Abstract

The determination of the mass of galaxy clusters from observations is subject to systematic uncertainties. Beyond the errors due to instrumental and observational systematic effects, in this work we investigate the bias introduced by modelling assumptions. In particular, we consider the reconstruction of the mass of galaxy clusters from convergence maps employing spherical mass density models. We made use of THE THREE HUNDRED simulations, selecting clusters in the same redshift and mass range as the NIKA2 Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Large Programme sample: 3 ≤ M500/1014 M⊙ ≤ 10 and 0.5 ≤ z ≤ 0.9. We studied different modelling and intrinsic uncertainties that should be accounted for when using the single cluster mass estimates for scaling relations. We confirm that the orientation of clusters and the radial ranges considered for the fit have an important impact on the mass bias. The effect of the projection adds uncertainties to the order of 10–16% to the mass estimates. We also find that the scatter from cluster to cluster in the mass bias when using spherical mass models is less than 9% of the true mass of the clusters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Astronomy and Astrophysics 453 (2006) 761-768; International audience; The analysis of the time ordered data of Dark Matter experiments is becoming more and more challenging with the increase of sensitivity in the ongoing and forthcoming projects. Combined with the well-known level of background events, this leads to a rather high level of pile-up in the data. Ionization, scintillation as well as bolometric signals present common features in their acquisition timeline: low frequency baselines, random gaussian noise, parasitic noise and signal characterized by well-defined peaks. In particular, in the case of long-lasting signals such as bolometric ones, the pile-up of events may lead to an inaccurate reconstruction of the physical signal (misidentification as well as fake events). We present a general method to detect and extract signals in noisy data with a high pile-up rate and qe show that events from few keV to hundreds of keV can be reconstructed in time ordered data presenting a high pile-up rate. This method is based on an iterative detection and fitting procedure combined with prior wavelet-based denoising of the data and baseline subtraction. We have tested this method on simulated data of the MACHe3 prototype experiment and shown that the iterative fitting procedure allows us to recover the lowest energy events, of the order of a few keV, in the presence of background signals from a few to hundreds of keV. Finally we applied this method to the recent MACHe3 data to successfully measure the spectrum of conversion electrons from Co57 source and also the spectrum of the background cosmic muons.

Abstract

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a large acceptance (0.65 sr m(2)) detector designed to operate in the International Space Station (ISS) for three years. The purposes of the experiment are to search for cosmic antimatter and dark matter and to study the composition and energy spectrum of the primary cosmic rays. A "scated-down" version has been flown on the Space Shuttle Discovery for 10 days in June 1998. The complete AMS is programmed for installation on the ISS in October 2003 for an operational period of 3 yr. Abstract

A substantial body of astrophysical evidence supports the existence of non-baryonic dark matter in the Universe. One of the leading dark matter candidates is the neutralino predicted by the supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. Different detectors have been designed for the detection, either indirect or direct, of the neutralino. Related to indirect detection, the present work has been performed in the context of the AMS experiment. A precursor version of the spectrometer was flown on the space shuttle Discovery in June 1998. The detector included an Aerogel Threshold Cherenkov (ATC) counter to identify antiprotons, whose spectrum may be used to infer a neutralino signal. The analysis of the ATC data is presented including an evaluation of the flight performance and a description of the optimization of the antiproton selection. An antiproton analysis is also reported. A phenomenological study allows to investigate the discovery potential of this indirect method. This thesis also includes the development of a new detector (MACHe3) designed for direct neutralino search using a superfluid He3 bolometer operated at ultra low temperatures. The data analysis of the prototype cell is presented. A Monte Carlo simulation has been developed, in order to optimize the detector design for direct neutralino search. These results are compared with theoretical predictions of supersymmetric models, thus highlighting the discovery potential of this detector and its complementarity with existing devices.; De nombreux arguments astrophysiques sont en faveur de l'existence de matière sombre non-baryonique dans l'Univers. Le neutralino, postulé par les extensions supersymétriques du modèle standard de la physique des particules, constitue l'un des candidats privilégiés à cette masse manquante. La détection de neutralinos peut être directe, par interaction dans le détecteur, ou indirecte, via la recherche des produits d'annihilation. Dans le cadre de la détection indirecte, le travail a été effectué au sein de la collaboration AMS dont la première phase a eu lieu en juin 1998 à bord de la navette Discovery. Le spectromètre AMS est équipé d'un détecteur Cherenkov à seuil (ATC) dont les performances ont été étudiées dans le but d'optimiser la sélection d'antiprotons. Le spectre de ces derniers peut en effet signer la présence de neutralinos. Une analyse des données antiprotons d'AMS est également présentée. Finalement, une étude phénoménologique permet d'évaluer le potentiel de découverte par cette méthode. D'autre part, cette thèse porte sur le développement d'un projet de nouveau détecteur (MACHe3) pour la détection directe de neutralinos. Il s'agit d'un bolomètre à He3 superfluide, fonctionnant à ultra-basses températures. L'analyse des données expérimentales de la cellule prototype est présentée. Afin d'optimiser la configuration du détecteur pour la détection directe, une simulation Monte Carlo a été développée, permettant d'évaluer ses performances futures. La confrontation de la simulation et des prédictions des modèles supersymétriques démontre le potentiel de découverte de MACHe3 et souligne sa complémentarité avec les détecteurs existants.

