Social resilience and trust are two major components of the mitigation of the spread of contagious diseases. Although measures such as the imposition of national lockdowns and self-quarantines have been proven to be effective in reducing morbidity, their efficacy is dependent on public trust and compliance. The purpose of this study was to assess public attitudes toward the COVID-19 outbreak over the course of a year. A cohort study of the adult population in Israel was conducted during three waves of COVID-19 morbidity in that country, with February 2020 as the baseline, March 2020 for the first wave, August 2020 for the second, and January 2021 for the third. The results suggest that there is a relationship between risk perception and compliance with health regulations. Moreover, trust is a major component in public compliance. Fluctuations in risk perception and trust were found to affect compliance with regulations. The failure of decision makers to appropriately address the economic constraints imposed on the public during prolonged disasters, such as the COVID-19 outbreak, is likely to lead to a reduction in public trust in the government and to a decrease in societal resilience. To contain the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, health and government authorities have imposed sweeping self-quarantine orders for communities worldwide. Health officials assume that the public will have high rates of compliance. However, studies suggest that a major obstacle to compliance for household quarantine is concern about loss of income. A cross-sectional study of the adult population of Israel was conducted in the last week of February 2020 to assess public attitudes toward the COVID-19 outbreak. In particular, public compliance rates with self-quarantine were assessed, depending on whether lost wages would be compensated for. When compensation was assumed, the compliance rate was 94 percent. When compensation was removed, the compliance rate dropped to less than 57 percent. This study demonstrated that providing people with assurances about their livelihoods during self-quarantine is an important component of compliance with public health regulations. Objective: The effects of televised trauma on the emotional well-being of television viewers has received some scientific attention in recent years, suggesting that the general public is placed at risk of developing distress and possibly posttraumatic psychopathology as a result of secondary exposure via mass media. At the break of a recent war in Gaza, we assessed the psychological effects of the extensive news broadcasting. Method: An omnibus survey was performed two weeks into Operation Protective Edge with a sample of 500 participants representing the adult (> 18) Jewish population of Israel. Results: The results suggest that a vast majority (87.2%) of the population tuned in to the newscasts and the majority (76.7%) of viewers increased their news consumption compared to normal. Increased frequency of viewing newscasts was associated with reported anxiety reflected in uncontrolled fear, physiological hyperarousal, sleeping difficulties, and fearful thoughts. A regression model revealed that viewers watching the constant newscasts more than usual are 1.6 times more likely to report at least one anxiety symptom compared to those watching at the same frequency or less, standardized to gender and age. Conclusions: Increased viewing patterns of televised traumatic content, as well as negative perception of such broadcasts, are associated with the report of anxiety symptoms or psychopathology. In recent years Israel has become a destination for many migrants from Africa that illegally cross the Egyptian-Israeli border. The objective of this paper is to describe the epidemiological characteristics of injuries among illegal migrants in Israel. The study was carried out retrospectively using data from 19 trauma centers that participated in the Israel National Trauma Registry between 1 January 2006 and 31 December 2011. Illegal migrants from Africa were compared to the local population. Migrants were injured more often than the local population from intentional injuries (57.11 %). Migrants were also less likely than the local population (58.38 %) to sustain a minor injury (i.e., injury severity ≤8). The study also shows the hospitalization cost as a result of injuries among migrants from Africa. Preventive measures among illegal migrants from Africa should prioritize intentional injuries and industrial site injuries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes the characteristics of injuries of illegal immigrants admitted to a Level I trauma center after being shot at the southern border of Israel. This is a retrospective descriptive study. Some of the variables were compared to a group of soldiers who sustained penetrating injury at the same region where the illegal migrant were injured. The study includes 162 patients. The lower body absorbed a higher percentage of the injuries (61 %). The hospitalization time is longer for the migrant patients compared to the soldiers (13 ± 2 vs. 3 ± 0.3 days p = 0.0001). This study on wounded immigrants shows that a conjoint military and civilian system can result in favourable outcomes. The manuscript is an attempt to bring this unique situation, its type of injuries, and the difficulties of the health system in coping with it, to the notice of all authorities that may address a similar challenge. Objective.To examine whether characteristics and circumstances of injuries are related to ethnicity. Design.The study was based on the Israeli