The main goal of this study was to investigate the effect of tow tension and related internal micro-structure on the damage behavior of 3D orthogonal woven composites under tensile loading. For representing the internal micro-structure of the composite with respect to varying tow cross-section and the unregulated undulated path which are introduced by Z-binder tension, a dynamical method at filament level which simulates an interlacing process was used to obtain the fabric architecture. Then, an element recognition algorithm was proposed to convert a representative unit cell of 3D woven fabric architectures into a finite element model with 8-node solid elements consisting of four kinds of sets in terms of warp, weft, Z-binder tows and resin matrix. In addition, filament trajectory was also extracted from fabric architecture to serve as a local material orientation. Comparative simulations under tensile loading were conducted on the FEA models generated by this work and texgen software, respectively. An experiment was also carried out to verify the simulation results. The stress–strain curve in the proposed model was found to be closer to the experiment data. The results show that the tensile modulus and strength reduce due to the diverged warp tow path which is induced by the interaction between the tows during the weaving process. Moreover, the irregularity and compressed weft tow cross-sections nearby the intercross point are more likely to generate the transverse damage which would result in the non-linear tensile behavior of the composite material. Composite tubes have an asymmetry deformation and loading distribution under transverse bending. This work investigated the effect of the stacking sequence on the critical damage to a hybrid tube with 45° and 60° braided layers. In-situ infrared thermal imaging was adopted to observe the initiation and development of internal damage. As the outermost reinforcing material in the stacking structure, the 60° braided layer with high contact strength inhibited damage to the contact area at the top and improved the bending strength of the specimen at the initial stage of loading. As the inner reinforcing material in the stacking structure, the 45° braided layer with high bending toughness maintained the high stability of the load-carrying capacity during bending and restrained the tensile failure at the bottom of the tube. However, the interlaminar interface of braided layers with different braiding angles reduced the interlaminar fracture toughness. The interlaminar delamination failure developed rapidly as the bending at the bottom of the tube increased. Braided composite laminates allow a reinforcement architecture design method of varying ply-to-ply braided structure instead of rotating fiber orientation in traditional unidirectional laminates. The stacking sequence sensitivities of braided laminates subjected to low-velocity impact were experimentally studied. Uniform ([±45° 6 ]) and non-uniform ([±30° 2 /±45° 2 /±60° 2 ]) architectures were designed to evaluate the effect of braided structure on impact performance. In addition, non-uniform laminate was impacted on both sides to identify the role of impact side on the failure mode. Quasi-static indentation was conducted to understand the damage initiation and propagation of braided laminates. The experimental results show that braided ply with high crimp level in impact side induced the main cracks along the load-carrying yarn, causing that the laminate failed in a kink-band dominated mode. For braided ply with low crimp level, a micro-buckling damage was found in the impact side, leading to the delamination dominated failure mode. It was also found that uniform braided laminate presents inferior impact resistance with respect to lower peak load and more concentrated damage because the kink-band can propagate into the specimen along braiding yarn easily. The aim of this study is to characterize and assess the effect of fabric structure on the damage resistance subjected to low velocity impact. Composite panels reinforced by layered unidirectional (LU), layered woven (LW) and 3D orthogonal woven (OW) fabric were prepared respectively and the impact tests were carried out on a low-velocity testbench. Finite element models at yarn-level were established to numerically investigate the material deformation and failure mechanism. The impact tests showed that the OW composite possessed better impact resistance with respect to impact-induced deformation and inelastic energy absorption. The roles of the z-binder have also been identified through comparison of impacted morphology and numerical results. The z-binder serves as cracking trigger due to the weak debonding with resin pocket around it and its zig-zag configuration impedes the growth of delamination by damage deflection. Therefore, the discontinuous resin damage in 3D composite allows the enhancement of impact resistance instead of delamination failure in the 2D panel. In addition, the in-plane interlacement of woven fabric causes that primary yarn breaks in the high stress region and forms a circle damage area, whereas the penetrating cracking along the fiber orientation of superficial layer is induced in the unidirectional composite. • Experimental study of the repeated low-velocity impacts of various fiber structures. • 3D woven composites mainly dissipate impact energy through fiber breakage. • 3D orthogonal woven composites mainly show vertical crack paths. • The durability of 3D woven composites under high-energy impact is improved. • The structural integrity of the 3D orthogonal woven composites is high. This paper presents an experimental investigation into the response of carbon fiber reinforced composites with various fiber architectures to repeated low-velocity impacts. Mechanical response diagrams, including repetition numbers and damage morphologies of the composite samples, are provided. Varied energy levels (20 J, 35 J, 50 J) and impact numbers (up to 30th) are considered to induce perforated damage in the composite samples. It is found that the mechanical responses of the composite samples under repeated impact events exhibit distinct characteristics in terms of impact threshold and stiffness degradation. The 2D unidirectional (2DUD) laminated composite sample exhibits a high impact threshold during impact events but stiffness rapidly decays after an initial substantial decline. The 2D plain woven (2DPW) laminated composite sample accumulates impact damage at both high and low levels, resulting in a gradual stiffness decrease during impact events. In addition, the 3D orthogonal woven (3DOW) composite sample demonstrates a higher impact threshold with its stiffness gradually decreasing under high-level impacts. In contrast, both 2DUD and 2DPW composite samples exhibit extensive plastic deformation of the resin matrix with minimal fiber fracture, enabling efficient dissipation of impact energy. Conversely, the 3DOW composite sample primarily dissipates impact energy through fiber fracture. Additionally, it is noteworthy that while both 2DUD and 2DPW composites demonstrate enhanced robustness against repeated impacts at low-energy levels, a significant improvement in durability is observed specifically for the 3DOW composite under high-energy level impacts.
