This paper examines the origins of the two educational terms--class and curriculum. The authors believe that an understanding of the origins of key words in education may contribute not only to the history of education but also to the wider development of educational theory. The paper argues that the emergence of classes (in the modern sense) arose not so much from an increase in school size as from shifts in patterns of school attendance. Currently, the earliest known use of class occurs in a description of the University of Paris written by Robert Goulet and printed in 1517. From the 16th century to the Industrial Revolution, the term class developed three distinct meanings. First, it was used in universities and large schools to refer to a cohort of students (e.g., the class of 76). Second, it referred to a teaching room (Goulet's original use). Third, it came to mean a relatively small group of students, usually engaged upon a common task. The paper associates the emergence of curriculum with the rise of Calvinism. The earliest source of the term curriculum in the Oxford English Dictionary is a mention in the records of Glasgow University for 1633. During the Reformation, Glasgow University underwent a series of reorganizations intended to turn the University to more "definitely Protestant ends." In this reorganization process the term curriculum was used. (Author/RM)

This paper questions the "science of reading" as offering a secure bridge to practice and instead argues for socio-cultural grounded forms of best practicing. The paper argues for a shift from viewing curriculum as generic and standardized to viewing it as particular and generative--requiring formative and dynamic approaches to design. It requires tantamount to a shift from best practices to best practicing in concert with teachers assuming a position as cultural workers and learners.

Seven papers presented at a research conference on space and geometry are contained in this monograph. The first paper gives an historical sketch of the development of geometry and discusses several considerations for selecting geometric content for the elementary school. Two papers deal with Piaget's research into the child's development of space and geometry concepts, and another paper suggests directions for further research on space from the Piagetian perspective. A fifth paper reviews the van Hiele levels of development in geometry and discusses the new Soviet geometry curriculum, another paper reviews cross-cultural research on perception, and the final paper examines some research issues concerning children's concepts of transformation geometry. Collected in this document are papers presented at a conference on designing a mathematics methods course for secondary school teachers. The seven short papers included under teaching strategies cover mathematical ideas which determine strategies, micro-teaching, modular organization, laboratory approach, student-centered strategy, discovery, and tutoring skills. These proceedings are divided into two major sections. Section I contains papers based on original research and thought and are intended as examples of products of rigorous scholarship. This section is subdivided into three subsections covering the future, the present, and the past. Papers appearing in this section were reviewed by at least two researchers selected for their expertise relative to the article being examined. Twelve papers appear in this section. The second section includes descriptive or journalistic papers and program reviews. Papers for this section are intended to be useful and of interest to environmental educators. In this document, available literature is identified and reviewed in order to determine whether there are substantiated cognitive effects associated with the use of games in the mathematics classroom. Three criteria were used for selection of the literature: the treatment was identified as a game; cognitive measures were obtained; and the dependent variables included mathematical variables. The paper observes that the study of games as an instruction-learning process in mathematics has so far been neither thorough nor systematic and no definite conclusions can be made about the use of games in teaching mathematics. This paper presents the views of three critics of higher education in America, chosen to represent the conservative, centrist, and liberal points of view. The critics are Russell Kirk (conservative), Robert Maynard Hutchins (middle ground), and Harold Taylor (liberal); and their views are presented within the framework of six concepts: (1) outlook toward man, (2) curriculum, (3) stance toward control of one's education, (4) who should have an education, (5) use or non-use of science, and (6) process. Outlook toward man ranges from "perfectibility" (students can make their own academic decisions) to "depraved" (students must be kept in line through discipline). Curriculum is viewed in a range from liberalizing to utilitarian types of courses. The control of one's education is argued from the notions of prescriptive versus free elective. The use or non-use of science in education is argued within the context of the behavioristic versus humanistic controversy, while the question of who should have an education is part of the elitist-democratic continuum considered by all critics of higher education. The final concept to be analyzed is process, that is, rationalism (in which decisions are made to conform to postulated truths) versus instrumentalism (which views the individual as the criterion for decision and process as more important than substance). In October 1975 a conference was convened in Euclid, Ohio, by the Basic Skills Group of the National Institute of Education (NIE). Thirty-three participants presented position papers addressing two major questions: (1) What are basic mathematical skills and learning? (2) What are the major problems related to children's acquisition of basic mathematical skills and learning, and what role should the National Institute of Education play in addressing these problems? These papers are presented in this volume. Conferees organized into small working groups during the conference. Conference participants included representatives from public school systems; university faculties of education, mathematics, and psychology; educational research and development organizations; textbook publishers; the National Science Foundation; and NIE. The papers range from broad philosophical discussions of the issues to specific detailing of objectives and problems. (SD)

Subjects include overviews of the development of educational philosophies, contemporary problems, and curriculum. This paper explores three simple data manipulation techniques (synthesis, augmentation, curriculum) for improving abstractive summarization models without the need for any additional data. We introduce a method of data synthesis with paraphrasing, a data augmentation technique with sample mixing, and curriculum learning with two new difficulty metrics based on specificity and abstractiveness. We conduct experiments to show that these three techniques can help improve abstractive summarization across two summarization models and two different small datasets. Furthermore, we show that these techniques can improve performance when applied in isolation and when combined.
