As part of a larger investigation, which seeks to link the cultural change in Chile in the last 40 years with the evolution of retail advertising; in which an exploratory analysis of a sample of graphic pieces from 1997 took place. The aim is to characterize the advertising time using a quantitative description of the characters present in the advertisements and a qualitative analysis of linguistic messages and deviant cases. Although Chile was living important economic and socio-cultural changes, which promoted an explosive development of consumption, the advertising analyzed presents a simple and denotative style, where texts and associated promotion offers low prices and a variety of predominate products. Minority representation of characters tends to display passive attitudes, especially women. However, it also displays an emerging trend toward individuation of the female subject. Sustainability has been well used (and abused) as "buzz-word", label or language token for certain behavior and action in political, organizational and increasingly in individual communication. Based on critical approaches in language, discourse and communication studies, the paper explores potential processes of normalization of sustainability as a new norm, discusses new theories and methodological variations that can be applied to better understand sustainable development, and offers a theoretical concept for cultivation of sustainability as a dialectic process of questioning and stabilization in transformation and change processes. Complemented by a communication for development and social change perspective, the paper lays the theoretical foundation for an understanding of sustainability as organizing principle in socio-ecological change processes, which is further elaborated in the contributions of this Special Issue, which are introduced at the end. Human–animal relations in post-industrial societies are characterized by a system of cultural categories that distinguishes between different types of animals based on their function in human society, such as "farm animals" or "pets." The system of cultural categories, and the allocation of animal species within this cultural classification system can change. Options for change include re-categorizing a specific animal species within the categorical system. The paper argues that attempts by political actors to adapt the institutional system to cultural change that calls for re-categorization of certain animal species can start a contradictory process that may lead to long-term survival of the respective institution despite the cultural change. It is common to explain the persistence of political institutions with institutional path dependency or policy preferences of the governing parties. This paper introduces a new institutional theoretical approach to the explanation, the approach of "rejecting changing a part for fear of undermining the whole." This paper uses a case study of a series of failed political efforts to change the treatment of dogs in the framework of the agricultural human–animal policy in the Federal Republic of Germany in the second half of the twentieth century, to evaluate its theoretical argument, using analyses of historical political documents, mass media, and communication documents between civil society actors and policymakers. This paper makes an innovative contribution to the theory and research on institutional change, the sociology of agriculture and food, and the sociology of human–animal relations. Recently there has been more attention to the cultural aspects of social robots. This paper contributes to this effort by offering a philosophical, in particular Wittgensteinian framework for conceptualizing in what sense and how robots are related to culture and by exploring what it would mean to create an “Ubuntu Robot”. In addition, the paper gestures towards a more culturally diverse and more relational approach to social robotics and emphasizes the role technology can play in addressing the challenges of modernity and in assisting cultural change: it argues that robots can help us to engage in cultural dialogue, reflect on our own culture, and change how we do things. Research has demonstrated an unwillingness among travelers to reduce their holiday flying. Recently, however, a movement with people avoiding and problematizing flying has emerged in Sweden and spread internationally. This paper explores how the rising problematization of flying changes the meanings of holiday air travel in a carbon-constrained world. Using travel magazines and digital media sources, we trace changing discourses (overarching ideas and traditions shaping social practices) of holiday air travel in Sweden from 1950–2019. The paper identifies the emergence of a new discourse (Staying on the ground) and shows how it works through moralization (flying is ethically wrong) and persuasion (emphasizing alternatives) to challenge dominant meanings of holiday air travel as desirable and necessary. While Staying on the ground is far from a dominant discourse, there are signs that it has begun to destabilize contemporary cultures of aeromobility. The Staying on the ground discourse exemplifies how meanings attached to ingrained high-carbon practices, and the policies that sustain them, are currently being contested and rearticulated. Acknowledging that low-carbon transformations are fundamentally forms of social and cultural change, the paper illustrates why practices of carbon lock-in are so entrenched, but also how they might be resisted and open up for change. This paper deals with the notion of identity in an indigenous setting of the Taniis in Arunachal Pradesh. The role of culture assumes greater significance in constructing the identity and position of Taniis over a period of time. This article is based on ethnographic methods of data collection, such as in-depth personal interviews and participant observation. The focus is primarily on the cultural practice of tattooing among the Taniis of Arunachal Pradesh, India, which was put an end to in the 1970s. By analyzing this practice, we aim to narrate the story of changing identity markers among the members of the community. It was found that change in one cultural identity can impact aspects of the indigenous life. Such loss of identity markers portrays the diplomacy and dialogues that might re-enforce existing urges to homogeneity and monism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines continuity and change in the bases of recommendations about dishes to prepare and serve in the household in Britain between 1968 and 2016. Employing a content analysis of recipes in widely circulating women's magazines, it compares a sample of recipes from 2015–16 with ones from 1968 and 1992 analyzed previously. In this follow-up study, new data are collected, using the same coding frame, with findings interpreted through the same conceptual framework, to classify recommendations about domestic food preparation with reference to four "culinary antinomies" expressing symbolic, structural oppositions between (1) health and indulgence, (2) economy and extravagance, (3) convenience and care, and (4) novelty and tradition. The changing prevalence of these principles of recommendation is described. Discussion revolves around interpretation of the social significance of changing recommendations, modification of the conceptual framework, and methodological aspects of the measurement of social change. Rank is the position or standing in the Korean field of disaster management, whereas ability is the competence or required proficiency in carrying out appropriate disaster management. This paper aims to examine the ways to improve emphasis on rank in Korea for the ultimate goal of increasing related productivity. A qualitative content analysis with the support of descriptive approach has been used as the main methodology. With respect to this, rank-oriented disaster management has been systematically compared with ability-oriented disaster management via the five stakeholders, namely the public officials, businessmen, researchers, volunteers, and local community. The key tenet is that the nation needs to change its current rank-oriented disaster management into ability-oriented disaster management as a form of cultural change.
