Abstract: Yb:Y3Al5O12 (Yb:YAG) single crystals with Yb doping concentration 0.5at.%, 5at.%, 15at.%, 25at.%, 50at.%, 100at.% and Yb:YAlO3 (Yb:YAP) single crystals with Yb doping concentration 0.5at.%, 5at.%, 15at.%, 30at.% were grown by the Czochralski process. The fluorescence spectra of these crystals and the effects of self-absorption on the shape of the fluorescence spectra were studied. Through comparing the fluorescence spectra of Yb:YAG and Yb:YAP, all results indicate that the effects of self-absorption on the fluorescence spectra of Yb:YAP are remarkably stronger than that of Yb:YAG at the same Yb concentration. Dy 3+ -doped YAlO 3 single crystal has been successfully grown by Czochralski technique. The spectroscopic parameters were determined by Judd-Ofelt theory based on the measured polarized absorption spectra. Dy:YAP crystal exhibits a yellow emission centered at 574 nm which can be used for pumping of the forbidden 1 S 0 - 3 P 0 ytterbium clock transition. The decay lifetime of the 4 F 9/2 level was measured to be 185 μs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The π- and σ-polarization laser operation in an a-cut disordered Nd: CaYAlO 4 crystal were investigated. Making full use of the difference in polarized fluorescence spectra, σ-polarization laser at 1080 nm and π-polarization laser at 1069 nm were selected to oscillated by using of a polarizing beam splitting cube. Output powers of 2.45 and 1.52 W were obtained at the pump power of 9.8 W by rotating the laser crystal, respectively. 0.67 W output power at wavelength of 1363 nm was also achieved based on 4 F 3/2 - 4 I 13/2 transition using the cavity mirror designed for 1.3 µm laser operation.
