Abstract

The document is a student manual and teacher's manual for a simulated office practice class designed to give students training in a business office on school premises. In the simulation, students perform as office personnel and as customers and creditors. The first part of the guide, directed to students, contains: general information on the Patriot Company (a simulated office equipment company), employee information, objectives of the simulation, room layout diagram, company organization chart, descriptions of job duties for 19 company positions, a catalog-price list, simulation customer names, simulation creditor names, and forms for evaluation of employees. The detailed teacher's manual lists: materials to be prepared prior to simulation, steps to simulation, suggestions for obtaining supplies, forms and supplies needed for a 12-week simulation, equipment sources, special suggestions, procedure for distribution of mail, company balance sheet, and additional student and teacher-developed activities. Also included are sample scripts for the simulators to follow, cash sales list, credit limits of customers, inventory list, and instructor evaluation forms for student performance in each of the 19 company positions. A brief description of 50 forms used in the simulation and samples of each form conclude the manual. (MS)

Abstract

Human population growth and the implications of increasing population on the well-being of men and nations is examined in this twelfth grade curriculum guide which is part of a series for grades 4 through 12. Consideration is also given to political and sociological problems which arise as adjuncts to the question of population. Abstract

The primary objective of this guide is to set forth goals of learning that will contribute to student achievement of economic literacy, suggest activities, and resources. It is a skeletal structure which teachers can incorporate into a continuous social studies curriculum, and other appropriate studies. The main purpose of economic education is to develop the problem-solving ability of children as it relates to personal and social problems. To accomplish this it is necessary to: 1) develop the child's ability to think analytically; 2) to help the child to relate his everyday experiences to the economic world; and, 3) develop sufficient knowledge of the basic structure of the subject so that a frame of reference can be established. A core of developmental concepts has been selected that can be extended through environmental, chronological, and logical sequences in line with grade progression. The topical areas are: the problem of scarcity, the economic goals of the nation, productive resources, the market economy of the United States, financial institutions, the circular flow, resource extenders, interdependence and trade, and economic analysis. Materials already in use in Arkansas have been drawn upon heavily: Parts I and II of the Joint Council's Developmental Economic Education Program (DEEP). (SBE)

7. Development of Instructional Packets Designed to Improve the Communicative Skills of Tenth Grade Students in Vocational-Technical Schools, and Communicative Skills Instructional Packets: Orientation, Reading, and Language. Final Report.

Abstract

An experimental program of teaching modules or packets--Orientation, Reading, and Language--was designed to improve the communicative skills of 10th graders in vocational-technical schools. The modules consisted of "Student Exercises" requiring student involvement and thinking and a "Teacher's Manual" with ideas for presenting the materials in a relaxed classroom situation where the student develops self-confidence by independently working on his problems. Use of the modules produced beneficial results in student attitudes and abilities in language usage and independent study. The units were intended to be used in sequence but can be used alone as a sampling of their titles indicates: (1) Becoming a Good Student; (2) Practicing Parliamentary Procedure; (3) Improving Attitudes; (4) Looking Toward a Career; (5) Reading the Newspaper; (6) Improving Reading Techniques; (7) Language Study; and (8) Writing an Autobiography. 8. Investigating Career Opportunities. Curriculum Guide.

Abstract

This curriculum guide, developed by a project committee of administrators, supervisors, instructors, and a counselor in the areas of industrial and vocational education, contains three extensive 12-week laboratory units at the junior high school level covering careers in the occupational clusters of business education, home economics, and industrial education. Funded under the Vocational Education Amendments of 1968, this course is intended to provide an overview of career opportunities, techniques for self-appraisal, and help in choosing courses leading to the students' occupational goals. In a 2-column format, teaching procedures are correlated with resource lists of transparencies and student handouts included with each unit. A course rationale, appended student worksheets, time allotments, and detailed behavioral objectives are provided. Final evaluation questions are given for each unit. (AG)
