Two new diiron dithiolate complexes [(μ-SCH2)2CHCO2R][Fe2(CO)6] (R = -C10H7-β,1; -C6H4Me-m,2) bearing thiolate-bridged-carboxy functionality, which are closely related to the active site of [FeFe]-hydrogenase, have been synthesized by esterification reaction of parent complex [(μ-SCH2)2CHCO2H][Fe2(CO)6] (A) and C10H7OH-β or HOC6H4Me-min the presence of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) and dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC). Deprotonolysis of the N,O-bidentate pyridyl functionalized alkoxy ligands, 1,1-dimethyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethanol ( LH), 1-phenyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethanol ( LH) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethanol ( LH), with 1 equiv of AlMe gave the corresponding dimeric metal-monoalkyl compounds [ LAlMe] ( 1), [ LAlMe] ( 2), and [ LAlMe] ( 3), respectively. Compounds 1- 3 were characterized by H and C NMR spectroscopy analysis, and the molecular structures of 1 and 2 were further confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. In the presence of PrOH, aluminum compounds 1- 2 exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the solvent-free Tishchenko reaction under mild conditions. The guanidinatolithium compound [{(C 2 H 5 ) 2 N}C(NC 6 H 5 )(NAr)LiOEt 2 ] 2 (Ar = 2,6-Me 2 C 6 H 3 ) ( 1 ), is readily accessible in high yield upon insertion reaction of lithium diethyl amide with unsymmetric carbodiimine ArN C NC 6 H 5 . The reaction of 1 with AlCl 3 in Et 2 O afforded the guanidinatoaluminum compound [{(C 2 H 5 ) 2 N}C(NC 6 H 5 )(NAr)] 2 AlCl ( 2 ). Compound 2 reacted with equivalent MeLi to give [{(C 2 H 5 ) 2 N}C(NC 6 H 5 )(NAr)] 2 AlCH 3 ( 3 ), which was also prepared by the treatment of Et 2 NH with sequentially trimethylaluminum and carbodiimine ArN C NC 6 H 5 in hexane. Compounds 1 – 3 were characterized by 1 H, 13 C NMR spectra and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.
