Potential damage in composite structures caused by hail ice impact is an essential safety threat to the aircraft in flight. In this study, a nonlinear finite element (FE) model is developed to investigate the dynamic response and damage behavior of hybrid corrugated sandwich structures subjected to high velocity hail ice impact. The impact and breaking behavior of hail are described using the FE-smoothed particle hydrodynamics (FE-SPH) method. A rate-dependent progressive damage model is employed to capture the intra-laminar damage response; cohesive element and surface-based cohesive contact are implemented to predict the inter-laminar delamination and sheet/core debonding phenomena respectively. The transient processes of sandwich structure under different hail ice impact conditions are analyzed. Comparative analysis is conducted to address the influences of core shape and impact position on the impact performance of sandwich structures and the corresponding energy absorption characteristics are also revealed. Abstract Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) are widely applied as protective structures in various high-tech industries owing to their excellent impact resistance. This paper presents an explicit finite element (FE) simulation to investigate the dynamic damage behavior of carbon fiber-reinforced aluminum laminates (CRALLs) under combined explosion and fragment loading. Johnson-Cook model is utilized to capture the damage response of aluminum material; 3D Hashin failure criteria are applied to predict the damage evolution of fiber composite material considering the high strain rate effect; cohesive elements are incorporated to simulate the inter-laminar delamination phenomena. The effectiveness of the proposed numerical model is verified through a comparison with available experimental data in ballistic impact conditions. In addition, a thorough analysis of the dynamic behavior and damage mechanism of FMLs is conducted, and the impact performance is extensively discussed in terms of the influences of explosion distance and explosion mass. Three-dimensional angle-interlock woven composites (3DAWCs) are usually employed as exposed components in aerospace and other high-tech areas due to their superior impact resistance. In this work, the experimental characterization and numerical modeling are combined together to study the ballistic performance and damage behavior of 3DAWCs under high velocity impact (HVI). The initial-residual velocity relation is examined by ballistic impact test and the penetration process is recorded by high-speed camera. A nonlinear finite element (FE) model based on a multi-scale modeling framework is established to simulate the ballistic impact response and damage behavior of 3DAWCs. The proposed FE model is verified by comparing the predicted initial-residual velocity curve and penetration propagation with the experimental data. Parameter analysis is conducted to address the influences of projectile diameter and impact angle on the impact performance of 3DAWCs and the corresponding damage mechanisms are revealed in detail.
