Abstract: In this work, the effects of magnetic annealing on crystal structure and multiferroic properties of BiFeO3 and Bi0.85Dy0.15FeO3 have been investigated. It is found that the X-ray diffraction patterns of pure BiFeO3 samples are obviously broadened after magnetic annealing, whereas those of Bi0.85Dy0.15FeO3 samples are almost unchanged. Magnetic field annealing did not affect the magnetic properties of these two kinds of samples much. However, ferroelectric properties of the two materials exhibited different behaviors after magnetic field annealing. For pure BiFeO3 samples, the remnant polarizations (P r) are suppressed; in contrast, for Bi0.85Dy0.15FeO3 samples, P r is greatly enhanced. Possible mechanisms for the effects of magnetic field annealing have been discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A novel manganese(II) complex, [Mn(phen)(H 2 O) 4 ]SO 4 ·2H 2 O ( 1 ), has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The manganese(II) complex contains only one phen ligand and four water ligands. By a catalytic test, complex 1 provided direct evidence that phen is a key ligand instead of an auxiliary one in manganese catalase mimics. Magnetic susceptibility measurements for complex 1 have been performed down to 2 K, suggesting paramagnetic behavior for this complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Rare-earth ion Dy was substituted at the bismuth site in BiFeO3 to produce Bi1− x Dy x FeO3 (x =0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) polycrystalline ceramics. A two-stage solid-state reaction method was adopted in synthesizing the materials. The effects of varying the Dy doping concentration on the crystalline structures, morphologies and magnetic properties of the final products have been investigated. It is found that Dy doping resulted in a sequence of structural phase transitions and led to small grain sizes in the materials. As a result, the magnetic property of the doped samples was much enhanced. Therefore, it seems a promising way to improve the weak ferromagnetic property of BiFeO3 based materials by Dy doping.
