The article discusses the American historical memory of the Great Sioux War of 1876, Fort Robinson, Nebraska and U.S. Army General George Custer. An overview of historic sites for late 19th century forts in the American West, including the Fort Laramie National Historic Site in Wyoming, is provided. An overview of Americans' relations with the Sioux Indians in the late 19th century is provided.

Abstract

The article presents an examination of Camp Sheridan, a military outpost in northwestern Nebraska founded in 1874 to oversee affairs at the Red Cloud and Spotted Tail Indian agencies. The article compares the history of Camp Sheridan with that of Camp Robinson which experienced much more hostile activity. It examines the Fort Laramie Treaty with the Sioux people and discusses government relations with the Native Americans in the region including Sioux Chief Spotted Tail and Oglala Chief Red Could.