National Trauma Registry data for patients hospitalized between 2008 and 2011. Data included demographics, injury, hospital resource utilization characteristics and outcome at discharge. Univariate analysis followed by logistic regression models were undertaken to examine the relationship between injury and ethnicity. Results.The study included 116,946 subjects; 1% were Ethiopian Born Israelis (EBI), 11% Israelis born in the Former Soviet Union (FSUBI) and 88% the remaining Israelis (RI). EBI were injured more on street or at work place and had higher rates of penetrating and severe injuries. However, FSUBI were mostly injured at home, and had higher rates of fall injuries and hip fracture. Adjusted analysis showed that EBI and FSUBI were more likely to be hospitalized because of violence-related injuries compared with RI but less likely because of road traffic injuries. Undergoing surgery and referral for rehabilitation were greater among FSUBI, while admission to intensive care unit was greater among EBI. Conclusion.Targeted intervention programmes need to be developed for immigrants of different countries of origin in accordance with the identified characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Aim: To assess the incidence and injury characteristics of hospitalized trauma patients diagnosed with TBI. Methods: A retrospective study of all injured hospitalized patients recorded in the National Trauma Registry at 19 trauma centres in Israel between 2002–2011. Incidence and injury characteristics were examined among children, adults and seniors. Results: The annual incidence rate of hospitalized TBI for the Israeli population in 2011 was 31.8/100 000. Age-specific incidence was highest among seniors with a dramatic decrease in TBI-related mortality rate among them. Adults, in comparison to children and seniors, had higher rates of severe TBI, severe and critical injuries, more admission to the intensive care unit, underwent surgery, were hospitalization for more than 2 weeks and were discharged to rehabilitation. After adjusting for age, gender, ethnicity, mechanism of injury and injury severity score, TBI-related in-hospital mortality was higher among seniors and adults compared to children. Conclusion: Seniors are at high risk for TBI-related in-hospital mortality, although adults had more severe and critical injuries and utilized more hospital resources. However, seniors showed the most significant reduction in mortality rate during the study period. Background: Despite ISS being a widely accepted tool for measuring injury severity, many researchers and practitioners use different partition of ISS into severity groups. The lack of uniformity in ISS use inhibits proper comparisons between different studies. Creation of ISS group boundaries based on single AIS value squares and their sums was proposed in 1988 during Major Trauma Study (MTOS) in the USA, but was not validated by analysis of large databases. Methods: A validation study analysing 316 944 patients in the Israeli National Trauma registry (INTR) and 249 150 patients in the American National Trauma Data Bases (NTDB). A binary algorithm (Classification and Regression Trees (CART)) was used to detect the most significantly different ISS groups and was also applied to original MTOS data. Results: The division of ISS into groups by the CART algorithm was identical in both Trauma Registries and very similar to original division in the MTOS. For most samples, the recommended groups are 1–8, 9–14, 16–24 and 25–75, while in very large samples or in studies specifically targeting critical patients there is a possibility to divide the last group into 25–48 and 50–75 groups, with an option for further division into 50–66 and 75 groups. Conclusions: Using a statistical analysis of two very large databases of trauma patients, we have found that partitioning of ISS into groups based on their association with patient mortality enables us to establish clear cutoff points for these groups. We propose that the suggested partition of ISS into severity groups would be adopted as a standard in order to have a common language when discussing injury severity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective.To examine the differences and characteristics of road traffic injuries (RTIs) among Jewish and Arab children, ages 0–17 years, in Israel. Design.A retrospective study based on data from the Israeli National Trauma Registry between 2001 and 2010. This study relates specifically to traffic-related hospitalizations among children ages 0–17 years. Data include demographic, injury, and hospitalization characteristics. Descriptive statistics and adjusted logistic regression were used to examine the differences of RTIs between the two ethnic groups. Results.A total of 18,884 children were included, of which Arab children comprised 38.2% of the total and 44.1% of the severely injured. Among Arab children 41.8% were pedestrians compared to 33.4% among Jewish children (p<0.0001). Arab children were younger, had more severe injuries and more traumatic brain injury (TBI) compared to Jewish children. Adjusted logistic regression analysis shows that the probability of an Arab child, relative to a Jewish child, to undergo surgical procedures was 1.2 (p<0.0001), to be hospitalized in intensive care units (ICUs) was 0.8 (p=0.003), and to be transferred to rehabilitation was 0.5 (p<0.0001). There was no significant difference in inpatient mortality between the two ethnic groups. Conclusions.Arab children in Israel are more likely to be hospitalized due to road accidents in comparison to Jewish children.
