant differences in hospitalization and severity rates in this reduced group of patients. Background: Spain has been severely affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, with 195,944 persons infected and 20,453 deaths at the time of writing. Older people with respiratory or cardiac conditions are most at risk., Objective: The aim was to compare respiratory symptoms in nursing home residents and patients with uncontrolled asthma, who are considered vulnerable to COVID-19., Methods: We studied 134 nursing home residents and 139 patients with uncontrolled asthma, groups vulnerable to COVID-19. Demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations, outcomes, key laboratory results, and radiological images were collected from medical records. COVID-19 infection was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)., Results: Thirteen (9.3%) patients with uncontrolled asthma, all receiving inhaled corticosteroids were infected by COVID-19. Eighty (60%) nursing home residents were infected; only 28, all of whom had received inhaled corticosteroids, had a good prognosis., Conclusions: Early treatment with inhaled corticosteroids may be helpful in COVID-19 infection. En México se tomó la decisión de suspender las clases presenciales en las universidades, como medida preventiva para disminuir la probabilidad de que los estudiantes y profesores contrajeran el virus del COVID-19. El confinamiento ha tenido efectos psicosociales importantes en la vida de los profesores, que también han tenido desafíos y retos durante el trabajo remoto, ya que, son los comisionados del proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje de los estudiantes, además, el regreso de manera gradual a clases presenciales significó para profesores un desafió más para su dinámica de trabajo lo que fue un detonante en ámbito emocional causando sentimientos como la ansiedad, estrés e incertidumbre, lo en algunos casos afectó en su desempeño laboral. Bajo ese panorama, el objetivo de este estudio fue analizar factores presentes en las dinámicas escolares de los profesores del Centro Universitario UAEM Amecameca como consecuencia de la emergencia sanitaria causada por el COVID-19.