Abstract

Cosmological observations indicate that most of the matter in the Universe is Dark Matter. Dark Matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) can be detected directly, via its elastic scattering off target nuclei. Most current direct detection experiments only measure the energy of the recoiling nuclei. However, directional detection experiments are sensitive to the direction of the nuclear recoil as well. Due to the Sun’s motion with respect to the Galactic rest frame, the directional recoil rate has a dipole feature, peaking around the direction of the Solar motion. This provides a powerful tool for demonstrating the Galactic origin of nuclear recoils and hence unambiguously detecting Dark Matter. Furthermore, the directional recoil distribution depends on the WIMP mass, scattering cross section and local velocity distribution. Therefore, with a large number of recoil events it will be possible to study the physics of Dark Matter in terms of particle and astrophysical properties. 11. TRACK RECONSTRUCTION WITH MIMAC.

Abstract

Directional detection of Dark Matter is a promising search strategy. However, to perform such kind of detection, the recoiling tracks have to be accurately reconstructed: direction, sense and position in the detector volume. In order to optimize the track reconstruction and to fully exploit the data from the MIMAC detector, we developed a likelihood method dedicated to the track reconstruction. This likelihood approach requires a full simulation of track measurements with MIMAC in order to compare real tracks to simulated ones. Finally, we found that the MIMAC detector should have the required performance to perform a competitive directional detection of Dark Matter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Directional detection is a promising Dark Matter search strategy. Taking advantage on the rotation of the Solar system around the galactic center through the Dark Matter halo, it allows to show a direction dependence of WIMP events. It requires the simultaneous measurement of the energy and the 3D track of low energy recoils, which is a common challenge for all current projects of directional detectors. The third CYGNUS workshop on directional dark matter detection has brought together the scientific community working on both theoretical and experimental aspects of the subject. Abstract

The AMANDE facility produces mono-energetic neutron fields from 2 keV to 20 MeV with a metrological quality (Gressier et al. 2004). To be considered as a standard facility, fluence and energy distributions of neutron fields have to be mastered, i.e. measured by primary detector standards. For this purpose, a new gaseous Time Projection Chamber (μTPC) is being developed within the MIMAC project devoted to directional Dark Matter search (Billard et al. 2010). The μTPC is dedicated to measure neutron fields from 2 keV up to 1 MeV. The measurement strategy requires track reconstruction of recoiling nuclei down to a few keV, which can be achieved with low pressure gaseous detectors. Hence the energy must be measured precisely and the track of the recoiling nucleus must be 3D reconstructed. This is achieved with a low pressure micropattern gaseous detector (a pixelized bulk micromegas) equipped with a self triggered electronics able to perform the anode sampling at a 50 MHz frequency. Abstract

There is considerable experimental effort dedicated to the directional detection of particle dark matter. Gaseous pTPC detectors present the privileged features of being able to reconstruct the track and the energy of the recoil nucleus following the interaction. A precise measurement of the recoil energy is a key point for the directional search strategy. Quenching has to be taken into account, i.e. only a certain fraction of the recoil energy is deposited in the ionization channel. Measurements of the ionization quenching factor for different gas mixture at room temperature have been made with a dedicated ion beam facility at the LPSC of Grenoble. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Directional detection of non-baryonic Dark Matter is a promising search strategy for discriminating WIMP events from background ones. This strategy requires both a measurement of the recoil energy down to a few keV and 3D reconstruction of tracks down to a few ram. The MIMAC project, based on a micro-TPC matrix, filled with CF4 and CHF3 is being developed. The first results of a chamber prototype of this matrix, on low energy nuclear recoils (¹H and 19F) obtained with mono-energetic neutron fields are presented. Abstract: Directional detection of Galactic Dark Matter is a promising search strategy for discriminating WIMP events from background. Technical progress on gaseous detectors and read-outs has permitted the design and construction of competitive experiments. However, to take full advantage of this powerful detection method, one need to be able to extract information from an observed recoil map to identify a WIMP signal. We present a comprehensive formalism, using a map-based likelihood method allowing to recover the main incoming direction of the signal and its significance, thus proving its Galactic origin. This is a blind analysis intended to be used on any directional data. Constraints are deduced in the () plane and systematic studies are presented in order to show that, using this analysis tool, unambiguous Dark Matter detection can be achieved on a large range of exposures and background levels. Abstract

