Abiotic and biotic stresses negatively affect plant cellular and biological processes, limiting their growth and productivity. Plants respond to these environmental cues and biotrophic attackers by activating intricate metabolic-molecular signaling networks precisely and coordinately. One of the initial signaling networks activated is involved in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS), and reactive sulfur species (RSS). Recent research has exemplified that ROS below the threshold level can stimulate plant survival by modulating redox homeostasis and regulating various genes of the stress defense pathway. In contrast, RNS regulates the stress tolerance potential of crop plants by modulating post-translation modification processes, such as S-nitrosation and tyrosine nitration, improving the stability of protein and DNA and activating the expression of downstream stress-responsive genes. RSS has recently emerged as a new warrior in combating plant stress-induced oxidative damage by modulating various physiological and stress-related processes. Several recent findings have corroborated the existence of intertwined signaling of ROS/RNS/RSS, playing a substantial role in crop stress management. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying their remarkable effect are still unknown. This review comprehensively describes recent ROS/RNS/RSS biology advancements and how they can modulate cell signaling and gene regulation for abiotic stress management in crop plants. Further, the review summarizes the latest information on how these ROS/RNS/RSS signaling interacts with other plant growth regulators and modulates essential plant functions, particularly photosynthesis, cell growth, and apoptosis. Globally, abiotic stresses, such as temperature (heat or cold), water (drought and flooding), and salinity, cause significant losses in crop production and have adverse effects on plant growth and development. A variety of DNA-based molecular markers, such as SSRs, RFLPs, AFLPs, SNPs, etc., have been used to screen germplasms for stress tolerance and the QTL mapping of stress-related genes. Such molecular-marker-assisted selection strategies can quicken the development of tolerant/resistant cultivars to withstand abiotic stresses. Oilseeds such as rapeseed, mustard, peanuts, soybeans, sunflower, safflower, sesame, flaxseed, and castor are the most important source of edible oil worldwide. Although oilseed crops are known for their capacity to withstand abiotic challenges, there is a significant difference between actual and potential yields due to the adaptation and tolerance to severe abiotic pressures. This review summarizes the applications of molecular markers to date to achieve abiotic stress tolerance in major oilseed crops. The molecular markers that have been reported for genetic diversity studies and the mapping and tagging of genes/QTLs for drought, heavy metal stress, salinity, flooding, cold and heat stress, and their application in the MAS are presented. NAC transcription factors regulate stress-defence pathways and developmental processes in crop plants. However, their detailed functional characterization in tomatoes needs to be investigated comprehensively. In the present study, tomato hybrids subjected to 60 and 80 days of drought stress conditions showed a significant increase in membrane damage and reduced relative water, chlorophyll and proline content. However, hybrids viz., VRTH-16-3 and VRTH-17-68 showed superior growth under drought stress, as they were marked with low electrolytic leakage, enhanced relative water content, proline content and an enhanced activity of enzymatic antioxidants, along with the upregulation of NAC and other stress-defence pathway genes. Candidate gene(s) exhibiting maximum expression in all the hybrids under drought stress were subjected to detailed in silico characterization to provide significant insight into its structural and functional classification. The homology modelling and superimposition analysis of predicted tomato NAC protein showed that similar amino acid residues were involved in forming the conserved WKAT domain. DNA docking discovered that the SlNAC1 protein becomes activated and exerts a stress-defence response after the possible interaction of conserved DNA elements using Pro72, Asn73, Trp81, Lys82, Ala83, Thr84, Gly85, Thr86 and Asp87 residues. Water stress negatively impacts the physiology of plants, affecting their growth and development. It is considered among the most important environmental factors responsible for reduced crop production. In this regard, biofertilizers may be considered significant for their reparative properties to increase stress tolerance in crop plants. We studied the effects of water stress on the morphological and biochemical characteristics of onion plants with AMF (Funneliformis mosseae) and potassium silicate application. The water stress significantly affected all the studied traits, each with minimum recorded levels. Plants that received combined treatments of AMF and potassium silicate showed maximum percent increments in all the studied characteristics, e.g., plant height (156.7%), weight of bulb (416.8%), antioxidant activity (224.0%), membrane stability index (74.5%), relative water content (87.3%), and total soluble solids (63.71%). Therefore, the study demonstrated that all the investigated variables were affected negatively by water stress. However, bio-fortification of onion plants with silicates and AMF inoculation may be considered useful for functional food production, with numerous health promoting properties. Pearl millet is a small, nutrient-rich cereal grain that can survive in both heat and drought conditions. Many Asian and African nations regularly produce pearl millet grains. In terms of yield, India is leading the globe and contributes highest production of Pearl millet. Its grains have a huge nutritional potential because of gluten free nature have more dietary fibers than rice, similar to maize in terms of lipid content, and more or less similar in protein in wheat. Due to the growing demand in food industries, various techniques for the improved production have been introduced. The agricultural revolution has expanded the use of chemical fertilizers for the enhanced production of many agricultural crops, including pearl millet. However, use of chemical fertilizers through traditional methods leads to excessive application but inefficient uptake by the plant (due to volatilization, leaching off into the soil, difficult absorption into the plant etc.), causes negative impact on the natural environment. Nano-fertilizers on the other hand are crucial determining factors in agriculture for enhancing growth, yield and provide higher nutrient usage efficiency, less fertilizer waste and lower cultivation costs etc. These kind of materials might successfully address the solution of current agricultural problems, particularly those related to the human population's iron and zinc deficiencies. Wheat is an essential constituent of cereal-based diets, and one of the most significant sources of calories. However, modern wheat varieties are low in proteins and minerals. Biofortification is a method for increasing the availability of essential elements in the edible portions of crops through agronomic or genetic and genomic interventions. Wheat biofortification, as a research topic, has become increasingly prevalent. Recent accomplishments in genomic biofortification could potentially be helpful for the development of biofortified wheat grains, as a sustainable solution to the issue of "hidden hunger". Genomic interventions mainly include quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping, marker-assisted selection (MAS), and genomic selection (GS). Developments in the identification of QTL and in the understanding of the physiological and molecular bases of the QTLs controlling the biofortification traits in wheat have revealed new horizons for the improvement of modern wheat varieties. Markers linked with the QTLs of desirable traits can be identified through QTL mapping, which can be employed for MAS. Besides MAS, a powerful tool, GS, also has great potential for crop improvement. We have compiled information from QTL mapping studies on wheat, carried out for the identification of the QTLs associated with biofortification traits, and have discussed the present status of MAS and different prospects of GS for wheat biofortification. Vegetables require an optimum supply of mineral elements like silicon (Si). Si is second to oxygen in its abundance in the earth crust, and its role is quite significant in tackling biotic and abiotic stresses of vegetables. Si application also improves several agronomic and quality traits of vegetables. Hence, Si application is recommended as a strategy for the improvement of vegetable crops production. Although the research about the role of Si in vegetable dicots still lags far behind than cereals. Recently, omics-based approaches were used to provide a deeper understanding of the role of Si in vegetable protection. Here, we have compiled the studies focusing on the role of Si for vegetables, thus, enabling all of the important information regarding the effect Si application to vegetables at one place.
