Provided in this interim report is a summary of activities relating to the Pikeville, Kentucky career education project. With specific emphasis placed on career education for the elementary grades and on occupational placement for grades 7-12, the report provides information on: (1) Goals and Objectives, (2) Project Design and Procedures, (3) Results and Accomplishments, (4) Evaluation, and (5) Conclusions, Implications, and Recommendations. Accomplishments as perceived by the project staff occurred in the following areas: (1) installation of program in the elementary school, (2) examination of special education programs, (3) establishment of job placement service, and (4) attitude change of school personnel. An outside evaluation team noted that the teachers and project staff have produced a great deal of useful instructional materials and that considerable progress has been made toward achieving stated goals and objectives. This report describes a summer training institute designed to develop research skills among 30 selected local school district representatives from Kentucky and Appalachia to enable them to serve as research coordinators in their districts. The purpose of the institute was to increase the capability of local school districts to improve their school programs by providing competent research personnel. The following phases of the training program are described: (1) An interdisciplinary seminar; (2) an interdisciplinary lecture series; (3) a research project by each trainee; (4) a research design class; and (5) special sections of classes in educational research, applied statistical methods, and educational sociology. The objectives, content, participants, organization, and major strengths and weaknesses of the program are briefly evaluated. The appendix contains a copy of the institute's brochure, application form, evaluation form, and a list of the trainees. A related document is EA 002 679. (JH)

The guide is divided into three sections, the first of which deals with the types of characteristics of adhesives and includes a discussion of each of the important adhesives. Unit II is concerned with application, clamping, and curing of adhesives, and contains excerpts from articles on glues and adhesives, drawings, and photographs to illustrate the material covered. The third unit is a discussion of adhesive bond tests and the techniques for conducting them. This booklet is concerned largely with the physical composition and behavior of wood and the factors influencing its utilization. Headings of the five major units are: (1) Wood, What It Is, (2) The Plant Origin of Wood, (3) Gross Features of Wood, (4) Natural Defects in Wood, and (5) The Identification of Wood. A section of experiments, including teaching aids, equipment needed, sample test questions, suggested student problems and projects, and references, presents information on such properties of wood as density and specific gravity, moisture content, strength characteristics, and structure. The guide is illustrated throughout with drawings, diagrams, photographs, tables, and graphs. A glossary and bibliography are included. Most units contain information on manufacturing processes, properties, types and grades, and uses of the products. Selected bibliographies are listed for each unit. The final section provides instructional aids, suggested projects and student activities, and materials and equipment needed for specific projects. This curriculum guide is for use by college instructors concerned with expanding traditional woodworking programs. It was developed in a National Defense Education Act summer institute and is based on an outline provided by members of a previous institute. The content concerns wood substitutes which are made to resemble wood and are often used with wood but contain no wood or wood products. Units are (1) The Manufacture of High Pressure Plastic Laminate, (2) Vinylwood Veneers, (3) Vinyl Wrapped Wood Substitutes, (4) Wood Grain Reproduction on Wood and Other Materials, and (5) High Pressure Molded Products. Each unit contains information relative to the development, use, and production of the wood substitutes and a reference bibliography. (EM)

Supplementary materials include a list of films and filmstrips, a glossary, a bibliography, and reference and instructional aids.