There is a worldwide effort toward the development of a large time projection chamber devoted to directional dark matter detection. All current projects are being designed to fulfill a unique goal: identifying weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) as such by taking advantage of the expected direction dependence of WIMP-induced events toward the constellation Cygnus. However, such proof of discovery requires a careful statistical data treatment. In this paper, the discovery potential of forthcoming directional detectors is addressed by using a frequentist approach based on the profile likelihood ratio test statistic. This allows us to estimate the expected significance of a dark matter detection taking into account astrophysical and experimental uncertainties. We show that the energy threshold and the background contamination are key experimental issues for directional detection, while angular resolution and sense recognition efficiency only mildly affect the sensitivity and the energy resolution is unimportant. This way, we found that a 30 kg.year CF4 directional experiment could reach a 3cr sensitivity at 90% C.L. down to 10-5 pb and 3.10-4 pb for the WIMP-proton axial cross section in the most optimistic and pessimistic detector performance case, respectively. Abstract

Directional detection is a promising dark matter search strategy. Indeed, weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-induced recoils would present a direction dependence toward the Cygnus constellation, while background-induced recoils exhibit an isotropic distribution in the Galactic rest frame. Taking advantage of these characteristic features, and even in the presence of a sizeable background, it has recently been shown that data from forthcoming directional detectors could lead either to a competitive exclusion or to a conclusive discovery, depending on the value of the WIMP-nucleon cross section. However, it is possible to further exploit these upcoming data by using the strong dependence of the WIMP signal with: the WIMP mass and the local WIMP velocity distribution. Using a Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis of recoil events, we show for the first time the possibility to constrain the unknown WIMP parameters, both from particle physics (mass and cross section) and Galactic halo (velocity dispersion along the three axis), leading to an identification of non-baryonic dark matter. Abstract

The Cluster HEritage project with XMM-Newton - Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation (CHEX-MATE) is a three mega-second Multi-Year Heritage Programme to obtain X-ray observations of a minimally-biased, signal-to-noise limited sample of 118 galaxy clusters detected by Planck through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The programme, described in detail in this paper, aims to study the ultimate products of structure formation in time and mass. It is composed of a census of the most recent objects to have formed (Tier-1: 0.05 < z < 0.2; 2 x 10e14 M_sun < M_500 < 9 x 10e14 M_sun), together with a sample of the highest-mass objects in the Universe (Tier-2: z < 0.6; M_500 > 7.25 x 10e14 M_sun). The programme will yield an accurate vision of the statistical properties of the underlying population, measure how the gas properties are shaped by collapse into the dark matter halo, uncover the provenance of non-gravitational heating, and resolve the major uncertainties in mass determination that limit the use of clusters for cosmological parameter estimation. We will acquire X-ray exposures of uniform depth, designed to obtain individual mass measurements accurate to 15-20% under the hydrostatic assumption. Abstract: Recent N-body simulations are in favor of the presence of a co-rotating Dark Disk that might contribute significantly (10%–50%) to the local Dark Matter density. Such substructure could have dramatic effect on directional detection. Indeed, in the case of a null lag velocity, one expects an isotropic WIMP velocity distribution arising from the Dark Disk contribution, which might weaken the strong angular signature expected in directional detection. For a wide range of Dark Disk parameters, we evaluate in this Letter the effect of such dark component on the discovery potential of upcoming directional detectors. As a conclusion of our study, using only the angular distribution of nuclear recoils, we show that Dark Disk models as suggested by recent N-body simulations will not affect significantly the Dark Matter reach of directional detection, even in extreme configurations. Abstract: A front end ASIC (BiCMOS-SiGe ) has been developed within the framework of the MIMAC detector project, which aims at directional detection of non-baryonic Dark Matter. This search strategy requires 3D reconstruction of low energy (a few keV) tracks with a gaseous . The development of this front end ASIC is a key point of the project, allowing the 3D track reconstruction. Each ASIC monitors 16 strips of pixels with charge preamplifiers and their time over threshold is provided in real time by current discriminators via two serializing LVDS links working at 320MHz. The charge is summed over the 16 strips and provided via a shaper. These specifications have been chosen in order to build an auto triggered electronics. An acquisition board and the related software were developed in order to validate this methodology on a prototype chamber. Abstract

We investigate the capability of directional detectors to probe neutralino dark matter in the minimal supersymmetric standard model and the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model with parameters defined at the weak scale. We show that directional detectors such as the future MIMAC detector will probe spin-dependent dark matter scattering on nucléons that are beyond the reach of current spin-independent detectors. The complementarity between indirect searches, in particular, using gamma rays from dwarf spheroidal galaxies, spin-dependent and spin-independent direct search techniques is emphasized. We comment on the impact of the negative results on squark searches at the LHC. Finally, we investigate how the fundamental parameters of the models can be constrained in the event of a dark matter signal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The measurement of the direction of WIMP-induced nuclear recoils is a compelling but technologically challenging strategy to provide an unambiguous signature of the detection of Galactic dark matter. Most directional detectors aim to reconstruct the dark-matter-induced nuclear recoil tracks, either in gas or solid targets. The main challenge with directional detection is the need for high spatial resolution over large volumes, which puts strong requirements on the readout technologies. In this paper we review the various detector readout technologies used by directional detectors.
